Love is Love, Supergirl, All-New X-Men & More Nominated for GLAAD Awards
The annual GLAAD Media Awards, which “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives,” has expanded its comic book category from five to ten nominees, all from a variety of different publishers.
The nominees cover a wide spectrum of books. Perennial awards favorite “Saga” scored a nomination, as did the violent and bloody “Midnighter and Apollo.” The all-ages “Lumberjanes” made the list, and so did the recent Ta-Nahisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze run on “Black Panther,” a dense political thriller which counts a prominent lesbian couple among the superhero’s bodyguards. Additionally, Dennis Hopeless’ “All-New X-Men,” which navigates the complex coming out story of classic mutant character Iceman, was also nominated.

Some books, such as “Love is Love,” deal with issues of equality more explicitly, both in the comic and in real life; that is to say, the proceeds from “Love is Love” were donated to the victims of the Orlando Pulse shooting. Comics like “Kim & Kim,” on the other hand, put queer characters at the forefront of rollicking adventure.
The full list of comic book nominees is as follows:
“All-New X-Men” by Dennis Hopeless, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessy, Paco Diaz, Nolan Woodard, Rachelle Rosenberg, Cory Petit
“Black Panther” by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Brian Stelfreeze, Chris Sprouse, Walden Wong, Karl C. Story, Laura Martin, Matt Milla, Joe Sabino, Clayton Cowles
“DC Comics Bombshells” by Marguerite Bennett, Laura Braga, Sandy Jarrell, Maria Laura Sanapo, Mirka Andolfo, Pasquale Qualano, Marguerite Sauvage, Juan Albarran, Kelly Diane Fitzpatrick, J. Nanjan, Jeremy Lawson, Wendy Broome, Wes Abbott
“Kim & Kim,” by Magdalene Visaggio, Eva Cabrera, Claudia Aguirre, Zakk Saam, Taylor Esposito
“Love is Love” anthology originated by Marc Andreyko
“Lumberjanes” by Shannon Watters, Kat Leyh, Carey Pietsch, Ayme Sotuyo, Carolyn Nowak, Maarta Laiho, Aubrey Aiese
“Midnighter / Midnighter and Apollo” by Steve Orlando, David Messina, Aco, Hugo Petrus, Fernando Blanco, Gaetano Carlucci, Romulo Fajardo, Jr., Jeremy Cox, Tom Napolitano, Josh Reed
“Patsy Walker, A.K.A Hellcat!” by Kate Leth, Brittney L. Williams, Natasha Allegri, Megan Wilson, Rachelle Rosenberg, Clayton Cowles
“Saga” by Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples, Fonografiks
“The Woods” by James Tynion IV, Michael Dialynas, Josan Gonzalez, Ed Dukeshire
GLAAD’s TV nominees are similarly diverse. They include comic book adaptations like “Supergirl” and “Wynonna Earp,” as well as comic adjacent shows like animated favorite “Steven Universe.”
The full list of nominees is available online. The awards recognize media that tackles issues of LGBTQ equality head on, as well as stories that represent the inner lives of queer characters. Some of the nominees, such as the movie “Star Trek Beyond,” simply include LGBTQ characters without calling much attention to that fact at all.
GLAAD is a successful and far-reaching organization that campaigns for the rights of the LGBTQ community. The award ceremonies will be held in Los Angeles, California on April 1st and in New York on May 6th.
