Ezhai Padum Padu: Tamil Les Misérables

Plot in the English Wikipedia:

「 Tough and ruthless Police Inspector Javert recaptures a small-time criminal Kandhan who has escaped from prison.

Kandhan turns a new leaf with the help of a Christian Bishop. When he is released from prison he starts a glass making company.

He changes his identity and becomes successful. He becomes the mayor of his town.

Inspector Javert finds out about his new life and threatens to expose him.

On one occasion Kandhan saves Javert's life. Javert commits suicide unable to turn Kandhan in to the authorities out of his sense of gratitude. 」

It is focused on Javert's arc in the story of Les Misérables, and his dynamic with Jean Valjean. It was simultaneously made with the other film,Beedala Patlu which focuses on the bigger picture of the story as a whole, ie Jean Valjean.

It is set in pre-independence era.

La iluminación ambiental, los movimientos de baile de Jimin, el tono característico, la voz única y la música (las cuerdas, los ritmos y las notas del sintetizador) se fusionan en algo surrealista. “Who” es una paleta de sonidos que resalta la voz de Jimin de manera perfecta, lo que hace que la canción suene un poco alucinante y sea una de mis favoritas.

Ezhai Padum Padu (1950)'s Opening

I decided to watch the beginning of Ezhai Padum Padu (1950), a whopping 3 hour long retelling of Les Mis. I say whopping, but that's probably because I'm hungry.

There's no subtitles, and the third party translator I usually use isn't strong on Tamil (it's iffy in Hindi, and somewhat present for Vietnamese, but completely silent on Tamil), so I am happy to report, I do not understand anything 😃

However, the visuals, that I can see. The movie begins with the prison. I think this scene can easily be compared to Kyojinden, and thus, in realisation of my free will, I shall indulge.

Jean Valjean and the other prisoners are doing forced labour and breaking apart rocks (idk if it's mining?) when a horn blows to announce the entrance of someone special… I'm guessing it's Javert? But it's too early to tell.

Jean Valjean detests him, and when the prisoners are squeezed into a line to face the guard, Jean Valjean spits at him as he passes by.

This then results in whipping.

While in Kyojinden Jean Valjean was merely resting, he gets the punishiment of whipping.

In Ezhai Padum Padu, Jean Valjean specifically retaliates against the treatment he's receiving and gets slashings.

Both movies censor this (thank you), but they do it in different ways.

While Kyojiden has the scene cut right before Jean Valjean gets whipped, in Ezhai Padum Padu, the camera focuses on his face. The actor has a marvellous set of expressions, just by his eyes alone,, it was good cinema.

The guns that the guards used to pin him down: one went on his back, and the other in front of his face.

As the gun blocked the view of the camers, you can see the mainly just his expressive eyes react to the slashings.

He also has a bestie that he's emotionally vulnerable to talk to in his prison cell, but I'm guessing it's for exposition
