台湾でジャズ

台湾、特にその中心都市である台北には、ジャズを生で聞かせるクラブがいくつかある。その「台湾ジャズ」の中心にいるのが、Mike Tsengこと「曾增譯」氏だ。彼は台湾の大学でジャズ・ピアノの教授であり、地元では「老師」とさえ呼ばれている、台湾一のジャズ・ピアニストだが、弱冠41歳の「若手」でもある。

大学で彼の講義を受けた、ジャズピアノプレイヤーを目指す生徒は、彼の年齢よりも高い人達を含め、数知れない。東日本大震災当時、日本での台湾の政府の外交部(外務省)にいて、日本に赴任されていた「高官」の方も、Mikeさんの「教え子」である、というのには驚いた。彼は外交官試験に受かって外交部に入る前は、高校教師をしつつジャズピアノをしていたのだ。「定年後はピアノに戻りたい」と言っていて、実際にそうしている。私は当時、日本で「台湾新聞」をやっていたので、取材先として最初は知り合い、今でもLINEの…
