New VMFA-251 Thunderbolts F-35C CAG-Bird Breaks Cover
Take a look at the specially painted aircraft of VMFA-251, the first East Coast operational unit of the U.S. Marine Corps to receive the F-35C.
David Cenciotti
VMFA-251 CAG bird
On Sept. 17, 2024, the U.S. Marine Corps’ Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 251 received its first F-35C Lightning II jet, at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point, North Carolina. As we reported in detail back then, the delivery of the first CV (Carrier Variant) Lightning, made VMFA-251 the first U.S. Marine Corps’ East Coast operational F-35C squadron.
Take a look at the specially painted aircraft of VMFA-251, the first East Coast operational unit of the U.S. Marine Corps to receive the F-35C.One-two ‘punch’ for the USMC
VMFA-251 is part of Marine Aircraft Group 14 (MAG-14) within the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW 2), the aviation combat element of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF).
The first aircraft delivered to the unit, BuNo 170501/CF-93, was also elected to be converted into the Thunderbolts CAG-bird and given a fresh new paint scheme to be ready for the ceremony held at MCAS Cherry Point on Dec. 5, to celebrate the reactivation of the squadron following a four-year, seven-month hiatus.
VMFA-251, known as the “Thunderbolts” or “T-Bolts,” was previously deactivated during a ceremony on April 23, 2020, at MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, after returning from deployment in 2020 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. The Thunderbolts’ deactivation concluded its 34 years as an F/A-18 Hornet squadron. The squadron was then relocated to MCAS Cherry Point to begin its transition to the F-35.
“Today, almost 83 years to the day after it was founded, VMFA-251 reactivates as an F-35C Lightning II squadron. The T-Bolts are humbled and honored for the privilege of carrying that proud legacy forward,” said Lt. Col. Evan Shockley, commanding officer, VMFA-251 in a public release.
“Our immediate focus is working towards initial operational capability, which means that VMFA-251 has enough operational F-35C Lightning II aircraft, trained pilots, maintainers, and support equipment to self-sustain its mission essential tasks. Following that, we will turn our attention towards reaching full operational capability to ensure that, when called upon, the T-Bolts will stand ready to serve our great nation.”
While the official photos published on the DVIDS website showed the CAG-bird in the hangar where the ceremony was held, a much better look at the special colored aircraft is provided by the images taken by our contributors Gherardo and Victoria Fontana.
CF-93 / 170501 was delivered to VMFA-251 on Sept. 17, 2024.
In fact, on Dec. 12, 2024, using radio callsign TBOLT 21, the CAG bird flew into NAS JRB Fort Worth for a gas and go. After landing around 14.30 LT, the aircraft remained on the ground for about an hour and a half, and then left for Yuma.
As the images in this article show, the tail includes an orange lightning bolt design over a white cross and black background, markings (including “MARINES”, “VMFA-251”, warning triangles and “JET INTAKE DANGER”), displayed in orange.
The front gear door of aircraft says “THUNDERBOLTS” on left side and “CUSTOS CAELORUM” on the right side in yellow paint. The latter translates from Latin to “Guardians of the Sky”.
The traditional U.S. military roundel is high-visibility and colored white, red, and blue.
A close up look at the nose of the F-35C VMFA-251 CAG bird.
It’s worth noticing that the CAG-bird is a specially painted aircraft that is officially assigned to the Commanding officer of the Air Wing: every embarked squadron has a CAG-bird that sports modex usually ending with the ’00’ numbers.
One-two ‘punch’ for the USMC
“Today’s arrival of our first carrier-based, fifth-generation fighter-attack aircraft represents an enormous milestone for MAG-14, MCAS Cherry Point, 2nd MAW, and the F-35 community,” said Colonel Benjamin Grant, commanding officer, MAG-14, when the aircraft was delivered to VMFA-251 on Sept. 17, 2024.
The Thunderbolts and the third F-35C unit of the USMC. The other F-35C units, based on the U.S. West Coast, at MCAS Miramar, California, are VMFA-314 and VMFA-311. Overall, VMFA-251 has become the 15th USMC squadron equipped with the F-35, adding to the two other F-35C squadrons and 12 F-35B squadrons.
“The one-two punch provided by the F-35C’s increased range and the F-35B’s STOVL capability will give MAG-14 (Marine Aircraft Group 14) and the MAGTF (Marine Air-Ground Task Force) a significant advantage in the future fight,” added the commander. “I’m proud of the team of Marines and Sailors at MAG-14 and VMFA-251 for their professionalism and dedication, and grateful for our partners in the Marine Corps and the joint force that made today’s event possible.”
“The F-35C Lightning II brings tremendous combat power to 2nd MAW, MAG-14, and MCAS Cherry Point. Its incredible range, firepower, sensors, and survivability, coupled with the fact that it is truly a Joint aircraft, makes it a lethal asset for Marine aviation,” said VMFA-251’s Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Evan Shockleym, who flew the first F-35 to the base. “The T-Bolts of VMFA-251 are excited to accept these aircraft, reactivate the squadron in the coming months, and carry their legacy forward.”
TBOLT 21 after landing at NAS JRB Fort Worth.
The F-35C had its baptism of fire last month, when U.S. Marine Corps F-35Cs, belonging to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 314, assigned to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), conducted multiple strikes on Houthi weapons storage facilities within Houthi-controlled territories in Yemen on Nov. 9-10, 2024.
The facilities housed conventional weapons, including anti-ship missiles that the Iranian-backed Houthis used to target U.S. and international military and civilian vessels navigating international waters in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
“The F-35C demonstrated its warfighting advantage by transiting contested airspace and striking targets in the heart of Houthi territory over multiple days,” stated Lt. Col. Jeffrey “Wiki” Davis, commanding officer of VMFA-314. “My Marines are honored to be first to fight with the F-35C.”
“The offensive and defensive capabilities of the F-35C absolutely enhance our air wing’s striking arm,” said Capt. Gerald “Dutch” Tritz, commander, CVW 9. “The now battle-tested Air Wing of the Future has proven itself a game changer across all carrier air wing missions.”

Crypto platform WOO X partners with Wintermute, El Salvador approves Bitcoin bonds, FIFA launches NFT collection
Crypto platform WOO X has partnered with market maker Wintermute, which will act as the designated liquidity provider for the platform. 🤝
El Salvador's digital asset regulator has given the regulatory nod for the country's first Bitcoin bonds, and FIFA is launching a nonfungible token (NFT) collection, with a chance to win World Cup tickets. ⚽
Crypto exchange platform Woo X has partnered with Wintermute, a crypto market maker and liquidity provider with over $3.6 trillion in cumulative trading volume. Wintermute will act as the designated liquidity provider for the crypto exchange.
The latest partnership between the two crypto-focused platforms is part of a proactive and transparent effort to onboard top-tier liquidity providers. The London and Singapore-based liquidity provider Wintermute is one of several market makers collaborating with the crypto platform.
Other liquidity providers, such as Selini Capital and Black Code Group, also support WOO X. Selini Capital, for example, has consistently contributed 15–25% of all maker volume on Perpetual Protocol.
WOO X CEO Jack Tan said the deal comes after years of observing the trading firm uphold a strong track record and reputation. Tan told Cointelegraph that Wintermute is a top-tier market maker and brand in the crypto industry.
He added that collaboration with Wintermute provides a boost, not only in terms of liquidity in the order books but also in giving WOO X more credibility within institutional circles.
El Salvador's long-anticipated Bitcoin bonds, also known as "Volcano Bonds,” have reportedly received the regulatory nod for a launch in early 2024.
The Volcano Bond was reportedly approved by El Salvador's Digital Assets Commission and is anticipated to launch during the first quarter of 2024, according to a Dec. 11 statement from The National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC).
El Salvador first passed the landmark legislation providing the legal framework for the Bitcoin-backed bond on Jan. 11. The Volcano Bond is intended to pay down sovereign debt and fund the construction of the country’s proposed “Bitcoin City.”
ONBTC said the bond will be issued on Bitfinex Securities Platform, a trading site for blockchain-based equities and bonds that is registered in El Salvador.
It signals the beginning of Bitcoin-based capital markets in the country, with the bonds set to last 10 years and pay 6.5% in annual return to holders.
FIFA, in collaboration with blockchain firm Modex, will launch a 100-NFT collection on Dec. 15 featuring iconography from the organization’s 92-year history and the chance to secure tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2026. ⚽
A total of 900 other digital collectibles will be issued on the Polygon network and OpenSea this month, comprising memorable moments from the ongoing tournament and digital versions of memorabilia on the FIFA+ Collect platform.

Microsoft training program deals with under-representation in IT
Australia's Victorian Federal government and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Innovation (RMIT) will work with Microsoft Australia to roll out an IT training program designed to produce career pathways for those typically under-represented in the IT industry.
The Microsoft Traineeship Program is offered for people at any stage in their profession, and they are not needed to have a background in IT.
Microsoft says that the course is suitable for those with an interest in IT including school leavers, recent graduates, those aiming to alter professions, ladies returning to work, people from cultural and linguistically varied backgrounds, indigenous people and people coping with a disability.
The Traineeship Program will include a Certificate IV in Info Innovation with paid work experience at selected Australian organisations.
Those services consist of Advance Computing, Blue Connections, Coles, CompNow, Datacom, Data # 3, IT and Beyond, MEGT Australia, Modex, oobe, and Veritec.
"With assistance from the Federal government-- as well as a network of regional partner and customer organisations-- we intend to create a brand-new pipeline of exceptional IT skill and develop amazing career chances for aiming students," remarks Microsoft Australia's handling director Steven Worrall.
"For aiming trainees-- school-leavers, career-changers, return-to-work mums and others looking to get in the industry-- this program offers an exceptional foot-in-the-door. It's a gateway to interesting and gratifying IT professions with vital on-the-job knowing."
Victorian Minister for Jobs, Development and Trade, Martin Pakula, went to RMIT to reveal the government's $200,000 investment into the program.
"Through this program, we are investing in the next generation of IT experts, ensuring they have the abilities and real-world experience to create ahead in their professions," states Pakula.
Microsoft says that Australia will lack 100,000 ICT workers by 2024 since there aren't enough brand-new graduates to satisfy need.
Microsoft at first released the Traineeship Program in late 2018, beginning with New South Wales prior to broadening to both South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. Now the program is presenting in Victoria.
Datacom's Australian handling director Bob Peebles states the business is thrilled to be part of the program. The business has supported 14 people and Sydney and 2 in Adelaide.
"We're pleased this program is broadening to Melbourne. We'll be searching for trainees to join our growing Victorian operations," says Peebles.
The Labor Government is also investing in training, abilities and college to make Victoria the 'Education State'.
The very first cohort of Victoria-based Microsoft Traineeship participants will start the program in the coming weeks.

MODEX 2018: Old and new have never been so far apart
http://bit.ly/2qWYNNq
MODEX, ProMat and CeMAT are the biggest global material handling and logistics supply chain tech trade shows. But as I walked the corridors of this year’s MODEX in Atlanta, I was particularly aware of the widening disparity between the old and new.
Stats: Material Handling and Logistics
The 2018 MHI Annual Industry Report found that the 2018 adoption rate for driverless vehicles in material handling was only 10% and the adoption rate for AI was just 5% while the rate for robotics and automation was 35%.
The report indicated the top technologies expected to be a source of either disruption or competitive advantage within the next 3-5 years to be: (shown in order of importance)
Robotics and Automation – picking, packing, sorting orders; loading, unloading, stacking; receiving and put-away; assembly operations; QC and inspection processing
Predictive Analytics – manage lead times; synchronize links; avoid missteps
Internet-of-Things (IoT) – enable real-time info flow; predictive analytics; and QC
Artificial Intelligence – faster deliveries; reduced redundancies; improved analytics
Driverless Vehicles – autonomous vehicles (and conversion kits for existing AGVs, tows and lifts); SLAM and point-to-point navigation; some with manipulators
The report also listed the key barriers to adoption of driverless vehicles and AI: (shown in order of importance)
lack of a clear business case
lack of adequate talent
lack of understanding of the technology landscape
lack of access to capital to make investments
cybersecurity
Other research reports were more optimistic in their forecasts:
A $3,500 report from QY Research made rosy forecasts for global parcel sorting robots and last mile delivery robots
A $10,000 report from Interact Analysis forecast five years of double-digit growth for AMRs and AGVs converted to AMRs
A $4,450 report from Grand View Research forecasts significant growth through 2024 driven by increasing demand for autonomous and safe point-to-point material handling equipment
Transforming lifts, tows, carts and AGVs to AMRs and VGVs
Human-operated AGVs, tows, lifts and other warehouse and factory vehicles have been a staple in material movement for decades. Now, with low-cost cameras, sensors and advanced vision systems, they are slowly transitioning to more flexible autonomous mobile robots that can tow, lift and carry. AMRs are Automated Mobile Robots which can be human operated or autonomous or a combination of both.
Vendors providing conversion systems for existing lifts and carts to Vision Guided Vehicles (AMRs) for line-side replenishment, pallet movement, etc. include:
RoboCV
Balyo
Seegrid
Plus all the forklift OEMs that partner with these kit providers
Vendors providing grasping capabilities in addition to autonomous mobility include:
InVia Robotics
Iam Robotics
Magazino
Dorabot
Vendors providing high speed random grasping from moving conveyors or bins:
RightHand Robotics
Universal Logic
Kinema SystemsVendors providing AMRs, VGVs and AIVs (Autonomous Intelligent Vehicles) for goods-to-person, load transfer, restocking, etc. include:
6 River Systems
Aethon
Beijing Geekplus Technology (Geek+)
Clearpath’s OTTO robots
Fetch Robotics
Grenzebach
Kuka
Locus Robotics
Mobile Industrial Robots
STILL
Swisslog
Toyota’s Autopilot
Vecna Robotics
and others
Navigation systems have changed as well and often don’t require floor grid markings, barcodes or extensive indoor localization and segregation systems such as those used by Kiva Systems (and subsequently Amazon). SLAM and combinations of floor grids, SLAM, path planning, and collision avoidance systems are adding flexibility to swarms of point-to-point mobile robots.
Kiva look-alikes emerge
In March 2012, in an effort to make their fulfillment centers as efficient as possible, Amazon acquired Kiva Systems for $775 million and almost immediately took them in-house, leaving a disgruntled set of Kiva customers who couldn’t expand and a larger group of prospective clients who were left with a technological gap and no solutions. I wrote about this gap and about the whole community of new providers that had sprung up to fill the void and were beginning to offer and demonstrate their solutions. Many of those new providers are listed above.
Recently, another set of competitors has emerged in this space:
Companies started in China who copied the Kiva Systems formula to provide Kiva-like goods-to-person robot services and dynamic free-form warehousing to the major Chinese e-commerce vendors such as:
Alibaba
JD (JingDong)
VIPShop
Tencent
Now some of those companies are expanding outside of China and SE Asia to Europe and America:
Grey Orange Robotics
Beijing Geekplus Technology
Xinyi Logistics Science & Technology (Alog)
Shanghai Express Warehouse (Quicktron)
Hanzhou Hikrobot Technology (HIK)
Bottom Line
There are many forms of warehousing. But the area where NextGen tools are needed the most are in high-turn distribution and fulfillment centers.
The rate of acceptance of e-commerce is changing warehousing forever, particularly distribution and fulfillment centers. Total e-commerce sales for 2017 were $453.5 billion, an increase of 16.0% from 2016. E-commerce sales in 2017 accounted for 8.9% of total sales versus 8.0% of total sales in 2016 according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Consequently flexibility and an ability to handle an ever-increasing number of parcels is paramount and fixed costs for conveyors, elevators and old style AS/RS systems has become anathema to warehouse executives worldwide. Hence the need to invest in NextGen Supply Chain methods as shown at shows like MODEX.
Although 31,000 people went to this year’s MODEX, I wonder how many share my view about the disparity between the old and new shown at the show. Certainly there were enough new tech vendors offering “a mixed fleet of intelligent, collaborative mobile robots and fully-autonomous, zero-infrastructure AGVs designed specifically for safe and flexible material flows in dynamic, human-centric environments.” Yet the emphasis on the show – and the favorable booth space placement – was to the old-line vendors rather than the NextGen companies listed above.
Go figure!
