63 Years of Bhai-Bhai (20/04/1956)
Bhai-Bhai is a 1956 social family drama directed by M. V. Raman for A. V. M. Productions. It had the screenplay by Jawar N. Sitaraman, with Hindi screen adaptation of the Tamil film Ratha Paasam directed by C.V. Sridhar. The music director was Madan Mohan, with dialogues and lyrics written by Rajendra Krishan. One of the popular songs from the film was "Ae Dil Mujhe Bata De", sung by Geeta Dutt, "in an unabrasive fast tempo". The song became one of Madan Mohan's earliest hits, and the music of the film in journalist-author Bharatan's words went on to "conquer the box office".
The film starred Ashok Kumar, who played the lead role, and Kishore Kumar (real-life brothers) as the two brothers, with the film being referred to as one of Kishore Kumar's prominent films. The cast included Nirupa Roy, who played the role of Ashok Kumar's "homely" wife, while Shyama played the "seductress". The film co-starred Nimmi, Om Prakash, David, Daisy Irani, and Shivraj.
The story is of two brothers, with the younger brother running away from home at an early age. The older brother gets entangled with another woman, leaving his wife and child at home. This situation leads to the meeting of the brothers, with the older one mending his errant ways.

on a case by case basis
I'll go over the Malayalam case system for nouns today. Like other Dravidian languages, Malayalam has a lot of cases. I'll explain them here but I will draw out a table for them in another post. I'm a visual learner hence the blog, and I use lots of tables and diagrams, so expect lots of those. The rules stated here don't cover EVERY word, you know Malayalam loves irregularity, so you may come across certain words which break some rules stated here. Let's start with Nominative case (which is also a sort of default case). There's not much to say here; it's the case that subjects have. For example, രാമന് is a name (Raman) in nominative case. Accusative or objective case is used for direct objects (the person or thing receiving the action), but only if they're animate. In other words, accusative case can only be used on living things (including humans). It's formed by adding a suffix to the noun, specifically:
A. If noun ends with അ, ആ, എ, ഏ, ഇ, ഈ, ഒ, ഓ then remove the last vowel in the word and replace it with -യെ e.g. അമ്മ = അമ്മയെ
B. If noun ends with ഉ then remove it and replace it with -വിനെ e.g. പശു = പശുവിനെ
C. If the noun ends in അം then remove it and add -ത്തെ e.g. അദ്ദേഹം = അദ്ദേഹത്തെ
D. Now we start to get more complicated ൾ endings remove ൾ and add -ളെ if it's a pronoun such as അവൾ (she) becomes അവളെ. If the noun is not a pronoun then remove ൾ and add -ളിനെ. e.g. കാട്ടുബുള്ബുള് (black bulbul bird) = കാട്ടുബുള്ബുളിനെ
E. ർ endings remove ർ and add -രെ if it's a pronoun such as അവർ (they) becomes അവരെ. If the noun is not a pronoun then remove ർ and add -രിനെ. e.g. റെയിൻഡിയർ becomes റെയിൻഡിയരിനെ.
F. ൻ endings remove ൻ and add -നെ if it's a pronoun such as അവൻ (he) becomes അവനെ. If the noun is not a pronoun then remove ൻ and add -നിനെ. e.g. കുറുക്കൻ becomes കുറുക്കനിനെ.
G. ൽ endings remove ൽ and add -ലിനെ. e.g മുയൽ becomes മുയലിനെ
H. Any endings that don't fit those above e.g. ് take -ഇനെ therefore ഉറുമ്പ് becomes ഉറുമ്പിനെ.
So Raman in accusative case would be രാമനെ, Raghu in accusative case would be രഘുവിനെ. An inanimate (none living thing) noun, can't take the accusative case ending; if it's a direct object, it still has the nominative case form. For example, a book isn't a living thing, so the word for 'book' പുസ്തകം can't take the ending -ത്തെ.
This means if I wanted to say, "I saw Raman," I'd have to use the accusative case form to show that Raman is the direct object here - ഞാൻ രാമനെ കണ്ടു. (Same for "I saw Raghu" - ഞാൻ രഘുവിനെ കണ്ടു or "I saw a cat"- ഞാൻ പൂച്ചയെ കണ്ടു). However if I wanted to say, "I saw a book," I'd just use the nominative case form for the book so it would be ഞാൻ ഒരു പുസ്തകം കണ്ടു as a book is an inanimate object. Malayalam also has a locative case. The locative suffix means something like "in" or "at." The locative case suffix is -ഇൽ.
A. If noun ends with അ, ആ, എ, ഏ, ഇ, ഈ, ഒ, ഓ then keep the vowel and add -യിൽ e.g. വാരണാസി = വാരണാസിയിൽ - in Varanasi. I hope you’ve noticed accusative -യെ, locative -യിൽ, the യ് sound is used to join the noun to the case suffix, this pattern happens in most cases. B. If noun ends with ഉ then add -വിൽ e.g. ഉറുദു = ഉറുദുവിൽ - in Urdu
C. If the noun ends in അം then remove it and add -ത്തിൽ e.g. പുസ്തകം = പുസ്തകത്തിൽ -in the book. Notice how the you can use the locative case inanimate objects can be conjugated.
D. ൾ endings remove ൾ and add -ളിൽ e.g. ബൈബിൾ = ബൈബിളിൽ - in the Bible. ള and ൾ are pronounced from the same part of the mouth, hence the shift from a chillu ൾ to a consonant ള to allow for vowel sounds to join onto the word.
E. ർ endings remove ർ and add -റിൽ e.g. ഖത്തർ = ഖത്തറിൽ - in Qatar F. ൻ endings remove ൻ and add -നിൽ e.g. ഡർബൻ = ഡർബനിൽ - in Durban
G. ൽ endings remove ൽ and add -ലിൽ e.g. ബ്രസീൽ= ബ്രസീലിൽ - in Brazil
H. Any endings that don't fit those above e.g. ് take -ഇൽ e.g. ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് = ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ - in English
So തമിഴിൽ means "in Tamil," and പുസ്തകത്തിൽ means "in the book." മഴ means "rain," so മഴയിൽ means "in the rain." Finally, നടു means "middle," so നടുവിൽ means "in the middle." There's a very underused case known as instrumental case. The instrumental suffix means "because of." This suffix is -ആൽ (or -വാൽ/-യാൽ). So, for example, രാമനാൽ means "because of Raman." We will cover this interesting case when we start some more complex sentence structures - like saying ‘'because of being tired, I didn't exercise’ The other cases in Malayalam can be a bit more complex. Genitive or possessive case is used to mean "of" or like an English “’s” when saying “the cat’s whiskers”. Forming the genitive case form of a noun is a bit complicated:
A. If noun ends with അ, ആ, എ, ഏ, ഇ, ഈ, ഒ, ഓ keep the last vowel in the word and add -യുടെ e.g. താര = താരയുടെ - Tara’s
B. If noun ends with ഉ then keep it and add -വിന്റെ (ന്റെ is pronounced -nte not -nre as expected) e.g. കംഗാരു = കംഗാരുവിന്റെ - kangaroo’s
C. If the noun ends in അം then remove it and add -ത്തിന്റെ e.g. അദ്ദേഹം = അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ - his (polite/respectful version)
D. ൾ endings remove ൾ and add -ളുടെ if it's a pronoun such as അവൾ (she) becomes അവളുടെ - hers. If the noun is not a pronoun then remove ൾ and add -ളിന്റെ. e.g. കാട്ടുബുള്ബുള് (black bulbul bird) = കാട്ടുബുള്ബുളിന്റെ - black bulbul bird’s
E. ർ endings remove ർ and add -രുടെ if it's a pronoun such as അവർ (they) becomes അവരുടെ - their. If the noun is not a pronoun then remove ർ and add -രിന്റെ. e.g. റെയിൻഡിയർ = റെയിൻഡിയറിന്റെ - reindeer's
F. ൻ endings remove ൻ and add -ന്റെ if it's a pronoun such as അവൻ (he) becomes അവന്റെ - his. If the noun is not a pronoun then remove ൻ and add -നിന്റെ. e.g. മാൻ becomes മാനിന്റെ - deer’s 🦌.
G. ൽ endings remove ൽ, add -ലിന്റെ. e.g മുയൽ - മുയ���ിന്റെ - rabbit’s 🐇
H. Any endings that don't fit those above e.g. ് take -ഇന്റെ therefore ഉറുമ്പ് becomes ഉറുമ്പിന്റെ - ant’s 🐜
Vocative case is used to address somebody, e.g. if you wanted to say "o” as is often found in Sanskrit literature. For now, I'll just talk about how it can be used to call someone who's nearby. You use the nominative case form unless the name (or word) you're calling out ends in അൻ. With most names (and words), you change that അൻ to -ആ, e.g. രാമൻ = രാമാ "Raman!" BUT, there are some names that end in അൻ (like മോഹൻ) where you instead just ADD -ആ -aa to the end of the name: മോഹൻ = മോഹനാ means "Mohan!" (You wouldn't say മോഹാ!). There's also the sociative case that seems to be unique to Malayalam. In Malayalam, you use this case to indicate who said something to who. It often is associated with specific verbs like spoke, told, said, BUT NOT CALLED (this confused me in the beginning). The suffix for this case is conjugated as so:
A. If noun ends with അ, ആ, എ, ഏ, ഇ, ഈ, ഒ, ഓ keep the last vowel in the word and add -യോട് e.g. താര = ഞാൻ താരയോട് സംസാരിച്ചു- I spoke to Tara
B. If noun ends with ഉ then keep it and add -വിനോട് e.g. രഘു = അവർ രഘുവിനോട് പറഞ്ഞു - He told Raghu
C. If the noun ends in അം then remove it and add -ത്തിനോട് e.g. അദ്ദേഹം = അവൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനോട് സംസാരിച്ചു - She spoke to him
D. ൾ endings remove ൾ and add -ളോട് e.g. അവൾ = രാമന് അവളോട് സംസാരിക്കും - Raman will speak to her
E. ർ endings remove ർ and add -രോട് if it's a pronoun such as അവർ (they) becomes ഞാൻ അവരോട് പറഞ്ഞു - I told them. If the noun is not a pronoun then remove ർ and add -റിനോട്. e.g. റെയിൻഡിയർ = സാന്ത റെയിൻഡിയറിനോട് പറഞ്ഞു - Santa told the reindeer's.
F. ൻ endings remove ൻ and add -നോട് if it's a pronoun such as അവൻ (he) becomes അമ്മ അവനോട് സംസാരിക്കും - mother will speak to him. If the noun is not a pronoun then remove ൻ and add -നിനോട്. e.g. മാൻ becomes അവൾ ഒരു മാനിനോട് സംസാരിക്കും - she will speak to a deer.
G. ൽ endings remove ൽ, add -ലിനോട്. e.g മുയൽ = ഞാൻ മുയലിനോട് പറഞ്ഞു - I told the rabbit
H. Any endings that don't fit those above e.g. ് take -ഇനോട് therefore ഉറുമ്പ് becomes അവൻ ഉറുമ്പിനോട് സംസാരിച്ചു - he spoke to the ant
Don't focus on the whole talking to animals examples just take in the conjugations. Also the weirder the example the more likely you are to remember it.
Finally, Malayalam also has a dative case. The dative suffix means "to" or "for" and shouldn't be confused with the sociative case. The use of the dative case can be complex and I will cover it in a later blog. Forming the dative case is done like so:
A. If noun ends with അ, ആ, എ, ഏ, ഇ, ഈ, ഒ, ഓ keep the last vowel in the word and add -യ്ക്ക് e.g. താര = താരയ്ക്ക് - for Tara
B. If noun ends with ഉ then keep it and add -വിന് e.g. രഘു = രഘുവിന് - for Raghu
C. If the noun ends in അം then remove it and add -ത്തിന് e.g. അദ്ദേഹം = അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് - for him

F. ൻ endings keep ൻ and add -ന് if it's a pronoun such as അവൻ (he) becomes അവന് - for him. If the noun is not a pronoun then remove ൻ and add -നിന്. e.g. മാൻ = മാനിന് - for deer.
G. ൽ endings keep ൽ, add -ലിന്. e.g മുയൽ = മുയലിന് - for rabbit
H. Any endings that don't fit those above e.g. ് take -ഇന് therefore ഉറുമ്പ് = ഉറുമ്പിന് - for ant
Comitative Case is the concept of “with” or “along” as in there is someone/something, like a plus one. There are two ways to express this, one is using the suffix കൂടെ or using the actual verb/preposition for “with” ഒപ്പം (more accurately).
What is a bit tricky about this case is that, it is used along with genitive/possessive form of the pronoun or noun plus -കൂടെ
