The Kinjaz: A beginning

The Kinjaz have undoubtedly inspired collectively many Asian American dancers all over the world as made their journey through Youtube as well as dance shows and showcases. 

Mike Song being one of the leaders and co-founders of the group was originally a Kaba Modern member. With his journey with Kaba Modern, he created a project known as ‘Anbu Black Ops’ in 2010 with Anthony Lee. This project later became as the birth of the Kinjaz. . 

Mike Song in particular has made an impact in the dance community as he shared the following video with the world.

Analyzing the video, we can recognize the locking in which he incorporates in his dance. We listen to the music as we see his body move to it. It shows emotion within his moves as the tones of the music turn happy and sad. This classic youtube video gained Mike Song his uprising as it became more and more spread around. In response, he posted this cute little video with his grandma. 

These two Youtube videos fascinated dancers everywhere as at this time Kaba Modern was taking its course to compete on America’s Best Dance Crew.

Mike Song - Trouble

In November of 2013, a category 5 super typhoon named Haiyan [Yolanda] devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, resulting in over 6000 deaths and left millions homeless. We took part in a charity workshop organized at the Movement Lifestyle Studio that donated all of the money to relief aids for those affected. This is the choreography that we taught at the workshop. Before creating, we tried to find out as much as we could about what was going on at the time and, when we had a small grasp of the devastation at hand, all we could do was pray. We prayed about everything, for the victims, for their families, for their future…and it really put things into perspective for our own lives. We hope that this routine serves not as entertainment, but as a message to those out there who have found any amount of suffering from this tragedy that there are people that are praying for you still.
