Riding the wave to memory-forming genetics
Riding the wave to memory-forming genetics
Above illustration shows a neuron (green) ensheathed by an oligodendrocyte (purple) with “activated” genetic material (DNA) in each cell’s nucleus. Differences in each cell type’s active DNA may underlie human memory. Credit: Melissa Logies UT Southwestern scientists have identified key genes involved in brain waves that are pivotal for encoding memories. The findings, published online this week…

The human brain has the fascinating ability to store memories like we do books on a bookshelf. Most of the time we do not think about them, but whenever we want to access one, all we have to do is take them off the shelf. Similarly, our brains keep records of places, events, and experiences in a memory bank, ready to access whenever we want - sometimes many years after the event took place. But how is this actually made possible? Scientists have known for a while that the hippocampus is

Consider Phlebas: The Command System: Terminus part 3
“Memoryform. The gun was part of me; looks like a real tooth.”
On one hand, yeah that’s smart, it saved Balveda’s life in this situation. On the other hand, now everyone who ever captures a Culture Citizen or anyone they suspect of being a Culture citizen has a reason to remove their teeth and whatever other non-essential parts of themselves they might hide a gun in.
“My name!” he moaned, an anguish in his voice even more awful than that on his face. “What’s my name?”
Oh come on, you can’t keep on teasing us with Horza’s identity issues and then not explain what’s going on. Sure, there have been hints, but I definitely wouldn’t say that’s enough to have anything but a good guess about whatever’s going on with him. The last sections better have some real answers.
There are three people left: Horza, Balveda and Unaha-Closp. It’s going to be interesting to see how Horza’s going to deal with losing Yalson, failing at his mission and even delivering the Mind to the Culture’s hands and on top of it all being saved by a Culture agent. No doubt Balveda’s going to have at least some trauma from this, she did start to like Horza and Yalson enough by the end that she was truly trying to save him at the end, and on top of that she really thought for a moment that she was about to die. Unaha-Closp, on the other hand, may or may not be irreparably broken, and I don’t know what even might happen to him. Return to factory settings? Move to another chassis? Just decommission?
