Virginia Montague Copeland, who always went by Jean, went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 26, 2022.

Born on February 9, 1930 in Spartanburg, SC, to parents Alex Montague Copeland and Mary Virginia Hannon Copeland, Jean grew up in Spartanburg and graduated from Bob Jones University. After witnessing within her immediate family severe illnesses and the medical successes that innovative treatments could produce, she came to Atlanta to study nursing. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Emory and a Masters in Nursing Administration from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Her professional career was entirely within the Emory University Health System, where she worked tirelessly to improve patient care. One example was her co-invention of the single-use alcohol sponge to prevent cross-contamination, for which a manufacturer paid her $100. Her new ideas for patient care, organization, and staffing of the hospital led to increasing responsibility at Emory Hospital and later at Emory’s Wesley Woods Geriatric Center. She retired in 1995 after a long and important career, which included helping plan and design the way people with dementia could safely receive acute care when needed in what was then the newly built Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital. Tall, graceful, and gracious, Jean was an insightful and inspiring “servant leader” professionally and a loyal friend to many in her life.

Jean’s mother was the person who led her daughter to accept Christ as her Savior. This decision was the most momentous of her life, which has been guided and illuminated by her deep faith. She was a long-time member of First Alliance and then First Baptist Church of Atlanta and counted many of its members among her best friends. She is survived by her sister, Katherine Bruce Montgomery of Spartanburg, as well as many friends and namesakes, all of whom loved her deeply and considered Jean to be part of their own families.

On March 16, 2021, the connection was severed. Her presence will be missed as she was an outspoken lifeline to the Pompano community. Hazel was the oldest daughter of 8 children born to the parentage of Cora Jane Kelley and Joe Kelley. Her name, ‘Hazel’, meaning “God sees”, embodied the persona of a strong but determined person of authority and protection. It was destined that she would be a trailblazer and do great things to write the story of her legacy.

For the many impressive and notable women who have transitioned from this fair city to the other side of glory, the name, Hazel Armbrister will be added to the list. Again, We speak her name ...as she was a quiet but discerning woman who wore many hats, titles, and recognitions that spoke to the heart and conscience of others. She was well known and her name holds great influence in many organizations and places throughout the local areas and as well as the state of Florida; Hazel touched the lives of many from all corners. Hazel lived her legacy and proved that her life served a purpose and her living was not in vain. Although she lived in Pompano for many years, she moved to Broward county in the 50’s, from her birth site, Perry, Florida in hopes of finding a job. Hazel was the caring and loving little big sister who took over the role of ‘mother hen’ to help her mother with the younger siblings. All throughout her life, Hazel had to constantly battle many challenges. It was her inner strength and strong faith that carried her through as she took each to task. Hazel was baptized as a child in Perry and raised in the Triumph Church and Methodist A.M.E. under the watchful eyes of her parents and family. She was a devout Christian and active church member throughout her life. As a young adult, she later joined the Episcopal Church. She was determined to make a successful path on her life’s journey. In doing so, she met the love of her life and soulmate, David “Sparky” Armbrister and together they built a home to support a family. She was the first African American in Broward County to receive her GED in 1953 and later trained as a Teacher’s Aide in 1966. Still on her path to success, she worked and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from USF in 1974. While working in various jobs and raising a family, she later returned to the university and earned her Master’s degree in 1975. Hazel was a courageous trailblazer who was not afraid of a challenge; thus it was her destiny to make big paths in untraveled territory. All throughout her adult life, Hazel’s grace, faith and love were bountiful and equally shared among her family, friends and everyone who met her. She understood her purpose and knew that she was chosen to play the lead role as a critical fulfillment to her Destiny; mediocrity was not in her designed path. As life’s challenges would have it, Hazel proved her worth. Her paths took her from the bean fields to the classroom and she did not allow anything to hinder her determined path. Her self-assigned journey was for the good of restoring history and dignity in the Black community. Hazel was a formidable foe against naysayers and a kind but determined “ humble hellion” for a cause ....We speak her name.

Her strength, confidence and intellect were God’s graces that she shared in all of her destined roles in life: First and foremost, over 27 years, she and David “Sparky” worked as a family unit on a mission until his untimely death; she was a devoted and loving mother of two daughters and a son and several adopted children; Her love and memories for all were unparalleled; she was a dedicated and faithful lector at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church; her impressive professional life was initiated as she was the first African American teacher’s aide in Broward County and moved on to become a remarkably dedicated teacher who taught school for over 33 years. As We speak her name, Hazel, we must recognize her savvy leadership and teaching skills that extended far beyond the classroom: she was a teacher of life; Many will remember her not only as a focused trailblazer but more so a staunch community leader/activist and political aspirant; she was former chair and vice chair of the Broward Democratic Club. Hazel was well known and respected for her parliamentary procedures in the local and state political arena; Many believed she helped write the Robert’s Rules of Order. Hazel loved her community and worked hard to help upgrade and maintain its integrity. She was not only actively involved in many social, religious and civic organization but in many she held important positions: Pompano Beach Historian, President and a founding member of her beloved Rock Road Restoration Historical Group, First African American member and president of the Pompano Beach Women’s Club, former Chair of Broward County Historic Preservation and dedicated member and former chair of Elly Lodder Daughters of the King Chapter. When We speak her name, we can be assured that if there is an issue/mission, she, Hazel Armbrister, was actively involved as a champion for the cause. Hazel worked and showed up for the people who loved her thus the severed line to family, friends and the community will leave a prominent gap in the hearts and lives of many. She did her life right, she fulfilled her mission and left no dashes or stones unturned. Doris Elaine Bare, age 77, of Elkin, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Chatham Nursing Center. She was born October 12, 1941 in Locust, N.C. Ms. Bare was preceded in death by a brother, Junior Simpson and three daughters, Tammy Mastin, Janet Spark, Catherine Griffith.

           Surviving are her son, Ricky C. Bare and wife Teresa of Hays; daughters, Samantha E. Branaman and husband Ken of Bloomington, Indiana, Lori Mastin and husband Keith of Ronda; and sister, Elaine Simpson of Locust, N.C.; grandchildren, Gage Branaman, Jesse Walker, Jonathan Walker, Cory Walker, Kayla Mastin, Matthew Mastin, Joshua Johnson, Lauren Johnson, Dustin Bare, Anthony Stone, Bobby Sprinkle, Shannon Arthur, Brent Couch, Megan Eggers; and thirteen great grandchildren.

William Barnes, 51 William Edward "Chubby" Barnes, age 51, of Roaring River, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Curis Nursing Home in Wilkesboro. He was born January 25, 1967 to William Parker and Sarah Barnes Jackson. Mr. Barnes was a member of Mt. Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Ronda and employed with Tyson Foods for 28 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the Pittsburg Steelers football and Duke basketball. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his parents.

           Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Angela Bailey Barnes; three sisters, Mea Rosetta Barnes of Taylorsville, Althea Howell of Boomer, Saretta Redmon of Wilkesboro; three brothers, Dale Barnes of North Wilkesboro, Pete Barnes and Vincent Barnes both of Wilkesboro; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

           Funeral service will be January 24,   at Miller Funeral Chapel with Pastor Casey Walker, Pastor John S. Bailey II and Rev. Ronald Howell officiating. Burial will  follow in Mt. Mr. Herbert Curtis Taylor, age 89 passed away Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Wilkes Senior Village.

           Funeral services           were   January 20, at Stony Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Boyce and Rev. David Testerman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.  

           Mr. Taylor was born March 14, 1929 in Ashe County to John McKinley and Dorthy Payne Taylor.  He served in the United States Army. He was a member of Stony Hill Baptist Church and served as a deacon.

           In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife; Wilma Whittington Taylor, a son; Mark E. Taylor, a grandson; Jeremy T. Taylor, two sisters; Della Faye Miller and Nora Mae Cathey and one brother; Ralph Taylor.

           He is survived by two sons; David Taylor and wife Teresa of Purlear and Scott Taylor and wife Jennifer of Alpharetta, GA, daughter-in-law Pauline Taylor of Purlear, seven grandchildren; Christopher D.            Mrs. Parsons was born June 23, 1928 in Wilkes County  to Lawrence W. and Martha S. Shew Anderson. She was a member of Gordon Baptist Church.                          

           In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Leff Parsons, two sisters; Oma Harrold and Stella King, a step-daughter; Cora Sue Wagoner and three step-sons; Leff Parsons, Jr., Jimmy Parsons and Tommy Parsons.

           Engineer from Flavorich. Bill loved playing country music. Bill's favorite song, "Go Rest High" will be performed by special music guest, Lloyd Church. Mr. Farrington was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Emogene Cardwell Farrington.

Norma Jean Reid

Norma Jean Reid, 78, of Alpharetta, GA, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2019, after being under hospice care for two weeks. A native of Spartanburg, SC, she was the wife of the late Hollis Larry Reid and the daughter of the late Ester Allison Burns and Lewis “Fox” Washington Burns, Sr. Jean was a graduate of Chapman High School Class of 1959. She went on to earn a Bachler of Arts Degree in Music from Converse College in 1963. She was a wonderful organist who played because she dearly loved to play, who played like an angel and could grab your heart with her gift of music. Jean would bring joy through her music at five different churches, spanning 68 years: First Tryon Baptist Church in Tryon, North Carolina, Morningside Baptist Church, Fernwood Baptist Church, and Bethel United Methodist Church, all of which are in Spartanburg, SC, and Inman Mills Baptist Church in Inman, SC. She also shared her gift of music through her membership with the Music Club of Spartanburg and The American Guild of Organist. Survivors include her son, Lewis Reid of Alpharetta, GA; her daughter, Lisa Reid Smith (Toney) of Woodruff, SC; two grandsons, Reid Smith and Thomas Smith. She was also predeceased by her brother, Lewis Washington Burns, Jr. Visitation will be at 6:30 – 8:30 PM Friday, April 26, 2019 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Single Review: “King of Alabama” by Brent Cobb

Brent Cobb will return with Providence Canyon, the follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut release in 2016 being set for release on May 11th (and out on Elektra Records). Cobb, who stands at the forefront of the newer wave of country artists emerging from the Nashville scene who are taking country music back to its more traditional ways, is sticking with being a purveyor of classic country music. So suggests the first single released from Providence Canyon, ensuring country music purists from all around will continue to gravitate to the work that Cobb produces. This newest single exemplifies that perfectly, “King of Alabama” being a powerful ode to the late troubadour Wayne Mills. It’s a tribute to the musician whose life was cut tragically short, “King of Alabama” being a testament to the passion and dedication that Mills exhibited. Cobb is quick to acknowledge that he really more just knew Mills, which makes what he says all the more meaningful as he depicts his respect and admiration for the musician, from his caring personality to his ability as an artist and, as one verse so eloquently says, “…He beat the blacktop down with a five-piece band. Not because he loved it - he did that too – but… 'cause that's what he was born to do.”

With a runtime of about four-minutes, it’s somewhat remarkable all of the emotions that Cobb is able to pack in to the track. He effortlessly conveys the full extent of his admiration for Mills, fondly recalling the better days and how seemingly inspiring he found it that Mills was driven by and kept it all about the music. “King of Alabama” ventures into some somber territory when touching on what happened, Cobb’s voice changing subtly, still sounding shocked by what happened; another line stating that he still feels Mills’ presence when he performs.
