The effects of climate change are evident each, from floods in Asia to heat waves in Europe to a stronger hurricanes in United States. This is the last of my 401K posts. Up to now I’ve described in general the benefits of a 401K, why you should sign up for your employer’s 401K plan and what to do if you have a 401K from a former employer. To put my money where my mouth is, here is what I did with mine.
I signed up for the BN 401K plan sometime in 2015. I was originally a seasonal BN employee in 2014 and slowly went to part time to full time café lead by December of 2016. I really don’t remember at what percentage I signed up my 401K with but I definitely know that I did at least 4% to get the 4% match. By the time I was promoted to Café Manager at the White Plains BN store I continued to increase the amount I was putting in from my salary pre-tax. By the time I left the company in December of 2018, I was putting in 10% with the 4% match. On January 1, 2019, I had roughly $14,800 in the 401K. Not to shabby. Here came my dilemma.
In going back to the bar biz, there was no 401K in place to roll my old one into. So I left it where it was. The only additions to it was in the form of earned dividends that were reinvested. The 401K was at the mercy of the market. Then came COVID-19.
The 401K was taking a pounding. I decided it was time to roll it into a private 401K through Fidelity. I cashed out at $16K and a week later it hit a low of $13K after opening the new 401K. But this is a marathon not a sprint. Being able to put in $100 a month and reinvesting earned dividends, my 401K sits at a little over $25K with an almost 8.5% rate of return a year later. Its a nice foundation to build upon. I’m now looking into other funds and stocks to diversify my investments. There you go. To quote good old Forrest Gump: That’s all I have to say about that. Hit me up if you have any questions. ✌🏾
