this is so late... and i am so sorry...
( neels visser • 20 • male ) look, it's tyce thorsen from apartment 2A ! i heard that he is here in los angeles because they were traded to the la kings. they moved into moreau apartments one month ago and rumour has it, they can be quite insecure and closed off — good thing they’re also adaptable and easy going, hey ? i hear they’re the eeyore of the building. ( nyle, 20, est, she/them )
HISTORY
tyce thorsen was born in sunny arizona --- to watercolor sunsets and flat flat flat horizons; to the sand and the dry heat that fills your lungs too quickly; to an nhler who didn’t know how to give the ice up even in the desert, and passed that down to his sons.
arizona was not where tyce grew up, however; he grew up on the road, in the places between here and there, sometimes rooted for a year, sometimes barely a few months. NINE schools, NINE cities in eleven years is no way to raise a child, and yet tyce embraced it all --- ever willing to adapt to new surroundings from alaska to california to boston, to new weather and friends, so long as the ice in his veins was kept happy and kept happy it was. jonathan thorsen would not have anything different for his sons.
perhaps the first place that truly felt like home was ANN-ARBOR, home of the united states national development team program. in the end, he was only there for a year, though it could have easily been two if the university of connecticut hadn’t requested an acceleration of his education that he ultimately accepted. he graduated a year early and went on to play for uconn’s newly fledged team.
he finished his freshman season with 33 pts in 36 games and went on to be drafted by the st. louis blues in the 2016 NHL draft at 26th overall. he played his sophomore season, earning 33 pts in 34 games (missing two games due to playing in the world juniors championship where he won gold with team usa). the summer after, he sign his entry level contract with the blues.
( there’s this FEELING of wanting to be part of something for more than a YEAR, a fleeting moment of finding family only to be taken away from them again --- he won’t tell anyone this, but he’s tired of the ceaseless movement. and the only reason he didn’t STAY with the usntdp longer is because he didn’t want to get CLOSER with an inevitable deadline creeping up ).
as it turns out, this start he thought was coming didn’t come true. he started out in the AHL and got called up halfway through and certainly didn’t have the potential the blues were hoping to get from their first round pick. tyce wasn’t exactly happy with his own play either, but there was little he could do about it --- they weren’t letting him play his game, and in the nhl you do anything you can just to not get sent back down. he entered his first nhl off-season with the determination to get better.
the call from his agent came in mid-july ( “you’ve been traded” ). traded to the la kings along with a couple veteran players and a first round pick for the star center the blues so desperately needed to make playoffs ( and the one that tyce would certainly not become ).
it was a shock at first ---after all, st. louis was always supposed to be the end of all this ceaseless movement, but tyce was also the son of an nhler and as all who grow up with the nhl pipedream know: nothing is certain, and hockey is a business. he’s prided himself in being ADAPTABLE, after all. and more he learned, the more he thought about it and talked with the kings organization, the more he realized that this might just be the opportunity he needed. there’s something to be said about being WANTED, someone having confidence in you and big plans for the future.
and tyce moved to la with plans of giving them a reason he should STAY.
MISC
okay so i gave tyce the label of “eeyore” because i imagine he always has these big sad eyes and expression that make him look extremely down all the time ( even when he’s not ). he tends to always look like he has some emotional weight on his shoulders but when he smiles it lights up his whole face.
he is a TALL ASS BITCH. boi is 6′5″ and 202 pounds. he could stand to gain more weight in muscle and actually use his size on the ice a bit more. but he is a very tall man.
he’s a winger who can play right or left side. he was drafted as a center but that changed. call him a power forward. he has a very good shot and is a huge asset to the penalty kill (that was his dad’s specialty). despite his size, he is rather nimble on a ice and can skate extremely well.
personality-wise, he is very easy-going and nothing seems to phase him very much ( he just rather not waste the energy ). but that easiness masks a lot of insecurities, especially about his height and his play. he’s not as conscious about his height as he was ( used to be called bambi and has trouble growing into his rapidly changing body ) but it’s still a little disconcerting to look down at almost everyone.
CONNECTIONS
so tyce has only been in la for about a month, month and a half when he moved it prior to the season starting. he lives in 2A so i’m down for all the neighborly plots or the annoying resident above plots...
that being said, he’s also lived in a l o t of places so he could have met ur chara beforehand...
fans of the la kings, anybody??
uh... idk. im so bad at connections, i’m sorry but pls hmu!!

Review
It’s always a thrill to read any new book by Ms. Anderson because I know all the elements I love in romantic suspense – intrigue, danger and passion – will be on every page. COLD AS ICE does not disappoint and is every bit of a page turner as anything this author has written in the past, with the surprises coming all the way to the last page of the book.
Darby O’Roarke has lived through is a nightmare of epic proportions, but she is determined to take back control of her life and has been mostly successful so far. But someone with nefarious intentions is determined to see that she does not succeed in moving on from the events that changed her life and Darby’s first call is to the one man she cannot stop pining for.
FBI agent Eban Winters has tried for so long to do the right thing when it comes to Darby, but with danger surrounding her, he’s willing to give up the job that fulfils him if it comes to a choice between it and keeping Darby safe.
I loved this story so much and everything about the main characters. Moving on from those big events and looking to find love can be very difficult and requires a lot of support and patience, which is why I loved how Eban gave all that to Darby. He was supportive and also did not see or treat her as a victim. He was there for her every step of the way even as she made the calls on her life but was never willing to compromise on her safety in any way.
The dance between Darby and Eban about their feelings for each other was a very delicate one and I really liked how the author handled it. Any concerns I had about the Darby’s life-changing event were allayed by the thoughtful and compassionate way the author handled that piece of the story.
There is so much that will capture a reader’s attention here and really, the entire series is a must-read.

Originally from a small town in Shropshire, England, Toni studied Marine Biology at University of Liverpool (B.Sc.) and University of St. Andrews (Ph.D.) with the intention she'd never be far from the ocean. Well, that plan backfired and she ended up in the Canadian prairies with her biology professor husband, two kids, a rescue dog, and a laid-back leopard gecko.
Toni started writing while pregnant with her first child and never stopped. Her greatest achievements are mastering the Tokyo subway, climbing Ben Lomond, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, and surviving fifteen Winnipeg winters (fingers crossed). She loves to travel for research purposes and was lucky enough to visit the Strategic Information and Operations Center inside FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. in 2016. She also got to shove another (police) car off the road during pursuit training at the Writer’s Police Academy. Basically she has way too much fun!

0277: Construction Contractor Embezzlement Detective - Kelly Paxton Part 2
This Podcast Is Episode Number 0277, And It Will Be About Construction Contractor Embezzlement Detective - Kelly Paxton Part 2 of 2
Kelly Paxton specializes in finding and helping Construction Contractors, other businesses, and government agencies root out Pink-Collar Crime in their companies. The term Pink-Collar Crime was made popular Dr. Kathleen Daly in the 1980s to describe a type of embezzlement crime committed by female employees who may have limited opportunity.
It is thought women in this situation may have a history of committing low level crimes such as check kiting and bookkeeping fraud. Part of the reasoning is women tend to be in less powerful positions compared to men who had a history of engaging white-collar crime.
During our Podcast interview which you can listen to Part 1 by clicking the play button above I asked Kelly why she became interested in Pink Collar Crime.
She replied "...When I started working at the Sheriff’s Office I became intimately involved in seeing the devastation caused by small business embezzlement. What I did not know was the perpetrator committing these crimes. When I was a federal agent most of my targets were typical White Collar Criminals—in other words men.
Kelly goes on to say she was seeing women who had violated the trust of their employers. Out of all the cases she worked at the Sheriff’s Office there was only one male embezzler they came across. The rest were women, all kinds of women: old, young and middle aged. Some had gambling habits, some of them wanted to buy stuff they didn't need, with money they didn't have to impress people. They appeared to share two things in common— they had earned their supervisor's trust and they had the opportunity to embezzle.
The following is a true story from Pink-Collar-Crime Wall of Shame:
Stealing from her sister...
Another medical office embezzlement but this one is a family affair. Older sister who is a well paid ($110k per year) office manager stole from her younger sister’s medical practice. Can you imagine the Thanksgiving dinner they had? Well it probably didn’t happen. Reading the story http://bit.ly/2A53LiM is like a soap opera. At this point therapy may not help. According to the affidavit: “Additionally, airplane flights and in-flight charges were purchased using the card, along with lengthy expensive hotel stays and various vacation charges,…Also noted were charges for plastic surgery and cosmetics.“Lastly, many personal charges (were made), such as car repair, car registration, gas, music, horse boarding, various saddles and accessories for horses and other pets and miscellaneous grocery shopping, etc.” Then in 2014 she came down with an eating disorder and other health issues that prompted her to begin “binge shopping,” according to the affidavit. In addition, one of her daughters began “doing really well with horse riding,” so she began paying for those expenses with clinic credit cards. For everyone who follows me on Twitter or has seen my presentation you know #horsesareaclue. They are expensive and a pink flag. By summer 2016, Shannon Nagle said “she had ‘all sorts of justifications’ for what she was doing and was ‘angry and in denial which was a bad combo,'” the affidavit states. “She felt unappreciated at work, wasn’t getting raises while other employees were and felt that (Melinda) Nagle and (her business partner) believed she wasn’t worth her salary,” according to Fain’s affidavit. Those rationalizations are never a reason to steal but businesses need to understand that everyone rationalizes and opportunity is the only part of the #fraudtriangle you can control. The takeaway from this sad story is that trust but verify even if they are a family member. I trust my sister with my life but not every family is that lucky.

A weekend at Army-Navy, college football’s most heated, petty, loving family reunion
Perhaps no rivalry in college football is as historic and meaningful ... nor as polite.
PHILADELPHIA — Army-Navy is college football's best rivalry, because it's historic and petty and exceedingly polite.
The schools have an extraordinary history of mascot thefts. Army fans and cadets mercilessly make fun of Navy’s midshipmen for their lolly-gagging form during march-ons, when the student bodies enter the field and then go to their seats. Navy fans loved to lord their school’s 14-year winning streak over Army fans, until it ended in 2016.
How’s it feel to lose? “It’s like your puppy dying,” West Point class of 2014 grad Danny Little says. He came from Fairbanks, Alaska, for this game. For him, one of the best things about 2016’s streak-breaker win was that “Navy had never known a loss.”
But amid the schools’ desires to top each other is more mutual respect than in any other college football series. Army-Navy goes as hard as any game, but it’s really light on actual fighting — physical or verbal, in the parking lots or the stands.
The most audacious thing I heard anyone say during hours of Saturday tailgating was a Navy fan yelling “Shut up!” at a woman who’d yelled “Beat Navy!” toward his tailgate. Her response was a smiling “That’s very rude! That’s very rude!”
There are crowds where such an exchange would lead to charges of fan incest (Pitt-West Virginia or the Iron Bowl, maybe), NCAA violations (virtually any SEC game), and the like. You don’t get that at Army-Navy. You get something like this:
“There’s always a little battle of one-upsmanship, and whatever that might be,” says Larry Needle, the executive director of PHL Sports, the agency that brings the game to Philly. “If Army’s bringing in a big tank, then Navy wants to bring in their bigger ship.”
At Army-Navy, there are just two things that feel out of place: the forward pass and any serious trash talk.
James Lang-USA TODAY Sports
Philly has this down to a science now. The city has hosted 87 of the academies' 118 games against each other. Needle’s group estimates the city gets an influx of 50,000 people, who take up the majority of the nearly 70,000 seats at Lincoln Financial Field.
"They love to drink," says Jimmy Masiak, the general manager of Tavern on Broad, on Friday night, the eve of the game. "They love to drink. I think that's why they always come to Philadelphia, because we're a drinking city. And they fit right in. They were like locusts last night. They came in and just drank everything."
Masiak's bar required restocks, because an Army-Navy crowd goes through whiskey and bourbon fast; Maker's Mark and Knob Creek, largely. The people who come to town may arrive as rivals, but they're there in the same spirit.
"They're just cutting loose," says David Hall, a Navy vet whose son, Matt, used to play fullback for the Mids. "They're having a good time. They don't get that opportunity. Especially the cadets, they don't get that opportunity all the time."
Army-Navy visitors don’t amount to a full-on takeover in a city of about 1.6 million, but they give businesses a big bump from about Thursday night to Sunday. Wherever they congregate becomes a celebration of college football and common bonds.
These are often the same bars where college kids are showing up in Christmas sweaters to drink and dance to “Jenny from the Block,” while a bunch of Army parents from Massachusetts gather in a corner. Sometimes Army-Navy festivities spill out of the bars, into the streets.
An example: On Friday at 11:19 p.m., a guy sits in the passenger’s front seat of a cab at the intersection of Broad and Walnut streets, outside a Wawa. He yells to a 20-something in an Army jacket, “Nice shirt!”
The red light is just about now turning green, but the guy in the Army gear runs over: “That’s a nice ring!” he tells the guy in the cab, whose driver would very much like to move.
He examines the guy in the cab’s class ring for several seconds, then darts across the road and into the bar, yelling “Beat ‘em! Beat ‘em! Beat ‘em!”
This year’s game is extra contentious because the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, given to the team with the best record in games between these schools and Air Force, is on the line. That annual series often ends in a tie, in which case the trophy stays with the school that had it the year before. Army hasn’t won the trophy since 1996.
“Of the three, we’re not known for being good at football, so this would be huge for us to take this back and prove to everyone that we are that school who’s best at everything,” Little, an Army captain, says. “Because we’re better than Navy and Air Force at pretty much everything else, but being better than them at football’s what matters.”
The stakes are high, and yet good vibes abound.
“There’s nothing bitter,” says Chris O’Connor, a 1989 West Point grad and Army major who served 10 years. We’re talking at a tailgate the next morning, while some Black Knights play cornhole on U.S. Army boards that are covered in snow. “You look at other rivalries, and they actually get angry. Nobody gets angry at each other, and we realize that after this, you know, we’re together, and we have to kind of go out and fight this fight.
“Brothers in arms, I guess, people have called it.”
That’s the prevailing view among people who make the pilgrimage to this game. “Camaraderie” is the word that comes up most when you ask someone why they’re in Philly.
“We love them,” says Rita, a Naval vet tailgating a few hundred yards away who preferred not to give her last name. “We love the Army, because they are our sister service. But we love the Navy.”
At an Army tailgate, outside Lincoln Financial Field.
You’ll meet cool people at Army-Navy weekend. Here are some I met:
A three-generation military family from Greeley, Colorado. None of the four men had ever attended before. The grandfather is an 87-year old Navy vet, a petty officer second-class named Juils Jorgensen who joined up in 1950 and went to Korea. He’d wanted to make this game since that year, and now he was with his kid and two grandkids, who served in the Marines and the Army. “So yeah, I’ve been looking forward to this,” he said. “Matter of fact, I went to see my doctor and I says, ‘Doc, you’ve gotta keep me healthy for another year.’ He said, ‘OK.’”
Tim and Mary Flynn, a couple from La Plata, Maryland. They’re Army people, ever since Tim went to West Point and graduated in 1985. I met him at a bar and asked, “Navy fan?” because it was dark and I thought his yellow and black rugby shirt was actually yellow and blue. He was gracious, and the two of them invited me to their tailgate the next morning. They insisted I come and eat. Two of their kids are deployed now, one an Army nurse in Iraq and the other a solider in Korea. They put on a tailgate for their family, friends, and some classmates of their son, Tim, the one who’s in Korea. They said I’d fit right in.
I think this is why Army-Navy is the most respectful football game in the world, even on a day when boxed Fireball is flowing by about 7 a.m. It’s fun, and it’s a salute to the academies and service members — absolutely. But it feels like a family reunion first of all, with “family” defined broadly. Typically, nobody’s going to be mean at a family reunion.
“It’s the only football game I’ve gone to where everybody’s on the same team,” says Phil Bedard, an Army dad visiting with a group from Hopedale, Mass. “You’re up in the stands, and you could be sitting next to a Navy person, and you’re all on the same side. You’re all kind of rooting for the same thing. You want Army to win, of course, but there’s a camaraderie here that you don’t get at other events.”
The academies have homecoming weekends during the year. But this game has a very Wednesday-before-Thanksgiving feel to it.
“I mean, I can’t wait to get [inside the stadium], because I’ll run into classmates when I get in there that I haven’t seen in 10, 15 years,” O’Connor says.
Not everyone there is an Army or a Navy fan. A tricked-out Rutgers tailgating truck makes an appearance near the stadium with fans who just wanted to be there, and who had some military backgrounds among their group.
“It’s the best college football game of the year,” says David Levy, a 31-year-old Rutgers law student from Brooklyn. “It’s amazing, ‘cause even though they’re heated rivals, everybody’s pretty nice. It’s pretty calm.”
At 11:03 Saturday morning, I’m talking — tailgate-provided Yuengling in hand — with another Army dad about the triple option. We’re wondering if the snow that has blanketed Philly is going to stick on the grass at Lincoln Financial Field.
(It will. Army will win on a snow-aided missed field goal on a day when its players, in all-white uniforms, are literally camouflaged into the field.)
Mary Flynn holds up a phone of her son, Tim, FaceTiming from Korea.
Mary Flynn brings over an iPhone and introduces me to her son, Tim, who’s FaceTiming from Korea.
“Welcome,” he says.
It’s after midnight where he is, and this is the first year in many years that both he and his deployed sister, Aileena, aren’t at this event. But this is still their tailgate.
I can’t describe how intrusive I feel. This should be college football’s most exclusive game, given what you have to give up to become part of the academies or the military branches they service. But Army-Navy welcomes all. That includes writers who fans meet in bars, and even the people on the other side of the stadium — to a point.
“Everybody coming here, coming together, just being one big family even though it’s a rivalry and we want to win," says Aidan Flynn, Tim’s brother and Mary’s son. "And we desperately want to win.”

Scientifically, it’s all about temperature; the blossoms begin in Kyushu in the south and sweep up the nation to Hokkaido in the north, with local TV stations carrying amusingly technical Cherry Blossom Forecasts of the ‘petal front’ (sakura zensen). Try late March in Tokyo at Shinjuku Gyoen or Ueno Park.

Red crab migration, Christmas Island

Think of the Great Migration and you’ll probably imagine herds of wildebeest and zebras crossing the Serengeti, but there’s another mass-movement of creatures that’s just as dramatic. Visit this remote island between November and December and you may witness between 40-120 million red crabs, who normally dwell in the forests, but make a beeline for the ocean at high tides to spawn. Christmas Island, which also draws tourists for its deserted beaches, hiking and game fishing, is most easily reached on a Virgin Australia flight from Perth.

Manhattanhenge, New York City

Have you taken the ultimate Manhattan sunset photo? Unless you’ve visited New York City on four specific days of the year, this Instagram favorite will remain elusive. For two days in May and two days in July, the Sun sets between skyscrapers on east-west streets, creating a perfectly composed sunset photo. The ultimate cause is the 23.5-degree tilt of the Earth’s axis in relation to its orbital path around the Sun, which makes sunrise and sunset points appear to slide back and forth across the horizon. But Manhattanhenge itself is unique because the city’s grid pattern was designed to exactly match the cardinal points, just as Stonehenge in England was built to align with the rising Sun at the summer solstice.

The Sea of Stars, The Maldives

You probably saw it in Ang Lee’s fantastical Life Of Pi movie, but blue bioluminescence is real. Some phytoplankton and algae living in the oceans produce blue light when they’re disturbed by tides or passing boats, and when they do, it’s spectacular. This marine bioluminescence — often called the Sea of Stars — is visible in many places around the world. Perhaps the most famous is Vaadhoo Island in the Raa Atoll in The Maldives, from where it’s easiest to see either side of a New Moon. Other destinations where bioluminescence can sometimes be seen include Puerto Rico’s Mosquito Bay, Leucadia north of San Diego, and Florida’s Navarre Beach.

The Fire Falls, Yosemite National Park, California

On the eastern side of El Capitan is a waterfall, Horsetail Falls, that occasionally glows bright yellow, orange and red. Caused by the Sun setting precisely in line with the Yosemite Valley for a few days in the third week of February, each sighting lasts just a couple of minutes. “You’re walking through a valley and all of a sudden a waterfall catches on fire,“ says photographer Dave Gordon. “A lot has to line up perfectly to make this exact moment happen––it’s intense to think about.” The phenomenon requires a horizon clear of cloud, and a lot of rainfall in the preceding months.

Total Solar Eclipse, Chile & Argentina

Why all the fuss about August’s Great American Eclipse? If you were in the Path of Totality and saw the stunning solar corona for a few minutes, you’ll know why the eclipse-chasing community just got much larger. Perhaps the ultimate natural experience, a Total Solar Eclipse happens when a New Moon perfectly aligns with the Sun from the perspective of a place on Earth. Being under the Moon’s shadow can take some serious forward planning, but luckily astronomers have calculated the schedules for the next 100,000 years. The next two Total Solar Eclipses are in Chile and Argentina on July 2, 2019, then December 14, 2020. The USA gets another turn on April 8, 2024.

Superbloom, southwest US

Occurring only once every few years between February and mid-March, a so-called Superbloom (botanists call it a Big Bloom) sees deserts get carpets of yellow, purple, pink and white flowers. “You can walk for miles through knee to waist deep Desert Gold sunflowers,” says Ed Madej, a retired geographer, botanist and volunteer researcher in Death Valley National Park, about 2016’s superbloom. “Three months prior it had been bare soil with scattered rocks.” Previous mass-flowering of flowers occurred in 1998 and 2005, and on average a superbloom happens every 11 years. Mojave Desert in California, the Colorado Desert subregion of the Sonoran Desert in California and Arizona, and the northern Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico are where to keep an eye on.

The Neverending Storm, Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela

This one’s hard to miss if you make the journey. Though the very best time to go is the rainy season in October and November, some unusual meteorological conditions mean that Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela stages 10-hour lightning storms on about 300 days every year. “Sometimes you have lighting in each direction and find yourself in the middle of a whole armada of storms that last well after sunrise,” says photographer Jonas Piontek, The Lightning & Landscape Dude, who specializes in lightning shots. “You are isolated from everyone and nature puts on one of her best shows.” The best observation spot is Catatumbo Camp.

Northern Lights, Arctic Circle

The aurora occur because electrically charged particles from the Sun’s corona are constantly smashing into the Earth’s magnetic field and exciting oxygen particles. They get funneled into a constant, but shifting oval around both poles. In the north they’re visible most nights between September to April from between 65°N and 75°N magnetic latitudes (Alaska, Northern Canada and Scandinavia), but that’s only because true darkness at those latitudes becomes elusive in summer. Waiting for clear skies is the real problem, so plan a trip of at least a week. The jet-stream makes Iceland is by far the warmest place in the Arctic Circle, and among the easiest to fly to direct.

16 Ridiculous ‘Facts’ About Animals You Should Truly Stop Reciting
Who hasn’t shared an amazing science fact about sharks, felines, bats, ostriches, or other swine, simply to tone embarrassed later on when you find out the information was incorrect?
No more.
It’s time to put an end to such superstitions, misconceptions, and mistakes about animals passed down through the ages.
To help the cause we’ve rounded up and corrected dozens of the most popular stories we maintain hearing repeated.
Have any favorites we missed? Communicate them to science @techinsider. io.
Kevin Loria, Lauren Friedman, Kelly Dickerson, Jennifer Welsh, and Sarah Kramercontributed to this post. Robert Ferris contributed to a previous version .
MYTH: There are glitches in your strawberry Frappuccino .
Ron Cogswell/ Flickr( CC BY 2.0 )
This one is no longer true.
Before April 2012, Starbucks’ strawberry Frappucino contained a pigment made from the ground-up bodies of thousands of tiny insects, announced cochineal glitches( or Dactylopius coccus ).
Farmers in South and Central America make a living harvesting and crushing the faults that go into the colour. Their crushed forms induce a deep red ink that is used as a natural food coloring, which was “called cochineal” crimson but is now called “carmine color.”
Starbucks stopped using carmine color in their strawberry Frappucinos in 2012. But the color is still used in thousands of other food products from Nerds sugars to grapefruit juice. Not to mention cosmetics, like lovely tints of ruby-red lipstick.

MYTH: Beaver butt secretions are in your vanilla ice cream .
Via Flickr
You’ve likely heard that a secretion called castoreum, isolated from the anal gland of a beaver, applies in flavorings and perfumes.
But castoreum is so expensive, at up to $70 per pound of anal gland( the cost to humanely milk castoreum froma beaveris likely evenhigher ), that it’s unlikely to show up in anything you eat.
In 2011, the Vegetarian Resource Group wrote to five main companionships that develop vanilla flavouring and would like to know whether “theyre using” castoreum. The reaction: According to the Federal Code of Regulations, they can’t.( The FDA highly regulates what goes into vanilla flavoring and extracts .)
It’s evenly unlikely you’ll find castoreum in mass-marketed goods, either.

MYTH: Puppies and cats are colorblind .
flickr user: rob.wiss
Dogs and “cat-o-nine-tails” have much better color imagethan we thought.
Both puppies and felines can see in blue and light-green, and they also have more poles the light-sensing cells in the eye than humen do, so they can see better in low-light situations.
This myth possibly comes about because service animals recognizes complexions differently than humans.
Reds and pinks may appear more light-green to cats, while violet may look like another tint of blue-blooded. Hounds, meanwhile, have fewer cones the color-sensing cadres in the eye so scientists estimated that their emblazon vision is only about 1/7 th as vibrant as ours.

MYTH: Lemmings jump off cliffs in mass suicides .
kgleditsch
Lemmings do not dedicate mass suicide.
During their migrations they sometimes do are falling cliffs, or if they walk into an area they are unfamiliar with.
No one knows exactly when the superstition started, but a 1958 Disney video called “White Wilderness, “which triumphed an Oscar for best documentary aspect, has developed over the years as the likeliest believe but the “documentary” was faked.

MYTH: Sharks don’t get cancer .
Back in 2013, researchers reported a huge tumor thriving out of the mouth of a great lily-white shark, and the other on the head of a bronze whaler shark.
And those aren’t the only cases of shark cancers. Other scientists have reported tumors in dozens of various types of shark species.

MYTH: Ostriches hide by putting their thoughts in the sand
Trisha Shears
Ostriches do not put their psyches in the sand when threatened. In information, they don’t inter their headings at all.
When warned, ostriches sometimes flop on the sand and play dead.

MYTH: Parties get warts from frogs and frogs .
USDA
Frogs or toads won’t give you warts, but shaking hands with a person who is warts can.
The human papillomavirus is what gives people warts, and it is unique to humans.

MYTH: This fossil is called a Brontosaurus .
public domain
Many beings would call this dinosaur a Brontosaurus even Michael Crichton did in “Jurassic Park.”
It is actually called the Apatosaurus. The story developed some 130 years ago during a brawl between two paleontologists.

MYTH: Sharks can reek a plummet of blood from miles away .
This one is a big exaggeration. Jaws is not coming for you from across the ocean if you bleed in the water.
Shark have a highly increased brain part for reeking odors, letting some of fishing operations to detect as little as one place blood per 10 billion parts sea approximately a drop in an Olympic-size swimming pool.
But it the ocean is much, much, very big and it takes awhile for odor molecules to stray. On a very good day when the present are favorable, a shark can reek its target from a few football fields away not miles.

MYTH: Bats are daze .

Being “blind as a bat” signifies not being daze at all.
While many application echolocation to steer, all of them can see.

MYTH: Goldfish can’t remember anything for longer than two seconds .

Goldfish actually have pretty good memories.
They can remember occasions for months , not seconds like numerous people say.

MYTH: Giraffes sleep for only 30 minutes per day .
Wikimedia Commons
Giraffes have fairly typical slumber patterns.
To debunk this one, researchers closely monitored a herd of five adult and three young giraffes for 152 periods, counting all of their siestums and deep sleeps.
The swine normally slept overnight and siesta in the afternoon( voice familiar ?).
In total, each giraffe slept about 4.6 hours every day.

MYTH: Sharks die if they are no longer swimming .
You often hear sharks can breathe only when swimming pushes irrigate over their gills.
That’s true of some sharks, but many others like bottom-dwelling nurse sharks can pump oxygen-rich liquid over their gills without swimming.
All sharks scarcity swim bladders, however, so if they stop float they will sink to the bottom. Fortunately a shark’s torso is incompressible and rapid swoops or ascendings don’t harm them.

MYTH: Humen went HIV because someone had sex with a monkey .
flickr user: kvn.jns
HIV probably didn’t jump to humen through human-monkey sex.
It probably climbed to humans through chase of monkeys for bushmeat nutrient, which gave rise to blood-to-blood contact.

MYTH: Humen progressed from chimpanzees .
Alain Houle/ BMC Ecology Image Competition
Chimps and humen share uncanny similarities , not the least of which is our DNA about 98.8% is identical.
However, progression productions by incremental genetic changes contributing up through many, numerous generations. Chimps and humans did share a common ancestor between 6 and 8 million years ago but a lot has changed since then.
Modern chimps evolved into a separate( though close) diverge of the ape family tree.

Academy of Art University 20th Stellar Debut at NYFW
If you had a front row seat at the New York Fashion Week, first you would probably be excited to see the grand names in the likes of Ralph Lauren, Marchesa and Vera Wang. Then your expectation, curiosity and enthusiasm with a hint of welcomed uneasiness, would probably turn to the new generation of fashion. Because maybe, out of all people, one day you too can tell stories about first witnessing a glimpse of an emerging fashion icon. In the spirit of academics and innovation anyone could be that [new fashion icon].
Fashion shows, especially at the Academy of Art University, bring together not just 13 students but a well-formed team of future designers. Their fashion platform is made out of textile, fashion, jewelry, knitwear and menswear majors. These graduate students share a passion of crafts(wo)man in the making. Their goal isn’t only to pass a runway exam, but place in perspective their niche as part of a greater picture. And what better place to do that than at the New York Fashion Week!
While one can write an entire story about each one of these talents, one designer – at least to the common eye – stood out in the student show and throughout the fashion week. Ben Ellis, Bachelor of Fine Arts Menswear Design, capturing images of beautiful but struggling creatures of his native Anchorage, Alaska brought to our attention unique design, perspective and an alarming growing rate of environmental deterioration. His inspiration are French artists Andre Derain, Henri Matisse and Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky. And his tools repurposed denim and jersey. It is the combination between design and sustainable responsibility what raises the bar in this collection and its seamless, pleasant, presentation of it.
A large snake wraps around the collar of a sleeveless baggy shirt. The tail of a reptile matches the glaciers of our generation. A wolf, lynx and bear’s piercing eyes stare straight into ours – their species embedded large onto Ellis’ mens dress and vest. Dancing dolphins play comfortably on a large sleeve shirt and skirt but amidst hues of pollution in the corners of its seams. The beautiful and exciting element of turbulent dark blue waves repeats. Ellis creativity places a love of nature in a real life setting, where it’s supposed to be anyways, almost as a call to action.
Ironically his designs portray deterioration and pollution. However, some of the patterns in the fabrics could be easily mistaken with a sky full of constellations. Perhaps that very sky mirrors our nature and [emotional] attachment to it.
Amidst all the talk of pollution in his designs, Ellis was a breath of fresh air. The audience, among them 2016 Miss USA Deshauna Barber and 2015 Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach in one place, enjoyed a designer that combined a unique heritage, experience and creative process. The abstract layers were just a platform for his creatures to sit on. It seems that in the 21st century we are craving for our apparel to come out alive. Ellis’ vision matches his generation’s mission.
Eleven years ago in 2005, the Academy of Art University debuted its first show. Today the university represents a large international student body, mostly from Asia, but also local such as Alaska, Utah and Indiana. “This season each designer holds a unique and thoughtful vision,” said Simon Ungless, Executive Director of the School of Fashion. “The collections honor the essence of our industry and carry a conscientious connection to textiles, three-dimensional design, tailoring, and construction techniques. It has been a pleasure for us to guide them into preserving their individuality and integrity.”
After the show Ellis shared his emotions and that of his peers. “[I feel] High, alive, tired, grateful, humbled – and ready.’’

Your views: why it’s going wrong for the Hawks
IN THE wake of consecutive 86-point thumpings, we asked for your take on why it’s going so badly, so quickly for the Hawks.
One thing clear is that many Hawk fans are keeping faith in Alastair Clarkson’s team to revive its fortunes.
Over 40 per cent of Hawthorn supporters say the side’s current form is a blip.
However, opposition supporters are emphatically writing the Hawks off. Over 80 per cent say the Hawks’ 0-4 record and dismal percentage simply reflects where the club is at.
Here’s a selection of your views on the plight of one of modern footy’s champion teams.
Why is it going so badly for the Hawks right now?
All reigns end
The system is designed so no one team can dominate for an extended period of time. They have done a brilliant job, but all reigns end. Just ask the Brisbane Lions.
– Rob Fergus, Brisbane Qld
• Hawks crash ‘inevitable’ says departed champ Jordan Lewis
‘The worst trade period in the club’s history’
You do not give up your two best players (according to club best-and-fairest results) for nothing. No club in history has ever done that, no business in the world would’ve made that deal.
Clarkson said on numerous occasions that age doesn’t matter, only form. Then why push out two legends? Disgraceful. And now club morale is suffering.
– Shaun Grant, Los Angeles USA
Broken promises
Many of the Hawks’ mid-range players (Breust, Smith, Sheils) took pay cuts to stay at the club during the premiership years. They were promised they would be looked after when the club could afford to. Rather than reward this loyalty, they bring in Mitchell, O’Meara and Vickery on big dollars.
This, along with trading club champions, has hurt their culture. Many of the Hawk stalwarts are as a consequence just going through the motions at present.
– Nicholas Oddy, Burwood Vic
Elite individuals are the backbone of a club
Hawthorn have traded their two best players, and another talented player in Bradley Hill. If Geelong were to trade Selwood, Dangerfield and Motlop, there would be more chance of politicians taking a pay cut then the Cats making finals.
Elite individuals are the backbone of a club. In 2014 the Suns were on the cusp of making finals before Ablett got injured. They struggled to win a game without him.
Fremantle in 2015 were minor premiers. In 2016 they had early injuries to their two biggest names in Fyfe and Sandilands and were lucky not to finish with the wooden spoon.
Hawthorn cannot replace Mitchell and Lewis and it will take time for new players to jell. Ageing stars getting close to retirement, no depth in their list and no early draft picks means a steep decline and long and cumbersome rebuild.
– Phillip Thornber, Thurgoona NSW
• The Stats Files: Can Sam Mitchell complete a Brownlow full house?
They rely on precision kicking and they’ve recruited handballers
Once a dominant kicking side, they’ve recruited Mitchell and O’Meara who rarely use the ball by foot. They never relied upon the inside battle as they could beat opponents on the outside with precision passing.
They would have been better suited going after midfield speed and quality users by foot.
– Daniel McCann, Adelaide SA
Handball-happy recruits Tom Mitchell (centre) and Jaeger O’Meara (left). Picture: AFL Photos
‘The young brigade is showing very little heart’
The fact that the team didn’t fire up when Geelong were taking shots at Hodge, a three-time premiership captain and legend of the club, spoke volumes. Hodge displayed what had made Hawthorn a feared side and his teammates looked on like passengers.
– Jordan Prideaux, Melbourne Vic
• The Hawks have lost hope, says club legend Lethal
Unfair compensation for free agents
Little access to high draft picks has been coupled with unfair compensation for players leaving through free agency.
The Hawks’ contemporaries in Geelong have been ‘given’ more from the system, for example two first-round compensation picks for Ablett. Sydney had access to Heeney and Mills from their Academy – players they otherwise would not have got.
Hawthorn’s compensation picks for Franklin, Suckling and others have been a joke. At the time no one cared as the Hawks were winning flags.
– Shamus Lynch, Cheltenham Vic
Eagles beware
The Hawks have too many ageing players who aren’t able to match the pace and four-quarter performances of younger teams.
They have for years relied on their players being first to the ball, and winning the contested ball. This isn’t happening and they are now having to chase the opposition. This isn’t a game the Hawk players have been used to playing.
Trading out Mitchell and Lewis may not have been such a good idea, but reducing their older list had to happen. West Coast will suffer a similar dip in a few years. Last year they recruited Mitchell, Petrie, Vardy – older players with a very limited ‘life’. This will see them also suffer a lack of youth coming through in a couple of seasons.
– Andrew Poole, Salter Point WA
What needs to happen for the Hawks to return to winning ways this season?
Take the Tiger path
It isn’t an overnight solve for the Hawks. Getting game time into the likes of James Sicily is the right step forward. They still have the top-end talent to win games this year, with Burgoyne, Hodge, Rioli, Roughead, etc still capable of getting them over the line.
But they won’t make finals. They would be well served to go down a similar path to Richmond, bringing in exciting pacey players like the Tigers’ Rioli and Castagna.
– Jack Boronovskis, Richmond Vic
Time up for Josh Gibson
As good as Gibson has been, it’s time to go. Put Hodgey back into that sweeping role to replace Gibson and provide direction and rebound out of defence, and get Birchall back in ASAP!
Now is time to throw caution to the wind. Getting thumped by 86 points two weeks in a row with a defensive mindset clearly isn’t the answer. Let’s put Gunston back in the goal square, Roughy at half-forward and Cyril and Poppy crumbing in opposite pockets.
Put the pressure back on the opposition to try and stop us!
The depth of talent is still there and the age of the talent is still in the window to deliver results.
– Jeff Bennett, Perth WA
• Here’s why fixing ‘Flawthorn’ is going to take some time
‘A win or two will grow confidence’
There is some respect in the bank for premiership players and good servants but perhaps an injection of youth and speed might arrest the slump. Finals would not be on the radar this year. Remember that Geelong missed the 2015 finals after forcing the retirements of, or trading senior premiership players.
– Michael Byrnes, Deception Bay Qld
Acknowledge the club stuffed up the trade period
Clarko needs to formulate a game plan that capitalises on the strengths of the current squad, which at least for the moment has lost the skill of precision kicking.
Part of the weekly training needs to be team building exercises – the boys just aren’t jelling anymore.
It would help to drop a few big names down to the twos- Gibson for starters.
Finally, I would hate for anything to be done publicly to undermine the confidence of O’Meara or Tom Mitchell, but there should be some acknowledgement to the fans and the players that the club stuffed up the trade period.
Patrick Swayne, Anchorage, Alaska USA
‘Be ruthless with older players who aren’t playing with speed anymore’
They have been clearly run off the park in all the games so far this season.
Be looking to blood young players, and give freedom to midfielders to take risks when moving the ball forward.
Increasing the pressure in the contest is going to be needed too, as they haven’t won a contested possession count since middle of last season, which is a problem that needs to be addressed in the immediate future if they want to be competitive for the remainder of the season.
– Alex Davies, Adelaide SA
Look to the Dockers
For Hawthorn to have any chance of playing competitive football, they need to follow the example set by Fremantle over the last fortnight, and play their young players.
While the youth at Hawthorn certainly doesn’t match that at Fremantle, developing players for the future must be a priority for a side that is quite clearly bottom four based on current form. In adding speed and youth to their line-up in the form of Griffin Logue, Harley Balic, Ethan Hughes, and Brady Grey, the Dockers managed to knock off the reigning premiers and defeat the Demons in Melbourne.
Despite lacking high picks, Hawthorn still have plenty of options with Dallas Willsmore, Kade Stewart andMarc Pittonet [starring in the VFL] and Jonathan O’Rourke, Teia Miles and the rookie listed James Cousins also putting in reasonable performances.
Injecting these players into the senior side is looking like the only way to add the much-needed spark into a flat side, while also serving the purpose of developing young talent for future years.
– Patrick Moran, Vic
Turning to youth has helped resurrect Freo’s 2017 fortunes. Picture: AFL Photos
We may as well sacrifice this season
If I’m honest nothing can get us back to winning ways this season. But if we want a brighter future we need to get time into the youth. Even Irishmen like Glass and Nash should be given plenty of game time this season. Our season is going to be bad no matter what, but at least we can use it as a stepping stone.
And one thing youth can guarantee is enthusiasm. We’ve seen it with Fremantle so why not with us? Sure, the young guys weren’t taken at the top of the draft, but they are the future of our club. We may as well sacrifice this season because we are not a finals team anymore.
– Oscar Wills, Canberra ACT
All is not lost
Without question, hitting their targets has dropped off considerably. But if you look at our matches so far, anybody would have lost to Essendon in round one; Adelaide; an extremely fired up Gold Coast; and then a blockbuster match where we were in it for three quarters.
Compare that with Richmond’s four easy games against Carlton, a Collingwood who couldn’t kick straight, West Coast at the ‘G, and Brisbane.
It’s a long season and it will average out at the end.
– Jeff Whitty, Hobart Tas
Listen to AFL Exchange
On this week’s podcast the boys discuss:
• Should the Hawks trade Jack Gunston, and what could they get for him?
• Could Hawthorn’s first round pick propel St Kilda to a flag tilt in 2018?
• What is Adelaide’s one weakness?
