I love the PSvita! It's my most favorite handheld and gaming console of all time! It was way ahead of it's time bringing TV console quality gaming in a portable form-factor, 6 years ahead of the Nintendo Switch. But due to it's expensive proprietary memory cards and the emerging smart phone market of 2012, the PSvita saw little success outside Japan & was abandon by Sony in 2017. Sony later official discontinued the system on March 1st 2019. Despite all of this, the PSvita has a dedicated thriving community of modders and game developers even to this day! With new games & homebrews being released on a monthly basis! My long answer is under the cut.

Many years ago, I bought a box of blank greeting cards and some decorative paper and started making small collages to put on the cards. I didn’t really know what I was doing, so I came up with simple designs, such as little nature scenes with suns and flowers and mountains. I made up my method by trying various things and finding out what worked for me.

In 2018, I started watching anime. The first anime that I watched were Studio Ghibli films. I loved the films, and I wanted to make a collage of the studio’s mascot, Totoro, who was my favorite character. 

Totoro, of course, fit right in with a nature scene, but I hadn’t made a collage of a character before. I wanted to keep my rendition fairly close to Hayao Miyazaki’s character design, because I thought that this would be a fun way for me to explore that design in another medium and to pay tribute to the character’s original creator. 

I looked at my growing collection of Ghibli merchandise and selected an artwork of Totoro by Miyazaki. Using that artwork as a pattern, I cut decorative paper into shapes and assembled the shapes into a collage.

In 2019, I found out about Fullmetal Alchemist, watched the anime adaptations, and read the manga. I loved the Fullmetal Alchemist universe, and I wanted to join the online fandom. 

I started this Tumblr blog that year, on Fullmetal Alchemist Day. I soon saw a post about an upcoming holiday gift exchange in the fandom. I sent the gift exchange blog an ask describing my collages, mentioning that my most recent collage was of an anime character, and wondering if a scan of a collage of someone’s favorite Fullmetal Alchemist character would be acceptable as a gift for the exchange. One of the moderators, Mod Flour (@flourchildwrites), thoughtfully answered my ask and invited me to send a picture of my last collage. I had already given away that collage, so I decided to make a collage of one of my favorite Fullmetal Alchemist characters. 

I wanted to keep my rendition fairly close to Hiromu Arakawa’s character design, because I now knew from my previous experience that this would be a fun way for me to explore that design in another medium and to pay tribute to the character’s original creator. 

I looked through The Complete Art of Fullmetal Alchemist, which I had bought by then, and I selected an artwork of Riza Hawkeye by Arakawa. Using that artwork as a pattern, I cut origami paper and card stock into shapes and assembled the shapes into a collage. 

I scanned the collage of Riza and sent the scan to all of the gift exchange moderators, Mod Flour, Mod Tas (https://archiveofourown.org/users/ruikosakuragi/pseuds/Tasia), and Mod Waddi (@waddiwitch). Their replies were so kind and encouraging, and they even asked if they could share the collage on their blog, which made me feel so welcome!

They shared the collage at https://fmasecretsanta2020.tumblr.com/post/189691492722/behold-the-first-gift-of-our-holiday-season, and their post inspired me to make a collage of another one of my favorite Fullmetal Alchemist characters as a companion piece.

I looked through the art book again and selected an artwork featuring Roy Mustang. After making the collage of Roy, I posted it at https://regardingroyai.tumblr.com/post/189737723752/roy-mustang-of-hiromu-arakawas-fullmetal.

For the gift exchange itself, I made a collage of Edward Elric for @pinceauarcenciel. I based the portrait of Edward on artwork from Chapter 61 of the manga, and I based the background on a frame from the first anime adaptation’s second opening. My choice of background was intended to personalize the gift collage by alluding to the giftee’s username, because the second opening theme is by L’Arc-en-Ciel, and the frame that I selected contains a rainbow. I used art tissue for the rainbow and clouds in the background to make them look translucent. I used twenty colors for this gift collage, which is the highest number of colors that I have used for any one collage. For the gift exchange the following year, I made a collage of Roy and Riza for @areyousanta. The previous year, I had been their giftee, and they had made a wonderful gift artwork for me. That artwork was holiday themed and humorous. I wanted to make a gift collage for them that would be holiday themed and humorous too. I had in mind particular facial expressions, poses, and outfits, which I based on assorted elements from about two dozen artworks by Arakawa, about half of which were from the art book and half from the manga. For Roy’s gloved hand, I photographed my hand with a similar glove on and used the photo as my pattern. For the candle and the heart-shaped flame, I improvised. For the caption, I pored through speech bubbles in the manga to find the letters that I wanted, and I cut black origami paper into shapes to match the manga typeface. When I put everything together, it all somehow coalesced into just what I had envisioned. My choice of background was intended to personalize the gift collage by incorporating the giftee’s favorite color, because their blog mentions that a grey-blue sky color is their favorite. It really brightened my holidays to be able to give my gift collages to other Fullmetal Alchemist fans and to receive lovely gift artworks and kind and encouraging notes from other Fullmetal Alchemist fans as well! 

I have also made collages for other occasions relating to Fullmetal Alchemist, such as Arakawa’s birthday, Fullmetal Alchemist Day, International Fullmetal Alchemist Tumbleweed Appreciation Day, Riza’s Day, Royai Day, and Roy’s Day.

People’s responses to my collages have continued to be so kind and encouraging! It brings me so much joy to see the likes and reblogs and to read the replies, comments, and tags!

I am so happy to have found out that I enjoy making collages relating to Fullmetal Alchemist and that people enjoy seeing my collages!

As I have continued to make my collages, I have continued to develop my method, including by testing out and adopting new materials and tools. For instance, I have worked with a variety of papers, including amate paper, art tissue, card stock, lokta paper, metallic art paper, origami paper, papyrus, and washi paper. I have changed the types of adhesive and the brands of craft knife and cutting mat that I use. I have bought a light box and a rolling trimmer. I have used my phone to make scans and to take photos, and the photos have tended to turn out better than the scans, so now I just take photos.

The method that I will describe here is the one that I have been developing during the past few years. I will illustrate this description with images of steps in my process of making a new collage of Roy Mustang in honor of Roy’s Day (June 1). 

When I make a collage, I start by choosing who or what will appear in it. Then I select artwork or other images featuring anyone or anything that I want the collage to depict. For a Fullmetal Alchemist collage, I usually select an artwork from the art book or from the manga.

Since there was a solar eclipse this spring, it seemed fitting to base this new collage on a manga panel from a scene set on the Promised Day. I chose a panel from Chapter 101.

After I have selected artwork, I usually take a photo of it in the art book or in some edition of the manga.

My Fullmetal Alchemist manga collection began with the Complete Box Set published by VIZ Media and now also includes the Fullmetal Edition published by VIZ and the kanzenban published by Square Enix. I especially like how the artwork looks in the kanzenban, so when I am making a collage based on a manga panel, I usually take a photo of that panel in the kanzenban. 

That is what I did for my new collage of Roy.

After I take the photo, I increase its contrast so that I can see its details more clearly and so that I can’t see any images that may have bled through from the other side of the page. 

Then I choose a size for the collage, and I adjust the scale of the photo so that it will print at that size. My smallest collages are smaller than playing cards, and my largest are similar in size to sheets of letter paper.

I wanted my new collage of Roy to be about the about the same size as the manga panel in the kanzenban. The print size of the photo was nearly five times larger than that, so I adjusted the scale to 19% before printing.

Next, I print out the photo several times, and I use one of the printouts of the photo to make a color chart. 

To make the chart, I start by choosing the papers that I will use for the collage. I have made one black-and-white collage, but on average, I use about seven or eight colors when making a collage. 

If I am basing the collage on color artwork, I look for papers in colors that resemble the colors that Arakawa used in the artwork. If I am basing the collage on black-and-white artwork, I usually refer to color artworks in the art book, in the Fullmetal Edition, or in the kanzenban to see what colors Arakawa has used for the people, animals, and things that I want to depict, then I look for papers in colors that resemble those colors.

For instance, in color artworks in the art book, in the Fullmetal Edition, and in the kanzenban, Arakawa has used red for Black Hayate’s collar and green for Riza’s clipboard, so I looked for papers in those colors to use when depicting those items in my collages. 

Although the covers and spines of the art book and the Fullmetal Edition volumes, as well as the dust jacket of one kanzenban volume, are adorned with shiny metallic text and symbols, I haven’t seen any metallic ink or foil used in Arakawa’s artworks themselves. So I am not sure whether some items depicted in her artworks, such as the Amestrian State Military uniforms’ buttons, pins, and trim, Roy’s military decorations, and Riza’s earrings, are metallic. But those items are rendered in similar ways to some other items depicted in her artworks, such as Edward’s automail, Alphonse’s armor, and the State Alchemists’ watches, which are all definitely metallic. So in many of my collages, I have chosen to use silver metallic papers for the military uniforms’ pins and trim and for Roy’s military decorations, and to use gold metallic papers for the uniforms’ buttons and for Riza’s earrings. I like how metallic papers reflect light, so I like to include those shiny papers in my collages.

After I have chosen the papers that I will use for the collage, I cut a small square from a corner of each of them, arrange the small squares into a column, and use adhesive to affix the column of squares to a blank space on the printout of the photo. Above the column of squares, I usually list any character depicted in the photo. Next to the column of squares, I list where in the collage I will use the respective colors.

The following image shows the color chart that I made for my new collage of Roy.

After making the color chart, I start to cut the papers into shapes, using the other printouts of the photo as patterns.

When I am working with opaque paper, I place the pattern on top of the paper and cut the paper into shapes on a cutting mat.

When I am working with translucent paper, I place the paper on top of the pattern and cut the paper into shapes on a sheet of white card stock on the surface of a light box. The white card stock makes the light softer and protects the surface of the light box from scratches.

When I am making a portrait of a character, I usually start by cutting black card stock into a silhouette of the character. This silhouette will perform several functions. It will provide a firm base for the smaller paper shapes that I will place on top of it. It will help me know where to place those smaller shapes, and it will also provide some outlines around and between them, as well as some other details, such as seams and shadows. And it will consolidate those smaller shapes into one larger shape that will be easier to place on the collage’s background.

The following image shows the silhouette that I made of Roy.

Next, I cut translucent paper into the shape of the character’s head. I usually use origami paper in a color similar to the character’s skin tone. When I made my collage of Edward, I layered two different colors of origami paper to try to match his skin tone.

For any details that are in black ink in the original artwork, I usually use black origami paper, because it looks dark enough and sharp enough to seem visually similar to black ink.

I usually start with the character’s eyes, because they are so important to the facial expression, and I want to give myself plenty of time to do this delicate detail work slowly and carefully. Then I continue with the character’s mouth, nose, and ears. 

When I am ready to assemble the paper shapes that will form these features, I put a printout on the light box and put the paper shape of the character’s head on the printout. Then, with the printout as a placement guide, I use adhesive to affix the paper shapes for the eyes, mouth, nose, and ears to the paper shape for the head.

The following image shows the paper shapes for Roy’s head, eye, nose, and mouth on a printout on the light box. The printout is the same one that I used as a pattern for the silhouette.

After I have added the features to the character’s head, I work on other elements that will be included in the character’s portrait, such as the character’s hair, neck, hands, and outfit, and any items that the character is holding.

When I want to add details to any translucent paper shapes, I usually use the same method as I did to add the features to the character’s head.

When I want to add details to any opaque paper shapes, I usually use the silhouette, which can visually fill in those details.

For example, for my new collage, I cut two opaque paper shapes to form the highlighted areas of Roy’s coat. Later, when I affixed the two opaque paper shapes to the silhouette, its black card stock visually filled in the seam between them and also the shadowed area below them.

When I have made all of the paper shapes that will be included in the character’s portrait, I arrange the paper shapes similarly to how they will appear in the portrait.

Next, I use adhesive to affix the paper shapes to the silhouette.

Next, I make the background for the collage. I use the rolling trimmer to cut a background with a neat rectangular shape, and I use adhesive to affix the portrait to the background.

Then I make any borders that will be added. I use the rolling trimmer to cut borders with consistent thicknesses, and I use adhesive to affix the borders to the collage.  

The manga panel of Roy has two borders, so I put two borders on the collage.

The following image shows the portrait of Roy affixed to the background of the collage, with borders affixed to the upmost edge and the rightmost edge of the collage.

After I have put together the collage, I take a photo of it and write a photo caption, an image description, and any other text that I want to share. Then I create a photo post on Tumblr, upload the photo, add the text, and save the post as a draft, usually sometime before the date when I want to post the collage. That way, the collage will be all set to post when that date arrives.

Beyond the Citadel - Geth

Mass Effect, 08.22.17

My full piece for Beyond the Citadel, a charity fanzine that focuses on Mass Effect’s non-Citadel races! (Tumblr ate the dashboard one pls click for non-blurry) Since geth were an option, naturally I decided to torture myself and draw all of Legion’s little tubes and weird armor plates again but in full body this time haha oh god why. Stylistically I was super-inspired by the Dragon Age: Inquisition tarot cards because then you can put pretty shapes and textures instead of an actual background and also by one of my favorite environments in the game - the geth consensus.

.I’m going to be completely honest and say that going back through my art just to find five pieces that I’m proud of has just reignited my love for drawing. Like I used to draw so much of my OCs and so much... ya know... ,’;)c ...that I’m wondering why I ever stopped doing that. I mean, I know why, because people just weren’t interested at all, but I loved it. I’m looking through it and I love it still.

.Marcus; his tarot card was just beautiful, and I don’t have the full picture anymore because it probably wasn’t drawn in 2017(?) I can’t remember. But I loved it, I still think it looks pretty sweet. Just the design of it, it’s lacking in skill in regards to his hair and things but still, the aesthetic is tasty.

.Cullen x Samson; I loved this picture, it’s really tender and soft, and the belly folds just bring me joy. Also it was an art trade so I got a sweet picture in return.

.No One; the whole picture is one of him as he was then, and a picture of him when he was younger, and I think the side by side comparison and the body language change was just amazing. He’s standing tall on the left, proud of who he is, and on the right he’s slumped over, sagging, hiding behind a length of ratty hair. He is ugly on the left, however, so I chopped that off :).

.That Dude; There’s something about his bowl cut that I love. I remember he’s my DS2 character, but I can’t remember his name. I think it’s Lawley? But I’m not sure. Also the nose, pointy, delicious. A wimp. Clearly a mage, and he totally kissed Manscorpion Tark. :)c.

.Victor; I loved this piece just because of the story behind it, the idea that Victor just chops all his hair off, messily, bloody, cuts up his scalp a little in desperation, it just sings to something in me.

.Gaspard; I love him. The tan lines, the simpleness of the shirt because I was too lazy to paint it up. The little flicks of slightly loose hair at the front. He’s tasty. 

.Ishalenanatarasylnin; I put this through so many filters, and it’s messy as hell, but there’s something in the lighting and it looks ethereal. This guy is otherworldly and I think I portrayed that pretty well. And the halla horns, this isn’t a Dalish man to be trusted. I definitely tried t do something with putting little things in there that spoke of some kind of story.

.Ealther; my DS3 character, I cannot remember how I made those lava droplets, but they just look fantastic don’t they? Amazing. He’s embered, he’s ready, and he’s a bloody coward and I love him. Also a mage, because why would I not be a sorcerer in Dark Souls?

.Skeever; this is my Skyrim boy, and I love him a lot. I remember drawing this some time after I deleted all my accounts, and it felt amazing to just draw something for no reason other than to draw it. Also I modded the hell out of Skyrim and he was once Stinky Rat Man and is now A Very Cute Rat Man instead.

.Leon V Mr X; All that red, and the fact that Leon’s clothing is entirely grey almost, and not blue at all. That was a huge lesson to learn about colour theory and all of that kind of thing.

.Kruber; I just like this one because it was the first body pillow I created, and it was also sent to Fatshark as well. Which is fantastic. They showed it on a livestream thing lmao.

.Sienna; the lighting on this, her hair, it’s beautiful. It could be wilder, it could be stronger, but I was just so proud of this when I made it, and I’m still proud of it.

.Thennris; did anyone get the Dragon Age joke? Ah! I made a whole back story for this guy whilst I was drawing this, but then I don’t really play Remnants anymore. So it’s kind of wasted. But this was the first thing I made an effort to do a background on, I just couldn’t stop drawing. There’s a passion in making this for sure.

.Marcus, Andrastopher, Goddard; my three Dragon Age heroes, it’s beautiful. I still think it’s the best thing I’ve ever drawn, and it damn near took me three days. The detail in it, I mean, Goddard’s armour? Hellish, but worth it. Beautiful. And it’s an idea I’d had in my mind for years, just the idea of them all sitting around a campfire together? That’s incredible. I also hope people can tell Andrastopher is big, I tried to make him look a little too large, hopefully it doesn’t come off as like bad foreshortening.

.Looking back over all of them, it’s weird that 2017 was very brown, and 2018 was very grey, and 2019 is just various reds. Specifically I don’t know what that means, maybe I was just in those kinds of moods when I made the best art. I like all of these pieces, even if the art doesn’t have the skill that I have now. But, I’m not going to go back over my stuff and complain about how it is bad, that’s an awful thing to do, my art was good, and I liked it when I made it so I still like it. There’s a happiness in that history.

.I do wonder if anyone looked at my art and was so amazed that it branded in their brain. I doubt it, I don’t think I’m that good, but, hell, if anyone did, like, let me know, that’s interesting to know.

Hiya Simmers! Is it hot outside, or is that just my gland problem? Anyway, let’s not worry about that – we’ve got some awesome new stuff to talk about! With all this Summer heat and with Sims 4 Island Living’s release just around the corner, we’ve got a few new free updates we are so excited to share with you! So let’s slap on some sunglasses, squeeze into that swimsuit, and dive on in… What’s New?

Randomize Traits Button:

A Randomize Traits button has been added to CAS and in the Live Mode Age-Up Molecule. Oh yes, it’s now just right there, waiting to be clicked. Over and over and over and over. I can’t really believe it either, but here it is. The dark days without this small hero are now just a distant unpleasant memory. From here on out, if you just want to grab-and-go your Sim’s personality and get the heck outta CAS, or if you want to add a little challenge to who your Sims might be, it’s just one click away. Jeepers, this feels good. Seriously, I’ve been wanting this forever. Lounge Chair:

Everyone (even you) gets a FREE LOUNGE CHAIR! That’s right, we’ve added a delightfully Portable Lounge Chair, so you can now lounge by the pool the way you’ve always wanted: Laid back. With your mind on your Simoleons and your Simoleons on your mind. It’s Pride Month!

Show your pride with some fantastically colorful new clothing. The rainbow leggings are my personal favorite. Nah, maybe the body suit is my favorite. But now that you mention it, I can’t stop dressing my Sims in the new t-shirts — created in partnership with the It Gets Better Project — so I guess I just love it all! In addition, we’ve also included a selection of decorative Pride flags for hanging on your Sims’ walls. Finally, we’ve updated our bathroom door sets in-game so that every bathroom door also includes a gender-neutral version for builders, and includes a full suite of color swatches for mixing and matching to your heart’s content. Happy Pride Month, everyone! Stilt Foundations:

Or as I like to call them, High Heels for your House. Or House Heels. These things don’t need to be limited to just the tropics. Stilts are a great partner in crime to manipulated and flat terrain alike in any biosphere. You can find them in Build Mode alongside all the other regular Foundation types. Now go get your stilt on. Ok, we may have gone a bit overboard here… There are 350 new color swatches spread across all of the doors and arches in the base game catalog. If you’ve ever wanted matching doors in Light Brown, Reddish Brown, Brown, Dark Brown, Gray, White, or Black, then this is certainly the update for you! A Couple New Lot Traits:

Clothing Optional: This new venue-only lot trait will inspire your Sims to — you guessed it — get nude.

Off-The-Grid: Now you can live out your nomadic fantasy on any lot. Applying this lot trait will remove your Sim’s use of power and running water, but on the upside it keeps your bills down. Keep a lookout for existing objects with the “Works Off-The-Grid” note in the Buy Catalog.

More Toddler Diaper Colors:

We added some L’il Swimmies Splashy Diapers! You don’t necessarily have to use them for splashing in the water, but that’s where our brains were at when we made them. We made these not only in anticipation for Island Living, but we also thought you’d appreciate more swimming options for your toddlers to use in the Seasons Kiddie Pool. Back Float:

A new Back Float interaction is available for Sims swimming in the pool. Click on that water. Try it out. Take a load off. Fishing Additions:

Brace yourself, we’re about to cast you into a deep dive…

We added several new interactions to allow players to fish in different ways and interact with other Sims around fishing activities.

Sims can perform a few new Fishing-based socials to gain useful info (via UI TNS/Notebook) and push NPCs to Fish.

Fishing is now joinable.

Improved fishing interaction tuning and autonomy to make the interaction more efficient and fun.

Upper skill levels now provide more meaningful rewards, with new Interactions added to Fishing skill levels

New high skill cast interaction “Angle for Big Catch” increases chance of getting rarer fish.

New high-skill VFX visuals on Rare fishing spots.

Ability to now “Mentor Sims in Fishing.”

Fishing UI has improved information, including Notebook info with Bait information.

Tuning for fish that can be caught is unique per world & more fishing spots added to some of our previously shipped worlds.

New bait preference system applied to most existing fish that modify catch chances.

Ceiling Fan Updates:

Ceiling Fans will now cool a room if you have Seasons and the fan is on. Oh yeah, speaking of which, we also added the ability to turn them On and Off. And while we were at it, we figured we’d make them dry off damp Sims too. Ceiling Objects Build Sort:

We also added a new Ceiling Objects Build sort category to make things like Fans easier to find. Swimming Things:

There is now a chance for interesting things to happen to your Sims while swimming, like getting a cramp or losing their suit (eek!). Swimming also now gives your Sims a boost in Fitness skill gain. Part-Time Jobs Update:

And last but not least (you still with me?) all existing Part-Time Jobs are no longer just for Teens. That’s right, now elders could work as Fast Food Employees. Young Adults could be Babysitters if they want. Why not? The Part-Time world is your oyster. Oh oh oh — and one last thing on that note: You can now have two Part-Time Jobs at once and pick between shifts. Wowee. And now on to the unintended features… General Issues.

Toddler’s Needs will now always be refilled while they’re at daycare.

Exterior trim now correctly applies to rounded flat blocks.

Adult Sims will now be able to successfully put Toddlers to bed. I wonder what their secret is. I may need to tap them for tips.

Sims on fire are now able to safely extinguish themselves in a pool. That’s refreshing.

The Dizzy Palms Ceiling Fan’s blades now tilt in the right direction.

Toddlers will no longer be put down from the high chair before they’ve finished eating. Patience mama, they’re still learning.

Gender Preference now affects flirt options.

Teen Sims will no longer spin into their Everyday outfit when going to school. If Randy wants to wear his swim trunks to school, well that’s Randy’s business.

Flirting with another Sim in a group conversation no longer increases the entire group’s Romance with you. That was awkward.

NPC Invites for Talent Showcase and Lounge will now take you to the appropriate venue.

We have fixed that bizarre issue where you’d have your Sims travel home, and then you load into your home lot, and your Sim’s skewer thumbnails are all greyed out like they’re not there, but when you hover over the skewer it tells you your Sims are at home. But like, they’re not at home. You’re staring at this empty lot, unable to play your Sims and you’re like.. “Is this even my home?”. And you start to question whether you selected the right lot on the map, but then you’re like “Wait, yeah – this is totally my home. But where are my Sims? It’s telling me they’re at home, but they’re not here.” Anyway, this should be fixed now.

Ghosts will no longer be obsessively calling you 5-ish times a day to see if you want to come over and hang out. They’ve been working on their self-control and are limited to at most one call per day now.

Terrain Paint now functions properly on Laptop Mode for AMD graphics cards.

NPC Sims will no longer get a sudden need to get nude after waking up if they have traveled off-lot and returned while you are visiting them. This one was weird. I wish I could show you the bug video.

Get Famous

We’ve toned down the amount of excitement that occurs when a celebrity makes an appearance outside of Del Sol Valley. They should be showing up outside of Del Sol Valley less often as well, so that should cut down on the ruckus.

It was a setup! I’ve been framed! It wasn’t me, I swear! You’ll pay for this! You got the wrong guy, it was Wilma! Wilma, I tell you! Celebrity Sims will no longer be falsely accused of stealing things. And for Wilma’s sake, I hope they get over what happened in the past.

Captain Sigma’s Gig costume no longer includes a chicken mask. That was a fowl fashion choice.

Performing “Tell a Group Story” Interaction Goals will now complete for the Fan Meet & Greet Event.

We fixed the issue with Del Sol Valley’s terrain disappearing when View Distance was set to High. Graphics cards (that we know of) that were affected by the issue:

We fixed the Del Sol Valley skyline texture glitch after exiting CAS.

Elder Sims will no longer have the option to retire from the Acting Career, just to be met with a sad, sad reality. Before they were taunted with a TNS telling them they got this big great pension and now they can sit back and relax, but the pension amount was §0. That’s just so dark…

Seasons

Now, if you travel during a holiday, the holiday decorations on your neighbor’s homes will be removed after the holiday ends. They were admittedly being either a bit overly festive or just a tad lazy. Either way, it’s been dealt with.

Sims will no longer gluttonously guzzle/gulp/slurp/chug water/milk/orange juice during events. No need to be so shellfish.

Jogging Vampires will no longer hold an umbrella while jogging because that’s just silly.

Cats & Dogs

Strays can now eat and use litter boxes without having to make the lot a Cat Hangout. You poor poor babies. You’re safe now.

Existing Sims/Saves will once again be able to lecture their pets. Now you can let Biscuit know how you truly feel when she jumps up on the counter.

It’s been ongoing, but we are actively calming those overly excited pets. Your queue should no longer fill up with a stack of a zillion bubbles from your pets when you run certain interactions. We’ve been working on this issue for a while with a few other fixes, but it’s been rearing its head with new repro steps here and there. So hopefully this fish sticks.

Having a puppy or kitten nearby will no longer interrupt your Sim’s bath or shower. We swear they weren’t doing that on porpoise.

Sims are now able to walk through doors with Country Curtains.

City Living

Building pieces in apartments will no longer be invisible when viewing from the upper floor. That must have been very disconcerting to not know what happened to your stuff.

Cleared out some pesky extra plants floating around the Romance Festival.

Your Sims should now be able to buy art from the Street Gallery object during a Yard Sale.

Oh this one’s a doozy. Get this: Talking John and Potty Mouth 2.0 toilets no longer play their sound on an endless loop when a child Sim runs the Use & Massage interaction, even after the toilet is destroyed. Bonus points to SimGuruJill for keeping a straight face writing that one.

Foundations will no longer cut out the floor of a Penthouse.

Coffee and Tea is safe to drink again. Sims will no longer receive the “Lethal Heat” buff and die upon returning home after drinking three hot beverages.

Get Together

Empty Clubs will no longer linger in your Clubs Panel. They are now self-aware enough to know when the party’s over and it is time to go home.

Get To Work

Coworkers are now spawning for the Science career. Yes, they missed you too.

Breast Feed is no longer available for male Sim parents of non-alien babies. Only alien spawn possess the cosmic knowledge of the most nourishing MANaries.

Strangerville

We fixed some buggy dog-walking behavior in Strangerville.

We shortened up the time it takes to complete the Give Orders Daily Task in the Courageous Captain Rank of the Officer Branch of the Military Career. That was a mouthful.

Jungle Adventure

You will no longer receive countless notifications when you leave your kitten or puppy at home while vacationing in Selvadorada.

Vampires

Vampire Sims will now once again gain points after they reach the Grandmaster level on pre-April (2019) patch saves.

Your Vampires will no longer be unrightfully chastised by NPCs for drinking their blood after they specifically asked if it was ok. Like, I’m trying to be polite here and you said it was fine, and now you’re like all bent about it… what gives?

Perfect Sun Resistance Vampires will no longer use umbrellas when routing in the sun. Flaunt it, baby.

We fixed the weirdness with trying to add points while drinking the Draught of Reconfiguration. Now you should be able to add points just fine and your options won’t be greyed out.

Cured Vampires will now change body temperature. Why you gotta be so cold?

Laundry Day

Sims will now hold laundry bags the right way. What is the right way, you ask? Trust me, it’s better than how they were holding it before.

I love the PSvita! It's my most favorite handheld and gaming console of all time! It was way ahead of it's time bringing TV console quality gaming in a portable form-factor, 6 years ahead of the Nintendo Switch. What names do you go by?

Robo Bonobo and EGMadness EGMadness has been my tag for the longest time, it's basically my initials with an "-adness" at the end, I thought it sounded nifty at the time. Robo Bonobo is a newer tag I'm transitioning into because I think it's even more clever and it reflects my robot character favoritism.

How did you get into Lethal League?

I believe the original was recommended to me on Steam a loooooong time ago and I just took a shot in the dark with it because the trailer looked sick. Definitely a gamble I'm glad I took.

What’s your current Lethal League experience?

Only 44 hours recorded in the original, but around 160 clocked in Blaze thus far. Won the only tourney for it I've entered (the previous year's Michigan M@sters side tourney, in fact), and I'm floating around 4th Division in ranked this season. I'm currently grinding hard to help me get that pot bonus, though! See me in 1st Div by the end of March.

Who are your main/side/counter character picks?

I'm a Doombox one-trick. I'm too stuck on DB's float movement to be able to use anyone else, flying's just too much fun! I've been trying to learn Dust & Ashes just to branch out, but I have a lot of double jump and glide tech to perfect before that pick comes anywhere close to competitive viability for me.

What are your favourite character outfits?

Eaaaasily Prime Poppa Doombox. Gotta rep the red, white, and blue. U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A! Also sometimes Safety Weapon if I'm really feeling it.

What are your stage preferences?

I like cramped stages like Scrap Desert and Room 21. They really complement Doombox's vertical angles and let me suffocate my opponents easier.

What input method do you use?

Keyboard! Only fighting game where I actually prefer it. Started playing the original Lethal League on it years ago and it just stuck with me.

The tournament is played on PS4, do you have a solution for that?

Whoops! I didn't even think about that, thanks for letting me know! Looks like I'm ordering an adapter off of Amazon tonight. I was under the impression adapters would be part of the officially-provided setups.

Who do you hope to meet at Michigan Masters?

Melleracappeller, my favorite Lethal League player of all time. That man's got the sauce, paper, juice, and clout.

What made you pick up speedrunning the arcade mode?

I saw Buffet Time's arcade run at Awesome Games Done Quick while I was browsing YouTube a while back, and I felt like I could do better. I was just finishing polishing up my world record times on my main speedrunning game (Madness Retaliation) at the time, so I was in a particularly competitive mood as I watched the run; I couldn't just sit there and think that I would do better, I had to know I would by proving it. When I finished watching the run, I decided to open up the game, practice, learn, and really get serious about arcade running. I don't make a claim like 'I could do better' without being willing to back it up!

What other games do you play?

Mostly fighting games. The other big competitive fighting game that I'm grinding at the moment is Super Smash Bros. Project+, a super sick Brawl mod that you should 100% check out if you have a Wii, a copy of Brawl, and a 2 gigabyte SD card on hand. Also Arcana Heart 3 Love Max Six Stars. That game is FIRE. I will shill it until I die.

Is there anything else you’d like to say to the community?

I would like to urge anyone with the desire to get the Lethal League ball rolling with their local FGCs to do anything they can to make sure that the game is at events, be it casuals or tourneys. The most important part of scene growth is exposure, so don't be afraid to get your setup moving! My ‘Favorite Cards’ of the year continues! This time i will include my thoughts and opinions on my choice of cards and their ranking!

♕ 1st Umi: I just love and adore everything about this card! How you you not love this gorgeous card♥

2nd Rin: I know Rin hates studying but she really rocks that teacher look! 

3rd Kotori: The SSR for this set was definitely off the charts! Kotori is not only best girl but i love everything in this card, her alternative hairstyle, outfit, accessories and all the cute details♥ There is just nothing to dislike, only love

4th Maki: Another amazing card and probably the best Maki SSR so far :D

5th Nozomi: Nozo with glasses are really rare but it suits her quite well~

6th Honoka: This setting with Honoka is a really good one with how she is sitting and enjoying the view

2019 in Review

I’m seeing some peeps out and about who are doing 2019 fic round ups and stuff, so I’ll throw my hat in the ring with my own post.

First of all, I will readily admit that this year was a bit of an off year, writing-wise, for me (especially compared to 2017 and 2018).  BUT that’s okay, because I did a bunch of shit for me and myself outside of writing so I’m happy about it all the same.

I’m just gonna pull some stats from my AO3.

This year I published 123352 words.  I say published, cause y’all know that you write a lot more words than actually get published, after editing and cutting and stuff.  Those words were in 67 stories.

I participated in the Destiel Harlequin Challenge again, with Switched at the Altar.  It’s got the most kudos and second most hits of all my fic this year.  I greatly enjoyed working on that with @bees0are0awesome​, cause if she and I hadn’t batted the idea back and forth the story would have been way not as good.

Two Plus Two Equals Three was my 25-chapter Wincestiel Kink Bingo fill for the year.  Actually I ended up filling over 50 bingo squares with the story.  It gets first place for the most hits.

Speaking of bingos, I blacked out 8 bingos in 2019 (currently have 10 more that I’m working). 

I also modded 13 challenges, 8 Discord servers, and made over a thousand bingo cards.  

I stopped reading/writing reader inserts and focused on ships, which has totally changed my view on fandom.  I also wrote a lot more fluff this year than previous years, don’t know what that says but it’s fact.

What's new in tabletop gaming (Indie edition)

Recently, I've found myself playing more games from small, independent game companies and those sold directly from the designers. Here are a few of these offerings currently on my radar, at my painting station, and on my tabletop. If you're looking for game-related gifts for the holidays, consider supporting these talented and hardworking indie creators.

Relicblade: Adventure Battle Game Metal King Studios, $30 (basic hardbound rulebook), 2-4 players, Ages: 10+

Sean Sutter, the mastermind behind Relicblade, was kind enough to send me some of his Relicblade merch earlier this year. Throughout the year, I watched my tabletop gaming friends enthusiastically flinging themselves down the Relicbalde rabbit hole, but I only recently got around to my own swan-dive into these realms. I love games that are largely the vision of a single designer/artist. Kingdom Death Monster always comes to mind. Like that uncompromising vision of a game as a creative platform for an artist's self-expression (Adam Poots in its case), Relicblade is a gaming universe populated by the imagination of artist and designer Sean Sutter. Sean designs the game, does all of the artwork and book design, digitally sculpts the figures--all of it. He also produces videos that chronicle his design and manufacturing process. Looking at his product line, you'd be hard pressed to distinguish Sean's output from any major game publisher. Our modern world of on-demand publishing, small scale manufacturing, digital design and sculpting, 3D printing, and crowdfunding has created the near-ideal conditions for creators like Sean to be able to compete with much larger commercial concerns. Similar things could be said of all of the designers and games featured in this article.

Relicblade is not unlike Frostgrave. It is a narrative fantasy skirmish wargame where you field a warband of five miniatures (in Frostgrave, it's ten). The game is played on a 2' x 2' table of scenery and games play very quickly and brutally. There are two main factions, the Advocates and the Adversaries, and numerous subfactions for each. On the path of the Advocate you will find knights, rangers, elves, gnomes, clerics, and thieves. The Adversaries include pig men, Golem-esque bone constructs, lizard men, and Eldritch creatures from the black lagoon (Apostles of the Deep). Like Frostgrave, the goal of the game is to collect treasure tokens (here known as relic tokens) while fending off the other player(s). There is magic in Relicblade, but more of the emphasis is on weapons combat. I honestly prefer sorcery over sword, so Frostgrave will always have a special place in my Bag of Holding, but the beauty, richness, and perfectionism of Relicblade, along with game design aspects I really like (such as being character card- and upgrade card-based), make Relicblade a new favorite.

Sean is now taking pre-orders on the 2nd edition of The Seeker's Handbook (the basic rulebook). He has also just created an official Relicblade Tabletop Simulator mod on Steam. Armed with only the rulebook, you can now play this fun fantasy skirmisher with far-flung friends over the Internet.

Lizzo- Juice Lizzo burst into 2019 with a hit song, huge album and wildly successful tour. The “pudding in the proof “. Easily the catchiest tune of the year with an irresistible Bruno Mars 80′s funk vibe, She has the kind of star power and charisma that makes her appealing to just about everyone, including your aunt, who no doubt will be grooving to this on bar mitzvah dance floors for years to come. Blame it on her juice.

Jen Awad- Hungover

Big voiced, post Amy Winehouse soul singer blames it on the juice too. Maybe she was with Lizzo the night before?

Charley Crockett- How Low Can You Go?

Multi ethnic Americana singer/songwriter delivers one of my favorite albums of the year where he effortlessly moves from country to blues to soul. He also recorded one of my favorite country covers of the year (see bottom of this blog for more info on that). His girl is breaking his heart (blame it on the juice again?) on this R&B styled song from a non album single.

Durand Jones and The Indications-  Circles

More sweet 70′s soul, quiet storm style. The swirling strings and Delfonics harmonies would sound perfect coming out of the 8 Track player in your Pinto.

Dr.John- Such A Night (1941-2019)

A true music renaissance man. Starting as a teen in the studios of New Orleans, he learned his trade at the feet of the masters, playing R&B, jazz, and blues with equal skill and feel. The good doctor, (AKA Mac Rebbenack) went on to become an unlikely rock star in the early 70′s with his psychedelic and voodoo inspired Night Tripper alter ego. His long career found him playing several roles along the way, session man, producer, and The Big Easy’s unofficial funk ambassador. I picked this live version of the song because: A. He’s backed beautifully by The Band, B. It’s one of my favorite performances from The Last Waltz, and C. The live setting let’s you hear him stretch out a bit on the keyboards. I watched him perform many times, headlining or sitting in with others at Jazz Fest. No matter what the setting, he always fit right in and found the groove. Piano man, sideman, shaman, there was only one Dr.John.

Van Morrison - Early Days

Like Dr. John, Van’s been around long enough to recall the birth of rock and roll. Throughout his career he never stopped paying tribute to his roots and those who inspired him. You can hear it in his musical references, cover tunes and name checks. At The Hollywood Bowl in October I got to see an unusually joyous performance as he wistfully traced a lifetime of musical influences across R&B, jazz and blues. His latest release is an unabashed love letter to those good old days, three chords and the truth.

Spiral Stairs- Fingerprintz

Scott Kannberg is one of the co-founders of Indie rock legends Pavement. But truth is I never took much of an interest in them. I happened to read about his solo project where he mentioned listening to a lot of  Van Morrison and Nick Lowe while recording. That seemed like a  good enough reason for me to check it out. There are familiar ‘fingerprints” on this one, as you can definitely hear him channeling Van.

Vampire Weekend- This Life

Hardly anyone is ambivalent about Vampire Weekend. Their preppy east coast look, and sleeve wearing, dad rock influences make them polarizing at best. Doesn’t matter to me, I like their catchy hooks, bone dry lyrics, caribbean rhythms, and ringing guitars.This is easily the sunniest song about cheating I ever heard.

The English Beat- Whine and Grind/Stand Down Margaret Ranking Roger (1953-2019)

in January of 1980 England was in the grips of 2 Tone mania, the pop music movement that came dancehall crashing out of the UK Midlands, and for a brief black and white checkered moment, dominated the British charts. At the center of the scene were The Specials whose founder Jerry Dammers launched the 2 Tone label and created the blueprint for it’s sound, inspired by the Jamaican music he heard as a kid. These bands (including The Selecter and Madness), combined ska, reggae and punk that launched a brief music and fashion movement. They dressed in a mod black and white style making the look nearly as important as their sound. For most of these bi-racial bands, the goal was to make you dance AND think, with lyrics focusing on social and political issues affecting young people in Thatcher’s Britain. The track here is a good example of that.

I arrived in London on a traveling seminar ready to check it all out, as a college radio DJ I was already a fan of The Clash’s punky reggae. and I had read several dispatches from the British music tabloids like NME and Melody Maker. First chance I got, I was off to a record store where I stood at a listening station to hear The Special’s debut LP.  I was instantly transformed into a card carrying 2 Tone fan boy. As a student, without much money with a long trip ahead, I couldn't afford The Specials album, but I did buy a 45 by the label’s latest signing, The Beat.

The A side was a cover of Smokey Robinson & The Miracle’s “Tears Of A Clown”. It took a minute to get used to hearing the Motown classic played in their energetic ska sound. The tune ends with Ranking Roger “toasting” over the track reggae DJ style, not something heard much outside of Jamaica back then. Side B featured Roger taking lead and riding over a bouncy stop and start rhythm titled “Ranking Full Stop”. It was an instant 2 Tone classic, and I now had a new favorite band.

The Beat (AKA The English Beat) after just one 2 Tone single, were given their own Go-Feet label and releasing a full length album later that year. Their songs seemed to have a slightly more authentic Jamaican sound than the others, dubbier, upbeat and fun. In addition they dabbled in world music and afropop long before it became chic. I saw them perform on their first US tour in Boston later that year.

As the 2 Tone moment waned back home, the group quickly focused on the American audience, touring constantly in the process. The Beat were definitely the band most committed to breaking in the states and nearly did. By the third album, they gained some traction at US radio (particularly here in LA at KROQ) and played the US Festival, but it was too late. The band was already fracturing. Lead singer Dave Wakeling and Roger left unceremoniously in 1983 to form the short lived and mildly successful General Public, while bandmates Andy Cox and David Steele formed the much more successful Fine Young Cannibals. despite some huge hits, they too were short lived.

The original band never reunited. Roger and Wakeling performed together as The Beat for awhile, later each forming his own version. Roger in the UK and Dave in the US. Dave’s version tours constantly to this day. The 2 Tone label didn't last long and the music never truly caught on here. Ultimately suffering the same fate as other short lived UK music fads like Glam Rock or The New Romatics. Their impact was strong enough though to fuel the much maligned ska third wave of the 90′s, and bring Jamaican music a bit farther into the mainstream. All that really remains are the three great studio albums and the memory of their exciting live shows.

I booked the band on a CNN talk show in 1982. I remember they seemed frustrated and were already hinting at a challenged future for the group. Less than a year later they were done for good. I recall desperately wanting them to succeed, bringing my favorite band and the 2 Tone music to the masses. It’s hard to imagine there was a ever a time in your life when a pop group could break your heart like that. 

Foe me and other recovering rude boys/rude girls, the music endures, as does the message.  And today when I hear them streaming into my ear buds, I still want to “move my likkle feet and dance to the beat”, which for the dearly departed Roger I have to think, was always the point.  #loveandunity

The Special- Vote For Me

Politics and social issues remain front and center as the 2 Tone founders return with their first album since the 80′s. Reunited for many years now, this current version of the band boasts more original members of The Fun Boy Three than the original The Specials. That did not stop them from delivering a totally respectable and relevant effort. You can hear dark echos of their classic "Ghost Town” on this dubby tune no doubt inspired by Brexit.

Eddie And The Hot Rods- Do Anything You Wanna Do Barrie Masters (1956-2019)

in 1976/77 Eddie and the Hot Rods stood at the intersection of pub rock and punk as one scene fizzled, and the other burned down everything in its path. The Hot Rods had the classic straight ahead sound of the pub bands plus an attitude that leaned forward into the energy punk would embrace. They enjoyed a brief moment of UK chart success before literally falling into the cracks of the pop music scene. This song, one of my all time favorite singles, sum them up perfectly. Drawing a straight line from Graham Parker to The Clash with a touch of a classic Springsteen working class anthem. In other words....perfect.

Beach Slang- Tommy In The 80′s

When I first saw the title of this song immediately assumed it was a Beach Slang’s tribute to The  Replacements guitarist Tommy Stinson . And even though Tommy himself plays on the track, it is not about him! In fact, it’s actually a tribute to obscure 80′s power popper Tommy Keene. I remembered the name from my MTV days, but honestly had to wiki him for clarification. Despite all these references, the whole thing sounds more inspired by “Jessie’s Girl” than either Tommy. 

The Cars- My Best Friends Girl Ric Ocasek (1941-2019)

Truthfully. I was never a big Cars fan. But in my college days before digital music, you listened to whatever the radio played. And in Boston, they played The Cars a lot. It wasn’t long before they rose from local heroes to national charts toppers. They didn't have the bluesy street cred or swagger of hometown legends Aerosmith or The J Geils Band, but they were our very own neighborhood rock stars. Drummer David Robinson lived in the building next door to Noreen on Comm Ave, and it was always kinda cool to see them strolling around Back Bay or hanging out at a club. Their sound was little cold and metallic for me, but you couldn't deny they crafted pretty great pop and new wave singles. They were omnipresent sound of my college days. The hits literally followed me to MTV and NYC in the 80′s where I often spotted Ric and Paulina strolling hand in hand in Chelsea. This classic love triangle was always my favorite with it’s Tommy James like guitar at the top, handclaps, and unforgettable hook. The band disbanded long ago, but like the classic American automobiles, these songs were built to last.

The Neighborhoods- Don’t Look Down

The Cars were the only Boston group of the era to truly make it big, but that late 70′s scene boasted several other talented bands who scored label deals including: The Nervous Eaters, The Rings, The Paley Brothers, Robin Lane and the Chartbusters, The Fools, The Real Kids, The Stompers, and Mission Of Burma. Later on, The Lyres, The Neats The Del Fuegos, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Murphy’s Law  all managed to find the big time. It was a great time for local music back then. A city filled with students, plenty of clubs to pack on weekends, and college and commercial radio stations willing to play local bands. There were many good acts around town then, and my favorite, without a doubt, were The Neighborhoods. A young, brash power trio led by charismatic lead singer David Minehan. They played a ferocious brand of power pop/punk that would leave their audience breathless. I was certain they were destined for stardom. In the spring of 1979 they released their debut single “Prettiest Girl” on a local label and massive airplay on both college and commercial radio followed. They instantly became the hottest band in town, poised to become the next band from Boston to make it big. But it never happened. Bad luck, poor management and infighting derailed all the momentum. Before you knew it, the gritty street quality that was The ‘Hoods trademark was pushed aside by the synthesized sound of MTV. Over the course of the 80′s and into the 90′s they managed to release some pretty good albums on a variety of indie labels, but it never came together for them. The band reunited and gigs occasionally but hadn’t recorded for many years until right now. Forty years later, the neighborhood may not look the same, but their sound and spirit somehow survive. I suppose there’s something tragic and romantic about a great band lost to time, remembered only by the few who saw them way back when. They really were great, but I guess you had to be there.

Jesse Mailn - Meet Me At The End Of The World Again

New York’s favorite son, soul survivor, and street poet Jesse Malin is back. He’s been around long enough to understand that “When it all blows up, when it all goes down, when it makes you sick, but you’re still around” is victory in itself.  It’s the only life he knows, so what can a poor boy do? 

Brittany Howard- Stay High

This is from Alabama Shakes lead singer's excellent solo debut, unselfconsciously celebrating private moments spent with a lover on this  rootsy and gentle ballad. Her soulful falsetto conveys the kind of lustful bliss you might expect from Al Green or Prince. 

Mississippi All Stars- Mean Old World

Bear with me. This one is tangled up in the roots of several southern rock legacies and is going to take a minute to unpack. The All Stars are led by Luther and Cody Dickinson, sons of legendary Memphis musician and wild man Jim Dickinson. They decided to cover T Bone Walker’s Mean Old World,  a blues number once recorded by Eric Clapton and Duane Allman as part of the historic Derek And The Dominos sessions. The track, featuring their dad Jim, did not make the original release but was later unearthed on an expanded reissue. Still with me?  So, as a bit of a tribute, the guys recorded their own version of the tune and invited Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts to record an Eat a Peach inspired guitar run at the end.

And oh yeah, Jason Isbell is on it as well.

Samantha Fish- Kill Or Be Kind

Have seen Samantha live several times over the past few years. She’s a very good blues/rock guitarist, vocalist and an exciting live performer. On the sultry “Kill or be Kind” she gives her lover an ultimatum. Fun fact: One of my son’s best friends from high school (Kate Pearlman) wrote two tracks on the album!

Jade Jackson- Bottle It Up

Second album from this promising up and coming alt country artist. She’s on the super cool Anti label which providing immediate credibility and her albums are produced by Social D frontman Mike Ness. And when she’s not on the road she waitress’s at her parent’s restaurant in central California. I’m not sure you can get any more country than that.

The Highwomen- Redesigninig Women

Inspired by The Highwaymen of Willie, Waylon, Johnny and Kris, this all female country “supergroup” quartet is out to break the stereotypes in country music with some really fine songs. While the male Highwaymen banded together to rescue careers in decline, these women (Brandi Carlisle, Amanda Shires, Marren Morris, and Natalie Hemby), are all on the rise. This song is lot of fun.

John Prine- Unwed Fathers

John Prine is back with a remake of his heartbreaking tale of teenage pregnancy. He’s joined this time Margo Price. I got to see Prine live this fall at the beautiful Anson Ford Amphitheater here in LA. His simple, plain spoken lyrics and songs are timeless. I attended the show with my pal David Kissinger who observed that despite health issues, “Prine remains an national songwriting treasure and his performance was as life affirming as you’ll ever see.” Can’t say it any better than that.

Shovels And Rope- Mississippi “Nuthin

Ever wonder whatever happened to that perfect couple from high school? You know, the high school quarterback and the prom queen? This one ain’t “Glory Days”. Our QB peaked in high school and never makes it back to the end zone again, plus he's tortured by the success his old flame enjoys. His anguish and desperation are palpable in this barn burner of a song whose vocals draw inspiration from June & Johnny and John & Exene.

The Delines- Eddie and Polly

Eddie and Polly are young and in love, and doomed. Vocalist Amy Boone’s world weary vocals always sound like it’s 3AM. This one won’t do much for your holiday spirit, but it’s haunting melody might stay with you throughout it.

Yola - Love all Night (Work All Day)

Love the one your with is (at least after work) is the basic idea on this track from this UK performer’s debut long player. Produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, the collection is full of excellent retro soul-folk. There was a fair amount of buzz in front of the release and she more than lives up to it including a nomination for a Best New Artist Grammy. 

Mavis Staples + Norah Jones- I’ll Be Gone

First recorded effort form this duo. A bittersweet ballad that softly and soulfully looks ahead to a final salvation. But Mavis ain’t done yet. She’s still going strong, recording and touring constantly. She knows she may be running out of time, but there’s still work to do. And whenever she’s finally ready, you can be sure she’ll take us there.
