It could be reading or reviewing a book or comic, watching or rewatching a film or TV episode, diving deep into the past or speculating about the future, and all the while juggling the numerous things happening right now. It also means hitting the road and driving (or occasionally flying) out to events, and it was this that took Fantha Tracks to Birmingham and the National Exhibition Centre for Megacon Live, one of the earliest major events of the UK convention calendar. All manner of franchises were represented at the show, but as alwaysd our focus was firmly set on the galaxy far, far away and there was plenty there for us and the fans in attendance to hone in on. [gallery link="file" size="large" td_select_gallery_slide="slide" ids="159592,159593,159594,159595,159596,159597,159598,159599,159600,159601,159602,159603,159604"] Costumers from the ranks of the Rebel Legion, the UK Garrison, the Dark Empire, Droid Builders and the Saber Guild were at the show, giving lightsaber lessons to those enthusiastic fans signing up to learn the ways of the Force, pause for photographs on the Emperors throne and meet the heroes of the Alliance. It was busy, enthusiastic, energetic and most importantly a lot of fun, and that energy was very much apparent at the show. In things marked under 'stuff you don't see every day' shoutout to my brother in the Force and Making Tracks co-host Mark Mulcaster, who not only trooped as the 1995 Kenner Stormtrooper for a few hours but needed to be guided back to the changing rooms by Mara Jade. [gallery link="file" size="large" td_select_gallery_slide="slide" ids="159605,159606,159607,159608"] A walk around the show floor not only presented a plethora of costumes and fandoms but also saw droid after droid roll past thanks to the incredibly skilled hands of the Droid Builders. [gallery link="file" size="large" td_select_gallery_slide="slide" ids="159609,159610,159611,159612,159613,159614"] The Star Wars area was substantial and impressive (most impressive) and brought fans in of all ages, while a walk around the showfloor revealed Star Wars items on numerous stalls, from modern to vintage. Where else on a Saturday afternoon could you find an AST-5 next to a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and a WWE wrestler? [gallery link="file" size="large" td_select_gallery_slide="slide" ids="159615,159616,159617,159618"] Outside of the costume groups, families can often be found showcasing their fandom, and this Mandalorian clan was one of the very best. The show was huge fun, and while there we had the chance to chat with the new commanding officer of the UK Garrison Michael Cullen and the voice of Star Wars audiobooks, Marc Thompson on a special Megacon episode of Making Tracks. The day ended with an informal photoshoot around the Emperor throne, and the looks of satisfaction on everyone's faces tells the story of a job well done. There are plenty of conventions ahead of us this year, and on this form the groups and the fans are in for another banner year.
