It was on the bright cold morning of 21 December 2018 that the stalwarts of the CBM Industry met at CBM Asset Bokaro for a two day Technical Interaction on the CBM operations –issues and way forward. The Interactive Session was chaired by Asset Manager, CBM Asset, Bokaro Mr. V K Gupta and CMD CMPDIL Mr. Shekhar Saran was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Managing Director & CEO of M/s Essar Oil and Gas, Exploration and Production Ltd Mr. Vilas Tawde was the Guest of Honor on the occasion. This was also attended by a plethora of representatives of all the other players of CBM Business viz. Reliance Industries Limited, Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Prabha Energy Private Limited, CIMFR, IOCL BCCL, besides senior officers of ONGC CBM Asset and the industry partners.

Speaking on the occasion Asset Manager, CBM Asset Mr. V K Gupta enumerated that this was the maiden occasion, when the who’s who of the CBM fraternity met at a common platform to discuss the operational and regulatory issues on the production of CBM for the energy security of the Nation. He further added that there should in-fact be more such structured meets to mitigate problems and issues that the industry is and may be facing in the future. CBM industry in India and its operational practices are still evolving with the ample scope of optimization in terms of operational efficacy, cost and time.

CMD CMPDIL (Central Mine Planning and Design Institute, Ranchi) Mr. Shekhar Saran congratulated the industry for the efforts made to come up to this forum for an amazingly very fruitful and candid knowledge sharing of CBM exploration and production in the field of Geology, Geophysics, LAQ, Drilling, Well services, Surface and Maintenance of equipments related issues, for the mutual benefit of the industry markers. He further stressed that such classroom knowledge sharing should be intermingled with field visits for the first hand experience with the ground realities. He added that CBM is clean energy and can make significant contribution to the Urja Ganga dream project of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. He also further elaborated that the US Shale gas has revolutionized the Oil Balance equation of the World; similarly India should also overcome the impediments of the Shale gas production and start the venture of Shale Gas exploration & production also.Managing Director & CEO of M/s Essar Oil and Gas, Exploration and Production Ltd Mr. Vilas Tawde said that this is the maiden congregation of the clean coal fraternity, an industry with reserves of 18.5 TCM, and with the regulatory order of pricing freedom given to the CBM industry is a welcome move forward. He added that RIL/ONGC/GEECL & Essar combined can contribute up to 1% of the 10% reduction in the oil and oil equivalent gas import dependence that the industry had been entrusted with by the GOI in by 2022. He hoped that CBM production will reach up to 8.5 MMSCMD by next year, with the added contributions from ONGC and RIL. He further added that CBM is cheaper than LNG by about 6$/MMBtu and should therefore be a more preferred source of energy other than Natural Gas, moreover methane gas getting into the atmosphere is 25 times more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. Therefore CBM, CMM and AMM should be extracted prior to mining of Coal in a mutually beneficial and in a harmonious manner.The veterans having vast experience and understanding of Indian CBM reservoirs as well as global CBM production like San-Juan Basin of USA-the best in the World, deliberated threadbare the practices followed in the CBM exploitation. Intent was to crystalize the best industry bench marks on CBM Operations like LAQ, Drilling, Reservoir modelling, Perforation, Hydrofacturing, Well-completion, Surface Facilities, of CBM production and transportation. The following major technical aspects were discussed and deliberated during meeting:
Perforation intervals need to be optimized with respect to the depth of coal seams, nearby aquifer, gas content /contribution from the zone etc.
In view of the continuous dewatering from artificial lift systems, it was emphasized that vertical wells are best suited for extraction of CBM.
Domain Expert on CBM, incidentally and ex-ONGCian suggested that drilling isolated wells & dewatering thereafter become cost intensive with respect to the deployment of DG set & manpower. Hence, feasibility of a centrally supplied power system may be looked into so that operation of the SRP/PCP through DG/GG sets are avoided and power is supplied centrally and scattered maintenance can therefore be avoided.
It was desired to keep the wells vertical. However, it was also devised that in view of difficulties in LAQ, the asset can resort to PAD drilling but the completion should be made more technology oriented, for example running the SRP with molded guides for increasing the life of artificial lift and reduction of frequent work-over interval.
There should be continuous updation of geological parameters alongside the development drilling, so as to come out with an appropriate placement of the well and device a robust reservoir model.
The comingled HF& completion at times take prolonged dewatering in order to realize the gas break-in. Therefore based on the understanding of specific reservoir characteristic select perforation / HF & dewatering may be resorted to for early gas break-in & subsequent early revenue generation.
As far as gas sale is concerned, it was deliberated that the Asset should first consolidate good number of wells & establish CBM production followed by consolidated marketing approach. However, cascade system for small quantities for early monetization may continue to be pursued as a feasible model.
In his closing remarks and while presenting the vote of thanks, Asset Manager CBM Asset reiterated that such domain centric interaction in high technology industry such as CBM is the need of the hour, and the interest of the industry should be paramount than the interest of the company and an industry model should emerge so that everyone should benefit from experience pitfalls of one-another. In all it was a very fruitful two day deliberation & discussion and hoped for brighter days ahead for CBM Industry. In this pursuit another such interaction is being planned on specific aspects in February 2019 and that this interactive session was a “Mission Accomplished”.
