My normal rat bedding was out of stock so I had to try something else and now my rats are sneezing like mad. ugggggh thats a whole bale of bedding I cant use then. turns out the bedding has fucking cedar in it thats not listed on the bag. I had to hunt down the safety data sheet >:( Kiln dried pine is fine, but kiln drying cedar does pretty much nothing to the phenol levels. Normally I use a kiln dried pine horse bedding. and it works fine. But thats not my fav bedding

My favorite (and my rats favorite) bedding is coco peat. How ever its more expensive and comes with one massive downside (that is also a plus side) The rats LOVE digging in it. Vigorously. So the downside is that they fling it EVERYWHERE. half the bedding ends up on the floor within hours no matter how I high I make the sides. If I could just find a way to keep it contained it would be by far the best bedding.

The rats love digging in it, its crazy absorbent, its smells nice and earthy, any soiled bedding becomes great compost. I used some of this "rat manure compost" in one container in my garden and the tomato plant in that container got HUGE I also feel like the increase in humidity from the slightly damp bedding is really good for their lungs
