Okay I sat on it for a few days but something is still bothering me about Ep3 of Rings of Power. If you don't want spoilers, scroll by now.

It's the Orc family. The orc family is bothering me. Was I curious how Orcs procreate? Yeah, mainly because I know they're twisted from elves. Were they immortal like the elves or did they die? They obviously didn't have finite numbers so how did they replenish them? Were they like the Uruk-hai and born out of the ground?

Well I got my answer, and that's not the part that bothers me. What bothers me is that they tried to humanized the orcs. They depicted mommy, daddy and baby, a nice little family unit. And yeah, Tolkien humanized his orcs a bit too, but they are a corrupted form of elves. To me that means the forms of love should be corrupted too, the interpersonal relationships, the societal structure. I've always pictured orcs and elves as foils to each other.

IDK man, not everything needs humanization? Sometimes shit can just be hella evil ya know?

The second season is good so far, better than season 1 imho but I don't think I'm gonna get over that orc family.

Adar:

Hi, I have all the feelings about Adar. It's bingo several ways but actually not quite blackout. I don't think Adar has parents (first generation from Cuiviénen) and he would not consider Morgoth/Sauron in anyway parental so that rules out either Daddy or Mommy issues. I HOPE I'm not like Adar?! And I'm not adopting him.

The "I hate you" is for this one dreadful scene (sunburning an uruk) that I think is terribly out of character for him. If I could cut one thing from Rings of Power, that would be it. The longer I stew on it, the more angry I get, tbh. I think it's only there to make him a better "Sauron candidate" and that whole "who is Sauron?" thing in the first season is terminally dull imo. I have considered an in-depth "rewrite" of those scenes that were only there in service of that mystery box as a long form tumblr post before. But I am over-committed as it is.

Feanor:

Feanor is almost the opposite of how I feel about Adar. All of the Mommy and Daddy issues, and the "I hate you" is completely earned. If I met Feanor in real life, I would slap him. And I don't have that impulse toward many people. His hubris is COLLOSSAL and he deserves the Greek tragedy ending he gets for it.

Maeglin:

Maeglin gets so much unnecessary hate in the fandom and it's kind of made me disengage with people talking about him. I think it's because a lot of people can relate to Idris on the "unwanted attention" front, but not as many can relate to Maeglin on the "seizing upon the first nice person you meet after a very troubled childhood" (which - I'm glad that the second seems to be less common, but I think people are WAY too quick to dismiss what growing up in the situation he was in would do to a person).

I relate to Maeglin a lot and I just genuinely feel bad for him. He is so young when he dies. I actually can't think of an elf we know of who is younger. And I think he wasn't really given the chance to grow and change. Also, bingo.

should've known better than to adarpost on the adar-themed blog and expect any other outcome, lol, but more of you should consider getting into orm marius. and i mean that in a sexual way. haha what? anyway, i guess i'm just a little defensive of the underdogs!! sue me!! orm marius is SO wet (he lives underwater) and pathetic (mommy issues to the extreme, daddy issues possibly even more so?) and when aquaman 2 drops and he gets a sexy redemption arc/creepy yet hot possession scene/sacrificial death i'm gonna be I TOLD YOU SO into the next millennium.

orm was never going to beat adar in this poll given the demographics of my followers but in a way they're very similar, kings of their own worlds getting their asses beat by people with less legitimate claim to rule than them. so much trauma borne from their origin stories in pain and grief. they think they're holding the line against true darkness but they're actually contributing to evil in the world.

............i guess what i'm saying is, they're really quite similar which really demands the question of when i'm going to write the adar/orm fic i really want? fuck. jesus. christ. god fucking damn. i'm going to write an adar/orm fic now aren't i. no because picture this: aquaman AU where the trench are a stand-in for the uruk and so adar is the leader of the trench which are dark-magic mutations of atlanteans, but adar's adamant that they're not monsters, they have just as much right to live as the atlanteans under the rule of king orm. then they fuck. thanks for coming to my ted talk, i'll see myself out now :))))
