AT LAST. between travel, wedding planning, and covid, this kind of fell by the wayside for a bit, but IT'S DONE. my first two act!!!

first of all, wow, otoha minori is great. that could be my entire translation notes. she's so cute. all the musumeyaku in this show are so cute. and the otokoyaku are just as good!! we have suave ikemen beni, loudmouth osananajimi miyaruri, and villain yurika, please, i am a simple creature, act 2 was so hard to sub because i kept blushing. plus, tiny baby kiki and coto! i didn't actually watch this show in full before i started my sub, and wanting to know what happens next was SUCH a motivator, lol. if you're familiar with the manga, it's pretty close except for some things left out or rearranged; if you're familiar with the drama, it is QUITE different. tl;dr this show is SO MUCH FUN, and if you like tropey 00s shoujo it is not to be missed.

yamada tami. all of her lines switch between several regional dialects, so i just kind of..... went ham ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i do not believe in localizing honorifics when a story's set in japan, so. pretend you're all reading manga in 2004 with the little vocab guide in the back cover! i DID translate ojousama, because it's like, half the dialogue, and "my lady" felt romantic.

there's a line about "demon hunting" re: shinobu, which makes sense in the manga where he's referred to as the "white demon" - this got dropped from the script, so i localized it out.

Let's go with one from an obscure fandom (I think) but one of the oldest I have. In very early 2010 I watched “Mei-chan’s butler” (メイちゃんの執事 ) from Fuji TV, adapted from a shojo manga I've never read.

The story goes: after a tragic accident high schooler Mei loses her parents and her home, and discovers that her paternal grandfather is actually obscenely rich & wants her to take the role of heir and successor to the Hongo family - she reluctantly accepts because he threatens to have her parents buried separately. She gets sent to a very posh Lady Academy where she also obtains a (of course handsome and sought after) butler who lives with her but with whom she is specifically forbidden to fall in love. All kinds of hijinks ensue, obviously, and she gets herself a powerful enemy in Lucia-sama who, it turns out has been adopted very young and groomed to become the Hongo heir, and is now losing everything to Mei (including the butler who she's madly infatuated with). Cue rivalries and over the top schemes to get rid of Mei until the dramatic climax where Lucia-sama, heartbroken and desperate, tries to kill herself. Mei saves her, holds her and thanks her for being the reason she got to have a normal, loving childhood, and they cry in each other's arms. Mei and her butler kiss, Lucia-sama goes away to heal and falls for her current butler, they keep writing to each other, and Mei is named heir despite still having none of the necessary skills. The End. 

Of course in canon, all the romances are between the ladies and their butlers because that’s the kind of story it is. BUT. In my imaginary second season, after a long period of rest that keeps them apart, Lucia-sama gets to come back to team up with Mei and become a powerful duo that takes the lead of the Hongo family together (and kick out the awful terrible no good grandfather because frankly, fuck that guy).

The fic I really want to write one day is the epistolary exchange between Lucia-sama and Mei as they are separated. About how they find support in each other during their respective journey - Lucia-sama in relearning healthier ways to love herself and others as well as finding who she is outside of The Heir, Mei in becoming the accomplished woman she can be to take the head of the family without losing who she is in the process. About how they learn, and change, and slowly but surely fall in love with each other. I've never really written anything epistolary, but I love the idea of it and I think that would work really well for those two, giving them the space and the time to grow, both apart and as a pair.

(side note, while I do enjoy most of the lady/butler pairings in the secondary characters, and I'm usually very prompt to go the polyamory route, here I would just ditch both butlers/boyfriends - I do not like them for an extensive list of reason but let's keep it at: I think they suck in general.)

SUMMER 2010 J-dorama watchlist!

After that uneventful Spring 2010 j-dorama season (where only ONE series "passed" my criteria….)

I'm so HAPPY to know there are a lot of shows worth watching this season! :)

I've only been following 3 so far, and am about to watch the 4th one to see if it is "worth it" HAHAHA :P

Those 3 (and the reasons why I've decided to watch them) are:

Hotaru no Hikari 2

I've seen the first season of this romantic comedy. And comparing the korean to the japanese romcoms… I think this is the one that can be classified as closest to being Korean. This series is HILARIOUS. Starring Fujiki Naohito and Ayase Haruka… well. I just LOVE their chemistry on screen. Also, both are talented actors.. specially Fujiki Naohito (who I've seen play MANY roles..yet.. this one is DEFINITELY the MOST hilarious one!)

Aside from the continuation of the 1st series, the reason I've decided to watch this is because the "other" guy will be played by none other than Mukai Osamu… and he's portraying the role that REALLY suits him (kinda same role as the one in Atashinchi no Danshi and Bambino! ..though of course I don't mind him playing the bad/serious guy.. but still, this kind of role suits him BETTER).

I think I like season 2 better than season 1.. at least based on the first few episodes anyway. :) I'm not a fan of romcoms (that are not the shoujo manga type) much but.. I suppose this is an exception.

THOSE MICROBES ARE SO CUTE! Hahaha.. I just fell in love with them that I even decided to watch the anime version (after YEARS of anime fandom hiatus). I'm also planning to read the manga chapters when I find time..

Anyhow, aside from the microbes… the series is just ridiculous. I hate to say it, but that's how I see it. It is.. OUTRAGEOUS… kinda in the same "feel" to it as Yukan Club, Mei-chan no Shitsuji, and Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge.

I'm not a fan of random storylines so maybe that's why I don't like this one as much. But the microbes are really oh so cute. >.>

HAMMER SESSION! You know how sometimes you get exposed to artists and you don't end up liking them right away? ..But in the end.. you DO (after months and years) ..kinda like saying "That artist grew up on me"

WELL. This happened. AGAIN. (The first occurence was.. my ichiban.. who I kinda ignored in Gokusen 3.. but anyway. back to the topic)

For the second time, it has happened. With Hayami Mokomichi. DUE TO THIS SERIES! LOL.

-Hammer Session is like……. Gokusen, Dragon Zakura, and Kurosagi COMBINED.

DO YOU KNOW HOW AWESOME THAT IS!!!!!! LOL.

-aside from Mokomichi Hayami (who I also kinda ignored in Gokusen 2 [I swear, Gokusen.. the starting point of all ikemen leading men]). Shida Mirai also stars in this series.

She's definitely grown. In a positive way. I'd like to see her become kinda like Toda Erika. XD

Higa Manami is also a part of this, and having seen her in Code Blue, Code Blue 2, and Majo Saiban.. I'm confident she'll bring a different flavor into the mix that is HAMMER SESSION. :D :D :D

As for the others I have YET to check out, here are a few info on them (also I'll only include the artists I've encountered before):

Unubore Deka - detective story, comedy starring Nagase Tomoya of TOKIO, Ikuta Toma, Kaname Jun, and Nakashima Mika

Tetsu no Hone - moral dilemma story starring Koike Teppei (aaaw.. he's starting to go for mature roles..)

JOKER Yurusarezaru Sosakan - hero by day, fugitive by night kind of story (Anne and Nishikido Ryo are co-starring too)

Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku - romance.. Matsujun stars (well, Matsujun and romance.. not his fan but.. Matsujun and romance? All too good to pass up)

Gakeppuchi no Eri - self-determination story starring Yamada Yu (probably won't watch this, but we'll see)

Already 3 episodes a week, and 5 other tentative follows.

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO gonna enjoy this season!!!! YEAH!! :]

JAPANESE DORAMA QUICK REVIEW/NOTES

I have done the movies list before and now I feel like how about the doramas hehe well anyway as always these are all my opinions, we all have different opinions so don’t take this too seriously. Doing this 4 dorama per post like the movie review.

Here we go~

JUUI DOLITTLE   |  RATING: 8.5/10

- Oguri Shun x Inoue Mao - Young Suda Masaki <3 - Petssss omg

KAHOKO NO KAHOGO  |  RATING: 10/10

- Mitsuki Takahata is a great actress! I’ve seen her be kind of bitchy, I think this is the first time she’s had an innocent character and she really nailed it. - HajimexKahoko is too cute ugh - I love how the story was more about family and how the overprotected Kahoko turned into someone reliable

KOKORO GA POKITTO NE  |  RATING: 8/10

- Comedy - A group of people who ran away wanting to start their lives again was picked up by this strange guy who is just too kind - How each character is unique made the dorama interesting - I love Kiko so much and I know how she’s full of grace as a model so seeing her act like some tomboy who doesn’t care about her appearance was really fun. 

MEI-CHAN NO SHITSUJI  |  RATING: 7.5/10

- Hiro Mizushima as a butler was hella good but the story lacked - This had great cast or more like the BECK cast (Hiro, Takeru, and Mukai) but this came before BECK - I just finished this because of Hiro :v but if you’re into this kind of butler-master theme give it a shot

Hellooo, I’m gonna be honest it’s been awhileee since I’ve ready any manga. And also I’m severely indecisive ^^;;; (omg I literally half way answering this I’m realising thattt I can list forever.. I just read a lottt during primary school and high school.. so I’ll try stick to 5)

Is it okay if I mention oddly unforgettable mangas that I read in highschool, (these are ones I can never seem to forget and stay in my mind whenever I think of manga and wouldn’t necessarily call my fave.. bc I got no faves)

🌸Koizora (Love sky), this was something that I liked and couldn’t seem to forget since high school and it was lk toxic and cried quite a bit reading it lol. Which is why it’s unforgettable ig

Just finished Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning...

What a fucking ending! I loved nearly everything about it.

My husband Kenshin and my wife Tomoe have been seared onto my heart from the first time I saw that incredible OVA. This movie really brought those two to life and I’m very glad for it.

(I’ve read the manga many years ago btw but I don’t like to talk about it cuz y’all know why. 😐) 

You know, the very first thing I watched with Satoh Takeru was Princess Princess D. That was my very first impression of him, heavens above. (Lbr, it was silly and cute fun but just *phew* garbage, ya feel?). 

And even though that drama was a hot mess, something about Satoh really caught my eye. He had an energy that I was feeling. 

So I followed him to Kamen Rider: Den-O, which I loved and was ultimately the gateway drug for me to get into more of the Kamen saga entries.

And after that, it was a wrap for me. Bloody Monday, Mei-chan no Shitsuji, MW, Bitter Blood...I just fell in love.

When I heard he was playing literally one of my favorite characters of all time, I literally lost my shit.

These last 10 years have been a real fucking journey. The movie series was not perfect, by any means, but I have had an incredible time with it. It’s so rare to get an live action adaptation of an anime that truly lived up to its potential as much as this one did. 

I’m really thankful to Satoh for really giving this role everything and cementing himself in the halls of cinema as one of my favorite performers. These movies lowkey have been a cultural reset when it comes to anime/manga adaptations and J-cinema in general.

I can’t wait to see what Satoh has in store in the future.
