AB 109: COOKIN’ THE BOOKS FOR JERRY BROWN
(FEBRUARY 28, 2017) Steve Owen. Jose “Gil” Vega. Lesley Zerebny. Keith Boyer.
Four law enforcement officers protecting Southern California – all murdered by convicted felons that benefited from the leniency of Assembly Bill 109.
“The system is now set up so it is very difficult to get sent back to (state) prison for anything,“ said Eric Leonard, an investigative reporter with KFI radio in Los Angeles.
In a sane world, felons violating parole would be sent back to Pelican Bay, San Quentin, or one of the other 33 state prisons constructed to hold such overt threats to society.
But in Jerry Brown’s California, politicians have created a climate where outlaws game the system, official data is meaningless, and cops end up dead.
(Jerry Brown at a 2010 rally in Oakland, CA. Photo: Steve Rhodes/creative commons)
AB109 is a way for Governor Brown to fudge numbers.
The State Legislature passed the law in 2011 without any Republican votes.
Democrats in Sacramento call it “realignment,” but in reality, AB 109 is a shell game that lets Brown dump state inmates into the county system. That way, the governor gets to tell people he’s reducing the state’s prison population.
“He’s playing Russian roulette with the public,” Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele foreshadowed soon after AB 109 took effect.
Los Angeles Times, February 21, 2017:
“We’re putting people back on the street that aren’t ready to be back on the street,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said. He said the county jail system he runs, the largest in the nation, has become a “default state prison.”
Brown’s realignment racket might be a good way for him to manipulate statistics, but law enforcement agrees it’s bad for public safety.
For years, police organizations warned that the bill would result in high-risk offenders roaming free - just like the three gangbangers who killed four California cops in the past five months.
Trenton Trevon Lovell, 27, shot Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Owen in the face, then stood over his body and unloaded four more rounds – described as an “execution-style” death by the DA’s office.
A gang member with a long rap sheet, Lovell racked up 11 arrests and spent two stints in the state pen for felony convictions.
Associated Press, October 14, 2016:
Lovell has been on parole since 2014, when he was freed from prison after serving roughly five years of a six-year sentence for robbing a university community safety officer at gunpoint.
Prior to realignment (AB 109), Lovell could have gone back to (state) prison as a parole violator. (In 2015) he pleaded no contest to driving under the influence and a county judge sentenced him to 13 days in jail and three years’ probation.
Since the passage of AB109, parole violators are no longer returned to state prison.
“It curtailed the power of parole agents (paid by the state) to monitor and punish parolees,” wrote Eric Siddall, Vice President of the Association of Los Angeles District Attorneys.
That means ex-convicts like Lovell can now receive lighter supervision, like probation, for violating parole rules.
“Guess who pays for probation? The county. Guess who has next to no expertise in dealing with harden criminals? Probation,” Siddall continued.
Palm Springs Police Officers Jose “Gil” Vega and Lesley Zerebny were ambushed and killed by John Hernandez Felix, 26, during a 12-hour standoff last fall.
Felix, who has been described by local media as “a known member of the Varrio Las Palmas gang,” allegedly expressed a desire to kill police before firing armor-piercing bullets at the officers with an AR-15.
Desert Sun, October 14, 2016:
In September 2009, police say Felix and another man attempted to kill a member of a rival gang in a drive-by shooting.
Felix was charged with attempted murder but pleaded down to assault with a firearm, ultimately serving 18 months of a four-year prison term.
But before being discharged from parole in May 2015, Felix was placed on probation by the county, twice, and pled guilty to another infraction.
The Press-Enterprise, October 9, 2016:
(Felix) got in trouble again in December 2012 when he was accused of possession of an opium pipe. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 76 days in jail, fined $570 and required to not use illegal drugs among the terms of his probation, which expired this August.
And in 2014 he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, the court records show. He was sentenced to 35 days in custody and 34 days in a work-release program, and was ordered to pay a fine of $1,730 and complete a DUI first-offender program, but court records say he failed to appear for the work-release and DUI programs. He remains on probation in that case.
The California Justice Legal Foundation, whose Board of Trustees includes former Gov. Pete Wilson, notes that Felix “would have been eligible for more time in prison or jail” before AB 109.
Michael Christopher Mejia, 26, is a member of the Winter Gardens street gang and he’s got tattoos on his face to prove it.
Thanks to AB 109, the two-time felon was never on parole after leaving state prison last April.
Orange County Register, February 22, 2017:
(Mejia) was on county probation under Assembly Bill 109 when he allegedly shot and killed (Whittier PD Officer) Boyer…and had been arrested multiple times in recent months for violating his probation.
If Mejia had been returned to state prison for violating parole rather getting slapped on the wrist for breaching probation, he might not have been in a position to kill Officer Boyer on February 20.
“It is irresponsible to ignore the fact that the state has, over the last decade, wiped its hands of its public safety obligations and shifted the burden of monitoring harden criminals to probation - an organization not equipped to deal with the Mejia’s of the world,” Siddall wrote.
In a statement to KCAL news, Boyer’s cousin called out Gov. Brown.
Boyer’s family invited Brown to accompany them to the funeral later this week to witness the ramifications of his prison reform policies.
Memorial Services will take place on Friday, March 3rd, at 10:00 AM at the Calvary Chapel in Downey. There will also be a public viewing on Thursday, March 2nd, from 6:30pm-9pm at Whittier Area Community Church.

Twins Edge O’s Late In Sarasota!
Twins 7 Orioles 6 W-Harper (1-0) L-Kline (0-2) SV-Comer (1)
The Minnesota Twins had their third and final split-squad of the spring today. Half of the team headed up to Sarasota to play the Baltimore Orioles today. The Twins were able to rally late and beat the O’s at Ed Smith Stadium. Baltimore got the scoring started in the first inning this afternoon. Cedric Mullins drilled a Chase De Jong fastball out to right for a solo blast. This put the Orioles up 1-0 after an inning of play. The Twins would come right back in the third inning as Tomas Telis singled with one out. Michael Reed reached on an infield single and the Twins had two runners on. With two outs, Willians Astudillo lined a run-scoring single to left and the game was tied at one. The Orioles would answer in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Davis led-off with a walk and Renato Nunez singled. Austin Hayes plated a run with a double to left and Jace Peterson hit an RBI groundout. The Orioles had a 3-1 lead after four innings of play. The Twins would respond in the top of the fifth. Tomas Telis hit a ground-rule double to left. Michael Reed plated him with a single to left. Ehire Adrianza kept the chain moving with a single. Later in the inning, Jake Cave delivered a two-run double to right and the Twins had a 4-3 lead. The Orioles came right back with singles by Eric Young Jr. and Chris Davis. With two outs, Christopher Bostick hit a run-scoring single to third and the game was tied at four. The Twins would break the tie in the sixth. Ronald Torreyes drilled a Pedro Araujo offering out to left for a solo blast. this put the Twins on top, but not for long. Austin Hays walked to start the bottom of the sixth. The next batter, Jace Peterson smacked a Tyler Duffey fastball out to right for a two-run blast. Baltimore regained a one-run lead after six frames. Michael Reed started another rally with a single to start the seventh. Willians Astudillo singled and Jake Cave walked to load up the bases. Tyler Austin hit an RBI single to left and the game was tied at six. The Twins would break the tie again in the ninth. Drew Maggi led-off with a double and Jacob Pearson singled him home. Minnesota led 7-6 and Kevin Comer had a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off the game. The Twins got a close win in Sarasota today.
-Final Thoughts- Chase De Jong looked good in his start today. He went three innings and allowed a run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts. Adalberto Mejia was charged with three runs in two innings of work. Tyler Duffey gave up two more runs in the sixth. Ryan Eades fanned two in a 1-2-3 seventh, Ryne Harper got in and out of trouble in the eighth, and Ryan Comer picked up the save in a perfect ninth. Michael Reed led the team with three hits on the day. Willians Astudillo and Tomas Telis had two hits each. The team hit 5-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Ryne Harper hasn’t allowed a run in seven innings now and had 10 strikeouts total. He has been having a great spring. Tomorrow, the Orioles come down to Fort Myers to play the Twins.

Introducing | NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program Recipients and Finalists
NYFA has awarded $661,000 to 98 New York State artists working in the categories of Architecture/Environmental Structures/Design, Choreography, Music/Sound, Photography, and Playwriting/Screenwriting.
New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) has announced the recipients and finalists of the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program, which it has administered for the past 33 years with leadership support from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). The organization has awarded a total of $661,000 to 98 artists (including three collaborations) whose ages range from 25-76 years throughout New York State in the following disciplines: Architecture/Environmental Structures/Design, Choreography, Music/Sound, Photography, and Playwriting/Screenwriting. Fifteen finalists, who do not receive a cash award but benefit from a range of other NYFA services, were also announced. A complete list of the Fellows and Finalists follows.
The NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program makes unrestricted cash grants of $7,000 to artists working in 15 disciplines, awarding five per year on a triennial basis. The program is highly competitive, and this year’s recipients and finalists were selected by discipline-specific peer panels from an applicant pool of 2,542. Since it was launched in 1985, the program has awarded over $31 million to more than 5,000 artists. This year, thanks to the generous support of photography nonprofit Joy of Giving Something, NYFA was able to award an additional five Fellowships in Photography, which has the largest application pool of any Fellowship category.
“We are grateful to NYSCA for this annual opportunity to provide nearly 100 artists from New York State with unrestricted cash grants,” said Michael L. Royce, Executive Director, NYFA. “What’s most exciting is that the Fellowship impacts artists of all disciplines and career stages and that these artists are being recognized by a jury of their peers. Beyond the financial aspect, it empowers them to keep creating and exploring new possibilities in their work.”
New York State Council on the Arts Executive Director Mara Manus described how the program makes New York communities more vibrant: “The NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship recognizes that artists of all disciplines, backgrounds, ages, and career stages make vital contributions to New York’s creative culture. Over the past 33 years, the Artist Fellowship has been a launching pad and a critical source of support for artists whose work helps build healthy communities in all regions of the state.”
On receiving a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Playwriting/Screenwriting, Brooklyn-based Nabil Viñas said: “It is a deeply moving honor to be recognized by NYSCA/NYFA. I took up screenwriting out of necessity, as it became clear that the voices and stories from my life would not appear in works by others. This fellowship tells me our stories matter, and that my voice is worth hearing.”
For Ben Altman, a Fellow in Architecture/Environmental Structures/Design from Danby, NY, the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship represents another facet of support from NYFA: “NYFA has informed my artistic practice throughout my 12 years in Upstate New York, providing professional development, fiscal sponsorship, grant application support, workshops, critique, and timely advice. To be awarded a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship is as much a tribute to those inputs as it is an important and very welcome recognition of the work NYFA’s support has helped me to produce.”
To Veena Chandra, a Fellow in Music/Sound from Latham, NY, the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship empowers her to “continue to create, promote, and preserve” musical tradition. “I feel blessed to have been playing Indian sitar music for the last 63 years. I am so grateful to my father, who created an environment for me to learn this beautiful music and taught me from the very beginning of my life. To be recognized for my work in performing and preserving Indian Classical music means a lot to me, especially at this point in my career,” she noted.

Published: February 04, 2020
NEW YORK CITY (Feb. 4, 2020) — Shakur Stevenson, the 22-year-old phenom on the cusp of pound-for-pound greatness, will make the first defense of his WBO featherweight world title Saturday, March 14, against three-time world title challenger Miguel “Escorpión Marriaga at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. Three days later, Irish featherweight Michael “Mick” Conlan will make his annual St. Patrick’s Day pilgrimage at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in a 10-rounder against hard-charging Colombian veteran Belmar Preciado. The Stevenson-Marriaga co-feature will see former junior featherweight world champion Jessie Magdaleno fight the unbeaten Sakaria Lukas in a 10-round featherweight showdown. Stevenson-Marriaga and Magdaleno-Lukas will be televised LIVE on ESPN and ESPN Deportes beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT. Conlan-Preciado and a 10-round female super featherweight showdown between the unbeaten Mikaela Mayer and former featherweight world champion Melissa Hernandez will stream live in English and Spanish on ESPN+ beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Promoted by Top Rank, tickets for the Stevenson-Marriaga and Conlan-Preciado cards are priced at $200, $100, $70, $40 and $30 (not including applicable fees) and go on sale Friday, Feb. 7 at 12 p.m. ET. Tickets can be purchased at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster charge by phone (866-858-0008) and online at www.ticketmaster.com or www.MSG.com. For a limited time, when purchasing a ticket online to one of these cards, you will then be given the option to purchase discounted tickets to the other event. “What a great two nights of boxing on ESPN and ESPN+, as we get to see Shakur Stevenson defend his title against the big-punching Marriaga and Mick Conlan continue one of boxing’s great traditions,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “New York is going to turn out in force to watch two of boxing’s great young stars.” Stevenson (13-0, 7 KOs), the pride of “Brick City”, Newark, N.J., was the first male boxer from the 2016 Rio Olympics to win a professional world title. Last October, he bested Joet Gonzalez via unanimous decision to win the vacant WBO featherweight world title. The Gonzalez win punctuated a banner year for the Olympic silver medalist, who also defeated former world title challenger Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz on the Terence Crawford-Amir Khan PPV undercard. Last July, he headlined an ESPN telecast in front of an adoring hometown crowd of more than 5,000 at Prudential Center, knocking out Alberto Guevara in three rounds. “We've been trying to make this fight with Miguel Marriaga for a long time now,” Stevenson said. “I wanted a strong opponent for my first title defense. He's been in the ring with multiple world champions, and I am ready to prove that I am the best featherweight in the world. This is my fourth fight at Madison Square Garden, but my first as a world champion, and it will be my best performance yet. I know all of my East Coast fans will come out and support on March 14.” Marriaga (29-3, 25 KOs), one of the division’s hardest punchers, is hoping the fourth time's a charm. He fell short in previous world title challenges against Vasiliy Lomachenko, Oscar Valdez and Nicholas Walters, but he’s riding a four-bout winning streak (all by KO). He last fought in December 2019, knocking out Alfredo Mejia Vargas with a body shot. A native of Arjona, Colombia, he’s been scouting Stevenson as a potential foe. “I always wanted this fight, and the time is right now that he’s a world champion,” Marriaga said. “He speaks often about how people are ducking him, but here I am. Colombia will have a new world champion March 14.” Magdaleno (27-1, 18 KOs) is 2-0 as a featherweight since losing his junior featherweight world title to Isaac Dogboe in one of the best fights of 2018. A native of Las Vegas, he is coming off a unanimous technical decision over Rafael Rivera last August in Los Angeles. Lukas (23-0, 16 KOs), from Namibia, is one boxing’s best-kept secrets, a nine-year pro who has three knockouts in his last four fights. “The guys people don’t know about are the dangerous ones,” Magdaleno said. “With the mindset I have now, I don’t think anybody can beat me. “My trainer {Jorge Capetillo} and I are looking ahead. I’m just waiting on what’s next, but we have to take care of business against Lukas first. Once we do that, I have every right to call out all of the champions.” “There is a Desert Storm coming to New York in the name of Sakaria Lukas, and this storm is targeting the destruction of Jessie Magdaleno,” Lukas said. Conlan (13-0, 7 KOs) has made Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden his professional home, as he turned pro in front of a sold-out St. Patrick’s Day crowd there back in 2017. In the years since, he has graduated from prospect to contender, as he’s the No. 1 contender for the title held by Stevenson. He went 3-0 in 2019, including a decision win in December over Olympic nemesis Vladimir Nikitin. Preciado (20-2-1, 13 KOs) will be making his third ring appearance outside of his native Colombia, and he has won two in a row since a KO loss to former world title challenger Hiroshige Osawa. "I'm honored to return to the Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden, and fight for the fourth straight St. Patrick's Day,” Conlan said. "I know how tough Preciado is, but this fight is a great test as I continue on my path towards becoming a world champion. Fighting in New York City is very special for me. The fans have been very supportive right from the beginning at my pro debut on St. Patrick's Day in 2017, and I look forward to putting on another tremendous show for them this year." “The fans will be there to see Conlan, but mark my words, they will remember me,” Preciado said. “I am more than just another ‘opponent.’ When I win, I won’t be surprised. I am prepared for a hard 10 rounds." Mayer (12-0, 5 KOs), who turned pro in August 2017 after representing the United States at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has been dominant in the paid ranks. One of the 130-pound division’s top contenders, she last fought Oct. 26 on the Shakur Stevenson-Joet Gonzalez undercard, knocking out Alejandra Zamora in six rounds. Hernandez (23-7-3, 7 KOs), winner of four of her last five, won the WBC female featherweight world title in 2012. Last April, she dominated then-unbeaten Selina Barrios over eight rounds. “I'm excited to be fighting again in New York City, especially on St. Patrick's Day at Madison Square Garden,” Mayer said. “I love that I’m going up against a former world champion because it's going to make for a very competitive, exciting event. I’m also happy to be on a Mick Conlan card. He has a huge Irish and European fan base whom I hope to impress and turn into fans. See you at MSG!”
