Pero estas personas son multimillonarios que no se parecen en nada al empresario promedio que recién comienza. ¿Deberíamos esperar que los nuevos fundadores los emulen en una escala mucho más pequeña? Esa es una pregunta que Bill Gates abordó de frente durante una charla reciente en la firma de capital riesgo VC Village Global.

En el transcurso de una fascinante discusión de una hora que fue desde sus primeros años obsesionado con el trabajo (no recomienda su enfoque de no fines de semana o vacaciones) a su lista de lectura anual (realmente quiere que más personas lean libros), Gates también abordó la cuestión de cuándo los empresarios deberían comenzar a pensar en retribuir a la sociedad.

Impulsado por la moderadora, la fundadora de Eventbrite, Julia Hartz, Gates inició la discusión al recomendar que las nuevas empresas deberían centrarse en devolver desde el principio.

“Siempre estoy tratando de convencer a las compañías de que deberían hacer donaciones de empleados, deducciones de nómina, que las organizaciones sin fines de lucro entren y hablen”, dijo Gates, antes de recomendar “que diferentes partes de la compañía compitan para ser las más generosas” y ofrecer oportunidades para que los empleados aprendan sobre las muchas personas que luchan en situaciones difíciles de la vida, de las cuales es fácil olvidarse cuando estás trabajando en una startup.

Luego la conversación se volvió hacia los fundadores. Gates insistió que ellos también deberían comenzar a dar, incluso antes de que tengan mucho tiempo y dinero para compartir. ¿Por qué vale la pena? Porque aprender a ser un filántropo efectivo es difícil. Lo mejor es comenzar temprano.

“También creo que los fundadores, a pesar de que no van a tener mucha liquidez, deben considerar la idea de elegir una causa local con la que estén comprometidos, a veces con su cónyuge o a veces no necesariamente, para aprender y practicar filantropía”, Gates aconseja a los jóvenes emprendedores.

“Elija una escuela local, por ejemplo, vaya y conozca a las personas que están allí y cuáles son sus desafío”,continúa.

Gates cree que construir un negocio y luego retribuir después simplemente no funciona bien, “porque la filantropía es muy diferente, ya que no hay señales de mercado y la experiencia en medir cosas es bien distinta”.

Sé como Zuckerberg

Al igual que cualquier otra forma de conocimiento, la experiencia sobre cómo garantizar que su donación genere impacto se construye con el tiempo. O, en otras palabras, comenzar temprano lo ayudará a hacer una diferencia mucho mayor más adelante.

“Mark Zuckerberg, comenzó a retribuir a la sociedad mucho más temprana, en sus 30, mientras que yo hice mi donación piloto a finales de los 40”, señala Gates. Debido a esto, es probable que Zuckerberg y su esposa Priscilla Chan hagan una diferencia aún mayor en el mundo.
