Reminds me of a video a US-American made about their immigration to Germany. I could not find the original I watched, but I remember this part:
She said she was asked where she's from and proceeded to give the poor office worker her ancestor's countries of origin before being stopped like: Ma'am, I do not care where your grandparents were born, where were you born?
And then she said something about how flabbergasting it was to just be considered an American by this person. Because apparently, while being Afro-American set her apart back home, it was also part of her identity, which she felt like she lost.
Personally, I don't care if Americans want to say they are German. Because then, I can always just go:
"Ach, ehrlich, Kollege? Geil, lass ma' die Tage Mettbrötchen essen!"
'yeah im german' (is a usamerican born and raised in usamerica with a german ancestor)
