The most obvious benefit of upgrading the Meta Quest 3 lens is that it will improve the visual quality of the games. The original lenses were known for their low-quality visuals, which made it difficult to immerse yourself in the game. Upgrading to higher-quality lenses will improve the visuals, making it easier to immerse yourself in the game.
👉Better Comfort
Another benefit of upgrading the Meta Quest 3 lens is that it will increase comfort. The original lenses were known for being uncomfortable, and some users even experienced eye strain after using it for long periods of time. Currently I am also 3/4ths of the way through Convergence (which I am enjoying very much, Path of Deceit is probably still my favorite of Phase II, but I think this one might be my second favorite, Lydia Kang's writing is really working for me here), halfway through Starlight Stories, and on episode 18 of Young Jedi Adventures. All of it continues to be fun and I'm still impressed by the sheer number of moving parts that feel like they all fit well together and there are few individual moments that I feel the need to yell about, but what I think I would recommend this project for most is that feeling of a large scope story that's told throughout so many mediums and gives a sense of satisfaction for it. I don't approach The High Republic in the same way I necessarily do the originals or the prequels, I'm not personally really into it for fanworks (though, some of the fanart really scratches a nice itch) or a ton of meta (I tend to have prequels brain so my meta does get filtered through the lens of 'how does this parallel the prequels'), instead it's more of a story to experience. A really, really big story with a ton of characters that come and go and some really beautiful art to go along with it. I have affection for it and I could see it being a fanworks kind of jam for others, but I think it's also okay if you want to get into it just for the experience of a fun Star Wars spinoff series, however you approach THR is fine! So, speaking of, how's everyone else's progress going? Have some of you picked it up recently? Made progress? Still in Phase I or are you caught up to Phase III? (Honestly, I think my favorite so far was Phase II, I feel like the world had settled into what it wanted to be and I liked the characters a lot in it, which makes me very curious how Phase III is going to go, now that they've had two phases to get their feet under them.)

should i read homestuck. like i feel it would be interesting so i could see what yall are talking about in regards to tlt but is homestuck actually good
"is homestuck good" - the greatest thread in the history of forums, locked by a moderator after 8129 pages of heated debate,
no but seriously, it highkey depends on 1. your definition of good and 2. your tolerance for stupid bullshit. as someone who read tlt and then hs, i'd say that being a fan of the chaotic aspect of tlt is a good predictor of being able to hang in with homestuck.
readmore because this. um. got long. the tl;dr is: i like homestuck a lot and i am glad i read it. i can't tell you if you should read it bc idk your tastes, but there is a lot to like and enjoy about it.
the official pitch for homestuck is something like "4 kids play a game and then a bunch of other shit happens." here's my pitch based on what the core of the story is to me:
several groups of characters across time, space, and reality are brought together in order to succeed at creating a new universe after their own are destroyed. this takes the form of a game, which is called sburb (by the humans) and sgrub (by the trolls). the characters must contend with an eternal battle against good and evil in which they are the deciding factor, and level up while following personalized quests. at its heart, homestuck is about relationships of every sort and how they shape us, growing up and the associated grief and loss, coming into ones identity and choosing who to be, predestination and fate, and stories themselves. it gets very meta at times, and the characters are semi to fully aware that they're characters, and attempt to subvert or escape that. it's got hordes of fleshed out, compelling characters, one of which will almost certainly glom onto you for the rest of your life, real emotion, extremely funny jokes, smart and exciting plotting, and some very cool moments. it more or less invented an entire new genre/medium, and plays with medium in a very cool way.
it is also clunky, hard to get into, and way too convoluted. you will never fully understand what's happening. there are tons of characters whose stories you will follow whom you simply do not care about. there are too many characters. it was written by an edgelord in 2009 so there's some unsavory humor and character writing. it's so fucking long. the ending kinda sucks because the fandom was so toxic that hussie simply wanted it over with. the fandom still kinda sucks tbh. so many people have wrong opinions about it. it requires a very specific lens to approach and understand it. i still dont understand what happened with that fucking puppet someone explain it to me.
overall, i'd say that if you think you want to read it, give it a shot. i have a complicated relationship with it but at the end of the day, i genuinely love the story and the characters and i know they will be with me forever. it certainly enhanced my understanding of tlt, and getting to read more of tamsyn's writing was such a bonus (even though her taste in pairings is. not the same as my own). and like honestly. it's just fun. even when you're going "wait what the fuck just happened" you're having fun. it's really goddamn funny too. it WILL change the way you speak and also think about romance forever.
the best way to read it is to have an experienced reader guide you, but if you or other people don't know anyone like that, here are my basic tips:
i think most people know this already, but download the unofficial homestuck collection. just do it. it's like 4 gigs and it's infinitely better than trying to read on the broken website, and it's even ad free. it can also be modded - for instance ik there's a slur replacer mod (lmao) if you don't want to read those
act 1 sucks to read. you're like what the fuck is this, THIS is homestuck?? the beginning is radically different from how it ends up, so just hang in there. for me, it really picked up somewhere in act 3. just focus on the silly fun the characters are having and you'll be good
things you should actually try to follow in the early acts: the concept of a sylladex existing (the various fetch modi are only there for jokes and eventually just kinda stop being a thing), where all the copies of the game are, what each kid's relationship with their guardian is like, the mechanics of the game and the lore behind it, including classpects and quests
things you do not have to waste brain space on: anything about how the totems work, what the various machines are, what the levels are, basically any of the jokes that would be funny to hussie's original intended audience of software engineers and rpg gamers. oh and the intermission with the midnight crew and the felt, just know that those are guys that exist and you'll be good.
and the biggest tip i have is just. go with it. suspend your disbelief. a lot of the worldbuilding doesn't really make sense, but it would be a worse story if it did. when the time shit and ectobiology come into play, literally just go ok got it and keep going, don't think too hard.
so yeah i don't even know if any of this is useful but i hope it helps you decide. and if you or anyone else have follow up questions send em!

"Hamlet" by William Shakespeare is one of the most iconic and frequently adapted plays in the literary canon. Its exploration of themes such as revenge, madness, and existentialism has inspired numerous adaptations across various mediums. Here's an in-depth analysis of "Hamlet" and some notable adaptations:
### "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare:
1. **Existentialism and Moral Ambiguity:**
- "Hamlet" is renowned for its exploration of existential themes. The protagonist, Prince Hamlet, grapples with moral ambiguity, contemplating life, death, and the consequences of revenge. The famous soliloquy "To be or not to be" encapsulates these existential reflections.
2. **Madness and Deception:**
- Hamlet's feigned madness and the broader theme of deception add layers to the narrative. The play explores the thin line between reality and illusion, raising questions about the authenticity of appearances.
3. **Complex Characters:**
- Characters like Claudius, Gertrude, Ophelia, and Polonius contribute to the complexity of the play. Each character has intricate motives and relationships, adding depth to the exploration of human nature.
4. **Dramatic Irony:**
- Shakespeare employs dramatic irony throughout the play, where the audience possesses knowledge that some characters lack. This creates tension and engages the audience in the unfolding tragedy.
5. **Ghost Motif:**
- The appearance of King Hamlet's ghost introduces the supernatural element and sets the revenge plot in motion. The ghost serves as a catalyst for Hamlet's internal conflict and moral dilemma.
### Notable Adaptations:
1. **"The Lion King" (1994):**
- This animated film draws clear parallels with "Hamlet," portraying Simba's journey mirroring Hamlet's quest for justice and self-discovery. The uncle Scar corresponds to Claudius, adding a familial and Shakespearean dimension to the Disney classic.
2. **"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" (1990):**
- Tom Stoppard's play and subsequent film take a unique perspective, focusing on two minor characters from "Hamlet." It explores existential themes and the concept of fate, providing a meta-theatrical commentary on the original play.
3. **"Hamlet" (1996) - Directed by Kenneth Branagh:**
- Branagh's film adaptation offers a faithful rendition of the play, emphasizing its theatrical roots. The unabridged version allows for a comprehensive exploration of the characters and themes, staying true to the original text.
4. **"Hamlet" (2000) - Directed by Michael Almereyda:**
- Set in modern-day New York, this adaptation features Ethan Hawke as Hamlet. The contemporary setting introduces new layers to the play's exploration of power, corruption, and surveillance.
5. **"Hamlet" (1948) - Directed by Laurence Olivier:**
- Olivier's film, a more traditional adaptation, won several Academy Awards. It is praised for its visual aesthetics and Olivier's nuanced portrayal of Hamlet.
6. **"Hamlet" (2015) - Directed by Kenneth Branagh:**
- Branagh returned to "Hamlet" in 2015, this time focusing on the character's internal struggles. The film explores Hamlet's psychological state and emphasizes the emotional depth of the play.
### Common Themes Across Adaptations:
1. **Reinterpretation of Characters:**
- Different adaptations may reinterpret characters, offering new perspectives on their motivations and actions.
2. **Modernization and Contextual Shifts:**
- Many adaptations place "Hamlet" in different time periods or cultural contexts, highlighting its universality and adaptability.
3. **Focus on Specific Themes:**
- Some adaptations emphasize particular themes such as political intrigue, mental health, or familial relationships, providing a fresh lens on the original material.
In conclusion, "Hamlet" continues to captivate audiences through its timeless exploration of human nature and existential dilemmas. Its adaptability to various mediums and reinterpretation across diverse contexts underscore its enduring relevance in the realm of literature and performance.

I'm not posting enough, let alone blogging enough! Here's to you with a review of the Quest 2 from my 3 hours or so of gameplay, idk.
My friends gifted me the VR headset formerly known as Oculus Quest 2, formally as Meta Quest 2, and even though I have an utterly incapable laptop the fact it can work on its own makes it a cool experience.
The setup was a cool experience in and of itself, even - I was blasted away by the graphics, having never experienced VR, and after a while I got it up and running.
Using it is cool, and it even allows me to use glasses. I hear you say: "But why do you need glasses? Isn't the screen up in your face? Literally?". And to that I say... well probably there's some lens magic refraction tech magic going on to allow for depth perception as God [i'm not religious shut up] intended, so glasses are a given.
You can use your controllers to point and use triggers, sure, and you can use hand tracking to break your fingers instead of your controller when you inevitably punch your closet (more on that later), but did you know there is a secret third way to do things? When you're using controllers, the Quest is so kind that it shows you your hands' outline around the controller: you can use the FINGERS OF THE OUTLINE to press on the UI. THE DIGITAL HAND!! That's cool.
About punching closets, there's some countermeasures! Three of them and then some. Boundaries come in two flavors: Stationary and Roomscale. The former is just a circle for when you sit down or stand still, but really, you might as well go the pro gamer way by defining a room-scale (eh? get it?) boundary so that it may fit your room's shape better. The third way is Passthrough. The 144p, 15 fps, black and white cameras kick in, and suddenly virtual reality is just a bank security camera. You can use it for a cool menu, mixed-reality games, or have it turn on when you go out of the boundaries you set so you see where the hell you're going.
The game selection appears to be quite cool, honestly. Job Simulator, Car Mechanic Simulator, Simulator Simulator, Super Simulacrum Simulator Returns XXAC+R The Definitive Trilogy Nintendo Switch, it's all here! I didn't pour any money into the Quest as of yet, mainly due to my mother being all pissy at the sight of me spending anything on virtual commodities, but I guess I've played Gorilla Tag...?
Gorilla Tag is just as shown on social media: native English-speaking pre-teens will yell at you their know-it-all monkey jargon about how to walljump, juke, korean backdash and solve antiderivatives. It's like you were playing Getting Over It with your arms, and it's most serviceable as a glorified VRChat with a hint of bananas and tea. 8/10 would pay, like, 5 bucks? It's free anyways.
I've also played some Roblox games experiences with VR-Exclusive features. Crazy Stairs among them is a game where usually you'd climb up a set of platforms interconnected by platforms using powers to aid you or fuck over other people... on VR you scratch the climbing aspect and just mess around. Fun, really! VR Hangouts also exist: non-VR players run around in this comically massive map, and VR players are this comically massive floating head with comically massive floating hands that they can use to fling non-VR players around to kingdom come, slap them into the atmosphere, or just play with the comically massive props. Also fun, also free, would not pay five bucks but definitely refreshing.
What about Steam games? You can play them, if you have a PC able to handle them. I can't, so I'm stuck with the Oculus' Meta Store: the one-stop shop for hardcore golf players and the maniacs that want WhatsApp on their headset.
It performs well, despite having a phone's GPU. All games in the Meta Store were carefully optimized for standalone gaming, and Steam games run on your PC, so you're strapped in for an adventure of whimsy and motion sickness!
Talking about motion sickness, I had none. Maybe after laying down while playing GT I got weirded out a bit - your PoV does not move vertically with your headset, so finding myself kneeling but still standing at the same time was slightly disorienting?
Another nitpick is that the charger is, hear me out, USB-C TO USB-C. You pretty much have to use its own charger, but that's okay really.
Overall: make sure to have enough room to fling your arms about and try to stop your mother from taking silly pictures of you with the headset on.

The Future of VR and AR: Samsung's Bet on Micro OLED Technology
Samsung Display CEO believes micro OLED technology will revolutionize the VR and AR market by 2027-2028
The use of micro OLED technology in virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) headsets has been gaining traction among enthusiasts due to its improved response times, deeper blacks, and higher resolution per eye. While not widely adopted yet, industry experts believe that micro OLED is the next logical step for VR and AR devices. Samsung, known for its expertise in display technology, is now positioning itself to lead the way in this emerging market.
In a recent lecture at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Samsung Display CEO Choi Joo-Sun expressed his belief in the significant market potential of micro OLED technology. He stated that the market will begin in earnest around 2027-2028, citing the need to overcome various technical aspects and cost considerations before wide adoption can occur.
youtube
The Advantages of Micro OLED Technology in VR/AR Headsets
Micro OLED technology offers several advantages over traditional OLED displays in VR/AR headsets. With just a small one-inch diagonal lens, micro OLED provides improved response times, deeper blacks, and higher resolution per eye. These enhancements enhance the overall immersive experience for users and create a more realistic virtual environment.
One notable example of micro OLED implementation is the Bigscreen Beyond, a desktop headset that showcases the potential of VR technology. However, due to the high cost associated with micro OLED displays, leading brands like Meta and Valve have yet to adopt this technology in their mainstream headsets.
Samsung's Vision for VR and AR Headsets
With the success of products like the Valve Index and Meta Quest 3, as well as the growing interest in augmented reality devices like the Apple Vision Pro, the market for VR and AR headsets is poised for significant growth. Recognizing this opportunity, Samsung is setting its sights on developing VR and AR headsets equipped with micro OLED technology.
While 2027 may seem far off, the VR industry moves at a deliberate pace, and Samsung understands the importance of careful market observation and preparation. The affordability of micro OLED technology will need to improve before widespread adoption can occur. In the meantime, enthusiast products like the Bigscreen Beyond and the rumored Meta Quest Pro iteration will serve as testing grounds for these advancements.
The future of VR and AR is closely tied to the development and adoption of micro OLED technology. Samsung, with its display expertise, is positioning itself to lead the market in this area. While the widespread adoption of micro OLED in VR and AR headsets may still be several years away, the potential for enhanced immersive experiences and realistic virtual environments is promising.
As the market continues to evolve, consumers can look forward to more affordable and advanced VR and AR headsets that leverage micro OLED technology.
Whether you already own a PCVR headset or recently purchased a Meta Quest 3, the VR gaming landscape is constantly expanding. Check out our recommendations for the best VR games available now, and stay tuned for future releases that will take advantage of the latest advancements in VR technology.

:-) thanks for the details! I think what you're getting at is separating the gameplay options presented to the player from the events that Artemy experiences and choices he makes. I don't agree that these can be separated at all, due to the format of a video game - it's distinct from a non-interactive medium because the given options are parts of the narrative regardless of whether they're subjectively chosen on a playthrough. The player doesn't strictly have to take the discussed player choices, but they are put there with intention, and reflect what the writers considered valuable parts of the story to include. Gameplay as storytelling device is also the basis of p2's survival mechanics, especially deaths, so I don't see the value of selectively not including how the dialogue/quest mechanics are arranged to direct the player's experience. For the meta of the game being written to support characters dying + the fact that the game ends, if these aren't considered as influences on the character writing, then its flaws just become more striking - those both soften/explain the lack of weight!
The kids definitely do challenge their parents more extremely than in 1 (original post paragraph 3), but it doesn't overrule choices made about them or the lack of response to those choices. (Grace being taken into foster care doesn't involve Artemy choosing to do it or impacting the situation at all, unless you don't do the quest, in which case she just dies.) For Isidor specifically, I don't agree that either Diurnal or Nocturnal can mean rejecting his vision - you still make the choice he poses to you and retie the Town together in a new, "stable" form - meaning the only rejection options are Late/Deal which the writers haaate you for choosing, as discussed. I do really enjoy Aspity and Lara being opposing influences on this - it's the kind of tension and direction that I see as absent from the kids except Taya (although, it also sucks that Lara's influence here is 50% thru the lens of her racism, and in general that Diurnal choices are frequently coded through your hating the Kin rather than ideological disagreement...).
On Taya -- she does say the line "You are to call me like they did on the outside: Mother Superior. That's 'cause I'm better than everyone.", which I think covers that the termitary Kin call her that because she asked them to (& specifically that the title came from Capella at the Polyhedron, outside of the Kin), which I should probably append to that post ^^
The thesis of the post I’m following up on was that Pathologic 2’s approach to children is “adults know best”, failing to produce any points about the self-determination and marginalization of children that were vital in p1, because it constantly overrules and opposes the young characters’ desires. The points of this post are (besides greater detail) that this theme is underpinned by A) the lack of a “future” in p2 preventing the children from having an ideology, and B) the game telling instead of showing. not comprehensive by any means but it’s a slightly better elaboration than said confusingly phrased post :-)
The List seem to know each other (outside the handful of individual connections like Capella-Khan and Notkin-Murky) primarily through knowing Isidor; conversely Isidor’s list is the only thing connecting them into a coherent faction, emphasized by the game displaying the “List” as a separate category under People. Isidor, an adult, takes the role of “identifying the children necessary to preserve the Town” from p1 Capella. The point that “these children must survive” is copied from p1, but it’s weakened by their survival not having an impact on any p2 ending – it becomes the “just because Isidor wanted it this way” reasoning which is also used to explain the Haruspex’s presence in the story, which starts to register weirdly with the kids given that p2 Isidor abuses Rubin and potentially abused Artemy (like most things with Isidor, why he did it this way is never seriously questioned). The existence of the List is something imposed on them by an adult instead of chosen.
Because their grouping is no longer based on a shared struggle to preserve the Town according to a single vision, the familial duty that motivated it in p1 is less of a factor in each child’s life. The position of “Mother Superior” not being real, Capella’s insistence on marrying Khan coming from herself rather than pressure from their families, Khan having run away from Victor – the kids are independent in the sense that they do things primarily for themselves, but the same disconnection from the broader context of the Town causes them not to have coherent goals. Therefore, the tension they face is limited to personal events: will Murky and Sticky move in with the Haruspex? will Grace stop the dead from being burned? will the Polyhedron support all kids for a few days?, preventing the List from expressing their relevance to the future of the Town as a whole (*except after the ending has already been decided!). This is in part imposed by p2’s intrinsic requirement that the game can continue with some or all of the List dead.
The only time their relevance comes up is Capella’s belief that she should lead the children, which she frames as her becoming a mother to them (that she should succeed “father” Isidor in this role instead of Artemy), and which is immediately negated in gameplay by the events of day 10 (further, her assertion that the List will all die as the player’s wards creates drive for the player to oppose her statement and actions by trying to disprove it). Due to this framing of motherhood, the other children’s loyalty to Capella becomes an emphasis on faith in the advice of a parent, rather than collective maturity. (In the same vein, Aspity’s character in p2 is explicitly as an advice-giving mother to Artemy, as well as to the Kin at large, who are described as infants and depicted as relying on her guidance to make choices.)
This form of “independence” means the List aren’t well beholden to the past, which means they aren’t concerned about their futures. The children will go along with any role they’re given by the player’s selected ending – the endings happen to them, not because of any part they played in the story. The central choice of Pathologic 2 as framed by Isidor is whether Artemy values the mutually exclusive past or future, so the choice to completely bypass this tension in his seven closest NPCs by making them not particularly care causes it, and them, to fall flat. This is in part imposed by the other fundamental issue, that p2’s Town doesn’t have a future for them to make choices about, forcing all character conflict to be resolved during the 12 days of the game.
(NB: Taya is an exception to the above several paragraphs – she takes 1 action that affects the landscape of the Town in the long run, although the actual choice to move the Kin to Shekhen is given to adult Artemy instead, and she’s motivated entirely by duty to her family. This is essentially in line with her being the Nocturnalest kid which is a separate post!)
Meanwhile, the older heirs Artemy, Maria, Vlad Jr., and Rubin are committed to becoming what their predecessors wanted, which when contrasted with the younger children associates their commitment with maturity. The few times Maria and Vlad Jr. do something conflicting with their parents (house-marking and going to the Kin respectively), the player is always given the opportunity to report it to said parents, who overrule and stop them. The implication that Simon asked Rubin to kill and dissect him makes Rubin’s actions completely dependent on the desires of Isidor and Simon until his medical duty runs out. Throughout the game, the decisions of older characters are prioritized in story and in gameplay effects, specifically decisions that control and direct the lives of the younger ones.
These decisions are roundly accepted by both the List and the heirs; any discontent is a side note in dialogue with no gameplay effect. Grace’s line “I don’t want to leave […], but Katerina [later referred to as Mother] says I can’t stay” applies doubly, as her arc involves being taken from her home and placed in the care of foster parents either once or twice depending on ending choice. The most obtrusive lack of challenge is that the player is unable to express dissatisfaction with Isidor’s choice to unleash the Plague beyond “killing thousands of innocents was cruel”, nor to talk about the implications of that act and Artemy’s position as its inheritor with either the Kin or Isidor’s List. Furthermore, the description of the Plague as a vaccination frames the Town as Isidor’s child, while he simultaneously justifies the misery inflicted on the Town with his love for it. Refusing the brutal choice that Isidor then imposes on the player results in a special ending where the game’s meta-narrator mocks and criticizes you for your “failure”.
In short, the lack of motivation and goals among the children of Pathologic 2 makes them passive to the choices adult characters make for them, which is every important choice. This could have been made a device about disempowerment if their resistance to it had an impact on gameplay at any point, but game design in fact opposes this. The player’s natural priority of “see as much dialogue as possible” leads the player towards dialogue and quest choices that align with the authority of parenthood; agreeing or leaving the children alone tends to end conversation undesirably, which the dialogue-end markers ensure the player is aware of. The endings incentivize endorsement of harsh parenting choices by skipping the finale if you oppose them. Neither the story nor gameplay contest the idea that an adult, in most cases a man, has the authority to make decisions controlling the lives of children.
#in the interest of not making my criticism tag Unreadable with 3 of these I'll either leave this in its notes or shuffle tags around later#good + thought-provoking discussion though! gets a little more into my thoughts on game's balance of and approach to the endings themselves#m0th-g0th0#long post

The Future of VR and AR Headsets: Samsung's Micro OLED Technology
youtube
Samsung Display CEO predicts significant market potential for micro OLED in VR and AR headsets
Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headsets have come a long way, but there is still room for improvement. One of the most anticipated advancements in this field is the adoption of micro OLED technology. While it is not widely used yet, VR enthusiasts believe that it offers superior performance with improved response times, deeper blacks, and higher resolution per eye. Samsung, a leader in display technology, is now stepping up to provide the expertise and final product in this area.
The Promise of Micro OLED in VR Headsets:
Micro OLED technology has been gaining popularity among VR enthusiasts due to its potential to enhance the VR experience. With just a small one-inch diagonal lens, micro OLED displays can deliver impressive visuals, making them the preferred choice for the next generation of VR headsets. The Bigscreen Beyond, a desktop headset, is a prime example of micro OLED implementation. Although it is expensive, it provides a glimpse into the future of VR once leading brands like Meta and Valve adopt this technology. However, the adoption of micro OLED currently poses a challenge as it would significantly increase the price of these headsets.
Samsung's Vision for the Future:
During a lecture at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Samsung Display CEO Choi Joo-Sun expressed his belief in the significant market potential of micro OLED technology. He stated that the market for micro OLED headsets will begin in earnest around 2027-2028, citing the technical aspects and cost considerations that need to be addressed before widespread adoption can occur.
Samsung's Entry into the VR and AR Market:
Given the success of products like the Valve Index and Meta Quest 3, coupled with the promising yet imperfect releases of AR headsets like the Apple Vision Pro, Samsung sees an opportunity in the VR and AR market. The company aims to develop its own VR and AR headsets to cater to the growing demand. While 2027 may seem far off, the world of VR moves at a slow pace, necessitating careful monitoring of the market and preparation for Samsung's entry. The affordability of micro OLED technology is a crucial factor that needs to be addressed before it can be widely adopted. However, enthusiast products like the Bigscreen Beyond and the rumored Meta Quest Pro iteration will serve as testing grounds for these advancements before they are refined and made more accessible. The future of VR and AR headsets lies in micro OLED technology, and Samsung is positioning itself to be a key player in this space. With its expertise in display technology and a keen understanding of the market, Samsung aims to capitalize on the growing demand for immersive experiences. While widespread adoption of micro OLED may still be a few years away, enthusiasts can look forward to the advancements showcased in products like the Bigscreen Beyond and the next generation of Meta Quest headsets. As the VR and AR market continues to evolve, Samsung's entry is sure to make a significant impact, bringing us closer to a new era of immersive technology.

#RibbonQuest2.0 - Part 3: Master Ball Rank or Bust
It’s kind of poetic, in a way. My very first meeting with Jin, and the beginning of our travels together, was commemorated with the chucking of a Master Ball - a guaranteed capture. It’s a one-of-a-kind ball typically reserved only for one-of-a-kind Pokemon (like Jin). When it comes to capturing Pokemon, the Master Ball stands above the rest as the symbol of infallibility, the promise of success overcoming any and all odds.
Well, we’re gonna need to channel that spirit in our latest challenge, because our success is anything but guaranteed: we have to take on the Master Ball rank in online rated battles for Pokemon Sword and Shield! Among our countless trials and triumphs spanning generations, Jin and I have never actually battled online against other real players. The World Ability Ribbon back in Platinum would’ve been our first foray, but the DS Wi-Fi connection had long been shut down in the time before our quest began.
Keeping with the theme of RibbonQuest2.0, this comes as an unexpected surprise. Jin, like all transfer Pokemon, is ineligible for rated battles; the standardized rules only permit Pokemon born and raised in the gen 8 games. Back when our time in Galar first started, I had never even planned on mentioning the Master Rank Ribbon, simply because we weren’t allowed to try and earn it!
But all of that changed with the release of the Isle of Armor DLC and patch version 1.2. By accepting the reset of your Pokemon’s move pool to only moves compliant with its gen 8 iteration, you’re allowed to mark your transfer Pokemon eligible for rated battles online! The icing on the cake is that Jin’s XD-exclusive purification move, Baton Pass (which I bent over backwards to keep even through all the Pokemon Contests), is now a TR which Farfetch’d can learn anytime. All’s well that ends well, I suppose.
It’s like getting your hand stamped at a concert, but with a side of forced amnesia.
With that, preparations were complete. There was nothing left to do but hop to it and get battling! The Master Ball Rank doesn’t earn itself, and if I’ve learned anything from our past, I think that means we’re going to need some help...
However, in the interest of cutting down on superfluous Ribbon Gang members like (sorry to single you out) Speedrun the Talonflame, I’ll only be honoring the final 5 actual contenders accompanying Jin when the ribbon is earned. Numerous grueling battles will be fought on the path to Master Ball tier and those stories will be lost to time, for only the best of the best deserve to call themselves part of Ribbon Gang 2.0.
I got boxfuls of second-stringers here, for real.
When first beginning in earnest with the July season, I mainly played Double battles, my preferred format for fun. I had a couple different teams, but never climbed any higher than Great Ball. Some teams of note included:
self-proc Weakness Policy Stamina Mudsdale with Skill Link support and Psych Up Stored Power follow up
Entrainment Plus Dedenne alongside special attackers with spread moves (coined the “fuck redirects” team)
a strange combo Sandstorm and Round team that was kind of an excuse to see if Refrigerate Aurorus could amount to anything
I was too committed to gimmicks, and at this time still hoped to reach the necessary heights using something built for fun at its core. I convinced myself that whenever I got around to really trying, it’d come together easily enough. In the past I’d do anything and everything to increase my chances of success, and I needed to return to this mentality moving forward.
After burn out from facing VGC competitive teams, several months of distraction with other games, and the arrival of 2021, I changed gears to test out Singles beginning in March. Despite having essentially zero experience with the format, I drafted two main teams during my Singles stint:
a Focus Energy Baton Pass team designed so every other Pokemon is then guaranteed crits with every attack
a Shedinja team with Pokemon like Ditto and Zoroark designed to help determine whether Shedinja can survive the opponents
Still sounds gimmicky, I know. I can’t help it. But a funny thing happened as I continued to chip away at this challenge: the Focus Pass crit team actually kind of... worked. Once you’re critting every attack, you start to notice just how many game mechanics critical hits outright invalidate. Intimidate? Your negative offensive stages are ignored. Bulk stacking opponents? Their positive defensive stages are ignored. Grimmsnarl and Lapras walling you out? Screens don’t apply against crits (although a Shell Armor Lapras did shut me down quite handily once). Honestly, the boosted damage almost feels like an afterthought.
Every team I played required considerable reworking as I’d progress, honing in on specific threats often encountered and dropping low-participation Pokemon who weren’t pulling their weight. There was even a rule set which allowed the use of extremely powerful Legendary Pokemon for a time (a very bad time). But all digression aside, allow me to introduce the team that would eventually carry me higher than ever, swiftly through Ultra Ball tier and directly into Master Ball. They are the new and final members of Ribbon Gang 2.0.
The ones on the left, I mean. This box is just more second-stringers.
First is Gepigop the Togekiss, sporting Super Luck as a core member of the original crit team. Spamming STAB Life Orb boosted Max Airstream is the Singles meta, after all. And he’s from my Y version, same as Speedrun!
Second is PkmnConquest the Kartana, probably the most consistent and useful member I picked up along the way. Give it a Scope Lens and it’ll BEAST BOOST its way to easy sweeps - just pray your opponent isn’t hiding any Fire types in the back...
It goes it goes it goes it goes it goes it goes it goes it goes Guillotine... the Weavile at number three. YUH. She was included as a direct response to the unending hordes of Cinderace and Zapdos I faced. Focus Sash and Counter helped her turn around so many unfavorable matchups, I can’t recommend it enough!
Bringing up fourth is 8008 8008 the Rhyperior. Need an idea of how broken Dynamax Zapdos’ bulk is? Rhyperior is the only Pokemon I found who can one shot it from full HP without needing to Dynamax in return... and even then, only using Rock Wrecker. Seriously.
In our final slot is AZKi the Espeon, because Hololive kept me company through many of my battle sessions, lol. After one too many Focus Passes were blocked by Taunt, I put an end to it with Magic Bounce. You remember that scene in The Incredibles where Syndrome’s robots were revised as they faced off against more and more heroes? She’s basically that.
By the time I was barely breaking into Ultra Ball tier, I found much greater success if I didn’t try to force the crit gimmick every time, but still had it if I wanted it on AZKi, the fourth in the succession of Focus Passers. Yes, after months spent honing my skills in battle, I finally learned that just bringing three Pokemon that can beat your opponent’s is the simplest way to a win. Incredible, I know. And win we did!
The final needed victory in Master Ball tier was secured by PkmnConquest, Guillotine, and 8008 8008, a trio I found myself locking in very frequently.
It’s... it’s beautiful.
With this Master Ball ribbon attached to my Master Ball Farfetch’d, we’ve finally brought our lengthy Galarian story to its conclusion. Having managed to snag this online-exclusive ribbon before these games lost popularity or network support, Jin is once again a tried and true Ribbon Master, and I’ve no unfinished business to worry about any longer.
Until it is time to take up your sword once more,
Rest easy, Jin.

Books I read in February
The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson - This is a nonfiction historical book telling the history of the Great Migration of black Americans from the South to the North. The book specifically follows the lives 3 real black Americans that moved up north during different time periods and the author connects their stories to the historical whole. As someone who is vaguely interested in studying history I was just in awe of this book as a piece of historiography, like the amount of interviews she did in general, the amount of time she had to spend with each of the three subjects and the creative work she did with compiling that into narratives, combined with all the research present in the essay-like breaks...Like I get tired thinking about it. As a reader both the history and the narrative parts are very compelling and play well off each other, like even though the subjects are real they’re so interesting if they weren’t the story would still be good, which ig is why she chose those three people out of the hundreds she interviewed. Warning, it is very graphic especially at the beginning describing the brutality black people faced at that time.
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende - So after a heavy historical text I wanted to read something a bit lighter so a children’s classic it is! I never actually watched the movie so I was judging it as is and I enjoyed it overall. It’s a typical child goes to a magical world story with a fun meta element. The first half was lovely, the second half dragged a bit but I think that was somewhat intentional as the quests began to lose meaning as Bastian lost who he was. Reading the book made me a little disappointed that the actor cast as Bastian wasn’t fat, as I feel like it’s rare to have sympathetic fat characters, especially main characters in children’s media and I feel like it played a significant role in his characterization in the book. So yeah I’d say it’s not my favorite book of it’s kind, it’s worth the read.
Race Against Time by Jerry Mitchell - Again a very graphic book regarding racial issues. Race Against Time is a nonfiction true crime book about Mississippi reporter Jerry Mitchell’s journey of getting old civil rights era murders reopened and the murderers tried. It delves into the ways that the KKK was and still is tied to the police in these small southern towns. It’s a depressing but very rewarding read.
How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen by Joanna Faber & Julie King - Yes this is a parenting book I leached off my mom’s audible account what of it? But yeah this book is amazing and anyone looking to have/work with little kids should read it. Honestly I feel like a lot of these tips work for talking with some ppl online as well..
Obsession: Reflections on the Tyranny of Slenderness by Kim Chernin - This is a 1980s feminist work wherein the author discusses eating disorders and why it seems that women are haunted by a constant underlying obsession with their weight. I got the 2nd or 3rd edition of this book but apparently the first edition of the book spent a lot of time arguing that eating disorders were real because people thought it was just women being crazy...which is just wild to think about. But yeah while it was extremely influential it is very much a product of 2nd wave feminism in terms of assuming a universal female experience and a lot of focus on the female body. Which makes sense given that cis women were/are the vast majority of eating disorder sufferers but I could very easily see how people could get dysphoric from the biological essentialism, especially in some of the chapters get into some of that moon mother womb woo woo that I’m not a fan of. But I think that if you’re a cis woman or just willing to deal with that stuff and read critically it’s a valuable read that challenged some of my internal thought processes.
Playing in the Dark by Toni Morrison - Honestly I’m not sure if this counts as a book or a long essay, the audiobook was only 3 hours. Basically it’s Toni Morrison arguing for an Africanist lens of American literary studies in the same way as feminist or marxist analysis. She argues that African American scholars who want to analyze things from the perspective of race are pushed to their own African American Studies corners rather than accepted the broader field of literature, and she rightly believes that it is impossible to look at American Literature without the lens of race. So yeah this book is good but it didn’t blow me away or anything because it’s preaching to the choir but perhaps if I was a true intellectual who had actually read the books she was referencing I’d enjoy it more.
#books#m.text#this took forever to put out but midterms yk..the next list is gonna be like 2 books lol

First Guy Wins - A Queliot Meta
I was rewatching The Magicians and was struck by a realization. Eliot and Queliot fit the “First Girl Wins” romantic trope. Yes, in this case, Eliot is a guy, not a girl but the trope still works.
Credit where credit is due, this is based by @scullylikesscience ‘s “First Girl Wins” meta.
When I first realized that Queliot definitely seemed to be the road the writers were going I was a bit cynical. I have quite a lot of experience and have been betrayed by many a showrunner.
I thought the writers had just seen that Queliot was more popular and course-corrected. Then I started my rewatch and realized that as much as the showrunners love claiming they’re winging it, this might have been planned after all.
It could still be a happy coincidence so I’m not going to give them too much credit. For the likes of this meta let’s focus on the facts and the characters.
We’re going to analyze Quentin and Eliot’s relationship through the lens of “First Girl Wins”
In romantic works, the first girl person introduced — either overall or as a potential Love Interest — has a very good chance of ending up with the protagonist (especially if the protagonist is male).
There are all sorts of explanations as to why this is. Things ending up the same place they started is a very old narrative technique.
From a Doylist point of view, the Law of Conservation of Detail suggests introducing the Love Interest early. An early introduction allows you to get the audience interested in her and rooting for her, gives you space for Character Development, and give her relationship with her (eventual) partner the most time to develop organically.
Eliot gets introduced pretty early, has a lot of character development outside of his relationship with Quentin and Queliot definitely has developed organically.
Is it the first girl the protagonist meets according to In-Universe chronology, even if we first see her halfway through the show's run? The first one to show romantic feelings? The first new girl the protagonist meets?
Eliot isn’t the first possible love interest that gets introduced, that’s actually Julia, then it’s Eliot, followed by Alice in the last place. It is in their introductions though that tells us that it’s actually Eliot that gets the title of First Girl™.
If you're suspecting some girl is supposed to be the First Girl™, a good idea would be to take a look at how the writer has played her up.
Is he a major character?
Eliot Waugh is one of the show’s leading characters ✔
Is the "first" interaction led up to, emphasized, treated as a big deal?
We first see him in the background as Quentin walks towards Brakebills. The camera shot is an Extreme Long Shot.
The camera focuses on him smoking for a bit (Wide Shot) until we see Quentin actually approach.
The camera closes on him with a medium shot as he talks to Quentin, then it’s a Medium Close Up as he gets down and introduces himself.
We see Quentin lose his cool and then he follows after Eliot. Asking if he’s hallucinating. Eliot and Quentin are in the same frame until they get to the exam which is where Eliot’s introduction ends.
This connects Eliot to Brakebills/Magic. So yes it’s definitely a big deal ✔
All other things being equal, is he a strong contender for being the protagonist's Love Interest?
Quentin and Eliot spend a lot of the first episodes together. The first person Quentin truly opens up to is Eliot (and Eliot opens up in return.) Eliot tells him one of his darkest secrets, while Quentin tells him about the hospital. The person he talks to about his worries re: getting expelled is Eliot.
1x02
In 1x03 Eliot goes to Quentin for help in finding the missing book. Thanks to this Quentin is introduced to the Hedge Witches, not only that but to the fact that Julia is one of them. Which means Eliot is there for Quentin and Julia’s big argument. This means Eliot has seen both sides of Q’s life (before Brakebills and after).
In 1x04 when Quentin gets stuck in Marina and Julia’s spell, Eliot is not only in the spell but visibly worried about Q outside of the spell.
Not only that but we actually see Eliot getting defensive with Julia.
When Quentin breaks out of it, the first person we see go to him is Eliot. Throughout the next couple of episodes, it seems there’s always a scene with the two of them together. The only time they don’t share screentime is in 1x07 (bc Q is with Mayakovsky and we’ll get to that later).
In 1x11 they literally have sex. Yes they’re high on emotions and it’s a threesome with Margo but it happened. If you hadn’t guessed by this point that Eliot is a valid romantic choice this made it more clear.
There’s no Straight Guy™ Freakout. Quentin was never written as a straight character. From his first interaction with Eliot, we see that Quentin is attracted to him. The only negative connotation the scene has it that it’s cheating because Quentin was in a relationship at the time.
Throughout Season 1 a lot of the major moments for Quentin himself happen with Eliot or around Eliot. Quentin might get expelled? Eliot is there. Confrontation with Julia? Eliot is there. His dad has cancer? Eliot and Margo help him out. Quentin gets separated from the group? Eliot sends a paper airplane to tell them where they are. This season establishes that Eliot is an important person in Quentin’s life.
In 2x01 we get the crowning scene between Eliot and Quentin and not only does it have very romantic vibes but the camera shots tell us a lot about these two characters. We get a Full Shot of the whole group before it becomes a lot more intimate.
The speech that Quentin gives Eliot is the longest of all the Coronation speeches. From Eliot’s side, we get Close-Ups. Close Ups show us what the character is feeling at this moment. We see an Eliot with tears in his eyes looking up at Quentin with so much love.
On his side, Quentin has a Medium Close Up all we see in his eyes is pride. Despite the fact that they haven’t had the best relationship recently Quentin still deeply cares.
Both of them look at each other. The camera focuses on both of them until the moment is over and the camera turns to Penny and the scene continues.
So is he a strong contender for being the protagonist's Love Interest? Considering this is only a smidge of their interactions? I would say definitely ✔.
(I could talk about all their interactions, especially “A Life in a Day” but then we’d be here all year and I wanted to focus on their earlier establishing scenes)
The First Girl will rarely be the first one to confess her feelings, admit them,
Pretty much all the romantic interactions between them have been initiated by Quentin rather than Eliot.
Back in 3x05, we see that Quentin is the one that first kisses Eliot. They live their life together and raise a family.
In 4x05 it’s revealed that after they got their memories back Quentin put himself out there. We see a Quentin who is sure that he loves Eliot “who gets that kind of proof of concept”. It doesn’t go well for him but he did it.
In fact, he's much likelier to be the one who does it last
We don’t get the full realization of Eliot’s feelings until 4x05. I think Eliot has known for a while that he loves Quentin, but it's just been implied (few people can heart eye as Hale can). But the reason I mention it is that this is where Eliot realizes he has to do something about it. The ball is in his court.
With his small window of opportunity, he tries to convey his feelings to Quentin while also giving him a reason to fight “Peaches and plums motherfucker, I’m alive in here”.
Complications will abound, Romantic False Leads will show up,
Most of Season 1’s romantic subplot is Quentin/Alice and later Eliot/Mike. The interesting thing is that both of the Romantic False Leads appear in the same episode (1x07). Alice has been there from the first episode but 1x07 is the episode where she and Quentin hook up. Coincidentally the same when Eliot and Mike hook up.
Quentin falls in love with Alice while Eliot is very deeply into Mike. Of course, both relationships end in tragedy. Eliot has to kill Mike to protect the rest and Alice dies defeating the beast. The pain of his actions makes Eliot turn towards substance abuse which leads to him going to Fillory with the rest. It sets him on a path that deviates from Quentin’s.
Quentin’s plot is about bringing Alice back from being a Niffin. Yet when he does she hates him for it. So their relationship fizzles out and never truly recovers.
In Eliot’s case, we also get Idri as a false romantic lead as they did technically get engaged and were clearly attracted to each other.
misunderstandings will arise between them, pride and denial will keep them apart.
The biggest misunderstanding between the two comes from the same scene in 4x05. Eliot believes that Quentin wouldn’t choose him if they had a choice. He gets scared and so he pushes Quentin away. Eliot mistakenly believes Q is straight so that’s probably the biggest misunderstanding between them. Quentin interprets it as Eliot not choosing him if he had a choice.
The misunderstanding gets worse when we remember 3x06 had Eliot rejecting Quentin’s idea of going on a quest. He has a perfectly valid reason but Quentin probably sees it as another rejection from the man he is in love with.
They’re both in love with each other but neither believes the other would choose him. Miscommunication is a large part of romantic tropes.
A more subtle tactic is to get the First Girl "off the radar" somehow —
Ironically enough Queliot fits this criterion as well. Eliot is married to Fen (and later engaged to Idri) while stuck in Fillory being High King the majority of seasons 2 and 3. While Quentin is dealing with Niffin!Alice and helping Julia in Season 2, and largely involved in the Key Quest in Season 3.
That doesn’t mean they don’t see each other because they do. They just can go periods of time without sharing meaningful screentime (especially in regards to show-time as time in the show passes differently than how we see it episode by episode).
You can expect an in-universe justification for how these two people met so early and took so long to figure out they belong together.
In Queliot’s case, it’s misunderstandings, romantic false leads, magical quests, their own stupidity, false identities and of course the fact that one of them is possessed by a monster.
The fact of the matter is that Eliot fits pretty much all the criteria for being the First Girl (or in this case First Guy). So whether it was on purpose or just a happy accident it still counts.
Eliot Waugh is the First Guy™ which leads me to believe great things are on the way for Queliot. We just have to sit back and enjoy the ride.
(Remember to pack tissues, as I have a feeling the writers aren’t done torturing us yet)
