Mistinguett (1929)
...He’s so under my skin, It’s driving me mad As soon as he approaches, It’s finished, I am his...
Jeanne Florentine Bourgeois tried out a selection of stage names - Miss Hélyett, Miss Tinguette and Mistinguette - before settling on Mistinguett.
The aspiring star, who was born in the Parisian suburbs in 1873, had started singing in public to help her sell flowers as a young girl. When she was 10 years old, she was working as a stagehand in the Casino de Paris music hall. Over the next eight years, the one-time flower seller worked her way to the front of the curtain.
Mistinguett couldn't sing that well but made up for it with flamboyant, comic and increasingly risqué performances. The formula clicked, expanding her fame over time to take her to both North and South America, becoming the highest-paid female entertainer in the world.
Billed as the Queen of the Music Hall, Mistinguett appeared in her first film, L’Empreinte ou la Main Rouge (Incriminating Evidence), in 1908. She recorded her first song, Mon Homme (My Man, soon to become a jazz and pop standard) in 1916.

Born 150 Years Today: Mistinguett, Queen of the Music Hall
Born 150 years ago today, French chanteuse Mistinguett (Jeanne Florentine Bourgeois, 1873-1956). The daughter of Paris laborers, Mistinguett (originally Miss Tinguette) initially sang while selling flowers in restaurants. She took lessons in voice, acting and music, and never grew to be a great singer so she focused on having an entertaining (and sexy) personality. She debuted at the Casino de…
