Wakaba Higuchi: Overcoming the tears, setting her heart towards four years later
“Wakaba Bond” was certainly the strongest spy. The 17 year old who missed out on a spot to the PyeongChang Olympics, won the silver medal at the 2018 World Championships, ahead of well-known Olympians. It was a competition at which she who was not selected for the Olympics demonstrated her abilities and sprang a surprise.
For Wakaba Higuchi, this had been a year of tears. This season, what had supported Higuchi was her battle theme, her FS to 007 Skyfall. This programme in which she played the role of Bond was packed with cool movements and difficult content which although she had not done until then, if performed well could get good PCS scores.
“Anyway it was to appeal to the judges. And I practiced many times the choreographic sequence and transitions which had movements that no one else was performing.”
At her first international competition this season, the Lombardia Trophy, with a perfect performance she finished in second place, a mere 0.83 points behind Alina Zagitova.
“Although Zagitova is amazing, she also makes mistakes during practice. I want to go forward without fear.”
Although she was in great form that matched her words, the race for one of the Olympic spots was long. At the Rostelecom Cup of Russia in October she was in 3rd place behind Evgenia Medvedeva and Carolina Kostner, and then in 2nd place behind Alina Zagitova with a point difference of 1.36 points at the Cup of China in November. Her assignments had continued to bring her head to head against strong rivals, but even though she performed well she could not win. And although she qualified for the Grand Prix Final, lack of confidence in the form of “I’m not yet able to win against the top class in the world” sprouted in her heart.
She headed into the GPF and finished in 6th place behind Satoko Miyahara. Although she should be at the top among Japanese ladies, the impression it gave was of losing momentum.
At the Japanese National Championships, she sprained her right ankle during official practice and made one mistake each in her SP and FS. She finished in 4th place, missing out on an Olympic spot and with someone from her team holding her around her shoulders, she left the arena sobbing.
Until then she had never said on her accord that she wanted to take a break from training. But with the injury and in order to re-set her emotions, she told her coach, “I will take a short rest”. It was a two week break at the start of the new year. She confronted herself “Why is it that I cannot perform my best at big events?”
“Firstly starting from the practices I would think that “I absolutely will not fail” and became more strongly conscious about this than I have ever been before. On top of this, more than thinking about results or points, I thought more about properly engaging with the programme.”
She competed at the Challenge Cup in the Netherlands in February, winning the competition with a total score of 203.94 points. When she arrived in Milan in March for the World Championships, Higuchi maintained her confidence.
In the SP that followed, with an unexpected fall she was in 8th place going into the FS. However, she was focused on the FS.
“There were no thoughts in my head of not being able to go to the Olympics, and in any case as this was the last performance of this season, it was not only about the technical side but I thought I would skate putting all my feelings of gratitude towards this programme into the performance.”
With these thoughts, the excessive excitement dissipated.
She performed the FS with everything she had; it was perfect. While raising her arms in victory, tears of joy overflowed from her eyes. With a new season’s best of 145.01 points in the FS, she achieved a total score of 210.90 points. She had splendidly won the silver medal.
“As there were other skaters who made mistakes, this silver medal was an unexpected windfall. I want to work hard so that next time no one can say it was a lucky windfall.”
Although Higuchi said these words humbly, there are only four skaters who scored above 200 points in all their international competitions this season, namely Olympic gold medalist Alina Zagitova, silver medalist Evgenia Medvedeva, bronze medalist Kaetlyn Osmond, and Higuchi. What was awarded to Higuchi was indisputably a medal of honour for her continued hard work behind the scenes.
The day after the competition, she kept the medal in its box, and not taking another look at the box’s contents, set her heart towards four years later.
“First of all I definitely want to include the 3A in my programmes next season. Although I can get the full 3.5 rotations, I am slow in shifting my weight to the right leg and fall. As there are girls in juniors doing quads, maybe four years later it will be an era in which ladies also perform 5 quads.”
Perhaps this was said half jokingly, but in Higuchi’s eyes, it could be said that such a high target could be seen.
“There is still four years. How much can I stretch myself? I have a lot of room for growth.”
Her eyes sparkled as she said these words.
