My Top 10 Iconic Le Mans Legends
This weekend, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race will celebrate its 100th anniversary, and with 62 cars from different classes gathering around in this centennial milestone as well as special guest stars, rest assured that the 100th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is going to be historical indeed.
As the whole world is bracing for the centennial running of the legendary endurance race that pushes carmakers over the limit in the name of speed and survival, it's time for me to jot down my top ten iconic Le Mans legends.
10) GR010 - Following the success of their LMP1-class TS050, which propelled Toyota Gazoo Racing to three straight overall titles at Le Mans, Toyota created this competitor to the new Hypercar class, which replaced the LMP1 class after the 2020 season. Complying with Hypercar regulations, the GR010 is powered by a 3.5L V6 twin-turbo engine mated to an electric motor that powers the front wheels, making it a 4WD machine where the petrol engine powers the rear wheels while the electric motor takes care of the front, a drastic change compared to its LMP1 predecessor. Toyota defended its Le Mans success in the new Hypercar class with the #7 Toyota Gazoo Racing car emerging as the winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans for two years, making it its fifth win in a row.
9) Toyota TS050 - In the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans, being the only manufacturer-backed LMP1 racer competing in its class, the #8 Toyota Gazoo Racing TS050, piloted by Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso, Formula E driver Sebastien Buemi, and Kazuki Nakajima, made a historic victory at Le Mans, marking the second time a Japanese carmaker won Le Mans since the legendary Mazda 787B and the first time a Japanese driver became part of the Le Mans-winning team. In 2019 and 2020, with the latter being the final year for the LMP1 era, Toyota emerged victorious in Le Mans.
8) Jaguar XJR-9 - Built in collaboration between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing, Jaguar's Group C competitor is powered by two V12 engines; a 7.0L for the WSPC and a 6.0L for IMSA GTP class. Both produce 760PS of power and 828Nm of torque, while mated to a 5-speed March/TWR manual gearbox, making the XJR-9 capable of hitting a 245mph top speed. A Silk Cut-sponsored Jaguar XJR-9 won the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans with Jan Lammers, Johnny Dumfries, and Andy Wallace behind the wheel.
7) Peugeot 905 - The V10-powered Peugeot 905 cemented the French carmaker to the list of Le Mans winners when it won the legendary endurance race twice in 1992 and 1993.
6) Audi R18 TDi - The Audi R18 TDi is known as the only diesel-powered racing machine that conquered Le Mans three times from 2012 to 2014. Not only that, it has dominated two WEC championship titles from 2012 to 2013. Such achievement proves that diesel is king until dieselgate came and most carmakers are ditching diesel-powered engines for good.
5) 919 Hybrid - In 2014, Porsche returned to LMP1 endurance racing with their 919 Hybrid and although it didn't fare well in its first run, which led to its 3rd place finish at the constructor's championship at the 2014 WEC season, it came back with a much fighting chance and because of such will power, it managed to win not just Le Mans but also three WEC seasons on the trot from 2015 to 2017. Porsche has left the LMP1 racing program after their three-win streak with the 919, only to make a comeback in the Hypercar class with the 963 racing machine.
4) Sauber-Mercedes C9 - As part of the Sauber-Mercedes partnership, this Group C prototype was introduced in 1987 and its first success can be traced back to the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the #63 C9 driven by Jochen Mass, Manual Reuter, and Stanley Dickens, achieved a win. During qualifying for Le Mans, the C9, with its Mercedes-Benz M119 HL 90º 5.0L Turbo V8 engine with two KKK turbos, achieved a top speed of 248.0 mph (400 km/h) at the Mulsanne Straight of Le Mans.
3) 917K - The Porsche 917K is known as the short-tail version of the legendary 917, a sports prototype race car, and it gave Porsche their first overall wins at Le Mans for two straight years since 1970. Thanks to such success, it even gained a starring role in the Le Mans movie starring Steve McQueen.
2) 787B - Built as an improved version of the 787, it features the same R26B 4-rotor Wankel engine as its predecessor which produces up to 690HP of power. Aside from that, it features carbon-fiber bodywork which resulted in a light, rigid body structure and other improvements. In the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, Mazda sent two 787B machines with the race-winning #55 car driven by Bertrand Gachot, Johnny Herbert, and Volker Weider. The 787B not only became the first Japanese-manufactured race car to win Le Mans, but it's also the first-and-only rotary-powered race car to win the said endurance race.
1) GT40 Mk. II - Ford's trial-and-error process of creating a racing machine that can crush Ferrari in Le Mans is nothing more of an act of revenge from the Blue Oval following Ferrari's rejection to become part of the Ford empire. Armed with the 7.0L V8 engine producing 485HP of power and mated to a 4-speed gearbox, the GT40 Mk.II from Ford delivered a stunning podium sweep at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race, more than enough to crush Ferrari into it. Such achievement has been profiled in the biopic movie Ford vs. Ferrari.
In this centennial running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will it be a milestone for Toyota Gazoo as it's seeking a three-peat in the Hypercar class? Will the return of Ferrari in Le Mans crush Toyota's dreams for a three-peat? Find out as this legendary endurance race unfolds this Saturday, June 10th. Don't miss it!

Comanchero gang raids: Jarome Fonua pleads guilty to money laundering, participating in an organised criminal group
A senior Comancheros gang member has admitted charges of money laundering and participating in an organised criminal group - changing his plea just a few weeks ahead of his trial. Jarome Fonua entered guilty pleas to the offences this morning at a High Court hearing, held by audio-visual link because of the Covid-19 lockdown in Auckland.
Once nothing more than a mystery caller on the end of the phone line, the man who smuggled methamphetamine from Mexico into New Zealand for the Comancheros gang will now serve a long prison
Vetekina Naufahu joins two other senior members of the Comanchero motorcycle gang in admitting charges of money laundering and participating in an organised criminal group following the covert police investigation Operation Nova. A senior Comanchero gang member has admitted charges of money laundering and participating in an organised criminal group, just weeks before his trial was due to start.
Vetekina Naufahu pleaded guilty to three charges at a High Court hearing this morning, held by audio-visual link because of the Covid-19 lockdown in Auckland.
The money laundering charge relates to his late-model Range Rover, worth around $150,000, while the organised crime charge carries the most significant penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
Naufahu - whose brother Pasilika is the president of the New Zealand chapter of the Australian motorcycle gang - also pleaded guilty to possession of MDMA, or Ecstasy, which is a Class-B controlled drug.
Justice Sally Fitzgerald convicted Naufahu of the three offences and scheduled a sentencing date of October 23, 2020, alongside his fellow Comanchero Jarome Fonua.
Last week, the gang's treasurer Fonua also pleaded guilty to money laundering and participating in an organised criminal group. The late admissions come shortly before the pair were due to stand trial at the High Court in September, along with other members of the gang and their associates on charges laid in April 2019 following Operation Nova.
Vetekina and Fonua now join Tyson Daniels, the gang's vice-president, and Auckland lawyer Andrew Simpson in being convicted of laundering criminal profits.
Nearly $1.3 million in cash was deposited into the lawyer's trust account, which was then used to purchase expensive cars and property.
For Daniels alone, there were four Range Rovers - with price tags of $175,000, $255,000, $218,000 and $280,000 - a $200,000 Mercedes-Benz, a Lamborghini for $285,000, and two Rolls-Royces, which cost $364,000 and $595,000.
A charge of participating in an organised criminal group between May 2017 and April 2019 was also admitted by Daniels, who was living in the affluent Auckland suburb of Mellons Bay until his arrest in April last year. In sentencing Daniels - who was wearing a Versace top in Comanchero colours of black and gold - to four years and eight months in prison, Justice Gerard van Bohemen said the senior gang member played a crucial role overseeing the gang's operations for significant personal gain.
The offending was sophisticated, said Justice van Bohemen, with encrypted devices used to avoid detection by police.
Money was deposited at banks in amounts less than $10,000, in a bid to avoid triggering the banks' reporting threshold, then funnelled through trust and company accounts to disguise their criminal origins.
"You clearly knew the money was derived from significant importation of drugs."
More than $1.2m in cash was deposited into Simpson's trust account at his law practice, which was also used to purchase some of the cars belonging to Daniels and allegedly others in the gang, as well as real estate such as a $1.3m home in Auckland.
Justice van Bohemen said Simpson was the facilitator of the money-laundering scheme, who used his specialist skills and knowledge as a lawyer.
"You made it work. You set up the trusts and lent respectability, as a lawyer, to a criminal organisation."
Simpson was reckless and brought the legal profession into disrepute, however, the judge was satisfied he was genuine in his remorse.
Despite this, Simpson was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.
"I deeply regret a father being separated from his family. However, that is a consequence of your decisions."
Neither man was charged with drug offences.
But the police allege the Comanchero, an Australian gang which set up shop in New Zealand after a number of senior members were deported here, are behind significant drug smuggling linked to a Mexican cartel. In July, a 60-year-old man who travelled to Mexico was sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to four charges of importing a Class A drug after being identified in Operation Nova.
Tallat Rahman, from Suva, was arrested in February 2019 in the first phase of the inquiry, which discovered how parcels of methamphetamine weighing up to 5kg were hidden inside kitchen appliances shipped from the United States.
Once in New Zealand, the police allege the drugs were distributed by "frontmen" for the Comanchero, whose hierarchy allegedly reaped the rewards of the illicit trade.
Rahman was unknown to the team of detectives running Operation Nova until he was overheard talking to one of the "frontmen", who cannot be named for legal reasons, whose phone conversations were bugged by police.
He said: "You're going to start off with a nice number with two zeroes. I'm going to land it between you and me … [I'll give you] all the f***en work you can handle. We're going to land it there [in New Zealand]." The cheap wholesale price of $120,000 per kilogram was agreed to by both parties, in a deal the police believed would weigh at least 100kg ("a nice number with two zeros").
The call was made in Mexico and the caller was identified as Rahman; a Fijian-Indian who lived in Suva, who had dual Canadian citizenship and travelled regularly to Mexico and the United States.
Everything went quiet until Rahman flew into Auckland International Airport on December 18, 2018, and checked into a hotel on Queen St, the Four Points by Sheraton.
Three days later, Rahman's son checked into the same hotel and was seen meeting with another man, a 19-year-old Mexican national, who also cannot be identified for legal reasons.
Two days before Christmas, December 23, 2018, Rahman left New Zealand but not before receiving a backpack full of cash.
Around the same time, a consignment of a kitchen stovetops shipped from the United States had been seized by Customs and examined. There was nearly 5kg of methamphetamine inside.
Then in February 2019, two separate consignments from the United States - a "waffle maker" and "coffee brewer"- were stopped at the border by Customs, each containing 2.9kg of methamphetamine.
Rahman returned to New Zealand and was arrested by the National Organised Crime Group, along with the 19-year-old from Mexico and a 33-year-old Chinese man called Hui Wang. He was called the "Wire Guy" because he laundered hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash in wire transfers overseas. Search warrants were also executed at the home linked to Rahman in Suva where Fijian Police discovered 39kg of cocaine, presumably destined for the Australian and New Zealand markets. The haul was worth about $20m.
When brought in for questioning by police, Rahman claimed to be in New Zealand on holiday.
When detectives told him that an audio device had been covertly installed in his hotel room on Queen St, Rahman said: "Oh shit".

MERCEDES-BENZ C-CLASS 2019
Declassified official photos of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class 2019. Sedan and Mercedes wagon have been scheduled update and will be presented at the Geneva Motor Show.
The new Mercedes C-Class 2019 can be distinguished, first of all, by a new radiator grille and LED headlights that have become part of the basic equipment. In addition, changed bumpers and installed fresh lights.
For a long time Mercedes did not change the design of its cars. Relatively recently, the company invested a lot of resources and efforts in developing new exterior and interior designs. In addition, the German automaker invested quite a lot of money in the development of modern technologies. An example is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The car has exceptional performance and attractive design, as will be discussed in more detail.
EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR DESIGN
EXTERIOR
Externally, the new car remained virtually unchanged. The key features include:
Radiator grating has a complex design, which is represented by a combination of a massive icon and a large number of elements resembling crystals. The style of the car is sporty, the front bumper has a complex design. An example is the air intakes with ribs. It should be taken into account that there are no fog lamps, as the automaker significantly complicated the design of the head optics. The main light source is represented by a complex design, which is represented by a diode band and lenses. On the sides are ribs, which make the body look more aggressive and sporty. The rear of the sedan is also very attractive. Features include small headlights, as well as a bumper, which built in the exhaust pipes.
Front Left view of Mercedes Benz C-Class of 2019 year
When you create a sedan resorted to a sporting style, the choice is more than a number of different wheel disks.
INTERIOR
German automaker began to apply a unified style when creating showrooms of its vehicles. It is worth considering that the interior looks very attractive:
At manufacturing high-quality materials are applied: soft plastic, a skin, aluminum furnish, glossy panels. When creating a salon, the style of minimalism is applied.
Dashboard view of Mercedes Benz C-Class of 2019 year
The salon is represented by a combination of the most modern technologies. Quite an important moment we will call the central console, which smoothly passes into the tunnel. To control the numerous functions of the car installed touch multi-function joystick. As a backlight, a system is used that can change the color. At the same time the automaker was able to achieve the effect of hovering many panels. The installed display has touch control. Of course, you can use the joystick, as well as control units with the steering wheel. The company has invested quite a lot of money in developing its own operating system. At the same time, a modern design was used, due to which the information is read well, and all elements look very attractive
Seats are represented by complex designs that have simply a huge number of options: heating, ventilation, electronic control unit, massage, memory and others. In addition, the design is represented by lateral supports and a lumbar support.
The salon looks very attractive. This is due not only to the use of various quality materials, but also to the correct combination of various elements.
In the interior there is a new steering wheel with touch buttons, and for a surcharge offered a 12.3-inch virtual instrument panel and an enlarged 10.25-inch multimedia display.
The front seats can now be supplemented with a massage function. A list of options has also been added to the perfume dispenser in the cabin and a semi-autonomous driving system.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Mercedes not only invested quite a lot of money and effort into the development of modern style, but also improved technical characteristics. The following points are related to the features:
When looking for a car with a rear-wheel drive, you should pay attention to the C-Class. In addition, a four-wheel drive version is available, which became available relatively recently. Quite an interesting proposal can be called the installation of 6-MKPP. On such cars, a manual box is installed extremely rarely, but still the German automaker provided such an opportunity. The most popular version is the 9-automatic transmission – a modern design that successfully distributes the torque from the engine. You should consider the possibility of choosing among several motors. In addition, a hybrid power plant is available, which has high power and low fuel consumption.
About cardinal changes in comparison with the previous generation can not be said. When creating the car, everything was also used for the platform and the previously developed nodes.
Engine view of Mercedes Benz C-Class of 2019 year
The line of engines will also undergo changes, but for the time being they are kept secret. It is known only that in the C300 version the power of the 2.0-liter petrol turbo engine will be raised from 245 to 258 liters. from. Also, the Mercedes C300e hybrid will receive a new battery with an increased capacity of up to 13.8 kWh.
COMPONENTS AND PRICES
The updated car will be on sale in the middle of 2018. Mercedes C Class 2019 in the new body will not receive significant changes in comparison with the previous generation, the car will be supplied at a price of 32,000 euros.
The car in question will be equipped with the latest technology. The main options are as follows:
The steering wheel is quite massive in size, there are special protrusions on the hoop. In this case, the spokes are placed just a huge number of different control units, for example, a massive touchpad. Due to this, there is almost no need to use additional control units on the center console.
Front view of Mercedes Benz C-Class of 2019 year
A display of a multimedia system with a size of 12.3-inches is installed. It can be used to display navigation and various information. Unlike many other models, the monitor has a display that rises above the panel. The instrument panel is made in a rather attractive style. To display information, a high-resolution display is also installed, which is designed in the form of two combined wells. The automaker made it possible to display a variety of information on the display, for example, maps of the navigation system. The instrument panel has a fairly large number of different settings. In the salon there is a voice control function. It is based on the recognition of a variety of teams. Due to this, you can choose a variety of options without taking your hands off the rim of the rudder. In addition, you can synchronize the on-board computer with a mobile device, significantly expanding the degree of functionality. The parking assistant is installed. With a fairly large body size to put the car in a parking lot is difficult. Depending on the chosen equipment, the seats can have a variety of functions that provide maximum comfort. Mercedes C Class 2019 (complete sets and prices see here) can be purchased with quite a large number of different options. The most complete version can be represented by a variety of options. An example is the installation of a modernized front camera, which is capable of recording and analyzing the most important information.
Long-range radar is used to read various information that is required to work with various assistants. For example, the radar can correct the position of the car on the lane, recognize the signs, as well as various obstacles. For example, Mercedes can reduce the speed in automatic mode when a pedestrian is detected in front of the vehicle. The German automaker for a long period invests a large amount of money in the development of semi-automatic autopilot. It can operate at speeds up to 210 km / h. Upgraded the navigation system. It can display various information, for example, the location of traffic jams or important points (cafes, gas stations, etc.).
Today, Mercedes cars largely bypass their competitors. This is due to the fact that it has just a huge number of its own systems that can improve traffic safety and comfort.
MAIN COMPETITORS
Despite the fact that Korean and Japanese automakers significantly improve the quality of their cars, not many can compare with Mercedes. This is due to the fact that the company for a long time invested in the development of modern technology, but it did not introduce them into use. The new model Mercedes C Class 2019 can be considered with the following cars:
Audi A4. BMW 3-Series. Infiniti Q50. Lexus IS. Volvo S60. Jaguar XE.
The serious competitors are the offers of the company Audi and BMW. In addition, the company Lexus invests a lot of money in the development of a unique exterior and interior, modern technology. As for the cost, almost all of them have the same price.
CONCLUSION
In our review of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class 2018-2019 model year – photos and videos, the price and specifications, the technical characteristics of the most popular to date Mercedes in the world. Having survived the restyled Mercedes-Benz S-Class, it acquired a renewed appearance, a modernized interior with more modern equipment, improved safety systems and a new 9-speed gearbox. The updated Mercedes-Benz C-Class will go on sale in the summer of 2018 at a price of 32,000 euros, which is not much more than the cost of the pre-reform model.

Auto mobiles And Motor-Sports; The Formula One :
The Introduction of Cars:
Do you like cars? Cars are the four wheeled auto mobiles which enable us the facility of travelling from one place to another in a faster manner than the old days. As you all know during old days, people took a lot more time to travel from one place to another. You know why it happened. It is because of the lack of developed technology for an easier, much faster and efficient transportation of people and goods. As human beings improved their views and shaped up their technological innovations, they discovered the wheels which is as you all know in the shape of a circle. Gradually they invented Cars, the four wheeled vehicles. Cars came into the global use during the 20th century. More specifically, Cars came into use during the year 1886 when Carl Benz introduced the first four wheeled vehicle. The car which was introduced by Carl Benz was the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. Cars became widely available in the early 20th century. But most of the cars during that time were not accessible for the public due to their ingenuity and unawareness. The first cars accessible to the masses was the 1908 Model T, an American car manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Cars were rapidly adopted in the US, where they replaced animal-drawn carriages and carts, but took much longer to be accepted in Western Europe and other parts of the world. Gradually cars became common on the streets. And this demand for cars gave the auto mobile manufacturers new challenge to bring some kind of new elements into their cars. As you all know, now a days cars have many facilities like AC, Multimedia system, parking sensors and so on.. Cars even have autonomous systems using artificial intelligence in which the car drives by itself using AI.
The Introduction Of Motor Sports:
As the usual sports events motor sports is the sports event using motor vehicles that is cars and bikes. In the event of car racing the competitors race from one starting point to a finishing point. The winner of the game is the ones with the lowest time taken to finish the race. In the case of four wheeled motor sports, the item is globally governed by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The history of motor sport is from 1894 when a French newspaper organised a race from Paris to Rouen and back, starting city to city racing. In 1900, the Gordon Bennett Cup was established. But gradually the closed circuit racing transformed to greater times and racing in public roads were banned.
Aspendale Racecourse in Australia in 1906 was the first dedicated motor racing track in the world. Thereafter more and more racing events became popular and different types of racing Grand Prix and championships came into being.
Different Types Of Racing sports:
Racing sports are of many types. And each types of racing are just as better as each other and are celebrated grandly by the racing manias (including me). Each racing events pumps dopamine and adrenaline to the nerves of racing hearted people, as their super heroes showcase their talent on the racing track. These racing events are thoroughly enjoyed by both the competitors and audience.
Different types of Racing Events are:
The Formula Racing:
The Formula One
The Formula E
Indy Car Series
The Dakar Rally
There are many other racing series like stock car, sports car, touring car and off road or Rally racing. Now Here we discuss about the formula one.
The Formula One or F1
As you all Know the first and the most popular racing sport is the Formula One (also known as Formula 1 or F1) is the highest class of international auto racing for single-seater racing cars sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The series is owned by Liberty Media, an American mass media company controlled by its founder and chairman John C. Malone, through its wholly owned subsidiary, the Formula One Group. The World Drivers' Championship, which became the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1981, has been one of the premier forms of racing around the world since its inaugural season in 1950.The word "formula" in the name refers to the set of rules to which all participants' cars must conform in order to participate in the game. A Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix. The word Grand Prix is the native of France which means ‘great or grand prices’.These GP races take place on the closed F1 circuits all over the world. The cars used in the race are the fastest regulated road-course racing cars in the world, owing to very high cornering speeds achieved through the generation of large amounts of aerodynamic downforce. But in the year 2017 the cars underwent major changes,
allowing wider front and rear wings, and wider tyres resulting in peak cornering forces and top speeds of up to approximately 350km/h (215mph). As of 2019 the hybrid engines are limited in performance to a maximum of 15,000 rpm; the cars are very dependent on electronics and aerodynamics, suspension and tyres. Traction control and other driving aids have been banned since 2008. You should never think that arranging and managing this mega grand event is cheap, With the annual cost of running a mid-tier team—designing, building, and maintaining cars, pay, transport—being US$120 million, its financial and political battles are widely reported. Its high profile and popularity have created a major merchandising environment, which has resulted in large investments from sponsors. On 23 January 2017 Liberty Media confirmed the completion of the acquisition of Delta Topco, the company that controls Formula One, from private-equity firm CVC Capital Partners for $8 billion, and the coordinators and other workers including everyone who contribute their part including the audience who gets to the gallery to support their star plays an important part in the success of the game.
Point system in F1
Coming to the point system in the race F1 there are separate points for the constructors (the companies who make cars for their own drivers) and the drivers of companies in which they race for. The rules for getting specific points is that A driver must finish within the top ten to receive a point for setting the fastest lap of the race. In the event that the driver who set the fastest lap finishes outside of the top ten then the point for fastest lap will not be awarded for that race.
The point table is given below:
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th FL*
25 18 15 12 10 8 6 4 2 1 1
(*FL means Fastest Lap)
The current table top of this season 2020 is Lewis Hamilton with 205 points and he is racing for Mercedes Benz, the German automotive company.
The Drivers point table* is given below:
The constructors point table* is given here:
(*the values of the points may change by the next race)
And here I conclude my article and hope You enjoyed the ride to it.

Car & Driver 2019 10Best "Inadequacies:" Quick blurbs on the cars that didn't make the 10Best list this year via /r/cars
Car & Driver 2019 10Best "Inadequacies:" Quick blurbs on the cars that didn't make the 10Best list this year
In the print edition of Car & Driver, January, 2019, they dove into the year's 10Best cars list. They also had a small section in the margins of the 10Best feature called "Inadequacies." In this section, they gave a quote for each car that was up for 10Best contention, but didn't make it, briefly summarizing its shortcomings. Lots of interesting insight, if you ask me! Remember that Car & Driver has a full set of tests they run to select their 10Best cars, many of them on a track, so it's not just a group of editors sitting in a room and picking which ones they like best. So, here they are:
Audi A6: "Way more luxury than sport here."
Audi A7: "It's like Audi tried to make a Tesla Model S out of a gas-powered car. Needs more sound and fury. But I guess that's what the S7 is for."
Audi RS5: "The RS5 used to have a howling V-8 and gobs of personality. This one feels sedate in comparison."
BMW i3s: "Even in its marginally sportier guise, the BMW i3 continues to be as far as you can get from the experience of driving a car while still driving a car."
BMW 640i xDrive GT: "Drives like a hockey arena."
Buick Regal GS: "The name vastly oversells its performance."
Buick Regal TourX: "Less than the sum of its parts, attractive though they are."
Honda Clarity PHEV: "As far as the effort to remove all sensory traces of dynamic motivational activity under the hood goes, this thing is a champ. The ultimate anodyne driving experience."
Honda Insight: "What to buy when you really want a Prius but can't bear to look at one."
Hyundai Accent: "There's an awful lot of competence here for the money. Not necessarily much joy but an awful lot of competence."
Hyundai Veloster: "The N splits the difference between a VW GTI and a Civic Type R without being better than either. And like all Velosters, this one is still burdened by its economy-car ethos and weird design."
Jaguar XF Sportbrake: "It's handsome as all get-out, but the interior isn't as nice as it should be, the powertrain is not as refined as it should be, and the chassis isn't as fun as it should be."
Kia Forte: "Manages the strange trick of looking cheaper than it actually is."
Lexus ES/Hybrid: "Was the dashboard designed to win a bet? It is more terraformed than styled, with various vintages of switchgear and instruments."
Lexus LS: "I'm startled by how removed from the driving experience this car has become. Like changing lanes from your bed."
Mazda 6 2.5T: "Very refined but doesn't feel sharp. This has me worried that Mazda is starting to walk away from sportiness in favor of luxury."
Mercedes-Benz C-Class: "Much improved but still not as satisfying as the E-class."
Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class: "No longer better looking or handier than the E-class, so I fail to see the point."
Nissan Altima: "Rental-car desk agents should see a dramatic decrease in arguments with disgruntled customers."
Nissan Leaf: "A car that is crying out for automation to remove the irksome requirement to operate it."
Porsche Panamera: "Breaks Porsche's rule of functional design. Who thought that air vents that can have their direction changed only through a touchscreen was a good idea?"
Subaru WRX STI Type RA: "A relic from Subaru's Brutalist period, it's the antithesis of what 96 percent of its customer base values: It's loud, harsh, and busy. It's also incredibly fun, especially on gravel."
Toyota Avalon/Hybrid: "It exists for cruising the mega-slab, but there are no interstates on the 10Best loop."
Toyota Corolla Hatchback: "Good enough to make the 10Best list -- in 2008."
Volkswagen Jetta: "If the Golf is the sibling that lives in the suburbs, pulling down good scratch and maxing out its 401(k), the Jetta is the poor relation sheltering under a cardboard box at the bus station."
To clarify, there were a couple other vehicles that didn't make the list, but were close enough that their acknowledgements were less... mean. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio was well-loved by nearly everyone, but had so many issues that needed to be serviced when they had one long term, it was basically out of the running. The Tesla Model 3 Performance did very well too, but since it starts at nearly $80k, it was very hard to justify its value vs competitors. The Audi RS3 was on the 10Best list last year, but this year there was no way they were picking it over the M2 Competition, which has better performance and an improved ride vs its non-Competition predecessor, leaving C&D to look at the RS3 less as a threat and more as "a really expensive, really powerful VW Golf with a really small trunk." Harsh words. The Kia Stinger GT almost made the list last year, and the Kia Stinger 2.0T almost made it this year, but the Genesis G70 better captured the hearts of the C&D editors. The Camaro was bumped from the list by the newly-refreshed Mustang, not necessarily because the Mustang is the clear winner, but because Chevy's 2019 "refresh" of the Camaro gave each trim a new grille and not much else, preserving issues with livability in the cabin in the name of exterior design. And finally, Dodge brought some Challengers to the 10Best competition, for the third time in five years, but all they've done each time was add more power to a car that hasn't been fully redesigned in about 10 years.
Finally, here's a reminder of the 10 cars that did win this year:
BMW M2 Competition
Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport/Z06
Ford Mustang GT/Bullitt
Genesis G70
Honda Accord
Honda Civic Sport/Si/Type R
Mazda MX-5 Miata/RF
Mercedes-Benz E450/AMG E53
Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman
Volkswagen Golf Family

Britain’s most and least reliable cars revealed
- Six models achieve a perfect 100% reliability rating in the annual What Car? Reliability Survey of more than 16,000 drivers - Lexus rated most reliable brand, followed by Dacia and Suzuki - Fiat named least reliable brand by What Car? readers, with Land Rover also struggling - Hybrids and Small SUVs rated most reliable types of car, while Luxury SUVs suffer highest number of faults - Of the 16,328 drivers surveyed, 20% experienced a fault with their car in the past 12 months - To see all of the 2021 What Car? Reliability Survey results, visit: www.whatcar.com/news/2021-what-car-reliability-survey/n23397
The UK’s most and least reliable new and used cars have been revealed in the 2021 What Car?
Reliability Survey from Britain’s leading new car buying platform and consumer champion. Feedback from more than 16,000 car owners was analysed to find the country’s most dependable 178 models and 30 brands, from nearly new cars to those aged up to five years old. This year, a record six models achieved a score of 100%: the current versions of the Audi TT, Mazda CX-3, Mini Convertible and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, and the previous-generation Dacia Sandero and Honda HR-V. At brand level, Lexus and Dacia models were hailed as the most dependable for new and used buyers, while Fiat and Land Rover achieved the lowest scores. Lexus gained an overall rating of 98.7% and none of its vehicles scored lower than 98.4%. Budget brand Dacia also impressed with a 97.3% overall rating, demonstrating that you don’t have to break the bank to buy a dependable model. In contrast, Fiat had the least reliable cars, gaining an 82.0% rating from owners, while Land Rover and Ford were second and third worst for reliability. Hybrids were rated as the most durable type of car, with an average class reliability score of 96.9%. The best performing hybrid was the Lexus NX (2014 – present), which managed a 99.8% score, while hybrid variants of the BMW X5 (2018 – present) were rated least reliable, with 89.7%. Luxury SUVs performed the worst in the study, achieving an average class rating of 88.8%, although the Porsche Macan (2014 – present) bucked the trend, managing a creditable 97.9%. The Land Rover Discovery (2017 – present) received the lowest score in this class with a 72.1% result. Owners were asked whether their car had gone wrong in the past 12 months, how long repairs took and how much they cost, with the overall score expressed as a percentage. Of the 16,328 drivers surveyed, 20% had experienced a fault with their car in the past year, with 85% of faults repaired free of charge. For 7% of drivers, the repairs cost between £101 and £500, while 2% had to pay more than £1500 to get their car back on the road. A third of cars remained driveable and were fixed within a day, while 25% could be driven but took more than a week to repair. What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “The UK’s used car market is currently booming, making it all the more important that people know which models will be reliable. With feedback from more than 16,000 owners, the latest What Car? Reliability Survey highlights the brands and models with the best and worst records. “Our latest study also shows that a high price tag isn’t always a guarantee of reliability, because some of Britain’s cheapest cars are among the most reliable.” Top 10 most reliable brands (cars up to five years old) Brand Reliability Rating Lexus98.7%Dacia97.3%Suzuki97.1%Hyundai97.1%Toyota97.0%Mini97.0%Mitsubishi96.9%Mazda95.9%Kia95.8%MG95.7% Bottom 10 most reliable brands (cars up to five years old) Brand Reliability Rating Fiat82.0%Land Rover82.5%Ford86.2%Nissan86.2%Alfa Romeo86.5%Porsche89.4%Mercedes-Benz89.6%Vauxhall89.6%Peugeot89.6%Jaguar90.1% Reliability results by vehicle classes (cars up to five years old) Hybrid cars – 96.9% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableLexus NX (2014 – present) – 99.8%BMW X5 (2018 – present) – 89.7% Small SUVs – 95.2% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableHonda HR-V (2015 – 2020) – 100% Mazda CX-3 (2016 – 2019) – 100% Peugeot 2008 (2013 – 2019) – 81.8% MPVs – 93.7% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableBMW 2 Series Active Tourer (2014 – present) – 98.8% Volkswagen Touran (2015 – present) – 74.1% Family SUVs – 93.6% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableMitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2017 – present) – 100% Range Rover Evoque (2011 – 2019) – 77.1% Large SUVs – 93.6% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableBMW X3 petrol (2018 – present) – 97.7% Nissan X-Trail (2014 – present) – 59.7% Family cars – 93.0% class reliability ratingMost ReliableLeast ReliableBMW 1 Series petrol (2011 – 2019) – 98.7% Mercedes-Benz A-Class (2018 – present) – 84.8% Electric cars – 92.9% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableNissan Leaf (2011 – 2018) – 98.6% Jaguar I-Pace (2018 – present) – 86.3% Coupes, convertibles and sports cars – 92.8% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableAudi TT (2014 – present) – 100% Mini Convertible (2016 – present) – 100% Porsche 718 Cayman (2015 – present) – 73.5% Executive cars – 92.8% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableSkoda Superb petrol (2015 – present) – 99.2% Mercedes-Benz C-Class diesel (2014 – present) – 80.9% Small cars – 91.9% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableDacia Sandero (2013 – 2020) – 100% Ford Fiesta (2017 – present) – 74.9% Luxury cars – 90.4% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliableBMW 5 Series petrol (2017 – present) – 96.9% Audi A6 (2011 – 2018) – 82.1% Luxury SUVs – 88.8% class reliability rating Most ReliableLeast ReliablePorsche Macan petrol (2014 – present) – 97.9% Land Rover Discovery (2017 – present) – 72.1% Read the full article

Top 10 Most Popular Cars For Sale In South Africa
While the new car market continues to struggle in South Africa, the used market moved R10.2 billion in car sales in January, according to online marketplace AutoTrader, which claimed its best-ever month.
Two factors indicate that the used car market is recovering:
A negative trend in the volume of used car listings has turned around to being flat in January 2020. This is a good proxy for market supply.
The number of sales has accelerated from a 6 month average of 7% to almost 11% in January 2020 versus January 2019. This is a good lagging indicator of consumer demand.
AutoTrader chief executive, George Mienie, said January 2020 was a record-breaking month in the history of AutoTrader presence online. “Car dealers listed more cars, and consumers searched for more cars than ever before,” he said. Exciting stuff thinking there are more cars for sale in Midrand to choose from, at least for me!
Citing the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), Mienie noted that the new car market was -8.1% down in January 2020 (versus January 2019).
“With consumer buying patterns shifting from new to used, we reached our highest numbers in terms of searches, page views, leads and sessions last month. Just over 36 000 used cars were sold in January 2020 alone – with a cumulative selling price of over R10.2 billion. This is an increase of over 3,500 (10.8%) cars and R900 million (9.7%) over January 2019,” he said.
According to Mienie, the majority of used car sales in January occurred in Gauteng. “Gauteng accounted for 59% of total sales, with 15% coming from Western Cape and 13% hailing from KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.
The average selling price for used cars in January was R283,734 – with the average mileage being 73,368 km. The average age of used vehicles sold in January 2020 was five years and four months.
The Volkswagen Polo was the top-selling used car in January 2020. It was followed by the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Volkswagen Polo Vivo and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mienie said.
The most searched brand in January was BMW. “It was interesting to see searches for BMW increased by a considerable 54.77% versus December 2019. Volkswagen was the second most searched for the brand, followed by Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Audi,” Mienie said.
It was also interesting to see the different shopping preferences in the various provinces. “The Ford Ranger was the top-selling used vehicle in Limpopo, the North West, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Gauteng. The Polo was the most popular used car in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State. In the Northern Cape, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class clocked in tops,” said Mienie.
Turning to body types, the most popular used sports utility vehicle (SUV) in January was the Toyota Fortuner. “The C-Class was the most popular coupé and also the most popular sedan while the Polo was the top-selling hatchback. The Nissan NP200 reigned supreme in the single cab rankings while the Ranger was the top-selling double cab in January 2020,” Mienie said.

A Tiny Part’s Big Ripple: Global Chip Shortage Hobbles the Auto Industry Around the world, auto assembly lines are going quiet, workers are idle and dealership parking lots are looking bare. A shortage of semiconductors, the tiny but critical chips used to calibrate cars’ fuel injection, run infotainment systems or provide the brains for cruise control, has sent a shudder through the automaking world. A General Motors plant in Kansas City closed in February for lack of chips, and still hasn’t reopened. Mercedes-Benz has begun to hoard its chips for expensive models and is temporarily shutting down factories that produce lower-priced C-Class sedans. Porsche warned dealers in the United States this month that customers might have to wait an extra 12 weeks to get their cars, because they lack a chip used to monitor tire pressure. The French automaker Peugeot, part of the newly formed Stellantis automaking empire, has gone so far as to substitute old-fashioned analog speedometers for digital units in some models. The disruption could not come at a worse time. Demand for cars has bounced back strongly from the pandemic slump, with consumers ready to spend money they saved over the past year, eager to avoid airplanes by taking road trips. The supply of semiconductors is depriving carmakers of a chance to make up sales they lost. “We have already a robust demand situation being more held back by the semiconductor issue than anything else,” Ola Källenius, the chief executive of Daimler, said in an interview. Some automakers, such as Renault, have begun to triage their chips, reserving them for more costly models that bring more profit. “We’re trying to find an intelligent way to prioritize cars with the higher margins,” Clotilde Delbos, Renault’s deputy chief executive, told analysts on Thursday. Some buyers may be lucky enough to take home a new car, but it may lack options that use specialized chips. Porsche has told U.S. dealers that for several months it won’t be able to deliver high-end seats in the Macan S.U.V. that can be adjusted 18 different ways, a popular upgrade. The necessary chips are unavailable. One big reason automakers can’t find enough chips is that semiconductor manufacturers have given priority to manufacturers of smartphones, video game consoles and other consumer electronics, which tend to be more lucrative customers. A modern car can easily have more than 3,000 chips. But cars account for a tiny share of chip demand. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, is one of the few makers of a variety of chips vital to auto manufacturing, but in 2020 carmakers generated only 3 percent of the company’s sales, according to Roland Berger, a German consulting firm. TSMC’s most important customers are smartphone makers, which accounted for half of sales. Smartphones outnumber cars by a wide margin. In 2019, before the pandemic disrupted global economies, auto factories churned out 93 million vehicles compared with smartphone production of 1.4 billion units. Over all, the chip shortage and other supply chain snarls curtailed production by 1.3 million vehicles in the first three months of the year, according to IHS Markit, a consultancy. The problem has become a concern for political leaders in Washington and other capitals. Peter Altmaier, the German economics minister, recently appealed to his counterpart in Taiwan, a global center for semiconductor manufacturers, asking in so many words whether the Taiwanese minister couldn’t help shake loose a few chips urgently needed by German carmakers. The chip shortage “has become a serious problem for manufacturers, especially the auto industry,” a group of German economic research institutes warned in a joint report this month. Today in Business Updated April 23, 2021, 10:07 a.m. ET The crisis has exposed not only how dependent the car industry is on a few suppliers, but also how vulnerable it is to disruptions. Supply chain managers shuddered last month when an early-morning fire knocked out production at a factory owned by Renesas Electronics in Hitachinaka, Japan, north of Tokyo. Renesas is a crucial supplier of chips used to monitor brake functioning, control power steering, trigger airbags and in many other tasks. Weather has also played a role. Storms in Texas earlier in the year temporarily forced the shutdown of three semiconductor factories. And Taiwan is in the midst of a severe drought, analysts at IHS Markit warned in a recent report. Chip manufacturing requires large amounts of very pure water. Even without a pandemic and supply chain disruptions, the auto industry is in turmoil. In the United States, sales have been basically flat since the early 2000s. Profit margins are slim. Some big automakers may not survive the shift to electric cars. “If I were a chip manufacturer I wouldn’t start investing in a new plant unless I got free money from the government,” said ManMohan S. Sodhi, who teaches supply chain management at the business school at City, University of London. Free money may be on the way. The White House held a summit on the chip shortage this month, and has proposed allocating $50 billion in infrastructure funds to reverse a decline in the share of chip manufacturing that takes place on American shores. But new chip factories can’t be built fast enough to solve the immediate shortage. And unless government subsidies persuade them otherwise, semiconductor makers and other suppliers are likely to build any new factories in or near China, which is the biggest car market and, unlike the United States and Europe, is growing steadily. It’s not at all clear how long the chip famine could last. Mr. Sodhi said that he suspected chip makers were exaggerating the shortage to pry subsidies from governments, and that the crisis could be over in a month. Auto industry consultants at Roland Berger are more pessimistic, saying the shortage could last all year. On Thursday, Ms. Delbos of Renault said “the visibility is deteriorating” for determining an end to the chip crisis, “as news is changing by the day.” In the meantime, automakers are improvising to try to minimize the damage. Daimler’s Mercedes unit is allocating scarce chips to its priciest models, like the EQS electric luxury sedan the company unveiled this month, which is expected to start at around $100,000. The triage prompted Daimler to temporarily shut down factories in Germany that produce lower-priced C-Class sedans. Most of the 18,500 workers at the plants are furloughed until the end of April, though they will continue to receive government subsidized “short work” pay. Along the same lines, Volkswagen has cut production at plants in Germany that make sedans and other internal combustion models, and one in Mexico where the company makes Tiguan S.U.V.s for the American market. But a factory in Zwickau, Germany, that produces ID.3 sedans and ID.4 S.U.V.s, the vanguard of Volkswagen’s drive to dominate the emerging market for electric cars, has not been affected, according to the company. General Motors, which has had to halt production temporarily at a half-dozen plants since the beginning of the year, has in some cases been producing cars without electrical components and parking them until the parts are available. Ford Motor said Wednesday that it would keep several U.S. plants idle longer than expected because of the chip shortage. The auto industry has been paralyzed by supply chain disruptions before. Mr. Källenius recalled an episode when a hurricane struck Puerto Rico and shut down production at a factory that, to his surprise and pretty much everyone else’s, was the only source of a coating essential to some kinds of auto electronics. Automobiles have tens of thousands of parts and so many layers of suppliers and sub-suppliers and sub-sub-suppliers that even carmakers have trouble keeping track of every component’s provenance. The economics of the industry are such that only suppliers with the highest volume survive. Smaller suppliers tend to die out because they can’t produce parts or materials as cheaply as the big players, leaving the industry dependent on one or two manufacturers of high-pressure fuel lines, for example, or a certain specialized plastic. The current semiconductor shortage may not be the last. The auto industry’s need for semiconductors is expected to explode in coming years because of autonomous driving features and the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, which are more reliant on software than internal combustion engines. Mr. Källenius said, though, that the most sophisticated chips were not the ones currently giving him headaches. “We are missing the most simple of chips, that maybe only cost cents or dollars,” he said. “That’s holding us up from building a product that costs $75,000.” Source link Orbem News #Auto #Big #Chip #Global #Hobbles #Industry #parts #Ripple #shortage #tiny
