Out of all the sitcoms airing on Indian Television, we love and recommend this show for holiday binge-watching. The actors are well-chosen and a few episodes into the show, you will fall in love with the characters and believe their love story. You will cry with them, you will laugh with them and put on loop their beautiful moments. This is not your traditional desi serial so be prepared for a genuine breath of fresh air.

In short, you will want to fall into the love they share. India Could Have Up to 500 Million Covid-19 Cases, Experts Believe

Official Indian government figures, not exactly rosy themselves, appear to be massively understating the scale of the covid-19 pandemic ravaging the country.

Indian health authorities have reported more than 17.6 million cases, but some health researchers suspect the real tally could be dozens of times larger—perhaps even over half a billion, CNN reports. Testing capacity in the country of around 1.4 billion remains grossly insufficient, with close to just 2 million tests being processed per day. World Health Organization chief scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan told the network India’s nationwide positivity rate is around 15% and up to 30% in cities like Delhi, indicating a staggering number of cases left out of the official count—either because the infected individuals in question are asymptomatic, poor, or cannot access testing. Swaminathan added to CNN that prior serology surveys in other countries have indicated infection rates “at least 20 to 30 times higher than what had been reported,” meaning that India could have experienced up to 529 million cases so far.

Ample evidence exists elsewhere that the official government tally, now at 300,000 cases a day, is nowhere close to capturing the full extent of the crisis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the leader of the ultra-right Bharatiya Janata Party, has regularly downplayed the virus and has instead seemed more interested in suppressing criticism on social media sites. Meanwhile, the Indian medical system has collapsed, with shortages of personnel and virtually all supplies and equipment. Indian hospitals are reportedly turning away the sick by the hundreds due to lack of beds or oxygen. The sheer number of dead is overwhelming crematories in New Delhi and other cities, where massive funeral pyres have been operating 24 hours a day.

“In Delhi, at least 3,000 people went to funerals in the last week,” Max Rodenbeck, the chief of The Economist’s South Asia bureau, said on Monday, per CNN. “There is one crematorium in Delhi, which is a big land in the park, and (it is) building 100 new funeral pyres... This, is again, in India’s biggest city with the most attention. What happens beyond Delhi is pretty awful.”

Community medicine specialist Dr. Hemant Shewade told CNN that even before the pandemic, just 86% of deaths were estimated to have been officially tallied by the government, while only 22% of the registered ones were given an official cause of death. Many deaths involving the novel coronavirus are likely being recorded as arising from other causes or not being attributed at all. According to the New York Times, officials in the city of Bhopal reported just 41 deaths related to covid-19 in mid-April, but the city’s “main covid-19 cremation and burial grounds” reported 1,000 deaths over the same period. Similar undercounting has been reported in Lucknow, Mirzapur, and Gujarat. Dr. G.C. Gautam, a Bhopal-based cardiologist, told the paper, “Many deaths are not getting recorded and they are increasing every day. ... They [government officials] don’t want to create panic.”

“We will know only later how many was really the number of people infected,” Swaminathan told CNN on Monday.

Rupal Thakkar, 48, died in a private hospital in Ahmedabad in mid-April after her oxygen levels plummeted. Her brother, Dipan Thakkar, told the Times her death was recorded as due to “sudden cardiac death” and that “it was a lifetime shock. Why would a private hospital connive with the government in hiding the real death numbers? It was an organized crime. It was an illegal act.”

Much of the tragedy in India is believed to be due to a newer variant of the coronavirus known as B.1.617. It has numerous mutations, some of which may make it more contagious than the original strain. Existing vaccines for covid-19 appear to be effective against it. But despite India’s status as a pharmaceutical powerhouse that makes about 60% of the world’s vaccines, over 90% of the population has yet to get a single shot. President Joe Biden’s administration told Modi’s on Monday that the U.S. will send India “oxygen-related supplies, vaccine materials and therapeutics,” and on Sunday it announced it would share 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine with the rest of the world (many bound for India). While public health experts attribute part of the botched rollout to complacency after the pandemic in India appeared to be winding down in September 2020, according to PBS, the country is running critically low on supplies to vaccinate its own population after producers signed so many export contracts.

Swaminathan told PBS that India is currently vaccinating about 2 million people per day, but the rate should be at 6 million to 7 million, and India “needs to be increasing manufacturing capacity several fold.” Investment bank UBS estimates that at the current pace just a quarter of India’s population will receive the vaccine by the end of 2021, according to the Wall Street Journal, and some private hospitals may price the vaccine at $10-$32 a dose, well outside the resources of many low-income families.

“If we had more accurate data in terms of cases, infections, as well as deaths, then, of course, we’ll be much more prepared and also anticipate the healthcare resource needs,” University of Michigan biostatistics and epidemiology professor Bhramar Mukherjee told CNN. “[Faulty data] does not really change the truth. It only makes it worse for policymakers to anticipate the needs.”

IPL, coronavirus and US election results top Google searches in 2020

The coronavirus pandemic and US election results dominated online searches in 2020, though the Indian Premier League remained the top trending query in India, according to the annual ‘Year in Search’ list by Google. The Bihar and Delhi election results also generated considerable searches, along with US President-election Joe Biden and late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samaan Nidhi (PM Kisan Scheme) was part of the top trending queries as well. Globally, coronavirus was the top trending query, with election results, Zoom, IPL and the India vs New Zealand match also making it to the top ten. In India, many of the top searches were centred around the words ‘how to’ and ‘what is’, and reflected the drastic changes brought about by Covid-19, including the lockdown and working from home. In the first category, the most popular searches were for how to make paneer, cake, jalebi, dalgona coffee and sanitiser at home, as well as how to increase immunity, prevent coronavirus and apply for an e-pass. The top ‘what is’ searches revolved around the coronavirus, plasma therapy and hantavirus, but also the viral ‘Binod’ meme, CAA, NRC and nepotism. Local searches for ‘near me’ queries saw Indians searching for food shelters near me, as well as nearby Covid test, night shelter, grocery store, broadband connection and laptop shop. Indians also stepped up to help the less fortunate this year, with searches for food banks increasing more than ever before. In terms of general news queries, the IPL, coronavirus and US Presidential election also triggered the most searches, along with the Nirbhaya case, Beirut explosion, lockdowns, China-India skirmishes, and the locust swarm attack in June and July. Biden was the top personality for 2020, followed by news anchor Arnab Goswami, singer Kanika Kapoor, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, actor Amitabh Bachchan, Afghanistan cricketer Rashid, US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, actors Rhea Chakraborty, Ankita Lokhande, and Kangana Ranaut. Bachchan, who was hospitalised due to Covid-19 in July, was also the third-most searched actor worldwide. The top trending movie of the year was Dil Bechara, followed by Tamil action-drama Soorarai Pottru, Tanhaji, Shakuntala Devi and Gunjan Saxena, with Extraction being the only Hollywood movie on the top ten list. The most-searched web series included Money Heist, Scam 1992, Bigg Boss 14, Mirzapur 2 and Paatal Lok. Globally, some search terms saw an unprecedented spike in 2020, reflecting the new normal. For instance, how to be a teacher, how to learn a new language, how to cut your own hair, pranks on parents and insomnia were all searched more in 2020 than ever before. Amid coronavirus, people also looked for comfort in nature, with searches for ‘sunset near me’ continuously rising from April to September. As masks became mandatory, searches for mask emojis surpassed those for hug emojis. The world also searched how to help more than ever, especially in connection to coronavirus, Black Lives matter, the Beirut explosion and the Australian bushfires. As Covid-19 brought the world to a standstill, how to change the world was searched twice as much as how to go back to normal and searches for how to stop climate change reached a record high.

Ludo ....

I'm writing a review after nearly 2 months... Doesn't mean I've not seen any TV during this time.. I've seen new series like A Suitable Boy... I've seen some oldies but classic , I've seen Mirzapur 2, I've seen ...

Then why didn't I write? Guess was too lazy ... Or was it a case of "writer's block" ... Or a feeling of " what's the use, who reads it, anyways" . But while writing this, I'm realising that I write for myself, and I think I did a blunder not doing so! Will definitely try to make up, so please WATCH OUT!

Coming to the made for streaming Movie .. Ludo ( on Netflix). This Anurag Basu movie has established actors like Abhishek Bachchan , Rajkumar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapoor and of course .. Pankaj Tripathi . They are well supported by new comers Sanya Malhotra , Fatima Shaikh .

the story is perfect for the lockdown, when many of us got addicted to Ludo. I was playing nearly every day , around April and may .. similarly , Anurag Basu himself is addicted and tells the madcap story of 4 sets of people in Ranchi ... Each of a different colour, all being controlled by one "dice" !

The storyline of each is varied and in the first hour one is very confused about where it's all going. Shades of "houseful" madness , with grittiness typical of Basu! It's impossible to describe the stories , and I'm not going to try.

The acting is pretty good for most of the actors. Abhishek Bachchan, in his typical stoic behaviour reminds you of his role in Yuva. Aditya Roy Kapoor is quite funny as a ventriquolist . Pankaj Tripathi is now getting too stereotypical, and should increase the breadth of his roles beyond the Gangster he is always playing!

Difficult to describe the genre ... But I liked the movie, except the length of two and half hours. Why so long, Mr Basu?

Do see it, as a wrap up for the worst part of the lock down ! (Keep fingers crossed)

Mirzapur, the popular webseries on Amazon Prime Video, is in a bit of plan change. The plan was to drop Vikrant Massey’s character Bablu in Season 1 and Divyenndu Sharma’s character Munna in season 2. Things were going as per plot. Massey’s character quietly dropped out of the series in season 1 and no one missed him in season 2.

This is not the case with Divyenndu Sharma’s Munna. The character, with all his brutality and delusions of immortality, has become so popular as to demand a resurrection. That’s right! Fans of the Mirzapur series want Munna back, and from what is heard, he will be brought back in season 3.

How? One  of the main actors from the series said, “I think Divyenndu would be back. I don’t know they will revive his character. But, the script writers will find a way. It happens all the time in soaps. Dead characters are brought back to life on popular demand. So why not in Mirzapur?”

Divyenndu’s sociopathic act in Mirzapur 2 is breaking the  internet. The very talented actor suddenly finds himself in the midst of an unexpected level of popularity. On the large screen, we have seen him play scenestealing second leads to Akshay Kumar in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Shahid Kapoor in Batti Gul Meter Chalu. In both the cases, he was  superior to the  films’ official hero. It’s only now after Mirzapur that he has got the recognition he deserves.
