The First Lady of WCW: All About Missy Hyatt And How She Paved The Way For Women In Wrestling

Hi Everyone! I wanted to write an article about a woman who made a large contribution to the wrestling business. This article is going to be about the one and only , Missy Hyatt.

Missy Hyatt is a wrestling manager/valet , model , commentator, and a wrestler on occasion. Missy has made appearances in the WWF , WCCW , Impact Wrestling ( TNA) , Universal Wrestling Federation ( UWF ) , and ECW. However , she is mainly known for her time in World Championship Wrestling ( WCW) during the late 80s and early 90s. Missy’s career in the wrestling business started as a manager for her boyfriend at the time , John Tatum, in WCCW. She would have rivalries with other valets such as Sunshine in WCCW , Dark Journey in the UWF, and Robin Green ( Woman/Nancy Benoit ) in WCW. While in WWF, Vince McMahon wanted her to have her own segment , ‘ Missy ’s Manor ’ , to replace the popular segment , ‘ Piper’s Pit ’, which was hosted by Rowdy Roddy Piper , who left the WWF to focus on his acting career. The segment was considered a flop even after having the major stars of the company such as Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth on it . In WCW, she would become a manager and a commentator and the host of ‘WCW Main Event’ in 1990. However , she would start a rivalry with Paul E Dangerously ( Paul Heyman ) in 1991. Their rivalry would include an arm wrestling match and Hyatt stepping into the squared circle. She would also have a rivalry with Madusa ( Alundra Blayze ) over who was the real ‘ First Lady of WCW ’ in 1992.

Hyatt would win a Bikini Showdown over Madusa at WCW’s ‘Beach Blast’ Pay Per View . She would become the valet for The Bushwhackers for their match against The Thunderfoots in the IWA. She was still with WCW at the time.

In 1993 , Hyatt took on the role as a manager for The Barbarian for a short time and tried to take on Ric Flair as one of her clients on ‘ WCW Saturday Night ’. She would begin managing the Nasty Boys at the ’ Fall Brawl ’ Pay Per View the same year . Missy would make her final WCW appearance in 1994.

Missy Hyatt would make her ECW debut in 1995 cutting a promo. In her promo , she would be making fun of the ECW fans. Stevie Richards who was planted in the crowd , saw Hyatt. A plant is a wrestler who is plays the role of a fan. They can be found in the front row of a wrestling show. She would reappear for the company in 1996 and offer her service as a manager to The Sandman , after declining an offer from his rival , Raven, to join his stable , Raven’s Nest. She also would have a match against Raven and Lori Fullington ( the wife of The Sandman). Her tag team partner would be The Sandman. Hyatt was going to face Lori in a singles match at the ‘ Natural Born Killaz ’ Pay Per View , however , she was sidelined due to a broken elbow. She would make a cameo appearance for ECW in 2001.

Missy Hyatt would spend some time on the Independent Wrestling Circuit . In 2007, she would have her own interview segment, ‘ Missy’s Manor ’ , for the women’s wrestling promotion, ‘ Women Superstars Uncensored’ ( WSU). She would also manage Lance Storm in 2016. In 2021 , she would be the tag team partner for Brian Myers in Impact Wrestling’s Homecoming Tournament.

My Final Thoughts:

Missy Hyatt is a pioneer for women in wrestling. She needs to be in WWE Hall of Fame in my opinion. She proved that women can do anything in the wrestling business.

His divorce had yet to hit the news, and while you dreaded the backlash that would inevitably come from it, you knew that it was better for everyone involved. Still, dating a famous actor definitely didn’t do much to help in the anxiety department.

You finally felt like you were able to breathe when you got into a sleek black car that Daniel said was “his”, and he slid in next to you. Quickly, in short, clipped German, he said something to the driver, and he laid his hand on your thigh as the car peeled away. “I’m glad you’re here, princess,” Daniel whispered. He leaned in and kissed your cheek, and you pressed up against his chest. You could feel his heartbeat on your shoulder, and your face went hot.

“Your heart’s beating so fast,” you giggled, and Daniel gave you that award-winning smile.

“It’s ‘cause you’re here,” Daniel told you. He gently stroked your thigh with his hand as he kissed your cheek again, then he buried his nose under your ear and kissed under your jaw. “Mmm… Can’t wait to fuck you, darling.”

“Me too,” you whispered, but, before you could offer any other words, your phone buzzed in your pocket. Quickly withdrawing it, you saw an Instagram notification, telling you that a Daniel Weltz fanpage that you followed had just posted. “Oh, Jesus,” you giggled as Daniel kissed your neck again, and you opened the app to find a picture of you.

Well, you and Daniel. It was taken from across the terminal, obviously a paparazzi shot, capturing the moments where Daniel picked you up and when he kissed you. You could see his blush in the picture, and you took a vain moment to admire just how attractive of a couple you and your man were before going to the caption.

Daniel Spotting! Danny greeted an unknown girl at the Berlin Airport, and kissed her!! Apparently they seemed pretty cozy and like OMG what happened to Clara??

“What’s that?” Daniel asked, looking down at your phone, and his eyebrows furrowed and his forehead wrinkled. “Ah, shit, I didn’t think paparazzi would get me. I can have my lawyers contact whoever the fuck this and make them take it down—”

“I’m okay,” you told him. “I don’t mind it, if you don’t.”

Daniel smiled, a little satisfied grin, and he grasped your hand tightly. “I don’t mind it one bit.”

Zanele Muholi, Tate Modern

Walking into the Zanele Muholi exhibition at Tate Modern is like discovering another country.

In 2017 Muholi’s ongoing self-portrait series, Somnyama Ngonyama/Hail the Dark Lioness, was exhibited in London’s Autograph Gallery. In press reviews and posters on the tube that autumn, the images were unmissable and unmistakeable: stark black and white photographs of an impassive face crowned with Brillo pads or clothes pegs, festooned with vacuum cleaner hoses. At the time, Autograph wrote, the artist: “uses her body as a canvas to confront the politics of race and representation… Gazing defiantly at the camera, Muholi challenges the viewer’s perceptions while firmly asserting her cultural identity on her own terms: black, female, queer, African.”

Fast forward to 2020, and Tate Modern’s major Zanele Muholi exhibition. Visiting hours at the museum flicker in and out of existence as we navigate COVID lockdowns – now you can come! No, wait, sorry, you can’t. Try rebooking for a month’s time.

When I finally squeaked in, in early December, I expected more Dark Lionesses. I had a vague idea that Zanele Muholi was a bit like a South African Cindy Sherman.

I was wrong.

This exhibition shows the breadth of Muholi’s practice, of which the self-portraits are just one strand. The range and energy of the work is astounding. Especially given that in 2012 their studio was burgled and five years of work on hard drives was stolen.

Another mental adjustment: Muholi’s pronouns are they/them/theirs.

Born in Umlazi, South Africa, in 1972, at the height of Apartheid, Zanele’s father died when they were a baby and their mother, Bester, a domestic worker, had to leave her eight children for employment in a white household. Zanele was brought up by extended family. They started working as a hairdresser, then studied photography at Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg, graduating in 2003, and going on to be awarded their MFA in Documentary Media from Ryerson University in Toronto in 2009.

On returning to South Africa they started to document the lives of the LGBTQI+ community.

Aftermath (2004)

The exhibition opens with a group of deceptively gentle images. In the first, Aftermath (2004), a torso is cropped from waist to knees, hands modestly clasped in front of Jockey shorts, a huge scar running down the person’s right leg almost like a piece of body art. In another, Ordeal (2003), hands wring out a cloth in an enamel basin of water placed on a floor. A third image shows a cropped, seated figure, again waist to thighs, hands folded in their lap, plastic hospital ties around their wrists. These pictures have a softness and beauty which completely belies the fact that their subjects are all survivors of sexual violence and “corrective rape”.

As the caption to the last picture, Hate crime survivor I, Case number (2004) explains, “Corrective rape is a term used to describe a hate crime in which a person is raped because of their perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The intended consequence of such acts is to enforce heterosexuality and gender conformity.” This horrific practice is by no means unique to South Africa, but the term seems to have originated there – feminist activist Bernedette Muthien used it during an interview with Human Rights Watch in 2001 – and its effects on the community resonate throughout this exhibition.

Ordeal (2003)

They don’t, however, dominate. While the exhibition starts by showing the evils of intolerance of gender nonconformity, Muholi goes on to reclaim, elevate and celebrate that same nonconformity.

With Being (2006 – ongoing) we move on to photographs of naked bodies entwined – again tightly cropped, again soft black and white, but now without outside interference. They are sensual, personal, and owned. A series of portraits of two female lovers, Katlego Mashiloane and Nosipho Lavuta (2007) switches to colour and full figures. The couple sit entwined, laughing: they kiss, and bathe side by side standing in an enamel basin, in a warm, defiant echo of the scene in Ordeal (2003) across the room.

The series Brave Beauties, started in 2014, is “a series of portraits of trans women, gender non-conforming and non-binary people. Many of them are also beauty pageant contestants.” The queer beauty pageant is many things: a celebration – and redefinition – of beauty, a declaration of independence by contestants, a challenge to “heteronormative and white supremacist cultures,” and an attempt, as Muholi puts it, “to change mind-sets in the communities [the contestants] live in, the same communities where they are most likely to be harassed or worse.”

These portraits are made collaboratively, Muholi and the subjects choosing clothing, location and poses together. Some of them, like the picture of Roxy Msizi Dlamini (2018) have the quality of a classic glamorous studio shot. Others, like Akeeleh Gwala, Durban (2020), posing in a bikini against a scruffy brick wall in what seems to be a deserted brick alleyway, are a reminder of the vulnerability of the subject. Akeelah Gwala’s “Testimony” in the exhibition catalogue says: “I am 24 years old. I am a transgender woman. Growing up was very difficult because your parents think this is a boy… I was raped when I was 16 years old…” The rapist, a well-known pastor, threatened Akeelah’s family, forcing them out of their home. Akeelah refers to Muholi as “Sir Muholi” and says, “I have taken part in several beauty pageants. I perform because as a Brave Beauty, it is important to be visible and make others know about us and respect us as human beings.”

The theme of beauty pageants also features in the series of self-portraits Miss Lesbian I-VII, Amsterdam (2009), where Muholi casts themself as a beauty queen, an early identification with the wider community prefiguring Brave Beauties. The 2009 series brings together several of Muholi’s themes: the beauty pageant and the fashion/fashion magazine world; who gets to perform and who gets to watch; who gets to choose what beauty means? And, as an aside that may sound trivial but isn’t, kitchen utensils as headgear.

As the exhibition unfolds, we discover other projects. Muholi describes themselves as a visual activist, and they have a large network of collaborators, including the collective Inkanyiso (“Light” or “Illuminate” in isiZulu), a non-profit organisation focused on queer visual activism. We see images documenting marches and protests, weddings and funerals, and “After Tears” – gatherings held after burials to celebrate the life of the lost loved one.

Death is a constant presence in Muholi’s community and work. The largest space in this exhibition is given to Faces and Phases (2006 – ongoing), a collection of portraits – 500, and counting. The images “celebrate, commemorate and archive the lives of Black lesbians, transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.” People appear more than once. Some spots on the walls are empty, marking a portrait yet to be taken or a participant no longer there. One wall is dedicated to those who have passed away.

Not only is this a powerful and moving project, it’s an extraordinarily beautiful set of pictures. As are the last works in the show, the series that started in 2012: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness.

In this work, Muholi has darkened their skin and whitened their eyes, and composed the picture in the manner of a classical, perfectly-lit studio portrait, posing with found objects as “costume” – a footstool as a helmet, say. There is so much to unpick in these images – references to colonialism, Apartheid, to the politics of race and representation, to femininity and “women’s work”.  Muholi presents us with a kaleidoscope of views of injustice, equal parts beautiful and brutal. The photographs were created in different parts of the world, at different times, combining what could almost be witty accessorising with intense cultural and political commentary.

The intellectual focus of every picture is slightly different. Zamile, KwaThema (2016) shows Muholi draped in a striped blanket, as used in South African prisons during Apartheid. In Quinso, The Sails, Durban (2019) Muholi’s hair is adorned with silvery Afro combs, a symbol of African and African diaspora cultural pride. In Nolwazi II, Nuoro, Italy (2015) their hair is stuffed with pens – a reference to the “pencil test” whereby, under Apartheid, if a pencil pushed into a person’s hair fell out they were “classified as white”.

As mentioned above, Muholi calls themselves a visual activist rather than an artist – though galleries, like Tate Modern, might beg to disagree. Walking through this exhibition, I came away with the impression that their work is on the intersection of art and documentary photography – but also that everything is documentary: everything is story telling, and bearing witness, and the place where “documenting the community” and “expressing oneself as an artist” is continually blurred.

Maybe it’s not just like discovering a new country: maybe Zanele Muholi is showing us a whole new world.

I Know the Secret to the Quiet Mind. I Wish I’d Never Learned It.

Of all the injuries we suffered, mine is the worst. My brain injury has shaken my confidence in my own personality, my own existence.

The worst things can happen on the most beautiful days. My family’s worst day was a perfect one in the summer of 2019. We picked my daughter up from camp and talked about where to go for lunch: the diner or the burger place. I don’t remember which we chose. What I do remember: being woken up, again and again, by doctors who insist on asking me the same questions—my name, where I am, what month it is—and telling me the same story, a story that I am sure is wrong.

“You were in a car accident,” they say. But this cannot be. We’re having lunch and then going on a hike. I had promised the think tank where I work that I’d call in to a 4 p.m. meeting.

“You are in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital in New Hampshire.” Another ludicrous statement. I started the day in Vermont. Surely if I had crossed the river to New Hampshire I would know it.

“What’s your name?” they ask me, and I tell them and tell them and tell them.

“Where are you?” “New Hampshire,” I say, except for one time when I say “Vermont.” “New Hampshire,” they correct, and I want to say, “Really, we are so close to the border here, can’t you just give it to me this once?”

“You were in a car accident,” they tell me again. “Your husband broke his leg and your son broke his collarbone.” These do not seem like horrible injuries, so I am waiting for the worse news, the news that my daughter is dead. She is the youngest and the smallest. She was born with albinism, and her existence has always felt improbable, and so now it must be over.

But—thank God—it’s not. “Your daughter has fractures in her spine and damage to her lower intestine from the seat belt.” They tell me that my lower intestine was also injured, and that I’ve had surgery. I lift up my hospital gown and am surprised to see an angry red line and industrial-size staples. I remember an article I’d read about seat belts not being designed for women, and I ask the doctor if he sees more women with these injuries than men. I have yet to take in the reality of what has happened to me, to my family. Instead I am thinking about writing an exposé about the sexist seat-belt industry.

They wake me up and ask me where I am and what my name is. A doctor asks me who the president is. “I don’t want to say,” I reply. He smiles. I am at Dartmouth for three days before I am transferred to the University of Vermont, where my husband and children are. The days pass like minutes, a loop of sleep interrupted by people asking me questions and telling me terrible things.

One of the things I am told is that I have a brain bleed and a traumatic brain injury. I wonder if this is why I am slurring my words, but am told that the slurring is from the anti-seizure medication I am on. This sounds good. The slurring will stop. A doctor tells me I “got my bell rung.” This is a bad analogy. Bell clappers are meant to slam against the side of the bell. The brain is not meant to slam against the side of the skull.

Of all the injuries my family is suffering from, mine is the worst. This is my totally biased opinion. My husband’s leg will take almost a year to heal. My daughter would have died if not for the surgery to repair her flayed abdomen. She is 10, and one of her friends tells her that because of the scar she will never be able to wear a bikini. She spends many days attempting to suss out whether she cares. She doesn’t yet know if she is the bikini-wearing type.

My 13-year-old son is the only one who remembers the accident. He remembers a woman in a ponytail calling 911, the smell of gasoline and burnt metal. He remembers his father yelling “Jesus Christ.” He will have to live with the memory of his sister looking at my body and asking, “Is Mama dead?”

These are terrible injuries, and yet, the other members of my family don’t walk around thinking, Am I still me? My brain injury has shaken my confidence in my own personality, my own existence. This is the worst injury.

When we leave the hospital and move into a hotel, I frequently get lost in the hallway. The first time I roll into occupational therapy with my walker, I am grateful for the obvious signage pointing me toward the check-in desk. It’s almost as though the clinic is expecting people with brain damage.

My therapist is a smiling, 40-something woman with dirty-blond hair. She reminds me of me before the accident. She asks if I am having any thinking problems or memory problems. I tell her about an incident with Parmesan cheese.

“Can you get the Parmesan?” my husband asked.

I opened the fridge and looked. I looked and looked.

“I can’t find it,” I said with a shrug.

My son opened the fridge and pulled out a block of Parmesan.

It hadn’t occurred to me that this was a brain issue. Sometimes you just can’t find the Parmesan. Right?

A test confirms that I have trouble scanning a visual field for objects. My brain is struggling to recognize what I see, but without a pre-accident baseline to judge from, there is no way to know how much worse I am at it now. Have I always been bad at finding things? Maybe? There are limits to how well an injured brain can scrutinize an injured brain.

I have other visual-processing issues. At first I can’t watch television because my brain is unable to merge the images from my two eyes, so I see doubles of everything—two Phoebes, two Chandlers. I can watch with one eye closed, but I’m distracted, seething at my brain for failing to do such a simple task.

In one session, the therapist tells me we are going to play a game. She pulls out a deck of cards and asks me to turn cards over while saying the number or the color or the suit. The game is so difficult, I want to physically remove my brain from my skull and hurl it against a wall. I will never play this game again as long as I live.

Eventually I graduate from occupational therapy. But occupational therapy isn’t about getting people back on their feet so they can return to think tanks. It is about making sure they can run errands without getting lost. I am someone who has always taken pride in my intelligence, and now I am not so smart. I am just a functional human being, according to occupational therapy.

When we go out in public as a family, we are a walking nightmare. “Wow,” a stranger says, marveling at the device that is bolted into my husband’s femur. And then my son appears with his arm in a sling, my daughter limps over in her back brace. An injured couple is potentially funny. There is nothing funny about an injured family. “What happened to you guys?”

When we tell the story, we explain that we were in no way at fault, which feels important. We wore our seat belts and drove the speed limit and the weather wasn’t bad and yet this happened to us. Someone was driving a pickup truck in the opposite direction. He was late to a job interview or to get his kid, or maybe he was just antsy. In front of him was a motorcycle slowing him down. Maybe he’d been behind that motorcycle for miles. Maybe he liked to take risks. He pulled into our lane and passed the motorcycle while going up a hill at 70 miles per hour. I don’t know who makes this kind of decision. Did he think, I can’t believe I did something this stupid? Did he also yell “Jesus Christ”?

Because we are not at fault, accident feels like the wrong word. Not just wrong, but unfair. My husband starts calling it the incident, but an incident is a small thing, not something that scars you for life. The smashing? The destruction? Newbury, after the town where it occurred? The only thing that comes close is the devastation.

The devastated me is different. My brain used to race, making lists and plans, skipping from an article I was researching to whether my kids were in appropriate after-school programs to what vacation we should take in February. Now it does none of that. There are no plans to make.

A few days after regaining consciousness, I check my Twitter feed. I have always been a news junkie. But I have missed nothing. The news seems to be not just familiar but actually repeating itself. Something bonkers happened in the White House. People are dying in a country I’ve never been to. A company did something possibly illegal. There was a house fire in the Bronx. Are these the things I used to care about?

The most interesting piece of news is the one I am experiencing. In the hospital we are waiting to make sure my daughter can poop through her reconstructed colon. This article isn’t in The New York Times.

When we return to New York I take the subway to doctor appointments. I don’t take out my phone, I just sit. My brain is quiet, which I find suspicious, but also soothing. Before the accident I went to yoga retreats and tried meditation. I said things like “I just need to unplug.” Apparently what I needed was to get hit by a truck. Perhaps I have discovered the secret to a peaceful mind, and it is traumatic brain injury. I fantasize about opening an expensive spa where busy people pay me money to whack them on the head with a baseball bat.

The day of the accident I had been working on a project to improve how homeless people are placed into shelters. I say out loud, “I don’t care about homeless people” to see how it feels. It doesn’t ring true; I do care about homeless people. I just don’t feel like working. I have always been a regular exerciser. Now I can’t imagine wanting to do a burpee, let alone 10 of them. I always ate healthy things. But did you know that you can eat whole grains and still get hit by a truck?

I have strange cravings. I think about apple cider all the time. Apple cider is not a normal part of my diet. I have a very detailed dream about eating chocolate cake. I eat the cake. That’s the entire dream. I find myself foraging in the fridge for flavors that don’t exist.

I don’t know which symptoms are permanent and which are temporary. At first, the doctors say that after a year or two I’m likely to have a full return to my normal brain function. Or not. They don’t really know about the brain. It might be more like 95 percent. If I broke my elbow and someone told me I’d get 95 percent of my elbow function back, I’d be satisfied. But 95 percent of my brain function sounds terrifying. Which pieces will be missing?

Some days I feel like myself. Other days all I can think about is the old life that is gone. Then, halfway through my recuperation, the coronavirus comes. The stores close, the schools close, the traffic on the avenue dwindles to a sporadic whoosh. And my busy friends who were always texting me about their crazy schedules are suddenly as quiet as I am. Together we wait for normal to return. The difference is that they know what normal looks like.

In July it will be two years since the accident. The world is now coming back to life, my days slowly filling up with work and chores and exercise. Soon I will go back to in-person meetings and travel, and I wonder: Will I be up to the challenge? Or will I get lost in office buildings and airports?

For now, in this liminal space between the old life and the new one, I often catch myself staring at my children. They have never been more beautiful. I chalk this up to the magic of braces––their teeth are finally coming into alignment––but I know this is ridiculous. They are beautiful because they are alive. I look at them, and I sit with the silence. Today, it is mine. Tomorrow, it may not be.

Counterfactuals

As a writer, I read voraciously. Anyone who claims to be a writer but reads little is delusional. Each journey through another person’s mind is a data point that increases our knowledge. Failing to keep up with new ideas invites trouble. For example, a woman on Facebook referred to the “whisker biscuit” of a bikini-clad woman, recently.  In my world, a whisker biscuit is “an arrow rest with synthetic bristles and a hole in the centre, to completely encircle and hold the arrow shaft in perfect alignment…”   I go no further with this definition because the parallels between female anatomy and an archery whisker biscuit may get me banned from social media. Readers catch my drift.  Keeping up with changing metaphors is important. Social media comments can be insightful, but they aren’t my primary source for information.  Science articles intrigue me the most.  Recently, I stumbled across an essay that contained an idea that gave me pause. The author, Chiara Marletto, a theoretical physicist at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, contrasted the world of science with the science of possibility, otherwise known as counterfactuals. (“Our Little Life is Rounded with Possibility,” by Chiara Marletto, Nautilus, Issue 38, pgs. 90-97.)  Her description of the latter comes close to what I call imagination, with one exception. Counterfactuals must obey the laws of nature.  Witches on flying broomsticks aren’t permitted. Barring that restriction, human inventions that work are counterfactuals. Marletto explains.  The laws of science are limited to the quantum world, meaning they govern quarks, electrons, and other fundamental particles. Like a leggo brick, these entities are irreducible but can link to one another to form disparate objects. The universe for example.  In turn, the universe obeys the rules that govern its parts. Because humans have learned how the basic structure works, they can invent objects that aren’t in the world by nature’s design.  The wheel is an example  The caveat for these inventions, as I’ve said, is that they must obey nature’s laws.   Oddly enough, once a counterfactual becomes real, it becomes impermanent, meaning it’s subject to change. It can expand or contract, erode or multiply, merge with objects larger or smaller than itself, or be destroyed. In other words, once “born” it is subject to fate. My book talk show, Just Read It is an example of a counterfactual.  Writer Susan Stoner and I created the series over 7 years ago with the help of her husband who was our cameraman. Together, we filmed YouTube programs where we talked with local writers about New York Times bestsellers.      We gained viewers, but fate stepped in.  Susan immersed herself in her writing and her husband wanted to travel. Rather than allow the series to fall apart, I decided to fly solo.  Luckily, I found help. Knowledgeable people with skills necessary to pull the program together pitched in.  At first, we worked in a studio that felt luxurious because it was large enough to contain two cameras, some spotlights, and cables. I felt like Oprah.   Next, the pandemic hit. Zoom, a new child of technology, saved us. To our surprise, it also offered unexpected benefits. Guests were no longer obliged to travel through wind and weather to reach the studio. They no longer had to live in Portland.  These advantages stimulated the little grey cells of the crew. Why not interview best-selling authors from time to time? We began our experiment with Carola Dunn,  mystery maven of the  Daisy Dalrymple series.  Anne Hillerman followed, sharing her thoughts on her latest book, Stargazer.  Early next year, Rebecca Morris, crime writer, will join us to discuss Boy Missing, the Kyron Horman case. Just Read It began as a counterfactual. Once born, the idea grew by the law of addition. But, the science behind it doesn’t matter, I suppose. Sydney Stevens, a local historian and author of a new book, Historic Haunts of the Long Beach Peninsula, probably gave science little thought when she wrote about her guest appearance on her blog.  “It was great fun,” she quipped.  (“The nip of fall..” blog of 9/25/2021)    I agree.  It was fun. Vì sao người đẹp không còn mặn mà thi hoa hậu?

Ảnh hưởng của dịch Covid-19 cùng với sự thiếu an toàn trong khâu tổ chức đã khiến một số cuộc thi hoa hậu ngày càng giảm giá trị trong mắt công chúng.

Năm 2021, các cuộc thi hoa hậu cấp quốc tế lẫn quốc gia trở lại trong sự tẻ nhạt, ảm đạm chưa từng có. Danh xưng hoa hậu cũng không còn được xem trọng.

Cuộc thi hoa hậu trở lại rải rác

Trong Big 6 sân chơi sắc đẹp lớn nhất hành tinh (Miss Universe - Hoa hậu Hoàn vũ, Miss World - Hoa hậu Thế giới, Miss International - Hoa hậu Quốc tế, Miss Earth - Hoa hậu Trái Đất, Miss Supranational - Hoa hậu Siêu quốc gia và Miss Grand International - Hoa hậu Hòa bình Quốc tế), chỉ vài cuộc thi được diễn ra năm nay.

Ban tổ chức Miss International gần đây thông báo hủy mùa giải mới do ảnh hưởng phức tạp của dịch Covid-19. Phiên bản lần thứ 60 sẽ dời sang mùa thu năm sau, đồng nghĩa đấu trường này bị "đóng băng" 2 năm liên tiếp.

2020-2021 là giai đoạn ảm đạm chưa từng có của cuộc thi do người Nhật Bản khởi xướng. Năm nay có 41 nước xác nhận cử thí sinh đi thi, nhưng cuối cùng phải hủy bỏ.

Miss Earth - cuộc thi hoa hậu tầm cỡ duy nhất tổ chức thành công bằng hình thức trực tuyến năm 2020 - dự kiến trở lại hoành tráng. Có nguồn tin tiết lộ mùa 2021 sẽ ở Việt Nam, tuy nhiên thông tin này chưa được xác nhận.

Theo Angelopedia, Miss Universe luôn bị đặt lên bàn cân so sánh với Miss Grand International vì tiêu chí tương đồng. Hai cuộc thi tổ chức liên tục hai mùa giải trong cùng năm nay (do năm ngoái hoãn lại). Chỉ vài tháng nữa, hoa hậu mới của hai đấu trường sẽ lộ diện.

Tuy nhiên, riêng Miss Universe lần thứ 70 đang khiến khán giả lo lắng một mùa giải kém hấp dẫn vì nhiều quốc gia như Lào, Malaysia... tuyên bố không tham gia cuộc thi lần này ở Israel.

Lặng lẽ nhất trong Big 6, Miss World - cuộc thi hoa hậu lâu đời nhất - đang rục rịch chuẩn bị mùa mới, dự kiến diễn ra đến một tháng ở Puerto Rico. Vì là sân chơi sắc đẹp hiếm hoi vẫn gìn giữ tiêu chuẩn truyền thống nên Miss World thường không phải thỏi nam châm hút truyền thông.

Trong khi đó, Miss Supranational 2021 ở Ba Lan có người đẹp Chanique Rabe (đại diện Namibia) đăng quang trong sự thuyết phục của khán giả. Dẫu vậy, sau cuộc thi, cô gái này không được nhắc đến nhiều.

Đối với những đấu trường quy mô quốc gia, khâu tổ chức bị đánh giá xuống cấp trầm trọng, chất lượng thí sinh tệ và thiếu sự chăm chút ngoại hình. Các cuộc thi diễn ra nhỏ lẻ, gặp không ít hạn chế do dịch bệnh.

ABS-CBN đưa tin tối 3/10, chung kết Miss World Philippines kéo dài đến 5 tiếng. Các thí sinh lộ rõ vẻ mệt mỏi, đờ đẫn vì đứng quá lâu trên đôi giày cao gót. Người đẹp Tracy Maureen Perez đã ngã nhiều lần trước và sau khi đăng quang hoa hậu.

Hồi cuối tháng 7, Nuestra Belleza El Salvador (Hoa hậu Hoàn vũ El Salvador) ghi nhận số thí sinh thấp kỷ lục, chỉ 7 cô gái tham gia tranh tài. Khoảnh khắc đăng quang của người chiến thắng bị ví như trên sân khấu hội chợ. Hơn nữa, người trao giải cho tân hoa hậu cũng không phải hoa hậu tiền nhiệm.

Chịu chung số phận bị chê, thí sinh Miss Philippines Earth 2021 gây ngán ngẩm vì vẫn trang điểm trong vòng mặt mộc. Đến ngày thi phối trang phục với bikini, các cô gái bị chê phong cách quê mùa, sến sẩm.

Đường đua sắc đẹp cũng ghi nhận trường hợp Madeleine Overby - Hoa hậu Siêu quốc gia Mỹ - bất ngờ trả vương miện sau 2 tháng đăng quang vì chán nản. Cô đã quyết định nhường suất thi quốc tế cho á hậu 1.

Danh hiệu hoa hậu giảm sức hút

Theo Fox News, vương miện chỉ có một, nên cuộc cạnh tranh phải rất khốc liệt và tốn nhiều công sức, mồ hôi lẫn nước mắt trong các cuộc thi sắc đẹp từ năm 2010 đổ về trước.

Thế nhưng, theo thời gian, cuộc thi hoa hậu mọc lên như nấm sau mưa khiến người ta dần không quan tâm mấy đến cái mác hoa hậu (trừ một số quốc gia châu Á và Mỹ Latin).

Đó là chưa kể từ năm 2020, khi đại dịch Covid-19 bùng phát, đấu trường sắc đẹp vốn đã giảm sức hút lại càng trở nên ảm đạm.

Không thể phủ nhận Miss Grand International hồi tháng 3 được đầu tư nghiêm túc, dàn thí sinh sở hữu kỹ năng tốt. Nhưng thực sự thì, cô gái chiến thắng Abena Appiah không để lại ấn tượng tốt trên hành trình đương nhiệm. Nhiều lần, cô gây thất vọng với diện mạo xuề xòa, tăng cân.

Nếu không có gì thay đổi, Abena Appiah sẽ trao lại vương miện cho người kế nhiệm vào cuối năm nay, chỉ sau vài tháng lên ngôi. Ở Miss Universe, đương kim Hoa hậu Andrea Meza cũng có khoảng thời gian đương nhiệm ngắn ngủi tương tự.

Trái lại, Sireethorn Leearamwat đang giữ kỷ lục là hoa hậu đương nhiệm lâu nhất lịch sử Miss International. Người đẹp Thái Lan đăng quang từ năm 2019 và cho đến nay người kế nhiệm cô vẫn chưa lộ diện.

Nhận xét về hai năm qua, Leearamwat bị nhiều khán giả chê thiếu đột phá. Cô không xuất hiện nhiều và trên Instagram, Leearamwat chỉ có khoảng 190.000 người theo dõi - lượng follow khá thấp so với những hoa hậu tầm cỡ quốc tế khác.

Mùa giải gần nhất của Miss Intercontinental là năm 2019 với sự lên ngôi của Karen Gallman - đại diện Philippines. Người đẹp này không được quan tâm dù là hoa hậu.

Bên lề diễn ra các cuộc thi chính thống, Missosology và Global Beauties - hai chuyên đàn sắc đẹp uy tín hàng đầu - đã sáng tạo giải thưởng riêng để tôn vinh các thí sinh truyền cảm hứng trong năm.

Với Timeless Beauty (Tạm dịch: Vẻ đẹp vượt thời gian), Missosology bình chọn Miss Earth Lindsey Coffey thắng năm nay. Từng là cuộc đua được hưởng ứng mạnh mẽ, song giải Timeless Beauty 2021 trở nên buồn tẻ đến lạ.

Khác mùa giải trước vì một số cuộc thi đã tạm hoãn vì dịch, hành trình tìm kiếm Timeless Beauty chỉ căn cứ vào thành tích thí sinh của Miss Universe và Miss Earth (không tính kết quả của Miss Grand International). Điều này cũng giải thích lý do giải thưởng đã không còn gây hứng thú.

Khi cuộc thi biến thành ổ dịch Covid-19

"Miss Eco International nên bị khai tử" là điều khán giả nhấn mạnh khi nhắc đến cuộc thi lắm tai tiếng này. Tờ Rappler đưa tin các thí sinh thi năm nay có kết quả dương tính với nCoV nhưng bị ban tổ chức ngó lơ, phủi bỏ trách nhiệm.

Đại diện Thái Lan - Juthamas Mekseree - lên tiếng ��ầu tiên để bày tỏ sự phẫn nộ. Cô nói phải tự lo liệu cho bản thân mà hoàn toàn không nhận được một lời động viên nào từ ê-kíp Miss Eco International.

Lần lượt, giám đốc quốc gia Miss Eco International ở Thái Lan, Nhật Bản, Peru đồng loạt tẩy chay cuộc thi, và còn tuyên bố không gửi thí sinh chinh chiến những mùa sau.

Ở quy mô cấp quốc gia, Hoa hậu Mexico bị tố cáo xem thường pháp luật vì che giấu 12 thí sinh nhiễm SARS-CoV. "Họ bị ho, đau nhức cơ thể, một số còn sốt cao. Tuy nhiên ban tổ chức cấm họ phàn nàn hoặc hé lộ thông tin ra ngoài", Sky News đưa tin vào tháng 7.

Vụ việc buộc chính quyền bang Chihuahua - nơi diễn ra cuộc thi - phải vào cuộc điều tra. Nhưng điều trơ trẽn là ban tổ chức vẫn không thừa nhận trách nhiệm và vẫn cập nhật hình ảnh tân hoa hậu như chưa có chuyện gì xảy ra.

Tương tự, Bangkok Post cho hay 13 thí sinh và 9 người khác liên quan đến cuộc thi Miss Grand Samut Sakhon tổ chức ở Bangkok, Thái Lan cũng là bệnh nhân Covid-19.

Trong một tuyên bố, Pol Maj Gen Piya Tawichai - Phó ủy viên cảnh sát Bangkok - nhấn mạnh: "Những người tham gia cuộc thi không đeo khẩu trang đã vi phạm sắc lệnh khẩn cấp và luật kiểm soát dịch bệnh".

Tính đến nay, Miss Universe vẫn là đấu trường nhan sắc nhận được sự quan tâm chú ý lớn nhất từ cộng đồng fan yêu cái đẹp.

Mới đây trên trang tin sắc đẹp Word Press đã công bố 4 gương mặt ở độ tuổi 1994 cùng “chạm trán” tại Miss Universe Việt Nam nhận được sự tương tác lớn.

Đó là Lê Thảo Nhi, Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Châu , Chế Nguyễn Quỳnh Châu và Cổ Thị Kim Ngân .

Tuy nhiên, có một vấn đề lo lắng ở đây đó là nhiều khả năng cuộc thi Hoa hậu Hoàn vũ Việt Nam 2021 (MUV 2021) sẽ phải dời sang năm 2022 và có thể team 1994 sẽ không còn cơ hội tham dự. Theo quy định thì các thí sinh sẽ bị giới hạn độ tuổi là 27. Người hâm mộ các cuộc thi nhan sắc hi vọng BTC nên gia hạn độ tuổi tham dự lên 28 như Miss Universe, Miss USA hay Miss Universe Thailand… để tạo cơ hội cho các người đẹp sinh năm 1994. Và nếu cơ hội đó xảy ra, liệu ai sẽ cầm chắc phần thắng?

Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Châu

Ngọc Châu xuất hiện một cách thuyết phục trên poster giới thiệu của cuộc thi năm nay.

Sở dĩ cô là ứng cử viên nặng ký của MUV 2021 là bởi cô đã từng kinh qua rất nhiều cuộc thi nhan sắc trước đó. Người đẹp gốc Tây Ninh từng đoạt quán quân Vietnams Next Top Model 2016 và là Hoa hậu Siêu quốc gia châu Á 2019.

Thần thái cũng như khả năng tạo dáng, catwalk của Ngọc Châu không ai có thể chê nổi. Cô nàng khi đánh layout make up sắc nét lại thêm kiêu kì và sắc sảo. Dự đoán nếu được suất đi thi, người đẹp 1994 chắc chắn sẽ khiến nhiều đối thủ phải nể.

Chế Nguyễn Quỳnh Châu

Chế Nguyễn Quỳnh Châu được nhiều người biết đến khi tham gia nhiều cuộc thi như F-Idol 2013, Vietnam Fashion Icon 2014, Project Runway Vietnam 2014, Vietnams Next Top Model 2014, Hoa khôi Áo dài 2016. Tại Hoa hậu Hoàn vũ Việt Nam 2015, Quỳnh Châu cũng đã lọt vào top 15 chung cuộc.

Trưởng thành từ nhiều cuộc thi đình đám, Quỳnh Châu sắm sửa cho mình khí chất ngút ngàn qua mỗi shoot hình chụp. Phong cách thời trang của cô cũng rất gì và này nọ.

Tính từ ngày cuối cùng đi thi đến nay cũng đã nhiều năm nhưng cô nàng 9X vẫn giữ được body siêu mlem. Quỳnh Châu vẫn rất chăm chỉ tập luyện giữ gìn vóc dáng. Người hâm mộ liên tục xuýt xoa vòng eo thắt nút lọ chai và vòng 3 trái đào của cô nàng.

Cổ Thị Kim Ngân

Thông tin Cổ Ngân là ứng cử viên nặng kí cho MUV 2021 đã râm ran từ mấy tháng nay. Thời điểm cô nàng được công bố, nhiều người không khỏi thích thú.

Từng dính tới rất nhiều thị phi như chia tay người tình tỷ phú 72 tuổi đến việc bị dân tình gán ghép với biệt danh bản sao Lan Khuê, Cổ Ngân giờ đây đã khẳng định được chất riêng của mình tới người theo dõi. Cô nàng có gout thẩm mỹ rất chất chơi. Trên trang cá nhân của cô nàng thường xuyên đăng tải các concept chụp hình thời trang mà trong đó hầu hết cô tự phối đồ và tự make up, làm tóc

Cổ Ngân sở hữu thần thái “chặt chém” sắc lẹm rất hợp với các cuộc thi vươn tầm thế giới .

Body của cô cũng rất gì và này nọ. Dù thời gian giãn cách xã hội gây nhiều hạn chế cho việc tập luyện nhưng 9X vẫn giữ được độ gọn gàng của vóc dáng. Các item bikini cắt xẻ được Cổ Ngân phối và xử lý khá nhịp nhàng.

Bên dưới bài đăng của trang tin hương sắc, netizen lần lượt hô hào vote cho Cổ Ngân với niềm tin chắc chắn cô sẽ làm nên kì tích.

Lê Thảo Nhi

Nàng rich-kid nổi tiếng của làng mốt thời trang Việt là gương mặt được BTC công bố tham dự cuộc thi rất muộn. Không ai ngờ rằng có ngày Thảo Nhi đăng ký tham dự đấu trường nhan sắc vì cô nàng vốn dĩ đã quá nổi tiếng.

Cũng như Cổ Ngân, Thảo Nhi là một người có kinh nghiệm làm dẹp dày dặn. Cô nàng liên tục tương tác với người hâm mộ sau khi trở về Việt Nam với nhiều video hướng dẫn cách phối đồ và cả trang điểm. Lối trang điểm nổi tiếng của cô đậm chất Asian Baby Girl được rất nhiều cô nàng học hỏi.

Thảo Nhi cũng là cái tên gây sốt bởi xét từ gương mặt, làn da, hình thể, vốn liếng tiếng anh,… không có gì để chê. Ngoại trừ 1 điều duy nhất đó chính là chiều cao. Số đo được BTC cuộc thi công bố với 3 vòng lần lượt 88-65-92cm với chiều cao 1m68.

Bên dưới bài đăng, có không ít ý kiến gây tranh cãi cho cô nàng hotgirl gốc Hà Thành. Ngoài lo lắng vượt quá tuổi cho phép thì chiều cao cũng chính là rào cản của Thảo Nhi. Nếu thuyết phục được BTC của MUV 2021 thì cũng khó lòng giật giải được từ đấu trường quốc tế.
