So back in 2020 I started law school. I moved back to Philadelphia in the midst of a global pandemic (after moving back to my parents house for the first few months of COVID) and was going a little stir crazy living all alone. So within the first month of school, I made a thread of screen grabs from IASIP that, in some way or another, correlate with American court decisions. In honor of season 16 correlating with me studying for the bar exam, here is that SAME tread three years later.
(Disclaimer: these are merely observations I made, this should not be construed as legal advice in any compacity).

Expert team links forward operating bases, battle space
Tumblr media
QALAT, Afghanistan - Forward operating bases and combat outposts exist in austere environments. Facilities and services are limited and missions are often crucial. Teams would remain isolated from their parent units if not for one support function--Communications.
Provincial Reconstruction Team Zabul, a forward deployed team tasked to mentor key leaders in rural Afghanistan, relies upon a small team of Communications experts to keep them connected to the rest of the battle space.
“Like right now,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Tylian Goss, PRT Zabul operations non-commissioned officer in charge, as he answered a radio call from a unit on a mission. “They’re about to blow an Improvised Explosive Device in place and I have to let everybody know.”
Goss turned from his workstation in the PRT’s Tactical Operations Center, used the FOB Giant Voice system, and announced, “Attention on the FOB, attention on the FOB, there will be a controlled detonation.”
Quickly and easily, important data from across the battle space was relayed from one geographically separated part of the team to another, all through the use of the PRT’s communications tools.
“We bring capabilities to place conversations, intelligence and information assets from anywhere in the world into one room, even in unstable southern Afghanistan,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Palmore, Provincial Reconstruction Team Zabul communications officer. “We … provide the real-time link from the policy and decision makers stateside to the war fighters on the ground in Afghanistan.”
The Communications team is comprised of a small group of service members from the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army National Guard. The diverse team works together to maintain the ties between PRT Zabul and the rest of the battle space, which is not without challenges.
“Not having easy access to additional parts needed, random power outages and the environment are big things,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joel Crowder, PRT Zabul communications non-commissioned officer in charge. “Being in a job where things need to be done yesterday can be very difficult because sometimes you get a need or mission critical thing that you may need to replace or add to one of the FOBs and it may take anywhere from a couple of months, to almost your whole time here at the PRT to get that part in, sometimes not even then.”
Despite the difficult acquisition process for resources and an environment seemingly built to break down technology, the team perseveres. The support required of PRT Zabul’s Communications team means that they must overcome obstacles while also acting as subject matter experts in a variety of fields or the PRT mission will fail.
“We have to juggle and support anything from maintenance to being a technical advisor,” said Crowder. “[We] provide communications support for radio, computer, internet, and all kinds of communications in vehicles, as well as for the Tactical Operations Center.”
The TOC represents the heartbeat of the PRT’s mission to bring stability to Zabul province through governance, reconstruction, and development. The coordination for every mission that the PRT conducts starts and ends at the TOC, but without communications support, none of it would be possible.
“We provide the communications capability for the TOC,” said U.S. Army Spc. Brianna Whaley, 422nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion information systems operator. “Our support helps them track missions faster and improves their ability to talk to higher headquarters and other units, compared to previous wars. We make them able to do their job faster.”
In a warzone, situations can change quickly. The members of PRT Zabul rely on their TOC to be responsive to those changes in a timely manner, because sometimes a few minutes or seconds can determine mission success.
“Connectivity speeds up the communication process,” U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jared Shavrnoch, PRT Zabul communications technician, said. “People use it as a resource, it’s a morale booster, and people cannot complete the mission without it.”
Communications experts at PRT Zabul maintain connectivity, despite challenging conditions, because they must.
“It is a critical link that brings the world to our fingerprints, even at a remote FOB in south-central Asia,” Palmore said.

Facebook announces 20 members of the Oversight Board
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/facebook-announces-20-members-of-the-oversight-board/
Facebook announces 20 members of the Oversight Board
NEW DELHI: Two years after first proposing an independent body to address some of the most pressing content moderation matters social media giant Facebook announced on Wednesday its first 20 board members of the Oversight Board, including Sudhir Krishnaswamy, vice chancellor of the National Law School of India University.
Brent Harris, Facebook’s director of governance and global affairs had stated in January that the company has been laying the groundwork for a new independent organisation, the Oversight Board, to review cases and make binding content decisions. In a blog post, the Oversight Board on its website stated that when it begins hearing cases later this year, users will be able to appeal to the board in cases where Facebook or Instagram have removed their content but over the following months, it will add the opportunity to review appeals from users who want Facebook to remove content.
Apart from Krishnaswamy, the 20 new members of Facebook’s oversight board include members like Michael McConnell, director of the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School and a former judge of the US Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman from Yemen, Alan Rusbridger, former editor in chief of The Guardian, and Emi Palmor, former director general of the Israeli ministry of justice.
Co chairs of the board include Catalina Botero-Marino, dean of the Universidad de los Andes Faculty of Law in Colombia and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former prime minister of Denmark.
“We know our work is not done. We share the board’s decision to grow overtime and include additional types of content before the board. We will respond quickly and transparently to policy guidance put forth by the board,” Harris said in a press briefing for journalists on Wednesday.
Facebook established a $ 130 million trust for the Oversight Board, which funds all operations and cannot be revoked and has maintained that its board members will make judgements free from influence or interference.
The board said all its board members are independent of Facebook and all other social media companies and that it can also review content referred to it by Facebook.
“This could include many significant types of decisions including content on Facebook or Instagram, on advertising or Groups. The board will also be able to make policy recommendations to Facebook based on our case decisions,” it stated.
The board also said it will take final and binding decisions on whether specific content should be allowed or removed from Facebook and Instagram and that Facebook must implement its decisions, unless implementation could violate the law.
But, some global media reports have previously questioned the Oversight Board’s possibly limited ambit of operations to start with, and have stated that it may not able to take timely calls on matters concerning misinformation and abuse plaguing the platform as the company had said it expects the board to come to a case decision and for Facebook to have acted on that decision in approximately 90 days.
“The Board will review whether content is consistent with Facebook and Instagram’s policies and values, as well as a commitment to upholding freedom of expression within the framework of international norms of human rights. We will make decisions based on these principles, and the impact on users and society, without regard to Facebook’s economic, political or reputational interests,” the board stated.

Michael Dreeben: Smart aleck and practical jokester
Nicole Saharsky is co-head of Mayer Brown’s Supreme Court & Appellate Practice. She served for 10 years as an Assistant to the Solicitor General in the U.S. Department of Justice.
Look, I know I’m supposed to tell you about how Michael Dreeben is the world’s greatest lawyer. But I’m not going to do that. Anyone who has seen Michael argue a case knows how good he is. Instead, I want to tell you something most people don’t know: Michael Dreeben is hilarious.
To be clear: I don’t want to give you the impression that Michael spent his time in the SG’s Office telling jokes and having fun. Michael worked relentlessly, writing recommendations, giving advice, editing briefs and arguing cases. He edited briefs in opposition while sitting at counsel table waiting for arguments to start, and while on a spin bike at the gym. So most of the time, Michael was all business. But once in a while …
One day many years ago, I was typing in Michael’s edits to our merits brief in Missouri v. McNeely, No. 11-1425. That was the case about whether the police could take a blood sample from a drunk driver without a warrant, and the Supreme Court said no. (That case is not to be confused with Mitchell v. Wisconsin, No. 18-6210, in which the Supreme Court said yes to seemingly the same question.)
Anyway, as part of the brief, we had a section addressing whether a blood draw is a significant Fourth Amendment intrusion. We decided to give examples of when people have their blood drawn in everyday life, to show that it is a relatively common procedure. The brief read:
Although a blood test involves a bodily intrusion, this Court has characterized it as minimal and commonplace. Blood tests are routinely performed during annual physical examinations, or to obtain a marriage license or enter the armed forces.
Immediately following that, Michael added another sentence:
Vampires also commonly take blood in our society.
I dutifully typed in Michael’s edit, then stopped short – vampires? It took me a minute to realize that Michael was a making a joke.
Let me give you another example. Michael, Joe Palmore and I worked together on two Supreme Court cases about drug-sniffing dogs – Florida v. Harris, No. 11-817, and Florida v. Jardines, No. 11-564. The cases were argued on the same day, and we won one (Harris) and lost the other (Jardines). The day after the loss, I came into the office and saw a poster up on my door, apparently advertising a forthcoming protest at the Supreme Court. It read:
DOGS FOR JUSTICE
Supreme Court Unfair to Law Enforcement Canines
Please join us for a rally on the Supreme Court plaza to protest Florida v. Jardines
Let Our People Work!
The poster had a full-color picture of Franky, the dog whose work was at issue in Jardines. At the bottom it said: “Paid for by Dogs For Justice. Our mottos: ‘Two Feet Good, Four Paws Better.’; ‘The Nose Knows.’ ” Yes, that was all Michael.
I’ll give you one more. Some of you may be familiar with Bond v. United States, No. 09-1227, a case about a woman who attempted to poison a romantic rival with toxic chemicals and (appropriately) was charged with a serious crime. At oral argument in the case, Justice Alito expressed concern that the government’s interpretation of the underlying statute was too broad. He asked Michael:
Suppose that Petitioner in this case decided to retaliate against her former friend by pouring a bottle of vinegar in the friend’s goldfish bowl. As I read the statute, that would be a violation of the statute, potentially punishable by life imprisonment, wouldn’t it?
Later that week, a strange item appeared in the SG’s Office refrigerator. It was a bottle of vinegar, labeled as follows:
Caution!
Not for use on goldfish.
Prohibited Chemical Weapon under Federal Law, 18 U.S.C. 229
The label had a color picture of a goldfish swimming in a bowl, which was a nice touch. It was very funny, and its source was clear – definitely Michael.
Do I have more stories like this? Yes. Am I going to tell them to you? No, definitely not.
