BUS COMPANY WARNING AFTER DUNDEE MAN BRINGS ON SHOPPING TROLLEY…. A bus company has warned passengers that they are not allowed to bring shopping trolleys on board with them after an incident in Dundee earlier in the week. Xplore Dundee took to its Facebook page to express the message that while shopping is welcome, trolleys full of shopping are not. It occurred after a male passenger was snapped on one of the company’s buses on Monday night with his arm around a trolley with shopping in it. He was sat in a seat normally reserved for parents with prams or elderly passengers. In a message on the company’s Facebook page Xplore Dundee said it was more than happy to take people to the supermarkets every day but drew the line at transporting shopping trolleys. It continued: “There’s nothing worse than pushing your trolley down the wrong aisle...as you may have seen last night. “For the avoidance of doubt: we do not permit shopping trollies about our services (this pint will be clarified with colleagues). Passengers with shopping are, of course, more than welcome to sore bags in luggage spaces as usual.”

SCOTTISH B&B FIRST TO ONLY ACCEPT BIKERS AS OVERNIGHT GUESTS…. They are often maligned visitors who have faced blanket bans from pubs and guest houses across the UK amid claims of anti-social behaviour and leaking modes of transport. But now a Scottish B&B has become the first in the country to only accept bikers as overnight guests. Torguish House, five miles south of Inverness, at the start of the popular NC500 touring route, has been biker-friendly for 11 years, but until now has also welcomed other tourists. Now it has announced plans to become “100 per cent biker” from the beginning of next year. It will refuse bookings from anyone else after finding that bikers treat the 17th-century former manse better than “ordinary” guests do. Ben Moor runs the property with his parents, Angie and Mike Moor, and all are keen bikers. He said bikers had faced prejudice for decades. “Bikers have had a really bad reputation. Going back 20 years, you couldn’t get in a hotel or B&B – as soon as they saw your bike, you would be turned away. Even now, a lot of B&Bs still don’t like bikers. But now, people who ride motorbikes don’t cause any trouble – a lot of them are doctors and lawyers who hang up their suit at the weekend and put on their biking gear. It’s a hobby. “We are trying to go full circle from bikers not being very welcome to only bikers being welcome.” Caroline Warburton, national tourism strategy co-ordinator of the Scottish Tourism Alliance, said: “What Torguish House is planning to do shows a real depth of understanding of their target market, confidence in their business and that all-important focus on delivering a better than ‘good enough’ experience, having in-depth knowledge of their target audience.” Chris Taylor, VisitScotland regional partnerships director, pointed to the tourism agency’s Bikers Welcome scheme, which lists almost 200 businesses. He said: “Bikers are drawn to the Highlands because of its long, quiet, scenic roads and diverse countryside. Torguish House seems to already be a popular stop-off point for bikers, and the fact it is run by bikers will add to the appeal for bike tourists.”

THIEVES STEAL GOLDEN COCKEREL FROM CUPAR BURGH CHAMBERS ROOF…. Thieves have snatched a golden cockerel from the roof of a town’s historic Burgh Chambers. Contractors working on the refurbishment of the landmark in Cupar, Fife, noticed on Thursday that the gold-leaf coated weather vane, which has sat on top of the building for nearly 200 years, had gone The culprits are thought to have scaled scaffolding used by workmen to take the golden bird. Lynn Watt, a director of joinery firm John Smart & Son, which was carrying out the refurbishment work, suggested that the thieves may have thought the item to have been more valuable, as it had just been touched up with new gold leaf. She told a local paper: “We were starting to withdraw the scaffolding a level so we could work further down the dome. “A worker said that he thought something was missing and that’s when we found out it had gone. “I don’t know if they thought it was worth a fortune, but it’s just covered in gold leaf. “It will have historical significance for people in the town though and they will be up in arms.” The weather vane is thought to have been erected in 1823, eight years after the construction of the Burgh Chambers. Proudly perched upon the building’s distinctive dome, which used to house the sheriff court, the cockerel was restored to its traditional place as part of work to transform the complex into holiday apartments. External work at the site began earlier this year as part of a complete overhaul of the complex, which will see its distinctive pink paint removed and original stonework restored. Police are now investigating the theft with a spokesperson saying: “Police in Fife are investigating following reports of theft of a weather vane from the town hall building in Cupar.

‘IDIOTS’ BEAT US WITH STICKS, CLAIM TOUR O’ BORDERS CYCLISTS…. The organiser of the Tour o’ the Borders cycling sportive held over closed roads on Sunday has blasted alleged thugs he blames for spoiling an otherwise-succesful event. According to reports from competitors, the event, sponsored by Tesco Bank, took a terrifying turn for the worse when two men, dressed in tweeds and flat caps, attacked the first tranche of riders with sticks, hitting their heads and their bikes. The pair, believed to be protesting about the closing of the roads at harvest time, had disappeared by the time a police motorbike arrived at the scene – a few hundred metres south of the junction of the A701 and B712 Stobo road south of Broughton. That alleged incident, says event director Neil Dalgleish, marred what was otherwise an excellent day for the 2,0o0 riders who had travelled to take part in the event from as far afield as Australia, Canada, the US, Russia, Belgium and Switzerland. He said: “Tour o’ the Borders was a fantastic success this year, and for once the weather was kind too. “The riders had a fabulous time, and we’ve had countless thanks for the organisation, route quality, scenery and for all the friendly marshals and volunteers. “Our cycling visitors know the Borders is a place they are welcome and where the quality of the cycling and events is second to none, so I think a truly special day was marred by some thugs, some idiots. “Their behaviour is disgusting, and they are a disgrace to the whole of the Borders, let alone their own local communities.

DRINKING ON SCOTS ISLANDS IS ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE IN UK…. THE Scottish islands sell some of the most expensive drinks in the country, a new survey has revealed. The 2018 edition of The Good Pub Guide’s annual survey of national drink prices shows a £1.09-a-pint difference between the cheapest and most expensive in the country. The Scottish Islands is listed as ‘expensive’ with an average of £3.80 a pint. Mainland Scotland is £3.67. Each year the editors of the Guide carry out a national survey of beer prices. This year there has been a considerable increase in the cost of the average pint of beer in Britain – it’s now £3.60, a substantial 13p increase from last year’s £3.47. This was only 1p up on the average in the guide published in 2015. There’s a massive £1.09-a-pint difference between Herefordshire and Yorkshire the joint cheapest counties at £3.31, and the most expensive at £4.40 in Surrey. This marks the very first time in the history of the guide that London isn’t the most expensive county! Another finding of this year’s survey is that Britain’s ever-growing range of pubs brewing their own beer typically costs £3.09 a pint which is 51p less than the national average.
