Bạn đang xem: Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 MSM8996 Pro benchmark
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 MSM8996 is a high-end ARM-based SoC largely found on Android tablets and smartphones. Announced in mid 2016, the S820 is the successor to the Snapdragon 820 and from a technical perspective a higher clocked version of the SoC. In addition to 4 CPU cores (two slower clocked and two faster clocked Kryo cores), the SoC integrates an Adreno 530 GPU with a LPDDR4 memory controller  and supports Wi-Fi (802.11ad + MIMO), Bluetooth 4.1, and LTE.
CPU
The Snapdragon 821 is based on a similar concept as ARM’s big.LITTLE, which combines a low power CPU cluster (2x Kyro clocked at up to 1.6 GHz?) and a performance CPU cluster (2x Kyro clocked at up to 2.4 GHz). The clock speed of each cluster can be individually adjusted (but not per core) and the lowest clock speed is 310 MHz. The performance cluster features 1.5 MB L2 cache and the power saving one 512 KB. Both should be using the same architecture and fully support the ARMv8-ISA instruction set.
Tumblr media
Although only four cores are used, the performance of the 821 is located in the high end of mobile CPUs for smartphones and tablets. The performance advantage of the 821 compared to the 820 depends on the used clock speed. E.g. in the Google Pixel, the SoC is only clocked at 2.15 GHz and therefore identical to many 820 SoCs.
GPU
The Adreno 530 outperforms the previous Adreno 430 especially in high demanding benchmarks. Therefore it is well suited of modern 3D games on Android devices and should rank slightly below the Tegra X1 GPU. Compared to the 530 in the 820, the 821 version should be up to 5 % faster, which speaks for a slightly higher clock speed.
Tumblr media
Features
The Snapdragon 821 offers numerous wireless technologies such as Bluetooth 4.1, WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ad (60 GHz) + MIMO as well as a dual-SIM cellular modem supporting LTE cat. 12/13 .
The SoC can encode and decode 4K videos using dedicated hardware (H.264 and H.265).
Tumblr media
Power Consumption
Thanks to the new 14 nm process, the energy efficiency has been improved noticeably compared to its 20 nm predecessors.

Xiaomi phones Review
Tumblr media
Today, more than 600 companies produce smartphones. However, almost 80% of the world market belongs to ten major manufacturers, including South Korean Samsung (19%) and LG (3%), American Apple (12%), Finnish Nokia (1%) and Chinese Huawei (13%, including Honor), Xiaomi (9%), Oppo (9%), Vivo (8%), Lenovo (3%, including Motorola), Tecno (1%). As known, the Chinese Xiaomi Corporation was founded in 2010. During this time, the company has developed and released a huge number of models in almost all price segments. Some series, for example, Xiaomi Mi Note, were discontinued, having existed for several years. But others were more successful.
Xiaomi series line
1.Xiaomi Mi - the main, flagship line; 6-inch or more IPS, or AMOLED displays, 8-core Snapdragon 660, 845, 710, 712, 730, 855 and 855+. 2018 - Mi 6X, Mi 8, Mi 8 Lite, Mi 8 EE and Mi 8 SE; 2019 - Mi 9T, Mi 9 SE, Mi 9 and Mi 9 Pro 5G. 2.Xiaomi Mi Max - phablets; 6.9 - inch IPS, 8-core Snapdragon 636. 2018 - Mi Max 3. 3.Xiaomi Mi Mix - frameless design; 5.99 "IPS and 6.39" Super AMOLED, 8-core Snapdragon 845. 2018 - Mix 2S and Mix 3; 4.Xiaomi Mi A - without MIUI firmware, with Android One distribution and a minimum of pre-installed programs (only Google services). Up to 6 inches IPS or 6-inch AMOLED, 8-core Snapdragon 660, 625 and 665. 2018 - Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite; 2019 - Mi A3. 5.Redmi is a budget segment; IPS up to 6 inches, 8-core Snapdragon 625, 8-core MediaTek Helio P22 or 4-core MediaTek Helio A22. 2018 - Redmi 5, 5 Plus, S2, 6, 6A, 6 Pro. 6.Redmi Note - Phablets; IPS from 6 inches, 8-core Snapdragon 636. 2018 - Redmi Note 5 and 6 Pro. 7.Redmi sub-brand - since 2019, the budget segment; IPS or AMOLED from 6.2 inches and above, 4-core Snapdragon 425 or 8-core Snapdragon 632, 660, 675, 730, 439. 2019 - Redmi GO, Redmi 7, Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi K20, Redmi 8. 8.Black Shark - game series (liquid cooling system, screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, enhanced performance mode); 6-inch IPS, 6 or 6.4-inch AMOLED, 8-core Snapdragon 845 or 855. 2018 - Black Shark and Black Shark Helo; 2019 - Black Shark 2.
MIUI (MI User Interface)
Of course, the OS is one of the main components of a modern phone, providing most of its smart functionality. As known, since 2010 Xiaomi Inc has been developing open-source MIUI (MI User Interface) based on the Android OS. This OS does not use the app menu. The first versions were developed using a startup based on Android 2.2.x Froyo and only supported the Chinese language. After entering the international market, Xiaomi divided MIUI into local Chinese and international. The local version uses English and Chinese languages, and Chinese counterparts instead of Google services. The international version supports Google services and more than 40 languages. For nine years, the company has released 11 versions. The penultimate, MIUI 10 (10.4.5.0 latest stable release) version was released on May 31, 2018. On September 24, 2019, the company introduced the latest MIUI 11 (11.3.4.0 release) for Android 7.0 and up, including Android 10.
Tumblr media
MIUI 11
The list of major changes: - DC dimming. Probably, DC dimming has become one of the main improvements of the new version. As known, adjusting the brightness of OLED matrices uses PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). Unfortunately, PWM causes the screen flicker when brightness decreases, which causes eye strain. In fact, this is one of the main disadvantages of modern AMOLED screens. Of course, the solution to this problem is a serious achievement. To reduce brightness, the algorithm reduces the voltage applied to the pixels, instead of frequency; - interface - dark theme schedule, displaying the % battery charge, selecting MIUI or Android notifications, font size settings, a button for switching between camera modules, etc; - a significant expansion of the assortment of sounds and their sets for notifications, mainly on the theme of nature (meowing, etc); - Always On Display with dynamic animation; - similar to Apple's AirPlay, MIUI 11 offers Cast from Xiaomi (support for transferring content to the screens of most modern Smart TVs without additional software or equipment); - similar to Apple's AirDrop, data transfer to some other smartphones (Xiaomi, OPPO, Realme and Vivo).
Xiaomi Mi 9T and Xiaomi Mi 9 SE
The Xiaomi Mi 9T with a retractable front selfie camera offers a minimal flagship set.
Tumblr media
The model uses a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with 2340 x 1080 resolution (403 ppi), an 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset (2 ARM Cortex-A76 with a frequency of up to 2.2 GHz and 6 ARM Cortex-A55 with a frequency of up to 1.8 GHz), RAM 6GB and 64/128GB. In addition, the model may well claim the status of a camera phone using a three-module camera (48 MP, 8 MP and 13 MP sensors) with f/1.75, f/2.40, f/2.40 aperture, LED flash, autofocus, macro mode and optical Zoom 2x. As usual, the front camera uses a 20 megapixel sensor. In addition, a 4000 mAh battery provides a good battery life. PROS - good hardware platform; - great main camera; - retractable front camera; - high battery life. Cons - does not support 4K @ 60 video recording; - the average level of the unlock system. Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is a compact version with a 5.97-inch Super AMOLED with 2340 x 1080 resolution (432 ppi).
Tumblr media
MI 9 SE uses Snapdragon 712 (2 Kryo 360 clusters, including 2 Cortex-A75 with a frequency of 2.3 GHz and 6 Coretx-A55 with a frequency of up to 1.8 GHz), RAM 6GB and 64 / 128GB, NFC and fast charging. The model also has a three-module camera (8MP Sony IMX586 Exmor RS + 8MP + 13MP) and a 20-megapixel front camera.
Xiaomi Mi 9
Xiaomi Mi 9 is a more performance phone. Like the Mi 9T, the model uses a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with 2340 x 1080 resolution (403 ppi), RAM 6GB and 128GB.
Tumblr media
But the company equipped it with the more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (8 Kryo 485, including Coretx-A76 up to 2.84 GHz + 512 KB cache, 3 Coretx-A76 (256 KB cache) up to 2.42 GHz and 4 Coretx-A55 up to 1.8 GHz).
Tumblr media
As known, the first smartphones with Snapdragon 855, including Xiaomi Mi9, Samsung Galaxy S10, LG G8 and V50 were presented at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2019. In addition, Mi 9 uses an exellent three-module (48 MP + 16 MP + 12 MP) camera with f/1.75, f/2.20 and f/2.20 aperture and a 20-megapixel front camera. PROS - great hardware platform; - excellent shooting quality; - Qualcomm Quick Charge and wireless charging. Cons - high price; - no optical stabilization; - there is no protection against moisture.
Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G
But in September, the company already introduced the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G.
Tumblr media
This smartphone has the latest Snapdragon 855+ (2019) with a fast Prime Core that clocks up to 2.96 GHz (up from 2.84 GHz in the 855), three fast ARM Cortex-A76 performance cores, which can reach up to 2.42 GHz and four power-saving ARM Cortex-A55 cores that clock up to a maximum of 1.8 GHz. In AnTuTu, the result of Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G reaches 480,830 points. Its price is $ 520 for model with RAM 8GB and 128GB, $ 534 - 8/256GB, $ 577 - 12/256GB and $ 605 - 12/512GB. The capacity of battery increased from 3300 to 4000 mAh. The model supports triple fast charging. Charging time for wired charging is 48 minutes; wireless charging provides 2000 mAh in 25 minutes. The smartphone also supports wireless reverse charging for other mobile devices.
Tumblr media
But other components have not changed much. The Mi 9 Pro 5G uses a 6.39-inch Samsung Super AMOLED Full HD+ display with a maximum brightness of 600 nits, and a fingerprint sensor is integrated under the screen. The three-module camera has a 48 megapixel sensor (wide-angle lens with a viewing angle of 79° and an aperture of f/1.75), a 16 megapixel sensor (ultra wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/2.2 and a viewing angle of 117°) and 12 megapixel sensor with f/2, 2. Additionally, the model has a front-facing 20-megapixel camera with f/2.0.
Xiaomi Black Shark 2
In addition, in 2019, the company introduced the second generation of the gaming Black Shark smartphone.
Tumblr media
Xiaomi engineers managed to significantly improve the previous version. Firstly, Black Shark 2 uses an AMOLED matrix with an unprecedentedly low switching time for brightness levels and response of the sensor layer. Unfortunately, it does not support DC Dimming technology that eliminates screen flicker due to low frequency PWM. Secondly, the model uses an advanced liquid cooling system with a copper radiator and several layers of graphite film.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, it still heats up under prolonged high loads, but much less compared to Black Shark. The model uses an 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. In addition, the smartphone has a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with 2340 x 1080 resolution (403 ppi), RAM 6GB, 128GB, a dual-module camera (48 MP + 12 MP) with f/1.75 and f/2.20 aperture and 20-megapixel front camera. Additionally, a 4000 mAh battery provides a good battery life. PROS - Snapdragon 855; - very fast AMOLED matrix; - gamer interface; - Parental Control; - optional gamepad. Cons - no DC Dimming technology; - does not support memory cards; - no NFC (Near Field Communication) module. As known, the NFC module provides wireless data transmission at a short distance of up to 10 cm using a radio signal. The module practically does not consume energy and provides almost instant communication. Unfortunately, this protocol supports a rather low speed and limited amount of data. However, its popularity is growing rapidly.
Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha
Of course, Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha has become the most innovative phone in 2019. The area of its wrap-around screen reaches 180.6% of the body area. In fact, this unusual display is wrapped around the case.
Tumblr media
Its side faces are used to place touch buttons. Of course, the camera with a 108-megapixel sensor (1/1.33-inch) was the second sensation of the model.
Tumblr media
The camera also has an integrated optical image stabilization system. Lightweight and durable titanium alloy case provides a stylish design.
Tumblr media
The rest of the specs also correspond to the highest level, including 5G, Snapdragon 855 Plus, RAM 12GB, 512GB, sound transmission technology via vibration of the screen surface, 4050 mAh battery, fast charge, etc. Unfortunately, the preliminary price of the model reaches around $ 3,000.
Conclusion
More recently, consumer electronics from Chinese brands was mainly positioned in the budget or mid-budget segments due to the relatively low quality and innovative level. But in the past few years, the situation has changed radically. Chinese smartphones, TVs, projectors, robotic vacuum cleaners are increasingly successfully competing with the flagships of traditional leaders. For example, many experts call Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G one of the best models of 2019. In addition, Xiaomi Black Shark 2 successfully competes in the gaming segment. Moreover, Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha rightfully claims to be the main innovative sensation of 2019. On the other hand, the price of Chinese brands also no longer refers to the budget segment. Of course, Samsung, LG, and other traditional leaders are still leading in terms of reliability and service. But Xiaomi can press them on the innovative Olympus. Of course, this factor will significantly affect the choice of the optimal smartphone among high-tech fans. This video shows a new Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha phone with a unprecedented screen to body ratio (180,6%) and with a 108-megapixel sensor (1/1.33-inch). Read the full article

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Review
Tumblr media
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 full review If you're looking for a sub-£200 Android phone with a decent-size screen, good battery life and usable all-round performance and features, this could be it. Very similar to the Mi Max 3, but with a smaller 5.99in display, the Redmi Note 5 is a worthy upgrade over the Note 4 with improved performance, photography and design.
Since we originally wrote this review Xiaomi has entered the UK smartphone market, making it much easier to obtain its smartphones here. The Redmi Note 5 is now available from the likes of Amazon for £229.
A special Cyber Monday deal knocks a further £69 off the price, with the Redmi Note 5 available for just £159.99. (See more Cyber Monday deals.)
Previously we've had to import review samples from China, and this Redmi Note 5 was supplied by GearBest, where current pricing is £182.39. When there's no Cyber Monday sale on at Amazon this makes it the cheaper deal, but know that when importing from China to the UK you are liable for import duty, charged at 20 percent of the value printed on the shipping paperwork.
This is the Global version of the Redmi Note 5, which comes with all Google services preinstalled along with MIUI 9. It supports all 4G LTE bands used in the UK, too, which can be a problem with some Chinese handsets.

When is a Redmi Note 5 not a Redmi Note 5? Xiaomi's phone naming scheme can be incredibly confusing if you're not familiar with it, but we think more so with the Redmi Note 5 than any other. That's because the Redmi Note 5 that launched in China and is sold globally is not the same phone as the Redmi Note 5 that launched in India.
The Redmi Note 5 available in India has a single-lens camera at the rear and some lower-spec hardware, including the Snapdragon 625 processor. It has the new 18:9 5.99in display, but in other respects is not a huge departure from the Redmi Note 4. And that explains why some reviews of the Redmi Note 5 are less complimentary than others.
Also available in India is the Redmi Note 5 Pro, and that's (almost) the phone you see here rebranded as the Redmi Note 5. It has a dual-lens camera at the rear and runs the Snapdragon 636.
But in India the Pro also has a 20Mp selfie camera and up to 6GB of RAM, while this Global version's front camera is rated at 13Mp and has either 3- or 4GB of memory.

If you're worried about purchasing the wrong version of the phone then fear not - we couldn't even find the Indian models for sale in the UK. But we'd recommend double-checking the spec before you buy. Better yet, just click this link.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 What's new in Redmi Note 5? There are some key design changes in the Redmi Note 5 over its predecessor, but also a return to the Redmi Note 3's part plastic build - the antenna lines at the rear of the Note 4 have been replaced with plastic end caps - and 4000mAh battery, which is still pretty generous, but 100mAh down on Redmi Note 4.
More impressive is the new 5.99in Full-HD+ IPS display, not only larger than the 5.5in previous example but also taller, adopting the 18:9 aspect ratio that has become fashionable in today's market. It helps the phone look more on-trend, and also allows for a larger screen without infringing on usability - the Note 5 is only 7mm taller than its predecessor, and fractionally narrower and slimmer.
The phone's chin has also been reduced, with navigational buttons now appearing onscreen. And an update to MIUI 10 is available, which gives you the option to use swipe gestures to go home or back, removing these buttons from the display.

There are some tweaks found along the edges, too. While the Redmi Note 5 still features a mono speaker, it no longer attempts to hide this fact with a set of drilled holes lying either side of its Micro-USB port. Instead you'll find just one, and on the other side the headphone jack has moved down from its previous position at the top of the device.
The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor has not moved, but where the single-lens camera previously sat above it Xiaomi has now added a second lens and moved this to a new position at top-left. It did lie flush; now it juts out a tad.
And naturally there have been hardware changes, which result in a boost to performance. Gone is the deca-core Helio X20 chip with Mali T880 graphics, and in comes the Snapdragon 636 with Adreno 509. There's a new 4GB RAM, 64GB storage model, too (that's what we're reviewing here).
Redmi Note 5 Design & Build Despite the aforementioned sprinkling of plastic parts, Redmi Note 5 is a very good-looking phone at this price. Moreover, it feels sturdy, and very well-made.
The new screen and taller aspect ratio is a blessing for usability, and though it's still a bit of a stretch for your thumb to reach the top corner it is operable in a single hand - especially when you take advantage of one-handed mode, which shrinks the display area.
It's an IPS panel, which bodes well for quality, with realistic colours and good viewing angles. We can't find any official reference to the Note 5 using Gorilla Glass protection, but thanks to a metal rear it is only the one side of this smartphone you need to keep safe. You'll also find a silicone case in the box, which is handy.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 We measured the maximum screen brightness at 427cd/m2, which is very good for a sub-£200 phone. Being able to ramp up the brightness so high also makes the screen easier to see outdoors.
The display has a full-HD+ resolution of 2160x1080, which results in a pixel density of 403ppi. It's sufficiently clear, and also no higher in resolution than even Xiaomi's flagship phones.
We're disappointed to see an old Micro-USB port at the bottom, especially given that it won't charge any faster than at 10W. There is a charger supplied in the box, but it has a two-pin EU plug, so if you're purchasing this phone in the UK you'll need to supply your own adaptor.
Naturally at this price there's no support for wireless charging, which has so far been seen only on the Mi Mix 2S.
On the up side, Xiaomi has retained the IR blaster on the Note 5's top edge. It's incredibly rare to find such a feature in phones these days.
There's also the fingerprint scanner at the rear, which works well - but if you're interested in mobile payments be aware there's no support for NFC.
Connectivity is otherwise pretty good, with dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and GLONASS, and a hybrid SIM slot that can either accept a single SIM and a microSD card for storage expansion or two SIMs that work in dual-standby mode.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Redmi Note 5 Hardware & Performance Powering the show here is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chip clocked at 1.8GHz, with integrated Adreno 509 graphics. It's paired with 4GB of memory.
That's the same setup as in the Mi Max 3, and as you'll see in our chart below performance is on par.
As we said for that phone, the Redmi Note 5 is not a speed demon. However, it offers usable performance for most users for daily tasks, and we didn't spot any sign of lag when navigating the interface and launching apps.
You can play casual games and watch movies, provided you don't throw anything too intensive at it.
Battery life is very good, and you'll easily get at least a full day's life from the 4000mAh cell - maybe more, depending on your usage.
In Geekbench 4's battery test it scored 5390 points, and kept churning through its task list for 8 hours 59 minutes.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Redmi Note 5 Cameras & Photography It might sound like a similar setup as found on the Mi Max 3, but the Redmi Note 5's camera is inferior with no AI mode. It also maxes out at 1080p video recording.
Still, it's an improvement on the Redmi Note 4's 13Mp rear camera and 5Mp selfie camera. This new model has a 12Mp + 5Mp dual-lens camera at the rear, with dual phase-detection dual-focus and 1.4um pixels. At the front is a 13Mp selfie camera.
Aside from the missing AI button at the top, the camera app looks the same as on any other Xiaomi phone, with options to turn on/off/auto the flash and HDR mode, and to select real-time filters. At the bottom you swipe between video (and short video), photo, portrait, square, panorama and manual shooting modes.
Portrait mode is what's used to create those funky blurred background shots that help your subject to stand out, aided by the second camera lens.
Overall we were very impressed with the quality of our test shots (below in Auto and HDR modes). Those pictured below appear a little dark, though it was an overcast day when they were shot. They show plenty of detail but are perhaps a little over-sharpened.
Redmi Note 5 Auto
Redmi Note 5 HDR In low-light the Redmi Note 5 did a fantastic job. There is some noise but overall blacks are well rendered, text is largely fuzz-free, and the scene is adequately lit without requiring aid from the flash.
Redmi Note 5 Low Light
Redmi Note 5 Software The Redmi Note 5 runs MIUI 9 out of the box but an upgrade is available to MIUI 10. This is still based on Android Oreo rather than the more recent Android Pie (which will be coming in time), but includes some nice new features such as full-display gesture support, a redesigned quick access panel and volume controls, plus the addition of Picture in Picture and Autofill.
It won't be immediately recognisable as Android if you've not picked up a Xiaomi phone before, and the lack of an app tray means the shortcuts all spill out over the home screens (but can be tidied into folders). The Settings menu also looks completely different, and there are some Xiaomi-specific apps here too.
Because this is the Global ROM version of the Redmi Note 5 it is preinstalled with Google services; were you to buy the Chinese ROM version you would need to install these yourself from the Mi App Store. That's because Google services are not used in China.
Other things we like about MIUI include the aforementioned One-handed mode, plus Second Space and Dual Apps.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5
Redmi Note 5 Verdict It's not infallible, but the Redmi Note 5 is a great all-rounder and will be hard to beat under £200. It benefits from a very good and well-sized screen, and has a decent camera and usable performance.

USB Power Delivery: The fastest way to charge your iPhone and Android device
Anker 28600 With USB PD
With the introduction of the iPhone 8 and now the iPhone XS/Max and soon to be delivered XR, with their much faster processors and vivid high-resolution displays and always-on connectivity, demands on battery performance are now higher than ever before.
Featured stories
As a recent owner of one of these devices, you may have noticed that while you are on the road, you’re running out of juice quickly. So you’re probably going to need to invest in a portable battery and a faster wall charger.
Also: Here’s how much it costs to charge a smartphone for a year
But not all portable batteries are the same, despite the fact that they might use similar Lithium Polymer (LiPo) and Lithium Ion (Lion) cells for capacity and look very much alike.
Modern smartphone hardware from Apple and various Android manufacturers support much faster charging rates than what was previously supported.
But if you use the charger that comes in the box with the current generation iPhone hardware, or if you just simply buy just any portable battery pack on the market, you’re going to be disappointed.
Ideally, you want to match your charger, battery and even the charging cable to the optimal charging speeds that your device supports.
There are three different high-speed USB charging standards currently on the market, and while all of them will work with your device using a common legacy charge mode, you will ideally want to match up the correct technology in order to optimize the speed in which you can top off your phone, tablet, or even your laptop.
Let’s start by explaining the differences between them.
Legacy USB-A 2.0 and 3.0 charging
If your Android device has the USB Micro B connector (the dreaded fragile trapezoid that’s impossible to connect in the dark) you can fast charge it using an inexpensive USB-A to USB Micro B cable.
If the device and the charge port both support the USB 2.0 standard (pretty much the least common denominator these days for entry-level Android smartphones) you can charge it at 1.5A/5V.
Also: How I learned to stop worrying and love USB Type-C
Some consumer electronics, such as higher-end vape batteries that use the Evolv DNA chipset can charge at 2A.
A USB 3.0/3.1 charge port on one of these batteries can supply 3.0A/5V if the device supports it.
If you are charging an accessory, such as an inexpensive pair of wireless earbuds or another Bluetooth device, and it doesn’t support either of the USB-A fast charging specs, it will slow charge at either 500mA or 900mA which is about the same you can expect from directly connecting it to most PCs.
Mode Voltage Max Current Connector USB PD Variable up to 20V 5A USB-C USB Type-C 3A 5V 3.0A USB-C USB Type-C 1.5A 5V 1.5A USB-C QC 4.0 (USB-PD Compatible) Variable up to 20V 4.6A USB-C QC 3.0 Variable up to 20V 4.6A USB-A/USB-C QC 2.0 5V, 9V, 12V, 20V 2A USB-A USB BC 1.2 5V 1.5A USB-A USB 3.1 5V 900mA USB-A USB 2.0 5V 500mA USB-A
Many of the portable batteries on the market have both USB-C and multiple USB-A ports. Some of them have USB-A ports which can deliver the same voltage, while others feature one fast (2.4A) and one slow (1A).
So you will want to make sure you plug the device into the battery port which can charge it at the fastest rate if you want to top off the device as quickly as possible.
USB Power Delivery
USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a relatively new fast charge standard which was introduced by the USB Implementers Forum, the creators of the USB standard.
It is an industry-standard open specification that provides high-speed charging with variable voltage up to 20V using intelligent device negotiation up to 5A at 100W.
It scales all the way up from smartphones to notebook computers provided they use a USB-C connector and a USB-C power controller on the client and host.
Sample charging times using USB PD technology (Source: Belkin)
Batteries and wall chargers which employ USB PD have the ability to charge devices up to 30W output using a USB-C connector.
Apple introduced USB PD charging with iOS devices with the launch of the 2015 iPad Pro 12.9″ and with OS X laptops in the MacBook Pro as of 2016. The iPhone 8, the iPhone X and XS/Max can rapid charge with USB PD using any USB PD charging accessory — you don’t have to use Apple’s OEM USB-C 29W or its 61W power adapters — but it requires that you use Apple’s OEM MKQ42AM/A (1m ) or MD818ZM/A (2m) USB-C to Lightning cables which unfortunately are a tad expensive at around $19-$35 from various online retailers.
Personally, I buy mine from Amazon but your mileage may vary.
Apple OEM USB-C to Lightning Cable. The only fast charge cable for iPhones that currently works.
There are cheaper 3rd-party USB-C to Lightning cables, but none of the ones we have tested on the market will charge current generation iOS devices at full speed — they can’t do better than 2.4A because Apple uses a special integrated circuit in their cables for power negotiation.
We are expecting to see 3rd-party MFI-certified cables — hopefully less expensive than Apple’s USB-C to Lightning — by the end of Q4 of 2018, so watch this space.
We would also like to mention Belkin because although they do not have a USB PD battery solution or MFI-certified USB-C cables yet, they do have some excellent USB PD wall charging and 12V car charger solutions which are much more cost-competitive than the OEM Apple 29W USB-C charger.
Qualcomm Quick Charge
Qualcomm, whose Snapdragon SoCs are used in a number of popular smartphones and tablets, has its own fast-charging standard, Quick Charge, which has been through multiple iterations.
The current implementation is Quick Charge 4.0 which is backward-compatible with older Quick Charge accessories and devices. Unlike USB PD, Quick Charge 2.0 and 3.0 can be delivered using the USB-A connector. Quick Charge 4.0 is exclusive to USB-C.
Quick Charge 4.0 is only present in phones which use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835/845 which can be found in the US version of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9, OnePlus 6, HTC U11, LG V30, Moto Z2 Force, the Google Pixel 2 XL and upcoming Pixel 3 XL.
RavPower 26000mAh with Quick Charge 3.0
ZDNet
The Xiaomi Mi 6, Xiaomi Mix 2, ZTE Nubia Z17, and the Sony Xperia XZ Premium also use QC 4.0, but they aren’t sold in the US market currently. Huawei’s phones which utilize their own Kirin 970/980 chips use their own Supercharge standard but they are backward compatible with the 18W USB PD standard.
Like USB PD, QC 3.0 and QC 4.0 are variable voltage technologies and will intelligently ramp up your device for optimal charging speeds and safety. However, Quick Charge 3.0 and 4.0 differ from USB PD in that it has some additional features for thermal management and voltage stepping with the Snapdragon 820/821/835/845 in order to optimize for reduced heat footprint while charging.
Also: The 6 best portable battery chargers for smartphones and tablets TechRepublic
It also uses a different variable voltage selection and negotiation protocol than USB PD which Qualcomm advertises as better/safer for its own SoCs.
And for devices which use Qualcomm’s current chipsets, Quick Charge 4.0 is about 25 percent faster than Quick Charge 3.0. The company advertises five hours of usage time on the device for five minutes of charge time.
However, while it is present in (some of ) the wall chargers that ship with the devices themselves, and a few 3rd-party solutions, Quick Charge 4 is not in any battery products yet. The reason for this is that it is not just competing with USB Power Delivery, is also compatible with USB Power Delivery.
Qualcomm’s technology and ICs have to be licensed at considerable additional expense to the OEMs, whereas USB PD is an open standard.
If you compound this with the fact that Google itself is recommending OEMs conform to USB-PD over Quick Charge for Android-based products, it sounds like USB PD is the way to go, right?
Well, sort of. If you have a Quick Charge 3.0 device, definitely get a Quick Charge 3.0 battery. But if you have a Quick Charge 4.0 device or an iOS device, get at USB PD battery, for now.
Which Battery?
Now that you understand the fundamental charging technologies, which battery to buy?

* Two Anker models — PowerCore+ 26800 PD and PowerCore Speed 20000 PD — are the only two models to include a wall charger.
We’ve tested a bunch of these and we’ve essentially narrowed it down to two: The RAVPower RP-PB058 for USB PD (newest iPhones and newest Androids) and the Anker PowerCore+ 26800 for Quick Charge 3.0 (Previous generation Androids). Both are 26800mAh batteries with huge charge capacity.
Also: Mophie 30-day wireless challenge: Staying powered up without a cable connection
Anker’s product is more expensive but it comes with a USB-C QC 3.0 wall charger that can be used with the battery or direct charge a QC 3.0 compatible device, whereas the RAVPower we have seen on the street as low as $60 with wide market availability and with Amazon Prime promotions, so be sure to shop around because that is a great value at that price.
Anker also has a USB PD version of the PowerCore+ 26800 bundle but it is not as easy to find. We suspect the company is working on a new product revision compatible with USB PD and QC 4.0 and it will be out after the holidays — but if you see the current model on sale, jump on it. We particularly like the metal case design and the large illuminated power stud button that is easy to feel even in the dark.

Both of these companies sell equivalent USB PD and QC 3.0 products including compatible wall chargers (see Anker and RavPower). As with Apple’s own OEM accessories, it isn’t necessary to match brands when pairing a wall charger with a USB PD or QC 3.0 battery.
However, because of licensing, the QC 3.0 ones appear to be priced more expensively — so unless you have a QC 3.0 compatible device, we suggest you stay with USB PD charging accessories for now.
A product that we did not mention in earlier drafts of this article is the ZMI 20000 mAh USB PD Backup Battery which along with its USB PD wall charger is currently on promotion at Amazon.
If you buy both of these products together, Amazon will apply a promotional discount, which makes the combined price $89.90 which is less than what Anker and RavPower offer their equivalent battery/charger bundles for.
Also: Mophie Powerstation Plus XL and XXL portable batteries: One Lightning cable to rule them all
This particular product has the distinction of having both USB PD and QC 3.0 capabilities, has a 45W USB PD output, and can also act as a daisy-chained USB 2.0 hub, so it is a particularly good buy. ZMI makes OEM products for Xiaomi, a huge Chinese smartphone manufacturer which like Huawei, has yet to find US carrier distribution yet.
Two other products we would like to mention are the Mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL and the Mophie Powerstation AC.
The USB-C XXL is a very nice looking battery as it integrates a fabric wrap over the polycarbonate casing so it’s pleasant to the touch — and it fully supports USB PD at 30W.
Its big brother is the Powerstation AC, which in addition to a USB-C PD and USB-A port, also has a 110VAC/100W port to supply power to virtually anything, including legacy laptops and other computing devices.

Xiaomi has launched three new devices in the last few months, starting with the Mi Mix 2s, the budget king Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Redmi Note 5. We are still awaiting the launch of the flagship Mi 7, Mi Note, and the Mi Max 3. However, the portfolio of the Chinese giant doesn’t end up there. As per new leaks buzzing over the internet, a new Xiaomi Redmi S2 device has been leaked in its glory. Along with good quality images of the device, most of the specs are also revealed in this latest leak. The design is heavily inspired by the Redmi Note 5 Pro and could be easily mistaken for that device if one doesn’t consider those antenna lines.
Speaking about the Specs, the Xiaomi Redmi S2 is packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 CPU under the hood, which is now almost a 2 to 3-year-old chip, but the Snapdragon 625 is infamous for its efficiency providing a stellar battery performance. In the memory department, it has 3GB RAM and a decent 32GB of internal storage.
Moreover, it also has a dual-Camera setup with the primary camera being a 12 MP sensor paired with a 5 MP depth sensor which further gets accompanied by an LED flash. So, till now you get an idea that this a budget device, but the display resolution further hints that this might be an entry-level budget device which could sit below the Redmi Note 5.
As the Redmi S2 sports an 18:9 5.99-inch 1440×720 pixels IPS display. Nailing further speculations about the device being an entry-level budget phone, probably with the likes of the Redmi 5A plus and similar devices. The Battery is reported to be at 3080mAh capacity. This device is said to ship with Android Oreo 8.1 out of the box, and of course with MIUI 9 running on top of it.
Update: 29/4/18
Pricing for the Xiaomi Redmi S2 has now emerged online and the pricing is said to be in Vietnamese currency and after converting it into the US dollar, it comes at $176 or €145. Which is a great deal considering it’s packing more than enough hardware for that price. And will sit below the Redmi Note 5.
For Xiaomi users in India, expect the Redmi S2 to be priced around 8K to 9K or even less. Lastly, we might see the launch pretty soon, but first, it will hit the Chinese markets, followed by Vietnamese markets and later an Indian launch is also inevitable.

MWC 2018: Here’s what to expect What is MWC? Mobile World Congress is the biggest and most exciting event for the mobile industry. It’s where the majority of big players like Samsung, LG, Sony, and Huawei show off their latest and greatest products every year. When is MWC? MWC kicks off on Monday, Feb 26 and ends on Thursday, March 1. Many companies typically announce new devices at press events held a day or two before the show officially starts. Where is MWC? As is the case every year, MWC will take place in Barcelona, Spain at two venues— Fira Gran Via and Fira Montjuïc. What can we expect from MWC? MWC has always been about smartphones. We’ll see a number of them announced in sunny Spain including what will likely be the star of the show, the Galaxy S9 series. Plenty of other devices like smartwatches, tablets, and more are also expected to be revealed. Want to learn more? We’ve rounded up all the details about MWC 2018 we know so far, so read on! Samsung Samsung already announced the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will make their debut at MWC. It didn’t share any details regarding the devices, but we know a lot about them thanks to the many leaks and rumors we’ve come across. The flagships won’t be major upgrades over their predecessors. They are expected to feature the same 5.8- and 6.2-inch Super AMOLED displays with QHD+ resolution and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The Plus model could sport a dual-camera setup on the back and 6 GB of RAM, while its smaller brother may feature a single primary shooter and 4 GB of RAM. Both should be powered by the Snapdragon 845 or Exynos 9810 chipset, depending on the region. Samsung Galaxy S9 render 91 Mobiles Samsung’s upcoming handsets are also said to be IP68 rated for protection against water and dust, come with an improved iris scanner, and feature variable aperture. To learn more, check out our Galaxy S9 rumor roundup post. The tech giant could also announce a new high-end tablet in Barcelona. It took the wraps off the Galaxy Tab S3 at MWC 2017, so it’s possible we’ll see its successors at this year’s event. LG Many initially thought LG would take the wraps off the successor to the G6 at MWC in Barcelona, but it now looks like that may not happen. According to the latest report, the company’s CEO has ordered a complete rethink of the upcoming flagship, which could push its reveal date back to at least April. Additionally, LG confirmed it would move away from a traditional annual release strategy, instead retaining existing models over a longer lifespan. Nothing has been confirmed yet; there’s still a chance we’ll see the G6’s successor in Barcelona, but don’t hold your breath. LG could reveal a new version of the V30 at MWC. It’s more likely LG will reveal a new version of the V30 at MWC. According to a report from The Korea Herald, the smartphone could be called the “V30+‘α’” and should come with enhanced AI features. These will likely be centered around Google Assistant, although there’s no word on what they might be. Huawei Although unconfirmed, Huawei is expected to take the wraps off the successors to the P10 and P10 Plus smartphones in Spain — rumored to be called the P20 and P20 Plus. Based on the latest rumors, the handsets might be powered by the Kirin 970 chipset that’s also found in the Mate 10 series. According to Evan Blass, both could be equipped with a triple lens 40 MP rear camera setup with 5x hybrid zoom as well as a 24 MP selfie snapper. Is the next Huawei P-series going to be an imaging powerhouse? A digital artist at one of the company’s creative agencies added these “PCE Series” ads to their portfolio — claiming 40MP, 3 lens rear (5x hybrid zoom) + 24MP selfie, all Leica-co-developed. pic.twitter.com/t8w3VlL55L — Evan Blass (@evleaks) December 6, 2017 They may also support facial recognition said to be safer and more accurate than Apple’s Face ID. If you’re interested in learning more about the smartphones, check out our Huawei P20 series rumor roundup post. At MWC 2017, Huawei revealed the Watch 2 and Watch 2 Classic. It’s possible that the company could announce their successors in Barcelona, but we haven’t come across any leaks or rumors that would support this assumption. Alcatel Alcatel gave us a sneak peek at three of its upcoming smartphones at CES, which will make their official debut at MWC. The company didn’t reveal their names, but the devices will likely be called the Alcatel 5, 3v, and 1x. All of them will feature an 18:9 display and the affordable price tag the Alcatel brand has become known for. You can learn more about the handsets in our hands-on video below. Although Alcatel didn’t share the specs of the devices with the public, we have a good idea of what one of them might bring to the table. According to Roland Quandt, the 3V is expected to come with a 6-inch Full HD+ display, the MediaTek MT6737 chipset, and 2 GB RAM. It could be equipped with a dual-camera setup on the back (16 MP + 2 MP), pack a 3000 mAh battery, and offer 16 GB of expandable storage. There’s no word on what specs the other two smartphones will offer. Alcatel 3V: 6in IPS 2160×1080, MT6737 1,45 GHz quadcore, 2/16GB, 16+2 MP rear cam, 8 MP front cam, Dual SIM+SD, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Cat.4 LTE, BT4.2, 3000mAh battery, MicroUSB, FP reader, 8,05mm thickness, 169g, ~179 Euro pic.twitter.com/d2liNED0g0 — Roland Quandt (@rquandt) January 16, 2018 It’s possible Alcatel will announce a few more handsets in Barcelona. Based on the leak showing the company’s 2018 lineup of smartphones, models 3 and 3x could also be revealed. Nokia Juho Sarvikas, the CEO of HMD Global, has announced on Twitter to expect something “awesome” from the company at MWC 2018. Unfortunately, he didn’t share what that might be. — Juho Sarvikas (@sarvikas) January 18, 2018 A recent leak suggests the company may announce the Nokia 1, 4, 7 Plus, and 9 sometime this year. It’s possible a few of these models — or all of them — will be revealed at MWC, although nothing has been confirmed yet. Nokia 9 render The Nokia 9 stopped by the FCC in December, giving us a closer look at its specs. It might come with a 5.5-inch QHD OLED display, a dual-camera setup with 13 and 12 MP sensors, and the Snapdragon 835 chipset. Other features include a 3250 mAh battery, 128 GB of expandable storage, and a 5 MP selfie snapper. The Nokia 7 Plus will likely be a small upgrade over the 7, which made its debut back in October 2017. The Nokia 4 is expected to offer mid-range specs, while the Nokia 1 should be an entry-level smartphone that could run Android Go and come with 1 GB of RAM. Sony According to a report from MyDrivers, Sony will reveal a flagship smartphone at MWC. Called the Xperia XZ Pro, it is expected to sport a 5.7-inch OLED display with 4K resolution, the Snapdragon 845 chipset, and 6 GB of RAM. It could be Sony’s first handsets with a dual-camera setup. The report claims it will feature an 18 MP sensor with 1.33μm pixel size and a 12 MP sensor at 1.38μm pixels at the back. Other specs and features include a 3420 mAh battery, 128 GB of storage, and an IP68 rating for protection against water and dust. Images of the Xperia XZ Pro haven’t leaked yet, but you can check out a concept render of the device below. In addition to the high-end XZ Premium and XZs, Sony announced two mid-rangers at MWC 2017. That story likely won’t repeat this year, as the company already took the wraps off three mid-range devices — Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2 — a couple of weeks ago. Lenovo/Motorola Lenovo announced the Moto G5 and G5 Plus at MWC 2017. At this year’s event, the company could unveil the G6 series of smartphones. Images of the Moto G6, G6 Plus, and G6 Play have leaked, giving us a closer look at their designs. All three models look more or less the same, sporting glass backs and big camera bumps — check them out below. Moto G6 Moto G6 Plus Moto G6 Play When it comes to specs, the G6 is said to come with a 5.7-inch Full HD+ display, the Snapdragon 450 chipset, and a 3,000 mAh battery. The Plus model will reportedly feature a 5.93-inch display, the Snapdragon 630 processor, and a 3200 mAh battery. Both devices might come with either 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of storage, although the Plus model might also be offered with 6 GB of RAM. The smartphones are also expected to be equipped with a dual-camera setup sporting 12 and 5 MP sensors. The G6 Play could have a 5.7-inch display and pack a massive 4,000 mAh battery. Other specs such as the chipset and RAM are unknown for now. Additionally, images of the Moto Z3, Z3 Play, and X5 have also leaked. However, these three phones likely won’t be revealed at MWC, although everything is possible. Xiaomi Xiaomi didn’t attend MWC 2017 but will be at the show this year. The company hasn’t confirmed which devices — if any — it will reveal in Barcelona, but rumors have it that we might see the Mi 7 make its debut., The successor to the Mi 6 will be a flagship smartphone said to be powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset. It might feature a 6-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a dual-camera setup on the back. In comparison, its predecessor sports a smaller 5.15-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and the Snapdragon 835 processor. Editor's Pick Xiaomi Mi Max 3 leaked with dual rear-camera setup Xiaomi appears to be working on a Mi Max 2 (pictured above) successor. In a recent leak from Gizmochina (via GSMArena), a device render has appeared that's believed to depict the upcoming handset. The picture reveals … Rumors also claim Xiaomi could take a page out of Apple’s playbook and ditch the fingerprint scanner, opting for facial recognition technology. Xiaomi may also take the wraps off the Mi Mix 2s, a new variant of the Mi Mix 2 which launched in September 2017. Like the Mi 7, it’s expected to come with the Snapdragon 845 processor under the hood and a dual-camera setup on the back. The device is also said to feature 6 GB of RAM, sport an iPhone X-like notch, and carry a price tag of 3000 yuan in China (around $470). A few images claiming to show the device have appeared online in recent weeks but have turned out to be fake. Xiaomi also hasn’t mentioned anything about the Mi Mix 2s, so take this rumor with a grain of salt. There you have it — these are some of the products that might be revealed at MWC 2018. A lot of other well-known brands like HTC, Acer, and Asus will also be present at the show, but there’s no word on which devices they might announce. We’ll update this page as soon as we hear more to keep you up to speed with all the latest. Meanwhile, let us know which products are you most looking forward to in the comments below! , via Android Authority http://bit.ly/2F6AGBj

Good hit, sketchy pitch: Reviewing the Tout Wars mixer
Tumblr media
Ryan Braun is still a building block (AP)
My other car is a Ferrari. That’s basically my story when Tout Wars comes up.
I’ve played in many industry leagues and had my share of success (yes, I know no one cares), but I’ve yet to take down a Tout Wars title. Just two seconds on the resume, and those were a while ago. It’s the white whale of my portfolio, the highest priority. There’s no money in Tout, of course (other than some side props), but the winner gets to name a sandwich at the next year’s party at Foley’s in NYC.
And I’m all about enjoying every sandwich.
The last three years in the Tout Mixer, I’ve finished 6th, 6th and 7th (out of 15 teams). It means I’m finishing ahead of the majority of competitors, but not getting a good swing at the title. We all know, there’s no trophy for finishing in the top half or so. This isn’t some 50-50 contest or double-up.
[Sign up for Yahoo Fantasy Baseball: Get in the game and join a league today]
Last year I probably screwed up a good chance at deep contention, securing a pretty good team at auction and then skidding off the road. I hit on Wil Myers and Kyle Hendricks, two pet sleepers, and also got Daniel Murphy for a scant $8. If all the Tout teams were forced to play with the draft-day rosters, I would have finished in first. Alas, I had a so-so year with FAABing and made a few dreadful deals, and with that I meandered down the standings. So it goes.
I’m a feel player at any auction. I don’t have a set strategy or a cutesy acronym I’m trying to establish. I have a rough idea of what a player’s range is, and in the early portion of an auction, I’m looking to buy players at or below cost (keeping in mind, if you’re going to pay market or even market-plus for anyone, make sure it’s a player you really want or really like).
Once the auction gets deeper, it’s more about playing poker. I keep close tabs on the financial personality of the auction — budgets, needs, max bids — and try to read what someone’s intentions are, especially on midgame and late bids. Do they really want the player? Are they trying to move the price up? Would they be screwed, for lack of a better term, if stuck with the current bid?
Over the years I’ve gotten pretty good at reading a room, knowing when I can nudge someone along and knowing when to get out. I also want any auction room to feel I might back off a bid at any time, so I’m not easy to push around. I feel I’ve stuck opponents with bids far more often than I’ve been stuck myself. But again, until they’re eating my sandwich at Foley’s, none of this matters very much.
Two more things to consider as we look deeper into the 2017 Mixed Auction — a word about pace and context.
My buddy Jeff Erickson of Rotowire was the auctioneer, and he runs a very quick, tight auction. There’s no time to do research or much second-level thinking — you’re pressed for instant decisions at every turn. Although not every auction is run this way, this is how it should be, especially within the industry. But it also means that sometimes you wind up in the quicksand before you’ve had a second to consider the step you’re taking.
As with any auction, the prices are heavily dependent on when the players were nominated and how the room was calibrated at the time. Prices observed out of context don’t tell a fair, complete story. Tout also offers a rebate for players who encounter serious injury, which means some of the endgame players will be bought for budget-draining resources, just to maximize their possible reclaim value later. There’s no reason to leave money on the table, even table scraps.
A few loose strategies, subject to adjustment as needed, that I took into the draft:
— I wasn’t going to sweat stolen bases. They’re more scarce in today’s game, sure, but that means it’s easier to compete in the category. If I needed to fix my steals situation in the reserve draft, in free agency, or through trade, that’s not a concern. You can always find speed later; I don’t want to overpay for it with premium chips.
— I wanted a foundation of saves without paying for the elite guys. This just feels like the sweet spot to invest, most of the time. Saves will also enter the league every year, like steals will, but it feels like the newly-minted closers (or even the closing spec plays) are more contested than the rabbits are.
— My big-money purchases are likely to be hitters. Offense still feels more reliable to me, more floor offered, while pitchers have more risk involved. There also tends to be more divergence of opinion for pitchers after you get past the Top 30 or so — I think Mike Salfino has been saying that for years — and that usually means it’s easier to get your later-pitching targets than it is hitting targets. Consider Hendricks at $4 last year.
So what actually happened in this thing? How did we do?
I liked the final roster, didn’t love it. I quickly got my feet wet with a number of big-name bats (Machado, Lindor, Myers, Lucroy, Braun), and I’m fine with all of them. I also landed Zach Britton ($19) and Kelvin Herrera ($14) for reasonable prices, and I even added cheaper saves later. But the secondary and tertiary aces I was angling towards — names like Julio Teheran and Kenta Maeda — went for more money than I wanted, and I wound up being a pitcher or two short, talent-wise. (If I was the suspicious type, I’d say writing What’s In My Wallet mid-March winds up hurting me, opening my playbook too wide. But maybe it’s just coincidence; other people are allowed to like the good players I like.)
Time for the full roster. We use 5×5 scoring, with OBP subbed in for batting average. (Full results are here; make sure you click the Mix Auction tab at the top. You can also toggle to other Tout results, if you wish.)
Tumblr media
Texas Two Step (AP)
— Catchers: Jonathan Lucroy $22, Sandy Leon $1
I thought Buster Posey might be back on my team last year, off a disappointing 2016, but he went for a full-on $28. Lucroy and Gary Sanchez ($21) essentially went for the same amount, and I’ll bet on the proven player every time in that instance. The Rangers also have a much deeper lineup than the Yankees do; does everyone realize New York finished 22nd in scoring last year? This is not a good team.
No one takes Leon’s season at face value, but he can give a lot back and still be worth a buck. If he can merely hold the job and get some part of the Fenway undertow, I’ll be happy. If not, I’ll be fishing in the FA pool.
— Corners: Wil Myers $25, Manny Machado $39, Adrian Gonzalez $8
Machado was my first purchase with the idea that he’s a good shortstop or third baseman, but he eventually fit into my roster at third. I don’t care if he runs again or not, he’s going to be a strong base in the other four categories. And heck, if he doesn’t run, maybe it keeps him healthy. I also like my top purchase being on someone who’s a high-pedigree player at a tender age (Machado turns 25 in July), in the hitter’s league and in a home-run park. All those boxes check here.
Myers has been hurt a few times, but is he more injury prone or accident prone? Does everyone realize Petco is no longer the Death Valley park it used to be? I’ll concede Myers has to carry some health risk, but I am not at all concerned about what he’ll do when he is healthy. And like most younger, healthy players, the bases are there if wanted. Myers wants to keep running, apparently.
No one likes Gonzalez this year, me included. But I’ll eat my hat if he’s not worth $8.
— Middles: Daniel Murphy $23, Francisco Lindor $26, Dustin Pedroia $11
Go where the runs are, right? Boston was the top offense last year (by runs), Cleveland fifth, Washington eighth (and I expect the Nats to run away with that division this year, and move up this list). For reasonable prices, I’ve landed key members of three very good offenses.
Pedroia turned out to be a roster construction mistake, however, because he was a later purchase — when the money would have fit my pitching staff better. Ultimately, a number of solid middle infield options went for less than $11 — and some just a couple of bucks. No knock on Pedroia, but I should have bought a cheaper MI and used the extra bucks on the mound.
— Outfield/Utility: Ryan Braun $30, Jackie Bradley $10, Kendrys Morales $6, Melky Cabrera $2, Michael Saunders $1, Kolten Wong $1
I can’t claim Braun is a giveaway at that price, but what’s not to like? He’s a proven and versatile performer who has shown a willingness — and a capability — of playing hurt. A rock-solid place to invest your money.
Bradley has pros and cons, but I’ll be happy to find out at $10. Morales only qualifies at DH in Tout — he’s first base and outfield in Yahoo — but I would have chased him up a few more bucks. He was excellent last year and now moves to a better backdrop. Cabrera is a boring Ibanez All-Star, Saunders the same thing.
Wong? I wish the Cardinals liked him as much as I do. I misjudged the strength of the $1 market at the time (when David Peralta later went for a buck, I wanted to throw up). I’d need an extra outfielder or two in the reserve draft.
Pretty good offense overall, right? Well, it came with a shoe to drop — one of the sketchiest pitching staffs in the room. I only spent $55 on those nine guys, and most of it ($35) went on three relievers. (I never shoot for a hitting/pitching ratio, by the way. I think that sort of aim winds up being too constricting in the actual proceedings. I realize some people play differently, and have had success as such. That’s fine, too.)
— Starting Pitching: Jameson Taillon $9, Matt Shoemaker $6, Ian Kennedy, $2, Junior Guerra $1, Jeremy Hellickson $1, Alex Cobb $1
Say whatever you want, but I love my pitching staff for what it should be — the second and third tier of a balanced diet. There are 1-2 pitchers missing at the top, though. It’s unlikely to expect that I’ll fill those types of slots through FAABing — talent like that is unlikely to emerge, after we take about 120 starting pitchers off the board.
I’ll fight for Taillon, Shoemaker and Kennedy all day — as your No. 3-5 arms. Tallion has the right park, defense, pedigree, pitching coach — and he was strong in his debut. Shoemaker became a different pitcher after he refined his splitter. Kennedy is a boring, stealth vet who can easily make me a profit here.
Guerra? I’ll blame Salfino if it fails. Hellickson? Lucky last year, but he’s in a good division. Cobb is worth a speculation play for a buck. I know this is my team weakness, but in a deeper mixed league, everyone will have an underbelly somewhere.
(I should also mention I nominated Mike Foltynewicz for a dollar, at a time when just one owner could trump in. And voila, Derek Van Riper said $2, much to my chagrin. Make sure Folty’s on your lottery-ticket list.)
— Relief Pitching: Zack Britton $19, Kelvin Herrera $14, Ryan Madson $2
Britton has as long a leash as any closer, and Herrera was one of the rare Wallet guys I was able to land. Madson has obvious fleas and plenty of competition, but even if he’s in the middle of a committee, it’s easy to earn a profit here.
— Bench: Kevin Pillar, Trevor Bauer, Mallex Smith, Seth Smith, Zack Wheeler, Raul Mondesi
By using Rotowire’s draft software, paying attention, and staying fresh, I always expect I’ll make solid reserve-round picks (and not pick anyone who’s already selected; that happens a few times every year). Last year I hit on Rajai Davis and Madson; the previous year, I clicked on Trevor Plouffe. Pillar, Mondesi and Mallex Smith address my stolen-base gap; Seth Smith is an on-base machine; and maybe Bauer and Wheeler will be useful starters, somewhere above the Stream Police.
My only goal at the auction is to build a team that looks like a reasonable contender, and I think I’ve accomplished that. I like my offense and love where I spent my big tickets; players who offer a combination of floor and upside. I don’t have a great speed team, but it won’t take much to go right for that to be fixed. The starting staff is undeniably weak; the closers, on paper, pretty strong.
For whatever projections mean to you, here’s what they say: Clay Davenport’s numbers have me in second, Rotowire’s have me in fifth (an eyelash out of third; I didn’t input the reserve players), and Baseball HQ’s have me in the bottom half. That’s enough validation for me. Projections fly out of mind and memory the moment a real pitch is thrown.

Overview of cameras in the multi-camera smartphones
Tumblr media
For several years, smartphones have been steadily leading in popularity in the consumer electronics segment. Enormous competition encourages companies to constantly expand the functionality of their models. For example, companies already offer Projector Mobile Phones with a projector function, including Blackview MAX 1 Projector Mobile Phone.
Tumblr media
But as before, the choice of optimal smartphone depends on its price, brand and specs, including OS, smartphone performance, Smartphone Storage, screen, etc.
Smartphone cameras
Of course, the camera also belongs to the most important specs of a modern smartphone. In recent years, almost all leading companies have been actively improving the cameras of their models, including by increasing the number of modules. As a result, today the market offers smartphones with different numbers of lenses in different combinations. Many modern phones, including budget models, already use two modules, but many flagships have 3 or even 4 cameras. For example, in 2018 Samsung introduced the Galaxy A9 (2018) with Main Camera and three additional, including Ultra-Wide, Telefoto (optical zoom), and Depth cameras.
Tumblr media
But at the end of February at the MWC-2019 in Barcelona, HMD Global already introduced the Nokia 9 PureView with five cameras.
Tumblr media
Nokia 9 uses Zeiss optics, provides a 12-MP picture, saves the image in RAW format, providing its editing on a smartphone. It has two color 12-MP, f / 1.82 cameras and three black and white with similar parameters. In addition, the smartphone uses a 20-MP front camera. Finally, Sony announced a model with 8 cameras, including 20-MP f/2.4, 48-MP f/1.2 and f/2, 16-MP f/2.4, 8-MP f/2.4, 12-MP f/1.2 and f/2.4, and 0.5-MP ToF lenses on the rear panel.
Tumblr media
In addition, it has front 10-MP and 0.3-MP ToF cameras providing Portrait Mode.
Tumblr media
Basic cameras
Functionally, smartphones with dual cameras can be divided into several types. The second camera can be used as a Depth or Ultra-Wide, for zooming or night shooting (monochrome camera). Additionally, such models can collect data for portraiture or other effects, eliminating the need for a dedicated sensor. Thus, dual cameras provide greater flexibility, providing improved quality for different shooting conditions. For example, Telephoto lens provides background blur and optical zoom without loss of quality. In 2016, Apple first used it in the iPhone 7 Plus. The experiment was successful and today many companies use it. Until 2019, their optical magnification did not exceed 2x or 3x. But today the Huawei P30 Pro, Oppo Reno and Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 already support 5x.
Tumblr media
A wide-angle camera provides 120 degrees, capturing more objects in the frame. In 2016, LG first introduced the flagship with such a lens. At the end of 2018, Samsung and Huawei began to install a similar module in some expensive models. Today, the Galaxy S10 uses an ultra-wide 123 degree lens.
Tumblr media
The black and white camera works in tandem with the main module and provides improved light capture in low light conditions. In 2018, Sony installed such a camera in the Xperia XZ2 Premium. In the 2018 Oppo RX17 Pro and Honor View 20 was first used the 3D ToF (Time of Flight) stereo camera. The 3D sensor provides scanning of objects to form a 3D image.
The number of cameras in the modern smartphone
Of course, adding a third camera further expanded the functionality. As known, Huawei P20 Pro was the first such model. It has a 40-megapixel main module, a 8-MP telephoto camera with 3x zoom, and a 20-megapixel monochromatic camera. The combination of such optics and effective software provided excellent zoom and high quality even in low light conditions.
Tumblr media
Нuawei has previously already used hybrid technology with a monochrome camera to improve images in low light and to increase digital zoom. But the combination of a 3x telephoto lens and a 40-megapixel high-resolution matrix in the P20 Pro ensured high quality even for 5x zoom. The LG V40 also uses three cameras, including a 12-MP main camera, a 12-MP lens with 2x zoom, and a 16-MP wide-angle camera. This combination provides excellent quality for almost any shooting condition.
Tumblr media
However, Samsung took the next step by adding a fourth module. Its Galaxy A9 (2018) uses main, telephoto, wide-angle and 5-megapixel Depth modules. Of course, such a decision may seem controversial because the wide-angle and zoom cameras provide information about the frame depth. For example, the Live Focus feature in Galaxy Note 8, 9, and S9 Plus uses telephoto camera data. But the addition of a special sensor exclusively for frame depth increases the detail, improving the image quality in portrait mode and creating a bokeh effect.
Tumblr media
For this purpose, other companies often use a monochrome camera instead of the Depth module.
Dimensions
Unlike the large cases of traditional digital SLR cameras, smartphones have a very limited internal volume. Its slim body should include a screen, chipset, battery and other components. Therefore, companies use very compact matrices for smartphone cameras. As a result, they capture significantly less luminous flux compared to the much larger matrices of full-size cameras. Today, developers use sophisticated image creation algorithms, including Image Averaging, etc. In general, adding new modules requires reducing the sensor size of each camera, reducing the size of other components, or changing the phone design. But the first method radically reduces the image quality, and the second method degrades other specs of the device. Thus, a design change remains the only acceptable way. Perhaps new models with a large number of cameras will be thicker or will have a protrusion near the lenses. In addition, this trend has another aspect. A similar situation was already in the photo industry segment. A few years ago, Light introduced a 52-megapixel Light L16 with 16 cameras.
Tumblr media
The focal length of their lenses varies from 28 to 150 mm. Theoretically, it should provide high-quality zoom with a resolution of up to 52 MP. Unfortunately, the low speed of creating a picture, the need to use the Light Lumen app for most settings, and the huge variation in frame quality have radically limited its popularity. Therefore, adding cameras without high-performance software can create many additional problems.
Conclusion
Fierce competition encourages companies to actively expand the functionality of smartphones by increasing the number of cameras and improving their collaboration algorithms. Of course, this aspect affects the choice of the optimal model. Probably, at some stage, factors of price, device size and control complexity will limit this trend. But modern models already offer from two cameras in the mid-budget segment to an unprecedented 8 cameras in the new Sony smartphone. This video illustrates the effectiveness of dual camera operation in the Xperia XZ2 Premium. Read the full article
