The manga also has a chapter where Marina is shown to be in love and is writing a love note to Pearl (and draws Pearl like a Shoujo anime character). While I don't think the manga is considered "Canon", the splatoon dev team was involved with the creation of that chapter specifically.
Also I remember hearing that in japan, the names for the shifty stations during the final splatfest in 2 are different and implied Marina loves Pearl.
They also live together if that matters to anyone (though I personally think Pearl hasn't noticed yet in Splatoon 2 but hoping that changes in the 3 DLC).
I've taken the following translations from a Gamefaq's thread:
FunSizeFenia 3 years ago#20
While the western localization of the Splatfests have no harmonious theme and lack a focal genre with their novels delving into action, comedy, and even horror (with one being a name of a horror series, and another an author instead of a book), the original Japanese ones all center around the bishoujo-romance genre of mangas, and as I said, with most of them having a senpai-kouhai romance relationship.
Japanese mangas Marina picked based on each Shifty Station:
Push Shifty - "Necklace of Memories" by Takako Hashimoto.
Lift Shifty - "Let's Meet at the Hot Springs" by Chiaki Karasawa.
Sponge Shifty - "The Handsome Girlfriend" by Wataru Yos***umi.
Windmill Shifty - "Good Morning Kiss" by Yue Takasuka.
Spreader Shifty - "The Poe Clan" by Moto Hagio.
Transparent Shifty - "Marmalade Boy" by Wataru Yos***umi.
Cannon Shifty - "The Princess's Ribbon" by Megumi Mizusawa.
Bunker Shifty - "Coji-Coji" by Momoko Sakura.
Grapplinks Shifty - "Playful Kiss" by Kaoru Tada.
Ink Switch Shifty - "Tomorrow Will Be Fair Weather" by Riyu Yamakani.
Scale Shifty - "Incomplete Lovers" by Midori Murasaki.
Abyss Shifty - "Tsunami Warning" by Miki Toriyama.
Splat-Switch Shifty - "Midsummer's Damp Breath" by Moe Tsuzuki.
Bounce Pad Shifty - "The Wind and the Tree's Poem" by Keiko Takemiya.
Ride Rail Shifty - "Blow a Kiss into Your Heart" by Rejet.
Gusher Shifty - "The Rose of Versailles" by Riyoko Ikeda.
Dash Shifty - "Kiss Me, Darling!! Times 3" by Shin Minazuki
Dozer Shifty - "Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon" by Naoko Takeuchi.
Zone Shifty - "Fruits Basket" by Natsuki Takaya.
Spreader Switch Shifty - "Heartthrob Tonight" by Koi Ikeno.
Painting Shifty - "New Love and Strawberries" by Miki Wakabayashi.
Rolonium Shifty - "Ceremony of Thoughts" by Yuu Ikushima.
Blowout Shifty - "I Am Not an Angel" by Ai Yazawa.
Pipe Shifty - "Dear Senpai" by Marina (Yes, its not a manga, but rather how she sees Pearl as someone dear to her)
It is safe to say that Marina has a cod damn crush on her oblivious co-host with that specific choice of bishoujo-romance mangas with senpai-kouhai relationships.
IT’S FUCKING CANON????? THE CHARACTERS USED ARE EXCLUSIVELY FOR ROMANTIC LOVE IIRC SO
