A Slap Too Far
Summary:
After Jiwon dies, Sumin can only sit frozen and watch her life burn.
Notes:
So I've recently gotten into reading Marry My Husband on Webtoon (I've read it before, just re-reading it) and its mentioned that, in the original timeline, Minhwan goes to jail for murdering her and Sumin deletes social media and stops answering calls. So, I wanted to write something real quick on the shit that goes down. CW: mentions of character death
"...oh no."
Minhwan's voice broke through the sudden silence. Sumin gripped the sheets tighter, her delight at Jiwon's misery being broken by unease at how easily Minhwan had slapped his wife, her head banging against the drawer.
"What? What is it?"
Minhwan reached down. Jiwon was so still and, slowly, Sumin realized that an iron smell was beginning to fill the room. Her heart began to race as his fingers pressed against her neck, clearly feeling for her pulse. "Oh no," he repeated again and she could see the blood drain from his face. "Oh, shit, oh shit, oh shit-"
"What- What-?" Some part of her realized what was happening, all too familiar with that smell, but she refused to believe it. There was no way...
Her boyfriend ignored her questions, rolling Jiwon over on her back. "Jiwon, Jiwon, you stupid idiot, wake up!" He shook her, her best friend's thin body easily jostling. "No, no, you weren't supposed to-" He dropped her, and her head thudded against the floor, splattering...
Blood.
There was more blood.
"...no..."
Sumin sat, frozen. Minhwan ignored her, practically tripping over himself to grab his cell phone. "Hello, 119?! Please, I need an ambulance-" Tears were beading in his eyes. Whether at what little love he still had for Jiwon shining through, or regret at his hasty actions, tears were rolling down his cheeks. "-my wife, she hit her head- I swear I didn't mean to hit her so- Please, she's not moving and there's blood- Please send an ambulance!"
All too soon, sirens began to ring.
And Sumin sat there, frozen.
Her dreams of a happy life, of dancing on Jiwon's grave with Jiwon's husband, burned.
They burned as the paramedics called Jiwon "dead at the scene" and bagged her body.
They burned as the police officers cuffed Minhwan, who didn't even struggle.
They burned as she was yanked from the bed, forced to hastily dress and follow Minhwan.
They burned as Minhwan's parents arrived at the police station, called her a whore and a homewrecker.
Sumin couldn't even muster the ability to act cute at the trial, called upon the stand to provide witness to Minhwan's crime of murder and intention to murder. She was too frozen. As the people stared her down, she found herself admitting to everything- the manipulation to have students bully her, her targeting Minhwan, and Minhwan planning on letting Jiwon waste away and die for the life insurance money. As she admitted to everything, her plan burned.
Her dreams of perfectly sabotaging Jiwon's life, like how she had sabotaged hers, had burned at the last stage.
She wasn't sentenced. How could they? As far as they knew, Minhwan had only confessed his plan about the life insurance a few minutes before he killed Jiwon. But, even as Sumin walked free, she knew her life had utterly been destroyed.
Old classmates called her number, bombarded her email, screamed on social media. How could you, how could you, how could you. She couldn't even find the words to explain that it wasn't her fault that they "misunderstood" her. Nobody would listen to her anyway now, she realized.
The day before she deleted her social media and changed her number, a documentary was presented about the case. Nobody had asked her about it. Instead, she watched as Hiyeon Yu, Juran Yang, Mr. Kim, Eunheo Baek, and others were interviewed.
Only Mr. Kim had said nice things, but then again, he was known as a massive pervert.
The rest said the same thing:
Monster.
And Sumin sat there, frozen, watching as her life burned with one simple slap too far.

Everyone is talking about Sumin and how interesting she is as a villain because she's different but... Min-hwan is legit terrifying because he's so ordinary. Men like him are everywhere: entitled, resentful, misogynist, explosively angry - but capable of appearing normal, and even charming, in the workplace and in other areas of their lives.
Yu-ra is not scary because she's so over the top. Nobody expects that their lives will include an unhinged chaebol heiress plotting murder-by-white-truck and then personally lighting the fire to remove witnesses.
Min-hwan? He's petty and common, and every one of us knows a petty and common man, and every one of us knows a woman who's been hurt by one.

Min-hwan got Ji-won's death and Yura got Ji-hyuk's is just *chefs kiss* Such magnificent poetic justice.
Yura wasn't gonna stop going after Ji-won and the second she got in the car I knew where it was gonna end.

The fact that this absolute parasite of a man recycled his proposal speech and managed to hit the head of the nail with both girls because they were both vulnerable and had desire for a family… or he would've if Jiwon hadn't had knowledge of the future.
Park Minhwan, you absolute scumbag of a human being. Not only are you a sexist, inferior-complexed, gymbro, cryptobro cheating man, BUT ALSO UNCREATIVE?
ofc there's also a lot to say about Sumin. Despite how satisfying it is to see her reap what she's sowed for decades (and would have continued to sow had Jiwon not stood her ground), it's… kind of hard to not feel pity for her. Especially after Minhwan's "you're only a pretty face" comment since she's probably been compared to Jiwon for her grades her whole life.
I really like how they're portraying Sumin's abusive childhood in this adaptation, because while it does not justify at all any of her scummy actions, it ties to her attention-seeking tendencies, and her obssession with being the only human being Jiwon ever needed.
ok that's it for tonight, let's see what next week brings.
#marry my husband#kang jiwon#park minhwan#jeong sumin#marry my husband spoilers#ofc it's satisfactory to see sumin get taken down. but i really felt bad when her childhood was shown in the webtoon :(#i have a feeling that they're not killing minhwan in this adaptation. probably sumin tho. after some attempt to murder jiwon#maybe incarceration for minhwan's abusive tendencies? idk let's wait and see

Marry My Husband: Review Ep 9 - Ep 16 (spoilers under the cut)
Sooo I might have binged the entire half of the series in one night lololol. In my defence, it was sooo good that i absolutely couldn't leave it in between.
After an intense previous eps, eps 9-12 were even more intense. I loved how Su-min began to show her crazy side gradually, and how Ji-won acted like a total queen in the face of that crazy. Also, Ji-won dumping Min-hwan both metaphorically and literally was such a satisfactory moment *chefs kiss*.
But ngl the pregnancy twist by Su-min was genius, and totally worked out in Ji-won's favor. My favourite part was when her ex friends stormed the wedding to take revenge on Ji-won's behalf lmao.
Altho initially I felt that introducing Ji-hyuk's ex-fiancée Oh Yu-ra was a unnecessary move but as the eps progressed, the vision became sooo much clearer. If anything, BoA's character spiced up the show even more.
However I do wish we could've seen more of the potential side couples, the ending made it all worth <3
Over all a 8.5/10 show
#loved loved loved the ending!!!#our Ji-won and Ji-hyuk became such cute parents#and Hui-yeon tooo awwww#i do wish we could've seen more of her and Eun-ho's relationship tho#but oh well#it was such an amazing watch#currently watching#marry my husband#yu jihyuk#kang jiwon#jeong sumin#park minhwan#park min young#na in woo#kdrama#k drama#korean drama#tv series

I think I know why fate transferred Ji-wan's stomach cancer to Mrs. Yang. Mrs. Yang is in similar Ji-wan , before her death in the other timeline. I think fate was looking for someone similar to Ji-wan and found that in Mrs. Yang. Fate wasn't going to find it in Soo-min. Soo-min is not a pushover. Soo-min is a manipulator. And the reason I think fate gave Min-hwan Ji-wan's death is because he was the one who killed her in other timeline. Call it fate meeting out justice. I think it's a more fitting punishment for Soo-min that she has to live with the fact that Ji-wan will be happy and have all the things she wanted. And fate giving Yu-ra, Ji-hyuk's death. Again think it as fate stepping in. In way she is like Soo-min, but way worse. Yu-ra would've found a way avoid answering for her crimes. Ji-hyuk only wished for Ji-wan to be happy and never wished for some else to take his death.
As for Ji-wan manipulating Min-hwan and Soo-man. They were too entangled in her life for her to just walk away from them. Soo-man coveted everything Ji-wan had. And Min-wan saw Ji-wan as someone he could leach off. So manipulating both parities into a relationship, that was fated to happen anyway, was Ji-wan's only option.

☆ // marry my husband appreciation post five.
one . two . three . four .
Look at this munchkin! He’s so cute, he’s just flustered, that’s all. By her confession, I mean.
He remembered the cake she liked to eat, so he made some more for her. This cutie is going to give me diabetes, atp! 😭
Sumin really is delusional, and in a destructive way, I mean. She really thought that jiwon was sleeping with minhwan; that trash. Lol, she has high standards now 😂
These two are too cute for me, 🥰 i’m leaving.
Ah, it’s the way she asks his grandfather 🤌🏻
Sumin had the audacity to call jiwon’s mother and ask jiwon to give her money. Well, our girl already saw through their filthy tricks, obviously, after the way she left jiwon in her father’s care, she isn’t letting her mother get back into her life, just because she’s a parent. What’s wrong is wrong.
