tsai ming-liang and lee kang-sheng’s relationship drives me insane. an undebuted gay director sees a random straight man in an arcade and decides he can never make a film without that man in it. and he doesn’t. and every single film they make together is so full of longing and loneliness and uncertainty and isolation, all centering around lee kang-sheng’s body. the river (1997) actually happened to lee kang-sheng, minus the gay sex. this has been going on for thirty years

I made this list a few days ago after feeling irritated at the predictability and staleness of the Sight & Sound list, but really I think this a good moment for me to make this list for myself. As you will see from my end of year list in a month, the emergence of a continuous type of filmmaking - Tiktok and Douyin filmmakers posting every day, Youtubers posting every few days - presents a new kind of problem for me who actually wants to make lists that do justice to beautiful filmmaking movements.
