oh i remember the day that cartoon got published in toi. since the project was so spread out it eventually faded out of younger me's mind but that cartoon was so fucking funny also i got a little sad that nyt had previously published that kinda thing 3 years before

also 'mangal' is the name for mars in hindi and 'yaan' just means a vehicle

if you ever want to know about this more theres a really amazing movie called 'mission mangal' and its literally one of my most favourite bollywoood movies ever the actors are all really amazing and imo they do a good job of showing all the different tech involved in making the mission so successful and cost effective in a really easy to understand way

Hey remember when US and Russia was all like “We’re the best!!! We’ve won the space race!!!!” But India sent a kick-ass space probe to Mars and the whole mission was fuel efficient, costed less and a roaring success in the first try and then they were like “…..wait no that can’t be true” and still have the audacity to call us “underdeveloped” or only view us as a ‘third world country’? :)

Bollywood Movies Part CXCII

After a failed launch of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar) is moved to the Mars Orbiter Mission, a project that is currently dead in the water. Tara Shinde (Vidya Balan) joins him as project manager, partially due to feeling guilty for the failed launch. They form a team to make a satellite lightweight enough to go on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and to calculate the precise fuel needs to get the satellite all the way to Mars.

Mission Mangal is a great fictionalized account of the Mars Orbiter Mission that does a good job explaining the problems faced by the team without getting too technical. I also enjoyed that the film was not just about the mission and showed the lives of the various team members (except for Dhawan) outside of the mission. All of the actors performed their roles well. Favorite songs are Dil Mein Mars Hai and Shaabaashiyaan. Neither song has subtitles.

Rony (Prithviraj Sukumaran) works for a catering company and comes in conflict with Gemma (Madonna Sebastian) who he initially believes is a party crasher, but turns out to be the groom’s daughter. Later, he is tasked with taking Chandy (Vijayaraghavan) to a hotel, but ends up caught up in Chandy’s many antics as his stay extends due to injury. Meanwhile, Shiva (Prasanna) honeytraps people to blackmail them. 

TW for movie: rape, attempted rape of a child, animal abuse. Brother’s Day has a promising start but completely loses everything in the second half. I think my first clue that it wasn’t going to be good was when they pixelated the wound when young Shiva kills his father. If you have to pixelate something to make it past the ratings board as a family friendly movie, maybe you should show it differently. Unfortunately, this also not the only time they use pixelation in the movie and the second time is much worse. If Shiva could have stayed a honeytrapper, perhaps the movie would have been better, but they had to make him the most villainous villain ever. Also, the movie sets up for a Rony/Gemma romance, but it never follows through. Favorite songs are Nenjodu Vinaa (audio only) and Oru Thooval. Neither song has subtitles.

Zoya (Sonam K Ahuja), born on the day India won the World Cup for cricket, is her brother’s (Sikander Kher) lucky charm for his amateur cricket games, even though she doesn’t like cricket. Her job at an ad agency sends her to Sri Lanka to work with the Indian Cricket team, where she meets Nikhil Khoda (Dulquer Salmaan), the reclusive team captain. When Zoya tells the team about her use as a lucky charm, some of the team members decide she really is lucky for them, although Nikhil refuses to be so superstitious. The former team captain Robin (Angad Bedi) tries to get Zoya to be the official team lucky charm in a play to win back the captaincy.

The Zoya Factor is a great romance that is very good at being silly, but also gets serious when necessary. It also manages to show how headology and hard work pay off. I absolutely enjoyed how the film really leaned into the product placement because of how it plays into Zoya’s career and because they really play with it. Overall, a wonderful film that nearly killed me with cuteness. Also the actors are all great. Favorite songs are Kaash, Maheroo, and Pepsi Ki Kasam. None of the songs have subtitles.

SO MUCH dr. strange weird orange streams of light, which is just like. overdone. at this point.

Also, like, Ranbir Kapoor as the hero for this series is missing the mark by a fucking MILE! What everyone forgets is that RDJ pinned down the emotional mood and catharsis of the mcu phase 1-3 in a way that Ranbir can literally never manage. Dude tried to be emotional and deep and all that in ae dil hai mushkil and failed SO fucking badly it made me want to cry in the theater. He’s literally the definition of a romcom actor, and pinning the first movie in the entire franchise is A Bad Decision for anyone that wants there to be, yk, cohesion and depth to the acting, but that’s totes not what we’re going to be going into this movie for, so.....................

But then there's the fact that... I have faith in Karan Johar to weave a narrative? Raazi could have been SUCH a shitshow. Mission Mangal-- a movie for which I had so many higher hopes-- and even 83!!!--produced such jingiostic themes that I couldn't really enjoy any of it. But Raazi (while certainly not like... NOT nationalistic propaganda or whatever) does a decent amount of work in talking about the personal costs of patriotism by focusing on the individual-- which, yk, Karan's incredibly good at not losing vision of. So that's one good thing.

I also just. flat-out. adore. elemental magic. Fire/wind/water magic?? FUCK yeah that's good shit. The idea of astras and a secret society dedicated to protecting/using/preserving/destroying them is, undeniably, an amazing story. It's AtLA but modern. I love it.

Honestly, Hinduism has not been bastardized and shredded into pieces in avenues reachable for a less scholarly audience. Like, the debates and arguments about what it means to be a Hindu/to believe in that mythology/to learn that mythology are so so so locked away in a white tower that so few people ever actually get to access....... this is a good method by which to like.... desanctify that. Not that I’m depending on this movie to help in de-doctrinating Hindu fanatics, but it’s a step forward in the process of just fucking tearing the religion to shreds and questioning all of it: which can only be a good thing.

And there’s a lot of money being pumped into it??? Ig?? So the cgi (which, already, Too Much, but whatevs) is going to be nice to see.

Honestly my main problem with it is a) what it’s going to do to Indian cinema (which has already been fucked for a while, but this is a team-up of three studios, has a Marvel-level ensemble cast already, and promises to be a franchise, so.... indie films and even non-Hindi films are probs gonna be even worse off than they already are), b) the saturation of mediocre formulaic storylines in favor of appealing to the largest possible audience (like. say whatever you want about srk’s filmography, but it’s fucking varied) and c) the actual plot of this movie seems a bit crap, tbh (the trailer gives away WAY too much info, and Mouni Roy’s character is SO the generic female villain who wants power and doesn’t believe anyone telling her not to be prideful and reach too far aim too high etc etc etc, and FINALLY ofc there’s the fact that they chose to make him a DJ, which is not, yk, a bad decision (#NotAllDJs) but also I dated a DJ once and he was the worst fucking boyfriend I ever had so I just have a gut visceral dislike of DJs).

5.  Uri : The Surgical Strikes - I just love the film. It’s amazing. Keeps me at the edge of the seat even when I’m watching it for like the 10th time.

6. Mission Mangal - I. Just. Love. It. It’s a documentary of one of the most important breakthroughs of India in the space frontier. And it’s my inspiration for my ambition of being an aeronautical engineer at ISRO.

Tamil : 

7. Nanban : It’s a Tamil adaptation of the Hindi film 3 Idiots and I can’t get over it. I just can’t. It’s hilarious and dramatic at the same time.

A songwriter and music composer, Anand wrote his first song in Hindi called “Hey Ram” after the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai - a song about communal and religious hatred. Sparked by this he continued writing songs and started ABC as a solo project which quickly turned into a multi-membered band. They have produced two widely-received original albums: Samsara and Excuse Me. Anand Bhaskar has also worked on several projects in the Indian film industry, with his music in several Hindi and Malayalam movies and shows, including Mission Mangal, Baaghi 2 and the TV series Mirzapur. He is also the voice behind some of the biggest TV commercials and has sung the official anthem for Rajasthan Royals in 2019.
