Angelo Leo vs Mike Plania - 1-31-2024
Former super bantamweight champion Angelo Leo (23-1, 11 KOs) has been rebuilding his momentum after losing in his title fight against Steph Fulton back in 2021. He's won 3 straight since. He appears to want to be more of a finisher as he's gone up in weight to featherweight.
Leo will be on Pro Box over on YouTube this Wednesday (April 10) as he is set to face off with Eduardo Baez (23-5-2).

LAS VEGAS — "Magic" Mike Plania had an evening that was nothing short of magical. The Filipino upstart stunned WBO No. 1 bantamweight contender Joshua Greer Jr. via majority decision Tuesday evening from the MGM Grand Conference Center—Grand Ballroom.  Plania (24-1, 12 KOs) knocked down Greer in the first and sixth rounds and prevailed by scores of 94-94, 96-92 and 97-91. Greer (22-2-1, 12 KOs) came on strong in the late rounds, but Plania's lead was too much for him to overcome.  “This win is going to change my life," Plania said. “I thought I could knock him out after the knockdown in the first round, but he was tough and adjusted his strategy. “I took this fight on only three weeks’ notice, but I had faith in God that I could win.”   — Giovani Santillan (26-0, 15 KOs) extended his unbeaten record, but former world champion Antonio DeMarco (33-9-1, 24 KOs) sure didn't make it easy. Santillan, from San Diego, edged DeMarco via 10-round majority decision in the welterweight co-feature (95-95, 96-94 2x). The three judges agreed on only three of the rounds in a fight that some experts had DeMarco pulling out.
“I knew it was a close fight, but I felt like I did enough solid work in there to pull out the win," Santillan said. “He never hurt me at any point in the fight, but he used his experience in there. He’s a former world champion who has been in there with the best of the best. I want to get back in the ring as soon as possible and use this experience to my advantage.” — Bobirzhan Mominov (11-0, 8 KOs) outworked noted spoiler Cameron Krael (17-16-3, 4 KOs) to earn a unanimous decision in a six-round junior middleweight bout. Mominov was deducted a point for hitting behind the head in the sixth round. The scores were 57-56 and 58-55 2x. — In a six-round heavyweight rumble, Hector Perez (7-2, 3 KOs) prevailed via unanimous decision over Juan Torres (5-3-1, 2 KOs). The scores were 60-54 and 59-55 2x.
— Middleweight prospect Nikoloz "The Experiment" Sekhniashvili (6-0, 4 KOs) cruised to a six-round unanimous decision over Detroit native Isiah Jones (8-2, 3 KOs) by scores of 60-54 2x and 59-55.

Romero Duno overwhelms Jonathan Perez in Miami for third straight win

Romero Duno and trainer Osmiri "Moro" Fernandez. Photo by Ryan Songalia 24 Sep by Ryan Songalia MIAMI — Filipino lightweight Romero Duno continued his career rehabilitation on Friday night, stopping the overmatched Jonathan Perez after two rounds at the Manuel Artime Community Center Theater in Miami. There were no knockdowns, and Perez was never seriously hurt, but the difference in punching power was apparent from the opening bell. Duno (24-2, 18 knockouts) stunned Perez (38-28, 30 KOs) in round two with a straight right hand, and then followed up with thudding body punches and clubbing overhands. The 34-year-old Perez, a native of Barranquilla, Colombia who began his career as a flyweight, had little power to hold off the larger man. “I thought it will go long rounds, maybe 7 or 8, to finish the fight. I don’t know why he stopped. Maybe he got hurt,” said Duno, 25, of Cotabato City, Philippines. Filipino lightweight Romero Duno overwhelms Jonathan Perez with power punches in round two, forcing Perez’s corner to throw in the towel after round two in Miami. The win is the third straight for Duno pic.twitter.com/SCW7nstGE8 — Ryan Songalia (@ryansongalia) September 25, 2021 Duno was fighting for the second time in a month, having scored a first round stoppage of Ramon Elizer Esperanza last month, also in Miami. He has been training for the past two months under new head coach Osmiri “Moro” Fernandez, who also trains his Sanman Promotions stablemates Reymart Gaballo, Mike Plania and John Vincent Moralde. Duno has won three straight against lesser opponents since losing by first round knockout to Ryan Garcia in November of 2019. Duno’s promoter, Jim Claude Manangquil of Sanman Promotions, says the plan is to get Duno back into a meaningful fight next. “His confidence is back. We hope to land a bigger fight and have Romero redeem himself,” said Manangquil. Duno says the fight he wants most is a rematch with Garcia, but admits he has a lot to prove before that can make sense. The card, promoted by M&R Promotions, featured a mix of prospects from around the world who make their training homes in Miami. Among them was Siarhei Novikau, a 6’5″ cruiserweight from Belarus who stretched his undefeated record to 7-0 (7 KOs) with a second round stoppage of Kevin Brown (2-16, 1 KO) of Missouri. Novikau, 32, had competed in the 2016 Olympic qualifiers, losing a decision to Great Britain’s Joshua Buatsi. GET THE LATEST ISSUE AT THE RING SHOP (CLICK HERE) or Subscribe

New boxing heroes rise in 2020
#PHnews: New boxing heroes rise in 2020
MANILA – Contact sports, especially fight sports, were among the most heavily affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic during the most of 2020.
But as things slowly got better (at least in some countries), sports also slowly made its way back into the fold in the form of bubbles or, in many combat sport cases, a closed circuit environment in which the pugilists and their cornermen were only limited to strict back-and-forth travels from the hotels to the rings or cages.
Like other fighters, Filipino fight sport athletes still got to show their wares during the year.
Some, however, stood out among the rest.
As we look back to the year that has been, we will also take a look at how these athletes made waves in this whirlwind 366-day ride.
First off: the top Filipino standouts for 2020.
Mike Plania
In a stacked bantamweight division that features current champions Naoya Inoue, Nordine Oubaali, and fellow Filipino John Riel Casimero, Mike Plania was out of the boxing radar until June 17 came.
Plania shocked the world on that fateful day in Las Vegas when he defeated American world title contender Joshua Greer.
Plania introduced himself right at the very first round when he quickly sent Greer to the floor for the knockdown.
Although a one-point deduction slightly hurt his cause, Plania would still go on to take the majority decision victory.
If given a chance, Plania could be primed for a world title shot as soon as 2021.
John Riel Casimero
Speaking of Casimero, he is moving to 2021 in high spirits after knocking out Duke Micah to keep his World Boxing Organization bantamweight title on Sept. 27 (Philippine Time) in Uncasville, Connecticut.
In fact, Casimero, now under MP Promotions, believes he is ready for a title unification shot with either of the two World Boxing Association champs, regular champ Guillermo Rigondeaux and super champ Inoue, who also holds The Ring Magazine and International Boxing Federation belts.
Casimero, during the post-fight press conference against Micah, even called out Inoue with some choice words.
Casimero then responded to a pre-Christmas interview on Rigondeaux by tweeting, "Lets do it. Walang takbuhan; basagan lang tayo ng mukha (Do not run. We will just destroy each other's face)."
While Casimero showed some confidence, what was perceived as cockiness did not actually sit well with some Filipino boxing fans to the point that they even publicly expressed that they would root for whoever he faces next instead.
"Naguguluhan ako sa kanila (They get me puzzled)," Casimero said in the Sept. 29 edition of the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum.
Regardless of who the fans will cheer for, however, he vowed, "Yung laban ko, para sa bayan. Para sa ating lahat (My fight is for the country and all of us)."
Mark Magsayo
Another pro boxer primed for greater heights is Mark Magsayo.
He showed it by outlasting Rigoberto Hermosillo in a 10-round affair in Los Angeles on Oct. 4 (Philippine Time).
While Hermosillo, who replaced original opponent Jose Haro on a three-week notice, brought the fight to Magsayo, the latter's pinpoint boxing gave him the nod of two judges in the split decision win.
Although the bout was marred with some controversies, primarily Judge Rudy Barragan's scorecard that had Magsayo winning, 100-90, despite Hermosillo's efforts that convinced Judge Lou Moret to give him the 96-94 lead (Zachary Young had it 96-94 for Magsayo), this is not expected to hamper Magsayo's bid for the coveted world title in the featherweight ranks.
Eumir Marcial
Eumir Marcial is arguably the most decorated pug right now in Olympic-style boxing.
A proven winner in terms of the medals amassed, many believe the middleweight standout is among the best bets to finally capture the Philippines' first official Olympic gold.
However, the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics to 2021 put the focus on a lingering matter: him turning pro.
It was revealed that some promotions were willing to shell out as much as an eight-digit paycheck just to sign Marcial to a professional contract.
This is somehow anticipated since seeing a Filipino boxer excel outside of the welterweight division is uncommon.
While turning pro should not be a problem since AIBA already allows pros to compete in its sanctioned events like the Olympics and the Southeast Asian Games, the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines saw this, especially the eye-popping offers, as a potential distraction to Marcial's cause, even calling on the promotions to let him box in Tokyo next year.
Eventually, Marcial joined Casimero at MP Promotions, and the Olympic-bound pugilist finally got a taste of pro boxing earlier this month.
Behind a dominating performance, Marcial won a four-round unanimous decision over American Andrew Whitfield with the three judges even giving him a perfect 40.
However, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez has a reminder to the boxing fans: "He's still an amateur."
Reymart Gaballo
It is never too late to snatch a world boxing title, albeit in an interim basis, for 2020.
Reymart Gaballo shocked basically everyone after prevailing against Emmanuel Rodriguez for the interim World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight belt last week in LA.
Many actually anticipated Rodriguez, who previously challenged Inoue for his belts, to get the better of Gaballo, especially that the latter came in on late notice after future boxing legend Nonito Donaire, Rodriguez's original foe, was pulled off due to Covid-19.
It seemed like the case based on the Compubox stats as Rodriguez actually landed the more accurate punches, even coming close to knocking Gaballo down twice.
However, there was no denying that Gaballo showed his upsides by being the more aggressive fighter, even opening a wound on Rodriguez's nose.
Judges Don Trella and John McKaie had it 116-112 and 115-113, respectively, in favor of Gaballo to overrule David Sutherland's 118-110 scorecard for Rodriguez.
While the outcome came in as a surprise for even the Filipino fans, there is no stopping Gaballo from entering the champions' club, and he is primed to unify the interim belt and Oubaali's official WBC belt in the near future once the French pugilist finally gets cleared to fight again after his own battle against Covid-19. (PNA)

Mike Plania scores the upset over Joshua Greer by majority decision with scores of 94-94, 96-92 and 97-91. Greer made a spirited run in the final couple rounds, but couldn’t overcome the knockdowns and early rounds Plania had put in the bank. Rejuvenated Jason Moloney readies himself for Joshua Greer Jr challenge
Tumblr media
Rejuvenated Jason Moloney readies himself for Joshua Greer Jr challenge
Tumblr media
10 Aug by Anson Wainwright Former two-time bantamweight title challenger Jason Moloney will look to bounce back from a loss to The Ring, WBA and IBF titleholder Naoya Inoue last October when he faces Joshua Greer Jr. in a 10-round bout at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday. Moloney, who is rated No. 7 by The Ring at 118 pounds, is highly motivated and physically primed for his return to action. “I see this is a must-win fight for both myself and for Greer,” Moloney (21-2, 18 knockouts) told The Ring. “I’m expecting and I’m prepared for a hard fight. I just believe that I will be too good for Greer. “I’m working very hard and I’m extremely determined to get myself back into the mix for a world title. I want this so bad and I’m not letting anyone stop me.” Moloney believes Greer is a good fighter and respects the American for taking the challenge. “I think I’ve fought and beaten the better opposition and my greatest asset is that I am constantly working and hungry to improve,” he said. “I feel like I keep getting better and I’m looking forward to showing my best performance yet.” The 30-year-old Australian had initially been tabbed to face Greer last April before the pandemic struck. That led to both men going in different directions but they’re now on a collision course. “It’s a fight that I’ve wanted for a long time,” said Moloney. “We have both taken a loss since then and we are both hungry to get back in contention for a world title. “The winner of this fight should be right in line for a title shot and it will be a major setback for the loser. I think the fight has even more on the line this time around.” Looking back, Moloney is disappointed with his performance against Inoue but he has taken positives from that setback. “I feel like I really learned a lot from that fight,” he said. “I really improved as a fighter after my loss to Rodriguez in 2018 and I worked my way back up to the No. 1 position and earned my shot against Inoue. “I didn’t get the result I wanted but I feel like it has made me a much more complete fighter. I’m ready to put in the hard work and I’m determined to do whatever it takes to become world champion.”
Tumblr media
Moloney on the receiving end from pound-for-pound star Naoya Inoue. Photo by Mikey Williams The defeat clearly hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm and belief that he can come again. “I was straight back in the gym after that loss – so hungry and so determined to improve,” stated Moloney. “I feel that I’ve really gone to another level since the Inoue fight and I’m really excited to show that in my performance against Greer. “I feel like a new fighter now and this will be the start of a very successful journey to the top.” Moloney’s manager, Tony Tolj, had hoped to have both Moloney twins fight at home before returning stateside but was unable to make that happen due to circumstances beyond his control. “We worked very hard and had the support of the Victorian government, but there were no exceptions and everyone that was entering Australia was required to do a mandatory two-week quarantine,” said Tolj, who spent close to five months in various quarantines last year while travelling with his fighters. “That was the deciding factor to have the fights revert back to America, which is still great as we consider America our home away from home.” Tolj now hopes that he can help maneuver his fighter into a position to challenge for a world title once again. “I believe in and will always back Jason’s ability and work ethic for him to go straight back into the mix with the elite of boxing,” he said. “The plan is to get Jason back into world title contention. “Bob Arum was so impressed with Jason’s ability and determination against Inoue that he said, ‘I promise Top Rank will get you another opportunity.” With talk of Inoue unifying then moving up in weight we would be ready for whoever Top Rank puts forward.” Greer Jr. turned professional in 2015. He got his big break when he stopped Glen Dezurn (TKO 8) on ShoBox. That win got the attention of Top Rank, who quickly signed the 27-year-old Chicago resident. Among his five subsequent victories, Greer got off the canvas to knock out Giovanni Escaner (KO 8), he edged Nikolai Potapov (MD 12) and got off the floor again to outpoint Antonio Nieves (UD 10). However, Greer Jr. (22-2-2, 12 KOs) did hit a couple of speedbumps, surprisingly losing to unheralded Mike Plania (MD 10) and drawing with Edwin Rodriguez (D 8) in his most recent outing. The ESPN tripleheader will also feature the Joshua Franco-Andrew Moloney junior bantamweight bout, and junior welterweight contender Arnold Barboza faces Antonio Moran. GAB submits sports practice protocols to IATF
#PHnews: GAB submits sports practice protocols to IATF
MANILA – The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has submitted the "new normal" protocols in team practices for three sports to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID).
GAB Chairman Baham Mitra confirmed the development of the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Wednesday night.
"We finished presenting to them by around 3:30 [p.m.]," Mitra said via a phone call.
The three sports that submitted their practice protocols are basketball, football, and boxing.
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), the Philippines Football League (PFL), and the Chooks-To-Go Pilipinas 3x3 have drafted their respective protocols last month in hopes that their member clubs can return to practice very soon, the first step for them to begin or resume their season during the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
Regarding boxing, Mitra bared that GAB itself made the protocols with some additional rules from the Omega and the Elorde Boxing Gyms.
However, he added that the Department of Health (DOH) is still barring GAB from reopening practices for boxing.
"Ayaw pa rin talaga ng DOH eh. Walang go signal (The DOH still does not want that to happen. There is no go signal yet)," Mitra said, although he added that he is still working with the IATF for boxing to return, citing the return of the sport in the United States.
The Philippine boxing community came alive recently when Mike Plania stunned world title contender Josh Greer in a 10-round action in Las Vegas.
Only players, trainers allowed
Meanwhile, Mitra bared that a joint administrative order was made between GAB, DOH, and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to determine the number of people who can be inside the practice facility at a time during a certain lockdown status.
"Sinabihan ako ni [Health] Secretary [Francisco] Duque to meet with the PSC and DOH, so gumawa ng joint administrative order. 'Yun ang sinubmit namin sa TWG (Health Secretary Francisco Duque told me to meet with the PSC and DOH, so a joint administrative order was made. That is what we submitted to the technical working group)," Mitra said.
In the case of provinces under the general community quarantine (GCQ) like Metro Manila and Cavite, only five people, four players and one trainer, can do conditioning drills at a certain time.
This is a little bit stricter than the manpower limit set by the PBA, which is six, four ballers, one trainer, and another member of the team staff.
Mitra revealed that the sixth member in the PBA proposal is a health officer, but he added, "Yung lima na yun, pwede na yun -- apat na player, isang coach o isang trainer. 'Yung health officer does not have to be in the playing court. Nasa labas ka lang. I-check mo lang yung mga players kung wala silang lagnat (Those five people -- four players and one coach or one trainer -- are already enough. The health officer does not have to be in the playing court. You should just be outdoors. Just check if the players do not have a fever)."
However, primarily in the case of football, Mitra said that GAB would be more lenient in terms of people present on the field in provinces under the lightest lockdown, the modified GCQ (MGCQ), allowing 10 people including the trainer at a certain time.
The city of Biñan, the home of PFL side Stallion Laguna, has already shifted to MGCQ along with the rest of the province, paving the way for the club to return to training once the protocols have been approved.
Meanwhile, despite Carmona -- and the entire Cavite -- still being under the classic GCQ, the player-trainer limit was also set for the said town in anticipation that the entire province will be placed under MGCQ very soon.
PFF president Nonong Araneta bared that the entire PFL season, should it pushes through, may only take place behind closed doors at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona.
On whether Stallion Laguna can still hold home matches at the Biñan Football Stadium this year remains unknown since the pitch is just near the Alonte Sports Arena, which is used as a treatment facility for Covid-19 patients.
Araneta said he is proposing that the PFF National Training Center will be the Azkals' home for their upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and AFF Suzuki Cup matches with the Rizal Memorial Stadium here being close to the Rizal Memorial Coliseum and the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, two arenas that are also being used as Covid-19 treatment facilities.
Mitra said that up to 20 people can be allowed in a training hall once all the restrictions have been lifted.
One-hour limit
Mitra then bared that only one hour may be allotted for a certain set of players and trainers to do their workouts with a 30-minute interval for cleaning the facility.
"Pasok sila nang alas-otso hanggang alas-nuwebe [ng umaga]. Linis. Then [by] 9:30, pasok ng isang team. [By] 10:30, tapos na 'yan. Eleven [a.m.] naman ang kasunod, parang ganun ba (They may enter the practice facility from 8 to 9 in the morning. Then they can clean the hall. Then by 9:30, one group can do their practices. They should be done by 10:30. The next group can come by 11 a.m. It somehow looks like that)," he said.
The total time one team may utilize for practice is expected to become shorter once MGCQ will be in place in Metro Manila and Cavite.
The TWG, according to Mitra, will convene once all the industries have made their pitches regarding their Covid-19 protocols.
"Magde-deliberate sila kung ano ang ipapasok nila sa IATF meeting (They will deliberate on what proposals will be presented in the IATF meeting)," he quipped.
The IATF will hold a meeting on Thursday, and it may decide on whether it will approve the practice protocols or not.
Whatever happens, though, Mitra said that GAB would abide by the IATF's rules. (PNA)
