Climate changes can significantly impact various infectious agents, such as vector-borne, water-borne, and food-borne pathogens. The healthcare sector bears the brunt of the aftermath effects of flooding.
The emergence of Cyclone Michaung has highlighted the necessity for public health interventions across multiple city areas to mitigate the risk of potential disease outbreaks.
Rela Hospital's medical teams have been actively on the ground this week in relief camps, addressing medical issues in flood-affected areas of Chennai. Mobile medical units have been to several hamlets in Athipet Pudhunagar, Athipettu, and the Ennore region, conducting health check camps that test vital checks, doctor consultations and prescribe basic medications.
These teams have been empathetic and compassionate, providing exemplary patient care. The health camps spanned three days across seven different hamlets/locations.
This initiative has been spearheaded by Rela Hospitals as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) and has positively impacted over 800 families. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the hospital for their invaluable and unwavering support.

Cyclone Michaung: 8 Health Risks to Be Aware Of During Flooding And Heavy Rainfall
The impact of Michaung, including the inundation of 25 villages, affected about 40 lakh people from 194 villages and two towns, according to data given by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). When towns, cities, neighborhoods, and apartments are severely flooded, there are numerous health hazards associated with flood-like conditions. Monsoons bring with them a variety of fungi, germs, damp air, and other things. During floods, sewage and toxic water combine to form a mixture that, regrettably, many people must wade through in order to reach dry land. This can result in a number of illnesses. Respiratory infections :Flood-related exposure to damp and moldy conditions can raise the risk of respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, asthma, and bronchitis. Typhoid fever: Is caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi. As the bacteria infiltrate the body, it creates symptoms such as persistent fever, headache, constipation, nausea, and so on. It could persist up to 14 days. It could be spread by contaminated food and water due to poor sanitation. Cholera: Is an acute diarrheic sickness caused by swallowing food or water infected with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, according to the World Health Organization. It causes diarrheas' and vomiting. Mental health problems: The stress of losing homes, belongings, and loved ones can result in long-term mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Malaria: Plasmodium parasites can produce fatal infections. The first symptoms include a fever, chills, sweats, nausea, and body aches. Depending on the disease's intensity, malaria can linger anywhere from seven to thirty days. Dengue: A mosquito bite can result in the viral virus known as dengue. A few of the main signs of the fever are a high temperature, eye pain, and a strong headache. It might continue for a week or so. Yellow fever: The virus that causes it, often referred to as the flavivirus, is contracted through a mosquito bite. Among the main symptoms are fever, nausea, back discomfort, and abdominal pain. Hypothermia: In flood-like conditions, this is a highly prevalent occurrence in young people and the elderly. This medical disease happens when the body rapidly loses heat before it can generate new. While maintaining sanitisation a crisis like this is challenging. It is always best to be alert, take required precautions, and seek good guidance from a health professional.

Dear Michi,
Farewell to thee. Rest in peace,
In the Deep sea.
You came in slow
A might that - Made us bow.
Humbled by the raging storm
Reminding us of all our wrong
Washing away the mess we did
Farewell to thee we bid.
Dear Michi,
Hope is alive...We'll pick ourselves up
And move ahead...!!!
There is still time to correct.
Most of all, Let's remember to NOT forget.
Deepa Sam
5th Dec. 2023, Cyclone Michaung.

Cyclone Michaung Ravages Andhra Pradesh: Destruction and Relief Efforts Underway
The severe cyclonic storm Michaung struck Andhra Pradesh, wreaking havoc across six coastal districts, devastating crops and disrupting communication networks. Gusty winds of 90-110 kmph battered the coastline, causing significant damage.
Tumblr media
Torrential rains pounded Chittoor, Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur, Bapatla, and Krishna districts, with warnings of more downpours in coastal and Rayalaseema regions. Uprooted trees and electric poles cluttered the coastal areas, prompting relief teams into action.
Bapatla alone deployed 50 special teams for cyclone relief measures. Over 1,350 people were relocated to 27 relief camps as a precaution. Authorities are assessing damage in severely affected villages while monitoring crop devastation.
Sea turbulence reached alarming levels, causing high waves in Suryalanka and surges in Bapatla, Repalle, and Nizampatnam. Tragically, a police constable lost his life due to a fallen tree in Kadapa district.
Reports of extensive agricultural damage surfaced in multiple districts, urging Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to order relief measures. Over 9,500 people found shelter in 211 relief camps, emphasizing the need for swift power restoration and aid distribution.
The CM instructed officials to ensure minimal loss of life and property, demanding prompt relief aid and damage assessment through village volunteers. The state stands united in efforts to mitigate the devastating impact of Cyclone Michaung.

After Heavy Damage In Tamil Nadu And Andhra, Cyclone Michaung Weakens
Cyclone Michaung made landfall yesterday following heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh and flooding in Chennai. The severe cyclonic storm that originated in the Bay of Bengal weakened into a depression, the India Meteorological Department said.
Chennai came to a standstill following heavy rain and flooding. Seventeen people died in the city due to rain-related incidents, making it one of the worst affected places due to the cyclone.
As many as ten incidents of drowning and electrocution have been reported and medical assistance has been provided, Greater Chennai Police said.
Tumblr media
DMK MP Kanimozhi said the Tamil Nadu government is prepared to deal with the situation in a better manner than in 2015 when incessant rains caused flooding in Chennai.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the ₹ 4,000 crore investment in stormwater drains played a crucial role in minimizing the impact of what he called the “47-year high rainfall”.
Food and other relief materials are being airdropped in Chennai and water is being pumped out from several low-lying areas that are flooded, DR J Radhakrishnan, Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation said.
Additional teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been called in and 300 boats have been deployed in low-lying areas. Around 5,000 government workers from other districts will join the relief efforts, Dr J Radhakrishnan said.
The cyclone weakened into a depression and is moving northwards in Andhra Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department said.
It is expected to move northwards in Andhra Pradesh and further weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area in the next six hours.
Schools and colleges were ordered to remain shut today in Chennai and an 80 per cent power supply has been restored in the city. Many residents in the city grappled with power cuts and no mobile connectivity.
Traffic has been restored on several key roads including; Kamarajal Sarai, Cathedral, Pondy Bazaar, Dams, RK Salai and Anna Salai Road. The Greater Chennai police said water logging is being removed from roads and traffic is slow.
