Nicholas Brothers: Stormy Weather
Nicholas Brothers: Stormy Weather
It’s opening day at the Tribeca Festival (June 8-19) and I want to take the occasion to plug one film they’re showing in particular. I don’t usually get excited about modern movie shorts but I think you’ll instantly understand why this one jumped out at me (see what I did there?). I WANNA PLAY THE MIDWAY.mov from Rick Berlin on Vimeo.
The Rat died, leaving only one true honest home for dispossessed musicians in Boston - THE MIDWAY CAFE. 7 nights a week and sometimes afternoons (offering up the foulest green room since CBGB’s). Dyke Night and Hippie Hour fill the joint. Musical barflies, midnight cowboys, anything goes punk chixen, hillbillies, metal kids, electronica, painted ladies and ladyboys, shoe gazing twitchy rockers and comedians all found space on that stage. Still do, even as the virus rampages. Proud owner, never-say-die Jay Balerna, has kept the place afloat for decades. A miracle on Washington Street. This song is a tribute to the place, and a thank you to Jay for his early and continuing support of the #JamaicaPlainMusicFestival, the performance fundraisers that previewed bands that played the Fest and raised us a chunk of money. It is also where #JohnCaseysBarWars (my favorite night of any year) revs up. Hat’s off to all who love The Midway. Kudos to Anthony Sahadeo and Billy Squire for still shots and live footage of JCBW and others I snatched from other nights and years past.
Special thanks to all 65 Hallelujah ‘oi-Chorus-ters’!!
