Tiny Review: The Last Stop in Yuma County 2024. Ride to nowhere.
Tumblr media
Good premise. Gripping 1st half. My main gripe is there is no catharsis in the end. Comon, all that tension and setup for nothing?!
I was hoping so much that at least one of the starting protagonists had cathartic payoff. If not at the end, then at least somewhen in the story.

The Last Stop in Yuma County (2024) review
Tumblr media
This would make for a great triple bill alongside The Hateful Eight and Bad Times at the El Royale!
Plot: While stranded at a rural Arizona rest stop, a traveling salesman is thrust into a dire hostage situation by the arrival of two bank robbers with no qualms about using cruelty-or cold, hard steel-to protect their bloodstained fortune.
These types of film noir crime capers are consistently referred to as Coen Brothers-like, or Lynchian, or Tarantinoesque, but at this point I swear we need to come up with an actual genre name for these movies. An ironic western film noir so to speak. Regardless, I really enjoy these sort of movies. A interesting ensemble of characters stuck together in one place and then things go sideways. The amusingly titled The Last Stop in Yuma County is exactly that, yet even though it treads familiar territory, it still manages to stand out as the most entertaining movies of this year so far. Which isn’t high competition as the only two other stand out flicks of the year so far are Dune: Part Two and Furiosa, both set in the desert. Wait - The Last Stop in Yuma County is technically also set in the desert of the Americano plato. Can it be - my top 3 films of 2024 so far are all set in the desert! Coincidence? Yeah, probably.
What a confident film debut for the Francis Gallupi! In addition from managing to obtain outstanding performances from his mostly unknown cast of actors, the director demonstrates a vast knowledge of the cinematographic language, as even though you can tell that this movie was made on a small budget, he manages to successfully create an immersive experience for the audience. The camerawork and use of colour is great, but I also applaud him for managing to take what essentially is a very simple straightforward story, and make it really engaging and exciting by consistently upholding a sense of rising tension from scene to scene. This is an extremely well-paced build up, especially in the first two thirds of the film, which naturally results in an excitingly chaotic climactic Mexican stand-off. So hats off to Gallupi - I’m certain we will be seeing more work from him soon. Wait, he’s directing the next Evil Dead movie?! What???
I’ve already mentioned the solid performances. In regards to big names there’s only really Jim Cummings and Richard Brake, with Cummings highly entertaining as an anxiety riddled divorced father who is constantly on the brink of having a darkly comedic panic attack, and Brake as usual delivering a creepy unsettling turn as one of the robbers. But I even recognise some of the other actors. Gene Jones as part of the elderly couple played the shopkeeper in No Country for Old Men where Javier Bardem nearly killed him over a coin toss. Then there is Faizon Love who was the store manager in Elf! That’s right, the one who caused Will Ferrell to scream his signature line “Santa!!!! Oh my God!!!!” But this proves the point of why indie films are so charming. You don’t need big name actors to make a good movie. There’s so much talent out there and everyone in this movie played their part well.
The Last Stop in Yuma County is a movie that has existed before and will be made many more times again. However it is the overall presentation that makes it stand out, and it hit all the marks for me. Only complaint I’d say is that even though it’s a short movie, the last 15 minutes do drag a little as after the big inevitable shootout the film continues a little longer and loses a little it’s well crafted pace. Also throughout the movie so many characters end up walking into the diner that I do think the movie could have lost a couple and still been as enjoyable. Nevertheless a great time overall, and makes me only wonder, would rhubarb pie really taste THAT good?…
Overall score: 7/10

THE DEATH OF DICK LONG (2019) Grade: B
Didn't know anything about the film so every plot turn was a great surprise. Can't compare it, it's a crime noir with rednecks.

The Last Stop in Yuma County    [trailer]

Great little thriller, taking place at one location. Showing that you don't need much to tell a gripping story.
Deserves to be more widely seen.
