Milla: "Listen--listen to me! You don't want to do this!" Melvin: "Shut up! Shut up!" Milla: "Matt told me about you. You're Melvin Potter...you're a friend to him... Please...just let me go..." Melvin: "Not yet. But soon...soon you'll go...and you won't like it." Milla: "Is that really what you want to be? A monster? A killer? What happened to the gentle, sweet man...the one who was good with his hands, who liked to sew?" Daredevil vol. 2 # by Ed Brubaker, Michael Lark, Stefano Gaudiano, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulos
Milla frequently found herself menaced and unable to do much about it beyond freak out. While I wish she hadn't been menaced quite so often, the freaking out in itself made in-character sense. Milla existed at an interesting point in the tradition of Daredevil's love interests: she was in obvious conversation with previous love interest conventions and had a lot of agency in her own personal relationship with Matt, and the freedom to make her own choices, but she was also far from being a cool-headed action hero (in comparison to, say, Kirsten McDuffie, who was a civilian but also able to beat up bad guys). Milla was no coward, but when scary things happened to her, she was quite helpless due to not having any combat expertise, and so was realistically scared. I mean, if Typhoid Mary showed up and started setting people on fire with her mind, I'd freak out too.
Given this, I wanted to highlight this little moment from the Brubaker/Lark run, which is notable, particularly given how much of a victim Milla became under Brubaker's pen. While she does end up needing Matt to save her in this scene, she still gets a little moment of courage and heroism, where she has the presence of mind to try to talk her way out of danger. And it's a smart strategy; Melvin Potter is a good person who hates violence, and while Milla hasn't experienced that side of Melvin personally, she is able to use what Matt has told her about his Daredevilling to try and save herself. It's a brief moment, but I really like it.

Finally finished episode 13. I have questions...
Where were the rest of the Defenders during the entire season? I was half expecting Danny (at the very least) to check up on Matt (or who he would have thought to be Matt) when Dex started showing up in the Daredevil suit (since Danny was watching over Hell's Kitchen at the end of The Defenders).
Matt said something before he told us to leave. He said, "Protect my city." – Danny Rand [The Defenders 1x13]
Especially once the KILLING started? That alone would have been a lightbulb moment... as in hey, I don't think THAT'S Daredevil (or even... oh, the guy finally snapped, we need to stop him before he hurts anyone else), and the three heroes band together once more.
(Okay, that would have made Daredevil a completely different show altogether but some continuity would have been nice. Name-dropping Jessica Jones in one episode does not count!)
Continuity issues aside, it was great watching our boy make catwalk his way into the hotel after he'd cleverly goaded Dex into doing all the heavy lifting for him (and the final three-way showdown). Nicely done, Mr Lawyer Vigilante sir.
“I’m coming for you, Dex. And my suit.”
(Perfect soundtrack for this scene: Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees. Trust me on this.)
I was also genuinely surprised that Dex left Fisk’s pre-ballroom security alive, since he tends to kill indiscriminately when he's angry. Then again, they are fellow agents and he can be pretty focused. Dex didn't take out Matt when he had the chance the first time they fought, mostly because killing the Man in the Mask wasn't his main objective. (A decision I'm sure he sorely regretted seeing that he did try to end Matt during their fight at the choir loft.)
[On that note, a special shoutout to Mr Potter: Holy horns, Melvin, that's one heck of a suit upgrade!
Except for the final battle, Dex basically walked away from most of his fights with barely a scratch (unlike poor Matt).]
I still have questions... but Season 3 rocked, including that shot of Matt and his signature rooftop crouch at the end of the Kingpin’s storyline.
Fantastic series. 10/10 would recommend. Favourite season: Season 3, followed by Seasons 1 and 2.

Daredevil #140 (Mantlo/Buscema, Dec 1976). Things seem darker and more violent than ever. Matt chases a runaway bus when its driver has a heart attack — and that’s just a prelude to the return of the Beetle and the Gladiator! It’s weird ‘cause Matt still enjoys the thrill, so he’s quipping bravely through it all… But Gladdy gets some good slices in, so Matt’s joking as he’s bleeding out. Somehow this all feels like finally the right space for this character.
