KLH protein is derived only from the hemolymph of the giant keyhole limpet (megathura crenulata), which is native only to a limited stretch of the Pacific Ocean coastline along Southern California and Baja California, Mexico.
KLH can be used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient and has high medical value. Due to high technology barrier and scarce raw material, there are few companies able to produce KLH and biosyn highly monopolizes the market at the moment.
The global keyhole limpet hemocyanin production will increase to 2132g in 2017, from 1570g in 2012, it is estimated that the global keyhole limpet hemocyanin demand will develop with a CAGR of 4.03% in the coming five years.

There are two keyhole limpet hemocyanin genes, termed KLH1 and KLH2 which share around 60% identity at the protein level. Both encode large glycosylated proteins consisting of around 3400 amino acids and a molecular weight of around 390,000 Daltons, excluding the glycosylation. The protein oligomerises to form a barrel shaped didecameric complex which is composed of 20 monomers. Each domain of a KLH subunit contains two copper atoms that together bind a single oxygen molecule (O2). When oxygen is bound to hemocyanin, the molecule takes on a distinctive transparent, opalescent blue color, due to the Cu2+ state of the copper. In the absence of oxygen, the bound copper is found as Cu1+ and hemocyanin is colorless. The KLH protein is potently immunogenic, but does not cause an adverse immune response in humans. It is therefore highly prized as a vaccine carrier protein. Because of its size and glycosylation, KLH protein cannot be reproduced synthetically; it is available only as a purified biological product from the keyhole limpet Megathura crenulata.

Also known as the giant keyhole limpet, the great keyhole limpet is a large species of keyhole limpet (a type of gastropod) native to the coasts of Southern California and Mexico. Like other limpets the giant keyhole limpet is a simple herbivore and feeds mostly on algae and detritus. True to their name great keyhole limpets have a single keyhole like opening on the tops of their shells, this hole allows water to enter the animal and waste leave it. Most of this large limpets shell is covered in its fleshy mantle.
