Milford Haven engine/locomotive shed - Jun 1959 by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old photograph taken on a West Wales 'shed bash', of Milford Haven engine/locomotive shed (87Hs) in Jun 1959. The original single track timber shed was opened in 1863 by the Milford Railway then replaced in 1890 by a single track brick built shed. The line was absorbed by the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1896, the shed was closed by British Railways (BR) in Dec 1962 and subsequently demolished. This is in a rail enthusiast old photo album, there is nothing on the photo reverse but the page is annotated "West Wales Tour, Milford Haven Shed, Two engines on - 3639 & 3654, 7 Jun 1959". Unfortunately the album owner's name is not known. Old/new overhead maps view:- maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.6&lat=5... Nos. 3639 and 3654 were C. Collett designed '5700 class' 0-6-0PT engines, built at the Swindon Works and new to the Great Western Railway (GWR) in late 1939. In 1948 the railways were nationalised, GWR becoming British Railways (BR) Western Region, 3639 was withdrawn from service in Jan 1963 (scrapped Sep 1963) and 3654 withdrawn in Aug 1965 (scrapped Feb 1967). If there are any errors in the above description please let me know. Thanks. đŸ“· Any photograph I post on Flickr is an original in my possession, nothing is ever copied/downloaded from another location. đŸ“· -------------------------------------------------

Pembrokeshire, county of castles, coves and film star sands.
Tumblr media
The eye was piercing. The gaze was imperious. The message an unspoken “Do you know who’s in control around here?” Eventually, of course, the human in boots, inching forward as quietly as he could along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, prevailed over the haughty feathered hunter perched on a fence post.
I was no more than 15 feet away, with the summit of nearby Carn Llidi as a backdrop, when the sparrowhawk very reluctantly gave way. It lifted off and, after a few grudging wing beats, alighted again about six posts along.
In the space of ten minutes, as I moved slowly forward, it repeated this procedure: lift off, lazy flutter of wings and perch again, about fives times, before cutting back in a wide arc across the field to roughly where I first met it.
The guidebooks tell you to look down from the cliffs for seals, porpoises, dolphins and to the windy space between land and sea for choughs, those comical blackbird-size birds with red legs. But not a word about this top predator, which had clearly dined so well on the local singbirds that it scarcely needed to move. (The birds sang on, despite the predations.)
Approach this national trail as you might a long, detailed menu in a restaurant, one with a wide choice of starters, many of them a meal in itself. There are also some main courses, specialities of this county, and you will want to sample one or two of them. However you would need a giant’s appetite to consume the whole 186-miles, still less the entire 870 miles Wales Coast Path, of which this is only a section.
Let’s start with those appetizers. (The sparrow hawk would be in the “today’s specials” section.) I stayed at the county’s western end, on its final thrust towards Ireland. As the chough flies, Waterford is closer than Cardiff.
Hearabouts any three to five mile stretch contains many permutations. The trail twists, it lurches, it plunges, it turns severely back on itself then climbs steeply down into and up out of tiny coves. Little tumbling streams cross your path. Banks dense with foxgloves enclose your way. A flower strewn meadow ends in a sudden sheer drop down to waves boiling over jagged rocks. The view constantly changes. Nothing stays the same on this path for more than a few minutes.
I did an idle measurement on Google Maps afterwards. Made into a straight line the Pembrokeshire Path would stretch here roughly from London, 198 miles away. In 2010, duly impressed, National Geographic Magazine judged this the second best coastal destination in the world, just behind the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland, Canada.
Every three or four miles, over much of the western end at least, there is a convenient pause, in the shape of an attractive little harbour, and there’s a fair chance it is served by the coastal bus.
This part of the coast was bristling with unexpected, at least to me, industrial history. We think of the Welsh valleys studded with smokestacks and pit heads, but there is the evidence of long and serious industry in this quiet backwater. The clues that somewhere, such as Abereiddi, was once very busy is in the eroded remains of labourers’ cottages. In other places those that stood up long enough after the decline are now holiday cottages.
We dropped down into Porthgain, an industrial powerhouse  in its day. The roads of England were paved with crushed dolerite processed here. Now gentrification is complete. The main industrial building is now the Shed Fish and Chip Bistro. On our visit no fewer than ten Norwegian-registered vintage MG sportscars were neatly parked on the quayside.
The drivers and passengers were in the Shed, where they may well have been enjoying the exquisite if expensive fresh crab sandwiches, sold at prices Chiswick visitors would recognize. We ordered the same at the Sloop Inn opposite. We were perfectly positioned, some time later, to see the MGs set off in orderly convoy on the road to Fishguard.
The coast continues like this for miles, with a spot of strenuous striding, frequent heart-lifting views, tantalising glimpses of islands big and small just off the coast. Here and there an encounter with a profound religious past, in the ruined chapel and well of St David’s mother St Non, for example.
There are other, bigger harbours. In Solva the man in the car park handed out leaflets promoting all the little art craft shops, restaurants and guest houses. The Dutch and German cars underline the county’s appeal to a discerning international market – the drivers were not there for the weather.
And so to those landscape “main courses” I mentioned. On the path from the lifeboat station at St Justinians, heading north, I am suddenly above a wide, flat,  sandy beach where somebody had expertly drawn a vast jellyfish, so big it could only be seen to proper effect from 200 yards up, on the footpath.
Pembrokeshire’s beaches are now an international hot property.  Hollywood could have chosen some enchanted strand on Bali or Hawaii as the location where Kristen Stewart thunders through the surf with 80 muscular extras on horseback in the 2012 movie ”Snow White and the Huntsman”. Instead the studios chose the wide, flat, golden film-star sands, perfectly smoothed by the outgoing tide, of Marloes Sands, on southern Pembrokeshire, even if they did computer-generate an extravagant outburst of fairy-tale towers on the conveniently flat-topped Gateholm Island, which stands just yards off the headland.
Marloes first broke into the movies in 1967 when The  Lion in Winter was filmed here. Whitesands was used in the BBC4 Richard II.
In 2010 Hollywood came to another Pembrokeshire beach, Freshwater West. Ridley Scott had filmed Robin Hood there, with Russell Crowe. The filmmakers built higgledy-piggledy Shell Cottage there for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The beach is clearly visible in the film. You will find no trace that the scrupulously tidy film makers were ever there. It’s the same at Marloes, left just as they found it.
You could easily construct a week or ten day holday around this sublime coastland, mixing up walks with boat trips to Skomer or Ramsey, dining out in the many harbour pubs on fresh local fish. The coast path has been conveniently cut up into 200 bite-size local walks, some of them circular.
One took us a few miles inland to St Davids, which is Britain’s smallest city, by virtue of the cathedral. We arrived early to benefit from its remoteness. Most day trippers, coming from afar, don’t get there until well on in the morning. We came across the intimate little cathedral, nestling in a green valley, well before the throng.
In the nave we had plently of room for some entry-level surveying, measuring the startling incline on the spirit level app on my daughter’s smartphone. It is almost two degrees.
St David’s has an understated nobility, because of its size and unusual position. On a scale of conspicuous cathedrals, Lincoln would be a 10. St David’s would be a 1. It was a steep climb up to the city, in reality a pleasant little town, where we gave in to the Italian charms of  the Bench cafe for coffee and ice cream.
Until the early 1800s Pembrokeshire would have been as remote by land as some European cities were for a traveler starting out from London. Railways opened the county up, and oil at Milford Haven and the Irish boat traffic through Fishguard Harbour ensured the rail links survived even in the bleak post-Beeching era.
The trains helped build Tenby into as gracious a Victorian resort as Whitby or Ilfracombe. Novelist George Eliot was inspired enough by her visit to this perfect little resort in 1856 to take up writing. It has been a destination of rare distinction ever since.
A cordon of high, narrow Georgian and Victorian town houses in delicate pastel colours still wraps around Tenby’s sea front. To dodge the wind you either head to the sandy beach on the town’s north flank, or, if it’s blowing from the other direction, seek out the little harbour to the south.
Praise, then, for frequent services direct from Manchester deep into Pembrokeshire, connecting with services from London and the west and south.
It’s still the case, of course, that most visitors drive here. They will find the car necessary for visiting the centre of the county where the excellent bus service doesn’t reach.
Pembroke, is technically on the coast. The tide probes almost under the walls of the castle where  Henry Tudor, who became Henry VII, was born in 1457, (It was restored to its formidable Norman pomp after a crumbly, ivy-covered interlude in the 1900s.) But it feels like an inland town.
The castle, proud and imposing above this ancient town, is just one the county’s rich crop of citadels, The list includes Manorbier, Cilgerran, Haverfordwest, Lamphey, Llawhaden, and Picton castles. There are over 50 all told, if you include forts and the reconstructed 600 BC Iron Age citadel Castell Henllys. Leading the list is Carew Castle. It overlooks a serene millpond, with a 11th century Celtic Cross and Wales’s only restored Tidal Mill. Narberth is another appealing little castle town. If you buy the Welshcakes in Waitrose, they come from here.

SHED CLEANING SERVICES
If you have a property with an old storage shed that’s stuffed full with all sorts of things, you’re certainly not alone. Lawn equipment, old boxes of who knows what, rolled carpet, paint, and practically anything else can be found in the space. Sheds tend to start out as an organized space where you park your lawn mower, string trimmer, and fertilizer cart, but, over time, they are overrun by things you just don’t want to deal with. It’s unorganized and messy and you need to clean out your storage shed to make it useful once again. How to Cleanout a Storage Shed Your once, well organized and functional storage shed is now a junkyard with walls and a roof. You want to reclaim that space and make it a go-to place where you can easily retrieve what you need, when you need it. The problem is, you really don’t know where to start and what’s worse, you’re unsure as to what’s in-store when you throw open the doors — the same doors which haven’t been opened for weeks or months on-end — just like that self storage unit you rent and rarely visit.
With so many of us working in the garden every day the storage shed where we keep our supplies has gotten, shall we say a little “cluttered”. OK it’s a mess, but what better opportunity to show what a little planning and elbow grease can accomplish. —Home Depot That presents the first obstacle of many, how to get into the storage space and what you might encounter. If you haven’t gone into the shed for some months, it’s best to proceed with caution because you might encounter some nasty critters who have taken-up residence inside. It’s not uncommon for roaches, rodents, and snakes to get in and nest, which can become a source of infestation in your home nearby. Here’s how to do storage shed cleanout right to retake the space:
Knock and bang on the doors and walls. As mentioned, pests like to turn storage sheds into safety havens, and these can be very problematic. Besides, you don’t want to be surprised by a snake or have cockroaches falling when you fling open the doors. So, knock and bang on the doors and walls to send them scattering. Allow a few moments to pass, then open the doors slowly and carefully.
Clear everything out. You’ll have to clear the entire shed out down to the last item. Leave nothing inside and when pulling things out, put like items together to make organizing and purging a bit more simple.
Hose it down and scrub all surfaces. If you have the shed wired for electricity, be sure to turn it off at the breaker and don’t wet any outlets, switches, or, wiring. Hose the inside down, and, use a degreasing cleaner for best results. Be sure to scrub all surfaces and then let it dry out overnight.
Sort everything to get organized. While it’s drying out, you should sort all the contents to get them organized and separate things into items you’ll keep, stuff to give away or sell, and, junk to throw out.
If you have a lot of junk from your storage shed clean out, just visit LNK JANITORIAL SERVICES and we’ll be happy to lend a helping hand. Don’t worry about having to make trips to different places and pay hefty fees, we’ll do it all for you..

The Importance of AC Duct Cleaning
Air conditioners are the perfect growing grounds for moulds, bacteria and various other microorganisms. Researches in the past few years have suggested that the indoor air is much more polluted than the outdoor air. Since an average human spends 90% of his time indoors, it is highly critical to keep up quality of indoor air.
Why does the air conditioner greet you with a blast of stale and damp air every time you switch it on? This is because with time, the components of an HVAC system become contaminated with various foreign particles making the indoor air quality to deteriorate with time. People with a history of respiratory disorders, children and elderly are more vulnerable to ailments caused by molds and airborne allergens. Some of the most common allergies that are a result of breathing in infected air include vertigo, nausea, eye irritation, chest and nose congestion, runny nose, irritation of eyes and headache.
If the general condition and air odour do not improve, it is a suggestion that you should call an AC cleaning company in Dubai to get your AC duct thoroughly cleaned. Apart from getting rid of the unwanted mould growth in the AC duct, an AC duct cleaning regimen will also help you terminate any type of insect growth, dust and debris and any other type of infestation. In several cases where inmates smoke tobacco or have pets, air duct cleaning also helps in purifying the air quality. Since it is natural for pets to shed hair, this shed hair is drawn to the AC system that not only causes breathing trouble, but by accumulating in the fins of the coils hampers the efficiency of the system.
A clean HVAC system will run more efficiently as it will naturally produce more pressure at a lesser time to cool your home. This will mean more savings on electricity bills. Moreover, a clean blower will run cooler with lesser risk of breakdown, again adding to energy savings.
Asthma and other respiratory ailments are a result of impure air and these conditions can worsen in impure indoor environments. Several patients every year are admitted to hospitals mostly owing to respiratory troubles. Maintaining a clean HVAC system is crucial for assuring a good health for you and your family. Call professional AC duct cleaning services and breathe in a healthy environment.

If you have a lot of junk from your storage shed clean out, just visit LNK CLEANING COMPANY and we’ll be happy to lend a helping hand. Don’t worry about having to make trips to different places and pay hefty fees, we’ll do it all for you..

What has been one of the most challenging things that you have experienced or are currently experiencing?
“There are two things: one, kind of historic in my life, going back to when I was a teenager, or 20 years old, and right now. So, there are two different things I’m currently dealing with. I guess going back, I’ve dealt with a lot of death in my life, close family relations passing away throughout my life, ever since I was a kid. My father died when I was 10. He had a brain tumor. He was an older man. I’m the youngest of five kids. He was actually pushing 60 when I was pushing 10, and I had a pretty distant relationship with him. He was not a lovey-dovey dad, and I didn’t really know him very well. He worked in New York City and we never saw him, and when he was around, he was pretty grumpy and pretty mean to my brothers. They would call it abusive. I didn’t really get that because I was a good kid and didn’t really give them a hard time, so I didn’t really see much of that, but I witnessed it towards my older brothers. One of the things I remember about him—and I actually don’t remember a lot about him—was ‘shut up and eat your peas.’ That was the line at dinner, that was what we got, and he was serious; it wasn’t a joke. It became a joke after he died. That was his energy that we got.
“My dad had a stroke and went into the hospital and, within less than a year, he died. It was a brain tumor, and it took him away very quickly. This was 1972 and, back then, a brain tumor was pretty much a death sentence. They didn’t have the technology, the cures, and the medicines that they have now. There was a sense of relief when he died. I think my mother was really challenged by him. I think he was pretty abusive to her. My older brothers felt like they were abused by him, and when he passed away, there was actually a sense of lightness in the family. My mom found herself at that point. I was growing older; I was the last of five kids that she raised. She never worked at the time; she was a full-time mom. I got to witness her coming out of her shell, traveling, and getting a job. She was nurse’s aide. We moved from New York to Connecticut at that point, a couple of years after he died. One by one, my brothers who were older moved out of the house by the time we moved to Connecticut. They were all kind of on their own, but one by one, they moved up to Connecticut. They stayed in the basement for a little while and then got their own places. So, they came and went as their financial situations came and went.
“I was closer to my older brother Dave than to anyone else. He was the middle child, two levels up. My brother Paul was younger and closer to me in age, but I really felt connected to Dave. He was a musician, a photographer, and a really nice guy. He was really nice to be around, and my brother Paul was kind of a jerk who gave me and Dave a hard time, so I didn’t feel very close to him until later on in my life. Dave struggled with everything. He just kept getting curve ball after curve ball after curve ball, and he kept swinging and striking out. He struggled with everything; it felt like he had bad luck with everything. Luck is not luck. We make our own luck. It was hard to witness all the challenges that he had. He got drafted to go to Vietnam right towards the end of that era. Within a month of going off to basic training was the first time he attempted to commit suicide. He was just not built for that; there was no way a person like him could survive a war. I could just imagine how hard that must have been to know that you’re going to be shipped off to Vietnam. He got a dishonorable discharge immediately, and ended up in psychiatric treatment for a while. He was probably 19 or 20 years old at that point in his life. I didn’t really know much about it. They kept it under wraps from me, but I kind of knew.
“Dave and I were very close later on, too. I went away to school and when I came back from college—well, I should say, the year before I went away to school, as a senior in high school, we both worked at a record store. It was the best job I ever had. It was a really cool store, and he worked there and got me a job there. It was a blast, it was the best place to work, and then I went away to school. When I came back from school, instead of going home to my mom’s for the summer, I lived with Dave, just the two of us. And, again, we had a great time; we ingested all kinds of stuff. At that point, I was a full-blown alcoholic and drug fiend, and he was too, to a degree. We were definitely heavy into self-medication at that point, but it was a great summer.
“I worked at the record store again for that summer, and I worked at Toad’s Place at night. I’d work at Toad’s at night and at the record store during the day. I road my bike; I didn’t even have a car. I rode my bike between the record store in Orange and Toad’s Place in New Haven, and lived in West Haven. It was crazy coming home from work, on a bike, at two o’clock in the morning, but I got to witness some incredible shows that summer. That was the year that Santana played at Toad’s Place and the Rolling Stones played at Toad’s Place; that was crazy. It was kind of a high point for me. I was having a great time, but I knew that Dave was still challenged. One of his big things that he had made clear was that he wanted to reach a certain degree of success by the time he was 30 years old, and that was creeping up. That summer before he was 29, and the next summer when I came home and lived with my mom, he had a housemate at that point, so it wasn’t an option for me to live there again.
“That second summer was 1982, and I’ll never forget this. It was Labor Day weekend, and I was about to go back to school that week at UNH. I was changing schools and was going to stay closer to home, and I was working at a stereo shop. I’m a nice guy, I’m always friendly with people, I’m always nice to people, I’m always looking on the optimistic side, I’m always positive. That Labor Day, I had to work, and it was a busy holiday week. If it’s a holiday, they got to throw a sale in retail. That day I was a bear, I was just a bitch to everyone. I was mean, I was nasty. I was not selling anything. I was just in a really, really nasty place and it was totally unexplainable; there was no reason for it, I just was, and I had to get hold of Dave. For some reason, I kept calling him every hour, calling him up, checking in, checking in, checking in; I felt connected without knowing anything about what was going on. There was this invisible tether pulling at me to contact him, and just living in this really angry way that day. When I got out of work, I went straight to his apartment. I didn’t have a key to the place anymore, so I couldn’t get in, so I called his housemate and he came over eventually. Later that day, I went home and kind of gave up. Dave’s housemate came home later that day and found Dave. He had killed himself—shot himself in the head. It wasn’t left up to me, but I took it upon myself at that point to deal with the situation and call people. I had to call family members. I had to call friends. I had to go visit people who lived up the hall we knew and let them know. That became my job, and I barely shed a tear. We did a very alternative funeral deal. We didn’t do any of the funeral home stuff or any of that. Different family members reacted differently. Of course, my brother Paul, who tends to see things in a very negative, dark way, was nothing but anger and blame.
“I didn’t give myself permission to feel what had happened. I have this thing with acceptance. I accept people for who they are, right at face value, and I accept situations immediately. Some people take years to get over shit. It’s like my divorce—I was like, ‘Okay, you know what, I’m going to move on, I’m going to accept you.’ I’m still friends with my ex-wife. The acceptance was almost immediate in that this guy was tortured. This guy had awful, awful experiences in his life that brought him to a place that gave him no option. So, I told myself that I accepted it, but man it finally hit me after we had this little memorial gathering of people at the house. A couple of my friends said, ‘Let’s go to the beach.’ We lived a half-mile from the beach. So, we all walked down to the beach and—I’ll never forget this—every time I’m at this hill that heads down to the beach in Woodmont (Milford), I flash back to that moment when I finally lost it; I finally blasted tears and just went full-blown cathartic. Me and my friends just sat on the beach, and they stood by me and kept close and let me go, let me rip. Losing Dave was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced in my life.
“Losing my dad, I was 10, I was sent away to my sister’s house in New Jersey while he was in his last month, so I didn’t really witness that. I didn’t really have a chance to, and I didn’t really know him and, what I knew of him, was an ornery guy. But when Dave died, it just really hit hard, and I ended up not going back to school that week. I was supposed to start school that next day, literally like Tuesday, after he died on Sunday or Monday that weekend. I was supposed to start school, which was just not an option. There was no way. I gave up that semester and just walked away from school to deal with all the shit that was going on. That was really hard. I really, really miss him. He was my best friend and he was my mentor when it came to photography and music. The music that he listened to formed my taste in music along with my other older brothers, who all had very active musical tastes. They weren’t musicians, but they all listened to different types of music all the time back in the 60’s and 70’s, and I became obsessed with that as a kid and as an adult.
“Dave had a profound influence on me in a couple of different ways. First of all, I became a more compassionate person. I learned to love anyone, no matter who they are, no matter what their challenges were. I learned to see through their challenges and be there, and be positive, to just be there for people who are challenged, and accept them. Like I said, he was a photographer and a musician, and I went through a bunch of stupid shit career-wise that I never loved, but eventually when I hit my late 30’s, I walked away from a decent corporate job. I quit my job and became a full-time musician and photographer. I always had photography as a part-time thing my whole life and, up until that point, all I did was what I was hired to do as a photographer, which is all kind of boring stuff, and then photograph my kids and my vacations. Then, I went on my second honeymoon to Scotland, and the photography that I took on that trip was just so stunning that my then wife, who I had just married, and who was an artist and connected to all kinds of galleries and architects who do interior design and stuff like that, said ‘You’re better than this, you’re better than just being a hired gun. You can be in hired galleries, you can have your own website and do your own thing.’ I also discovered drumming about that time.
“As soon as I started getting into music, I realized how much of an influence Dave had on me and how, every time I pick up a drum and play, it’s like he’s right there playing the guitar and, every time I pick up a camera, he’s right there with me hanging out with me and telling me to keep going. I feel his presence every day. He’s more real now than he was when he was real. I have nothing but positive memories of him. When I met you, you reminded me of him. You look like him. You act like him. You have the same energy, and some of the same challenges. I shared that with my brother Paul, and, of course, he sent back this incredibly offensive, completely disconnected, dark version, saying, ‘Well, it sounds like we need to talk, because there was a dark side to Dave that you seem to forget.’ Yeah, we need to talk and you need to hear my positive memories. I guess I have to accept that that’s his version and I have mine, which really sucks, because I’d like to be able to have conversations about Dave with my family and not have it turn into an argument about who Dave really was. I know who Dave was. I lived with him. I knew his challenges, but I choose not to focus on them at this point, because it does me absolutely no good to do that.
“I have a strong belief in my guides. I have this team of guides who, when I’m on the right path, I get rewarded. All this awesome stuff happens when I’m on the right path, and when I start to stray down the wrong path and do shit that I shouldn’t be doing, all these obstacles start popping up. It happens all the time, and I’m thoroughly convinced because no one knows me better than my mother, who passed away when I was 30, my brother who passed away when I was 20, and my dad who passed away when I was 10. These are my guides. These are my angels, and they don’t fuck around. They are definitely present for me and I love that, and I acknowledge that and give thanks for that every day. I say a prayer every day when I wake up. It’s not a prayer to God, it’s a prayer to them and acknowledges them. Every day, every fucking day, I say that prayer, and I love it. I am very grateful to have had Dave there, and to still have Dave there as a guide. I think it’s probably best to stick with that as one storyline, because if I get into the whole political thing right now . . . it’s really, really troubling for me right in this moment. That’s a whole different story, and I don’t know that anything can be solved with that, because it’s something out of my control and I have trouble accepting it, having trouble figuring out what I can do as one person in this situation.”
With all that grief you’ve experienced, losing your father at 10, your brother at 20, and your mother at 30, what did you find yourself doing to cope with the grief and those losses in your life?
“I started smoking pot at a pretty young age with my older brothers. I probably started smoking at about 14 and a little bit of drinking at that point, but mainly it was smoking pot. That became a thing that I did for years, decades, and I submerged myself in work at a very early age. When I was 13 or 14, I took on three different newspaper routes in a condominium complex with 240 units, and the day I turned 16, I got a job working retail. Most of the time in my life, I had two or three jobs. Even when I had a full-time job as an adult, after graduating, I would shoot freelance photography and video stuff on the side. I completely immersed myself in work for a while, and then I immersed myself in parenting. I raised two girls as a part-time dad. When I was married to their mother, all I had was work and my kids. I didn’t have a marriage; we were miserable with each other, we couldn’t stand each other. We both just focused on the kids and our careers, and that’s what kept us together for ten years. Definitely, parenting was a thing and, when I got divorced, there was so much guilt around it, I dropped everything. I worked at ESPN, which is a 24/7/365 job. I’d get out of work at 2:00 in the morning, go home to my sister’s house (I lived at my sister’s for a while) and have 3 to 4 hours of sleep, get up and go to where the kids lived. They were young at the time, so I’d get one of them on the bus and the other one was in diapers. I would hang out with them all day and then go to work at 6:00 and work until 2:00 a.m. Literally, I had no life whatsoever, other than work and parenting, and I had no problem with that. I still choose to immerse myself in my work, but my work is enjoyable now. I’m a drummer and a photographer, and there’s no stress in that other than making ends meet. I love my job. I love my work. I’d rather be broke and doing what I love than working a job that pays a ton of money and makes me miserable, because that’s what I witnessed with my dad. My dad went off to New York City every day, bought us a nice big house in the suburbs, and was a miserable person. You hear countless experiences of people who have everything financially and are miserable and make people around them miserable.
“Music and art are what keep me alive, and because I’m self-employed, I’m able to give myself permission to go for a walk in the woods with my camera without any assignment or purpose other than capturing beauty. That is priceless. I wouldn’t trade that for the world.”
What did you learn about yourself through these losses, through these divorces, through this change of career?
“The acceptance piece is a big one, and that includes self-acceptance. I’ve learned to accept people for who they are. I’ve been able to witness the social change that’s taken place since Dave died, and I wish he was here to witness every breakthrough. Every great song that’s come out since he died, it breaks my heart that he hasn’t been able to hear it, but, I don’t know, maybe out there . . . It’s really all about acceptance and celebrating life and celebrating the victories of social change that have taken place in the last 30 years since he died, in honor of him. I cried the morning the law passed that gay marriage became legal. I lived near West Hartford town hall and there were people lined up. I swear to God, when I saw that it broke my heart because he wasn’t able to witness that, but it was also tears of celebration that people can do that now. I’ve made a point to reach out to every gay person I’ve ever met and make sure that they feel no different from anybody else, because I don’t know if I mentioned that Dave was gay. He never came out. I didn’t mention that earlier. Dave’s biggest challenge was that he was gay and he never came out. He never felt like he could share that with us. We all kind of knew; it was not a surprise when he finally admitted it in his suicide note. That formed a passion in me that I couldn’t not acknowledge people and let them know that they can be out and they can be accepted.”
If you had an opportunity to be present with your brother one more time to deliver some sort of message, some sort of closure to your relationship, what would you say to him?
“It’s just deep gratitude and thanks for helping form who I am today on a lot of levels. I’m living for him, a life that he couldn’t have. That makes me sad, but, man, it’s nothing but gratitude and thanks. I give thanks for his presence in my life and, God damn, I wish he was alive to hear Nick Drake. I wish he was alive today to hear Ray Lamonte. Every time I hear Ray Lamonte, I think, fuck, I wish Dave was here to hear this. Certain artists, certain music that’s come along, it’s just like, oh man, I wish Dave was here to hear this. I wish he was here to see me today, to see what I’m doing, because I think he’d be pretty proud. I think a lot of what I do, I’d be doing with him today.”
Perhaps you are.
“Yeah, you know, I am, I am, yeah, I am on a spiritual level, I am. Yeah, No question, there’s still a connection there.”
Do you have a favorite quote, mantra, song lyric, something that resonates with you that you’d like to share?
“My prayer ... I say this prayer every day: I awaken my higher self, I welcome my teachers, my guides, my angels, my archangels, and my God and Goddess presence, my animal spirits, and give thanks for their presence every step of my path. I am blessed. May we all be blessed. I am loved. May we all be loved. (So it’s a metta.) I am loving and kind. May we all be loving and kind. I am pure light. May we all be pure light. I am enlightened. May we all be enlightened. I am connected. May we all be connected. I am guided. May we all be guided. I am nourished. May we all be nourished. I am healthy in mind, body, and spirit. May we all be healthy. I am truly creative. May we all be creative. I am inspired. May we all be inspired. I am open to receiving. May we all be open to receiving. I am prosperous and abundant. May we all be prosperous and abundant. I am truly, truly (and sometimes there’s multiple, multiple truly’s) truly, truly, truly, truly grateful for all that is. May we all be grateful.”
What does that prayer mean to you?
“Oh my God, it means everything to me. That’s my whole view of life in 20 sentences. I wish for everyone to have what I wish for. The metta of that is so powerful to see the people who are my biggest challenges; I see their faces, my challenges, my loved ones, everyone in my life. I picture them as I go through that, and wish for all to have what I have. Also, there’s no question there; it’s not ‘May I be?’, which often prayers like that are. There’s no ‘may I’; there’s no question. It is a very bold and positive statement of I am loved, I am grateful. There’s no question in my mind that things are true. That’s fucking powerful.”
Absolutely. It’s affirming—the words “I am.” Whatever follows those words, I am, are profound and powerful.
“Yeah, yeah. I actually created a video of that. I recorded it years ago (2004 maybe). I shot a video with those words, same exact words; they haven’t changed in 10 or 12 years. I shot a video of myself doing tai chi on the side of a lake and put those words to my movements, and shared it openly on social media back then. I should probably dredge it up because it’s kind of cool, and it hasn’t changed a bit. I do what I call metta tai chi yogatation. So, it’s meditation, yoga, tai chi, rolled up into one 20-minute session every morning. I couldn’t exist without it. My body couldn’t exist with the tai chi, my muscles need stretching with yoga, and my brain needs to hear those words every day. If I don’t do it, I feel it. I feel it in my body and I feel it in my mind and heart if I don’t do it. It’s very rare that I miss it.”
What advice would you offer to someone reading this who has experienced loss, like you have, or is in a position similar to what your brother may have been experiencing, when they’re uncomfortable with who they are, they’re sort of paddling against the flow of the river?
“My best advice I can give anyone who has challenges is acceptance, is to work with acceptance, acceptance of who you are. It begins with you and acceptance of the people around you who are challenging you, and taking a moment (and this is really hard) to walk in their shoes, to spend time in their head, because they’re challenging you. Their challenges towards you are coming from their deeper challenges, and they’re just lashing out at an easy target, whether it’s family, a boss, or the world. Accepting your situation, accepting the people around you for who they are, and moving on. Growing is so important, and that’s just self-nurturing. That’s working on your own self-worth and accepting, ‘Okay, this sucks, how can I make it better?’
“Right now in this moment, it’s been about a month since the election, and I’ve been dealing with a level of anxiety and fear and sadness that I haven’t felt in my whole life. It’s different. The fear tied in with the sadness and disappointment is smothering. I’ve chosen to deal with that by digging in and doubling down on what I do, which I think has a positive effect on the world, by giving people a chance to drum or by making a film that will make people feel better when they see it. I’m focusing on what I can do and letting go of everything else, and it’s hard. It’s not easy, it’s really hard, because it keeps creeping back in every day. You can’t avoid the headlines. I tried my best to, but I don’t want to bury my head in the sand. I want to have a voice when it comes time, if something comes along that affects me directly. I have healthcare right now for the first time. I was without healthcare for seven years when I was initially self-employed. When the Affordable Care Act came along, it was such a blessing. I ended up having surgery last year. It would have cost me tens of thousands of dollars, and the first thing this administration is talking about doing is throwing away the ACA. That scares the crap out of me, it angers me, and it makes me sad that millions of other people like me could be without healthcare. If stuff like that starts to take place, I will be activated. I have an activist in me that will not accept, that will fight to make things right. I think we’re going from the best president this country has ever had, the most effective president this country has ever had, to probably the worst we’ll ever have. There’s a lot of anxiety around that, and I’m not the only one. I don’t know how to deal with that other than to just double down and do what I do and focus on a creative project that is completely overwhelming me right now, which is a good thing.”
How has it felt to talk about these feelings and experiences with me today?
“It feels great to be able to talk. This is therapy; this is a release that I very strongly believe is an effective way of overcoming our challenges, to just sit down and talk about what we’re going through. To have this opportunity is priceless, it’s absolutely priceless, and for it to be with a person who I’m not paying $75 an hour to. Every time I’ve been to a therapist, I’ve been thinking ‘I can’t believe I’m paying for this.’ So, to have somebody who’s willing to listen, without judgment, and to do it for no other reason than to help me and hopefully other people that hear my story is amazing. It’s awesome. I love that, and I really appreciate this opportunity and I feel better.
“I practice something called co-counseling and have a co-counseling session every week with another person who we share time with, just talking and getting shit off our chest. So, I understand the power of not only talking through this stuff, but also listening. I’ve learned how to shut up and listen and do what you do, and I love that. I needed that, because I was the person always on the other side of the conversation, waiting for my turn to jump in, and that means you’re not really listening. You’re listening from your perspective, but I’ve learned through co-counseling to shut up and really listen and just let that person talk themselves through and come to their own solutions without any judgment, without any butting in and saying ‘oh, well, you should try this.’ You don’t do that, and that’s brilliant.”
