Genre Spotlight: Plugg
Plugg is a trap subgenre that came to be during the early-mid 2010s, thanks to producers like MexikoDro and StoopidXool, and artists such as Playboi Carti and Diego Money.
Origins of the genre are often credited to the production style of Zaytoven, which, as is typical of much of Southern hip hop, often drew from Gospel and Soul influences.

The name Plugg is derived from the original Atlanta-based 'Beat Pluggz' collective, which was started in 2013 by StoopidXool, A$ATT, Trapalot Muzik, and BeatPluggTwo, later to be joined by artists such as MexikoDro, Polo Boy Shawty, and Corey Lingo.
MexikoDro is the producer behind the iconic 'Plugg!' producer tag, which he chopped from a soundbite from BeatPluggTwo.
Plugg is characterized by its trap-derived beats, paired with nostalgic (and relatively minimal) melodies that primarily rely on dreamy keys and airy synths and pads. Plugg can be described as a more melodic, ethereal offshoot of the trap genre. Though Plugg tracks tend to feature lyrical content and rap flows typical of the trap, the addition of these dreamy melodies, minimal hi-hats, and booming 808s creates an interesting juxtaposition between the lyrical content and sonic atmosphere of these tracks that many fans find compelling.
The Plugg sound is widely acknowledged as one of the most definitive sounds of the alternative/underground hip-hop scene during the 'Soundcloud rap' era that was so emblematic of the mid 2010s, particularly between the years 2015-2018.
Some key artists of the Plugg era include Playboi Carti, UnoTheActivist, Diego Money, Rich The Kid, Thouxanbanfauni, Famous Dex, and Yung Bans.

Why Albania Is the Next Music Destination, According to DJs Ben Böhmer and Moon Boots
The appearance of its first worldwide concert – Kala – in 2018 denoted the start of another section for Albania. DJs Ben Böhmer and Moon Boots give within track on why Albania is the most sultry new objective for music sweethearts. In 2019, Albania facilitated three global electronic performances: Unum, Kala and Explorations, run by record name Anjunadeep. hitet 2021 balada The state's tight power over music during the Communist period just serves to underscore Albania's exceptional change from relative melodic anomaly to celebration area of interest. Every one of these occasions has the Adriatic Coast as a setting – Unum at Shëngjin, Kala and Explorations at Dhërmi. "From my perspective, for Germans, Albania isn't high on the rundown of spots to head out to. It's not on our radar," says German DJ and maker Ben Böhmer. In spite of the fact that he says he came to Albania with no assumptions, Böhmer was "shocked about the blend of mountains and excellent sea shores", alluding to the unspoiled area of Dhërmi, which lies on an incline of the Ceraunian Mountains with perspectives on Greece toward the south. CharacteristicsAlbania's political, military and cultural domination by outside elements has contributed to the country's modern music scene. Albanian music is a fusion of the musics of Southeastern Europe, especially that of the Ottoman Empire, which ruled Albania for more than 500 years. However, the Albanian people kept themselves culturally apart from the Ottomans, with many living in rural and remote mountains. Folk musicAlbanian society music falls into three sylistic gatherings, with other significant music territories around Shkoder and Tirana; the significant groupings are the Ghegs of the north and southern Labs and Tosks. The northern and southern conventions are differentiated by the "tough and courageous" tone of the north and the "casual, delicate and astoundingly lovely" type of the south. muzik shqip 2021 hitet e reja These unique styles are bound together by "the force that the two entertainers and audience members provide for their music as a mechanism for energetic articulation and as a vehicle conveying the story of oral history", just as specific qualities like the utilization of dark rhythms, for example, 3/8, 5/8 and 10/8. Albanian people tunes can be isolated into significant gatherings, the brave stories of the north, and the pleasantly melodic cradlesongs, love tunes, wedding music, work tunes and different sorts of tune. The music of different celebrations and occasions is additionally a significant piece of Albanian people melody, particularly those that observe St. Lazarus Day (the llazore), which inauguarates the springtime. Cradlesongs and mourns are vital sorts of Albanian society melody, and are by and large performed by solo ladies. Northern AlbaniaThe Ghegs from north of the Shkumbini River are known for a distinctive variety of sung epic poetry. Many of these are about Skanderbeg, a legendary 15th century warrior who led the struggle against the Turks, and the "constant Albanian themes of honour, hospitality, treachery and revenge". hitet e reja shqip 2021 balada These traditions are a form of oral history for the Ghegs, and also "preserve and inculcate moral codes and social values", necessary in a society that, until the early 20th century, relied on blood feuds as its "primary means of law enforcement". Styles of epics include këngë trimash (songs of bravery), këngë kreshnikësh, ballads and maje krahi (cries). Major epics include Mujo and Halil and Halil and Hajrije. Southern AlbaniaSouthern Albanian music is soft and gentle, and polyphonic in nature. Vlorë in the southwest has perhaps the most unique vocal traditions in the area, with four distinct parts (taker, thrower, turner and drone) that combine to create a complex and emotionally cathartic melody. Author Kim Burton has described the melodies as "decorated with falsetto and vibrato, sometimes interrupted by wild and mournful cries". This polyphonic vocal music is full of power that "stems from the tension between the immense emotional weight it carries, rooted in centuries of pride, poverty and oppression, and the strictly formal, almost ritualistic nature of its structure". South Albania is also known for funeral laments with a chorus and one to two soloists with overlapping, mournful voices. There is a prominent folk love song tradition in the south, in which performers use free rhythm and consonant harmonies, elaborated with ornamentation and melisma.

An Iconic Welsh Indie Band And An Ace Singer/Songwriter With A Punk Past Are The Latest Acts To Support Crisis
Stuart Mason’s short bio for All Music provides a neat introduction to the iconic indie band Helen Love: “Formed in Cardiff in 1992, the band consisted of the pseudonymous Helen Love on bratty shout-along vocals, Sheena, who is, of course, a punk rocker on buzzsaw guitars, and Roxy and Mark on duelling Casio keyboards, which also doubled as drum machines. Their low-tech, high-energy sound landed them on the estimable U.K. indie Damaged Goods, where they released their statement of purpose with "Formula One Racing Girls" in 1993. The unabashedly adulatory "Joey Ramoney" followed in 1994, itself followed by "Punk Boy," a giant step melodically and lyrically. Helen Love's next step was the 10" EP Summer Pop/Punk Pop, a five-song celebration of "Summer Pop Radio" and related activities that are like a '90s U.K. indie answer to the Beach Boys’ Summer days (And Summer Nights).
Their final release for Damaged Goods, the four-song We Love You EP, was probably their strongest work, but a dispute with the label led to the group signing with the slightly larger Che imprint in 1997. The resulting EPs, Does Your Heart Go Boom and Long Live the UK Music Scene, were made without Sheena, but she was back on board for the group's first full-length album, 2000's Love and Glitter, Hot Days and Muzik. The album was reissued a year later by Damaged Goods with extra tracks added”.
That is just the beginning, there are many more chapters in the tall tale of Helen Love, including guest appearances by the likes of John Peel, Phil Jupitus, Tim Wheeler and Gareth Bale, to name just a few.
Asked by David Owen, in an interview for Nation.Cymru, about the highs and lows of her pop odyssey, the singer named “a Peel session, two Radcliffe sessions, a Lamacq session, staying with Joey (Ramone) for a week, playing Primavera, working with lots of cool indie labels, making some lifelong friends, releasing a ton of 7-inch singles loads of stuff. The lows. None. We never became big enough to fall down, we are not in debt to any label, we never shot up heroin with Kate Moss in a back street pub in Camden. I have never had to watch the Stereophonics. It’s all been good”.
The band’s latest album Songs from Under the Bed Vol II was released in May this year, and you can catch the band at Le Pub in Newport on the 18th of November. It’s just a month before Christmas, so maybe they will give “The Townhall Band”, their contribution to Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas, an airing?

Amos Pitsch is the frontman with Tenement, a punk/hardcore band from Wisconsin. Formed in 2006, their latest album Music Composed for the Motion Picture Smother Me in Hugs was released in 2019. Pitsch released his debut solo album Lake Effect in 2017. A review quoted on his Bandcamp page explains the background to the album: “Lake Effect was designed as a sort of conceptual seasonal album. It deals with the feelings and the psyche of the victims of a Midwestern American winter; the ups and downs - the nostalgia, the beauty, the depression, the bitter cold. A lifetime resident of the Fox River Valley - a geographical region vulnerable to brutal sub-zero winters, and rich with iconic rural midwestern imagery as well as small dusty towns acting as time pieces for decades gone by. The supper clubs, the patch-work farmland, the snow ploughs, ice shanties and road salt are in his blood."
Asked about his fondest Christmas memory in an interview with Post Trash, Pitsch gave this answer: 'Strangely, I think my most enduring memories of Christmas are the dark car rides between visiting relatives and attending church services as a child. Looking out at the empty night whizzing by through the windows and anticipating the following morning with a sense of dreaming that I can hardly fathom now. I also have a really distinct frozen frame in my mind of being a child and climbing a staircase of red carpeting in a large church. Burning candles, red velvet, and feet in dress shoes shuffling around. I guess you could say that a childish sense of innocence about the world that I once had when I was young is my fondest memory.

A fifth of 80º proof, oak-aged, smooth, and golden …
… vocals. Up until now Plunger have had to make do with occasional nips of the whiskey-and-molasses voice of Drew Young, in his occasional singles, but finally thanks to Bourbon & Bad Decisions we’ve got fourteen-tracks-worth of those warm, treacly tones to savour.
Not to mention his way with a grab-you-from-the-off tune: opener Try Me, a relaxed sunny stroll in a Bruce-on-the-West-Coast vein, features organ, piano, slide dobro and Jason Roller’s killer electric guitar hook to reel you in, plus a sweet harmony vox midbreak and a proper ‘Boss’ quiet-piano-building-to-full-band-close finale. You’re Just Too Good To Let Go and A Couple Of Rounds maintain the easygoing ambling pace: Matt McGee’s Meisner-y to the fore bass in the former is accompanied with Dwain Rowe’s swirly Hammond and high “Ooh!”s from Amy Trail and Roan Smith, and some gently melodic 80s guitar noodles; while the latter’s blue collar anthem finds Drew’s honeyed rumble at its lowest, as well as a near a cappella chorus and more Knopflery mellow twiddles.
Rootsier flavours come in the country-troubadourish Don’t Leave This Magic Moon, with acoustic guitar and Steve Holland’s train-track brushes (although there’s still plenty of sophistication in the surprise major-to-minor-and-back shifts and polished multi-vox harmonies) and in the twin-acoustic filigree and chamber-bass (from Kilbey Mears) of Wondering Where This Will End where warm harmonies from Kelly Bayfield and David Booth gently build to a rich a cappella close.
Sing Me A Happy Song employs pedal steel-like shimmer, mandolin and drums for an upbeat Nashville roadhouse love song, while the thumbs-in-belt-loop boogie It’ll Be Soon steps up a gear with rollicking saloon piano and Teletastic twang.
Anthemic progressions and dramatic piano and organ from Steve Peffer lend a touch more Bruciness to Falling Down, before Drew takes a sharp turn into left-field with It’s All Up To You: its tight boppy beat with jangling guitar, busy lithe bass and glam doo-wop interjections (from two Amy’s, Trail and Lott) evoke an Americana M (remember Pop Muzik?) - a feel heightened by the fuzzy guitar-and-synth ‘string’ lines and wall of harmony bvs!
Drew reveals his inner rocker on the last two (regular) tracks, first the excellent rocking southern two-step stomp of Stuck On Believing has stylish electric piano and cymbal-rich drums topped with Scott Neubert’s brassy stinging slide and Amy Trail’s impressive Shaun Murphyesque belt, as well as an edgier lyric (“Americana crooner says ‘shitty’ shock!”) The final studio track is Bourbon And Bad Decisions itself: a jangly rocker with tight bass and drums, and yet more fiery additional vocals from Amy, it also sees Drew injecting a grittier edge before Jason’s smooth slide break leads to a ‘big rock’ ending.
Completing the album are three songs recorded live for BBC Suffolk in 2019 with local luminaries Kev Walford and Kelly Bayfield: the all-acoustic three-part harmony versions adding a folkier vibe to a relaxed Clearly, a fine two-guitar interpretation of Falling Down, and a gentler run at Stuck On Believing with Kelly’s rather more limpid 2nd vox (and a Beeb-appropriate rude word change!)
Having been recorded over a number of years (and locations!) the band line up isn’t a constant, with the core of Neubert/Roller/McGee/Holland joined by rolling cast of guests but everyone brings a very high degree of polish and aplomb to their endeavours, as do engineering/production personnel Robbie Dunne, Kyle Hershman, Ben Lorio, Matt McGee and David Booth.
Drew’s rich, warm tones are matched by a similarly sunny (in songwriting, at least) disposition, there’s no whiny angst, crying-into-your-beer heartache or self-pity wallowing laments; in fact there’s barely a minor note at all - even the rueful regret of the title track is delivered with a wry jauntiness, all of which makes for a very upbeat positive listen.
If your lugholes are tired of musical rotgut then the mature, smooth, well-rounded sounds (with depth and kick aplenty) of Bourbon & Bad Decisions will hit the spot nicely.
Bourbon & Bad Decisions is available in download and CD formats now from here: https://drewyoung.bandcamp.com/album/bourbon-bad-decisiions

CHOZE presents: D.I.Y.
May 2022 - Artist and songwriter CHOZE has recently released an outstanding studio album titled D.I.Y.. The artist managed to capture the sound and feel of alternative grime by delivering a hard-hitting formula, which values great vocals, as well as great instrumental parts. The mix is balanced and direct. As a result, the sound of this release feels very accomplished, something that you would expect from some of the very best music makers on the global scene!
The album features 11 original songs, and there is also room for some amazing features! Keep reading for a deep dive into these songs, track by track!
1) Badderz: This is the first song on the album, and it has a truly amazing introduction, which is almost reminiscent of a prog rock record from the 60s and 70s. The intro gives the album a big and ambitious sound from the start, and when the trap-inspired beat kicks in, the punch is nothing short of massive. The artist’s lyrical flow is distinctive and one-of-kind as well.
2) Wake up (featuring Corps): This collaboration with CHOZE is one of the most insane and unique tracks on the record. The beat is massive, and it has a catchy, dynamic feel that really stands out from the get-go. There is a sense of tension, heightened by the siren-like sounds in the background and the relentless flow of the lyrics: CHOZE is going vicious on this one!
3) Built 4 Dis (featuring Lionart): The intro to this song has a cinematic feel to it, with those keys and string sounds that are reminiscent of old-school gangsta rap or even early trap music. The huge depth of the production is massive, and the featured artist, Lionart, really brings something special to the mix. This is undoubtedly one of the heavy hitters on the album.
4) Drug Muzik (Featuring Skibadee): If you though the album was already hitting hard, we’re getting onto the next level here, as this is one of the most explosive songs on the album for sure. Yet, there is a more unique twist to it, with a faster tempo, some great melodies and a breakbeat drum pattern that almost reminds of earlier drum&bass music.
5) DIY interlude: The interview splits the album in two perfectly, providing a great creative break for the music to unfold.
6) DIY (featuring Shai Sevin): The title track itself is an ode to the DIY ethics: making music with full control and artistic integrity. The artist’s flow on this song is just as powerful and uncompromising as his DIY outlook on music and creativity.
7) Nothing to lose: This track has a very mesmerizing introduction, with some unique samples and a truly accomplished song arrangement. This song also has a great music video.
8) I apologise: This feels like one of the most personal tracks on the record, and it definitely excels at crafting a very ethereal mood. This might be one of the most experimental and unique beats on the album, with a crazy drum arrangement and some amazing reversed and up-tuned chopped vocals adding some melody to the background.
9) Last ones left: This release begins with a lush carpet of melody, and it continues to offer a bit more of a catchy vibe, more melodic than some of the previous songs on the album, but no less daring.
10) Sending me the Signs: This is a fantastic track that dives deeper into some electronic influences. The sound is big, deep and lush, going for a completely different vibe that brings a breath of fresh air to the album.
11) You (Featuring Mum): This is a perfect curtain closer: the melody is immediately catchy and easy to relate to, and the lyrics are almost as personal as it gets on the album!
Check out this album if you like Dizzee Rascal, Skibadee, Gorillaz, The Prodigy, Wiley, Massive Attack, and many more. In particular, you should definitely enjoy D.I.Y. if you do like hard-hitting grime music that’s got a very persona and authentic feel. It’s always quite difficult to truly establish your own identity as a musician, especially if you are an upcoming artist that’s often compared to more established acts. However, CHOZE managed to accomplish that to perfection.
Find out more about CHOZE, and check out D.I.Y., which is now available on some of the web’s best digital music streaming platforms and beyond. There is truly no limit to what artists can accomplish if they truly value creativity, and D.I.Y. is a perfect example of how CHOZE seems to be taking this life lesson to heart.
