London, San Marino, Toronto - October 2023
Just back from fabulous art viewing experiences abroad and in Toronto. Stopovers included: Frieze London, Frieze Masters and the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London as well as the Philip Guston exhibit at the Tate Modern; La Galleria Nazionale in the Republic of San Marino; and Art Toronto in Hogtown. The whole, for the most part, was enjoyed in the context of a three week stay in Italy where the hilltop medieval village of Petritoli, located in Le Marche, served as home base, and offered spectacular vistas of land, sea and mountains, all longstanding muses throughout history. Without looking too hard, traces of Ellsworth Kelly’s curves, Jasper Johns’ crosshatches and Frank Stella’s grids could all be seen in the roofscapes and landscapes, providing a breathtaking backdrop to daily activities, whether art related or other.
London
The transition from bucolic and sunny Petritoli to chaotic and rainy London was drastic but exhilarating. Frieze Week in mid-October is the global launching pad for the all-important fall season in the art world. With summer days in the rear-view mirror, an intense focus radiated from the London art scene with the convergence of exhibit openings, important contemporary and modern auctions, and preeminent art fairs. While the weightiness of a challenged economy and ongoing wars was perhaps most evident in the squishy auction results, elsewhere, the mood and excitement were upbeat as fair venues and exhibits were flooded by art fans and aficionados.
Frieze London and Frieze Masters art fairs ran concurrently under the stars, so to speak, in separate tents in the wonderful greenspace of Regent’s Park. Frieze London’s defining focus is on living artists and contemporary art. This year’s edition, the 20th, included over 160 participating galleries with a strong contingent of 40 or so international exhibitors. Noteworthy was the caliber of presenting galleries and works on display. While remaining very faithful to the contemporary focus, large well-established mega galleries were ever so present along with their roster of anointed stars, perhaps at the expense of the more experimental flair historically more synonymous with Frieze. A walking distance away through a maze of outdoor sculptures, Frieze Masters hosted over 130 galleries that showcased an eclectic mix of art works ranging from archaeological finds dating to thousands of years BC to 20th century masterpieces. Fair highlights included:  Tabboo!’s “Desert Moon”, 2021, acrylic on canvas (60 x 50 in.); Simone Leigh’s “Untitled”, 2022, stoneware, 25.75 x 11.75 x 16.5 in.); and Anna Mark’s “R 1002”, 1968, synthetic resin, sand, pigment on canvas, mounted on wooden frame (20 x 20.25 in.).
Elsewhere in the city at Somerset House, the 11th edition of 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair was in full swing with a line-up of over 60 galleries showcasing more than 170 artists. There, the excitement of discovery and seeing new things being done by emerging talents was palpable. Highlights included: Godwin Champs Namuyimba’s “Fathering spirit”, 2023, acrylic on canvas (90.5 x 78.75 in.); Emmie Nume’s “When we use to”, 2021, mixed media on paper (55.5 x 41.75 in.); and a pair of works by Theresa-Anne Mackintosh, “Walking with my body conscious” and “Comfortably dazed”, 2023, oil and acrylic on canvas (each, 34.25 x 39.5 in.).
Also in London, a captivating Philip Guston retrospective was being held at the Tate Modern. Spanning a 50-year career, the comprehensive survey included everything from the artist’s more classical early works to pieces depicting his fiery brand of abstraction and, most prominently, paintings and drawings featuring his iconic comic-like figures and imagery that captured the anxious and turbulent world around him. The whole made for an intense and sometimes unsettling experience. While the museum walls were bursting with large scale masterworks that chronicled the Guston story, it was a small self-portrait that was most memorable - “Untitled”, 1968, acrylic on board. Barely noticeable behind the artist’s gaze painted in the foreground were the remnants of an earlier work of a hooded figure. The effect hauntingly captured Guston’s lifelong nightmarish preoccupation with racism.
San Marino
The next art stop was an unplanned pleasant surprise that surfaced during a day trip to San Marino. Located on the northeastern side of the Apennine Mountains and surrounded by Italy, San Marino is the fifth smallest country in the world, and it boasts a historic center high up on Monte Titano at approximately 2500 feet above sea level that features three medieval towers dating back to the 11th century. There was almost a Vegas-like surrealness to the place with throngs of tourists making the pilgrimage to take in the spectacular views and medieval setting. Nestled in one of the few quiet corners of the historic city and a bit isolated from the many churches, palazzos and eateries was La Galleria Nazionale di San Marino, the country’s center of modern and contemporary art.Housed in the renovated Logge dei Volontari, the museum is dedicated to showcasing its collection of post war art which was amassed from international art biennials held in San Marino beginning in the mid-50s. It was totally surprising to come across fantastic works by lesser-known American artists, including: James Brown’s “Opera Contro Natura”, 2003, mixed media and collage on folded linen (59 x 98.75 in.); and David Row’s “B.N.I.”, 1992, oil on canvas (in three parts, overall, 66 x 85.75 in.).
Toronto
Returning back from the old world with only one viewing day left at Art Toronto, the opportunity was seized to cap off the art adventure with a visit to Canada’s premiere contemporary and modern art fair. While the corridors were filled with rumblings of challenging times, the viewing experience was fantastic. Over 100 galleries took to the floor of the Toronto Metro Convention Center and offered up works from over 1000 artists. As a bonus, the launching of Jack Bush’s catalogue raisonné drew out many of his works that were scattered throughout the fair, including two favorites: “Untitled”, 1962, gouache on paper (35.25 x 23 in.); and “Red, Orange, Green”, 1965, serigraph, edition 67 of 100 (25.5 x 20 in.). Other fair highlights included: Emma Kohlmann’s “Tulip”, 2023, oil on linen with cherry frame (14.25 x 12.25 x 1.25); Catherine Desroches’ “Déliason du corps contre le ciel”, 2023, bronze, pine, plywood, lost wax casting dust, foundry kiln ashes, graphite powder, charcoal on newsprint and on panel (84 x 49 in.); Marcel Barbeau’s “Iris”, 1962, acrylic on canvas (76.4 x 51.2 in.); and Jean-Paul Riopelle’s “Sans titre (1958.006P)”, 1958, oil on paper (25.5 x 19.75 in.).
Meanwhile, the sports scene in North America was frenetic with activity as all major sports leagues were in some state of play. In Dinoland, emotions were cautiously optimistic following a perfect pre-season and a home opener win. After that celebratory moment, however, reality set in for rookie Head Coach Darko Rajaković. Three losses later, the new system was being questioned, and all the ghosts of last year’s disappointing season were surfacing. A win against a star-laden Bucks team provided some glimmer of hope, but that too was soon quashed with a thumping courtesy of ex-Dino Head Honcho Nick Nurse and his 76ers. Can a Fredless team be so different? It’s got to be the system. It’s early, I know, but it doesn’t bode well. Up next, Wemby-mania in the Lone Star State. Ugh.

UK could help fund jail in Albania for offenders transferred from British prisons
UK could help fund jail in Albania for offenders transferred from British prisons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The UK could help finance the construction of a prison in Albania to house offenders sent back to the country from British jails.
Albanians make up the largest foreign national group in UK jails, with more than 1,500 behind bars in England and Wales making up around 10 per cent of total inmates from overseas.
British and Albanian justice ministers Chris Philp and Etilda Gjonaj last week approved a prisoner transfer agreement that will allow offenders from either side to be sent back to their home countries to serve out their full sentences.
But Ms Gjonaj revealed in an interview with the west Balkan country’s media that the discussions also touched on the possibility of financial assistance from London to house returned felons – many of them convicted of involvement with criminal gangs active in drug-smuggling and people trafficking.
With very few UK nationals in Albanian prisons, the transfer of offenders is likely to be largely one-way, and Tirana is understood to be concerned about the additional financial burden that the arrangement could create.
Ms Gjonaj told an interviewer that British ministers “welcomed my proposal for the UK to build a prison in Albania or renovate an existing prison”.

Discussions are understood to be at an early stage, and the Ministry of Justice declined to confirm or deny whether the proposal was raised in last week’s talks.
But an offer of financial help would not be unprecedented.
In 2015, David Cameron offered Jamaica around £25m from the UK’s aid budget to part-fund a prison for offenders returned from Britain, though the deal was eventually rejected by the administration in Kingston. Since then, discussions have taken place with Nigeria about funding for a jail in Lagos, though again the proposal came to nothing.
Under the terms of last week’s agreement, Albanian authorities will have to foot the bill for housing returned offenders in its own jails, saving the UK taxpayer an average £44,600 per inmate.
Mr Philp, said: “We are committed to removing foreign criminals who have abused our hospitality and inflicted misery on our communities.
“Someone who commits a serious crime in the UK should be barred from returning so that the taxpayer no longer has to pay for them and victims can be confident justice has been done.”
No legislation is required to put the agreement into effect, and ministers expect transfers under the scheme to begin in the autumn.
Since January 2019, the UK has removed 7,985 foreign national offenders from prisons, immigration removal centres and the community.
The deal with Albania builds on an earlier agreement and means that offenders must spend at least the same amount of time in custody as they were sentenced to by a judge in the UK.
It also clarifies that prisoners can be transferred without their consent.

The health of the hobby, 2020
For several years when I was a kid, my father and I would plant, nurture, and eventually harvest a big vegetable garden. It was something special he and I shared—my one older brother still living at home didn’t really take to it; my mother helped, but she focused mainly on her flower gardens. It was Dad and I who planned the vegetable garden, plotted its layout on graph paper late each winter or early in the spring, and did most of the work.
Now, umpteen years later, Dad still grows a garden each year. When we catch up by phone or in person, I get an update on how everything is doing—what’s growing well or poorly, what’s been affected by the weather, and what’s seeing a good yield.
How do you measure the grassroots health of a hobby? I’ve always felt that the number, depth, and quality of books, magazines, and other products that serve a hobby (like coin-collecting) make good measuring sticks. These are better gauges than just looking at auction records and top-end sale prices. It’s exciting that a 1938-S Mercury dime in MS-68 recently sold for $364,250—even non-collectors are intrigued by such an event. But that’s only one numismatic transaction out of tens of thousands that occur every day.
Walk into a Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million—the nation’s two largest bookstores—and you’ll see shelves full of hobby references and storage supplies. Those of us who collect coins, medals, tokens, paper money, and other numismatic treasures have a bumper crop to choose from these days.
The price of gold rises and falls, hot investments come and go, the United States Mint releases exciting new coins and medals that capture the popular imagination, market bubbles expand and pop. While all this is happening, the underlying health of the hobby—judging from the wealth of related “stuff” that helps collectors assemble, display, and enjoy their collections—is quite strong.
Research materials at the May 2019 Cherrypickers’ Guide editorial summit in Chattanooga.
In the coming months you’ll continue to see a diverse library of books from Whitman Publishing in your local bookstores and hobby shops, and online. Charles Morgan and Hubert Walker have ranked the 100 Greatest Modern World Coins in a fascinating new study. Bill Bierly’s In God We Trust goes in-depth in a numismatic and historical exploration of the national motto. The year’s new Red Book, Blue Book, and Mega Red will be on bookshelves before you know it. A bit later in the year, we’ll have the latest volume of the Cherrypickers’ Guide, a new edition of Roger W. Burdette’s Guide Book of Peace Dollars, and many other exciting books. Rumor has it the definitive autobiography of Q. David Bowers is in the offing! Postcard collectors will have a colorful new large-sized reference to enjoy. We’re working on new books in the world-coin arena, and also paper money, exonumia, and American colonials.
That’s not to mention what’s planned and in the works for 2021, 2022, and beyond.
Albums and folders continue to be popular, from the classic blue Whitman folder to handsome leatherette albums. Coin maps, tubes, 2×2-inch holders, and other supplies offer many options for the enthusiast. What do you collect? Browse Whitman’s coin supplies, currency supplies, and stamp supplies, and you’ll find some excellent ways to showcase your collections.
Numismatics is alive and well. Keep an eye open and an ear to the ground as the hobby continues to grow and change. We’ll get the word out as new books and products become ready for you.

As reported by Fox 8 Cleveland, the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission estimates All-Star Week will generate $65 million in revenue for Cleveland businesses, which includes packed restaurants, sports bars, hotels, and visitors checking out other attractions like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  MLB's Play Ball Park drew big crowds to the Huntington Convention Center over the weekend. Restaurants are bringing in extra staff, which will also benefit workers who will earn extra tips this week. 2,000 media members are in town giving Cleveland worldwide attention. The huge amount of money being spent in Cleveland, also means the city cashes in with extra tax money which can be used for city improvements, like roads, public transport, and community service programs. Stores like the Cleveland Clothing Company on Euclid Avenue are packed more than usual. "It's been great for the community and the city," manager Desiree Moar told Fox8. Cleveland will once again be in the national spotlight when the city hosts the NFL Draft in 2021, and the NBA All Star Game in 2022.
BofA launches ASG-tied rewards program. As noted by Cynopsis, ahead of the MLB All-Star Game in Cleveland, longtime MLB sponsor Bank of America launched a rewards program tied to ASG festivities. Looking to leverage the drama of extra innings, the “Extra Rewards” promotion offers BofA customers discounts on licensed merchandise at MLB.com, along with some exclusive merchandise. TV ads will support the program, primarily on MLB asset media and in markets where BofA has RSN inventory on local MLB telecasts. Tags supporting the promo will also be read as extra-inning games occur, along with digital and social media. BofA CMO Meredith Verdone said the promotion is designed to enhance customer relevancy and engagement. “The thing we love about the association with extra innings is that there’s always an exciting, emotional ending,” she added. This All-Star Game is especially key to BofA, since it is just entering the Ohio market with retail banking. BofA, an MLB sponsor since 2004, also has deals with the Astros, Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants, Orioles, Red Sox, and Yankees.
The U.S. women's national team beat the Netherlands on Sunday to defend their title as reigning World Cup champions. When they get back home, they've got a different battle awaiting – their legal fight for equal pay and treatment. In March, the 28 members of the 2015 World Cup-winning team -- including current national team stars Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Carli Lloyd -- filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation alleging gender discrimination in their treatment versus how the governing body treats the men's team. "The U.S. women’s soccer team does not need to be the best in the world in order to earn equal pay. The point of non-discrimination law is that employees doing similar work should be paid equally," Columbia Law School’s Suzanne B. Goldberg told ABC News. The lawsuit also cites the denial of "at least equal playing, training, and travel conditions; and equal promotion of their games." Added Goldberg, “In this instance, where the women's team is outplaying the men's team, there is an argument that they should be paid more than their male counterparts," she said. A U.S. Soccer spokesperson confirmed that the women's team and the federation tentatively agreed to mediation after the World Cup
USWNT jersey sales have outpaced all other U.S. soccer jerseys, including those of the men's team, according to statistics from Nike and Fanatics. As reported by ESPN, Nike said in its earnings report that the women's 2019 stadium home jersey is now the No. 1-selling soccer jersey, men's or women's, ever sold on Nike.com in one season. Fanatics said this is the top-selling U.S. Soccer national team, men's or women's, of all time. "It's hard to overstate how important this year has been to the evolution of the women's offense at Nike," president and CEO Mark Parker said. The USWNT’s success has helped drive business for Nike even past the jersey, which retails for $90. Parker said the energy around the World Cup, with nearly two-thirds of the teams wearing Nike kits and half the players wearing Nike boots, has pushed the company to the No. 1 position in market share for bras this quarter in North America for the first time in the company's history. That stat is impressive given the exposure Nike gained in 1999, when Brandi Chastain scored the winning goal against China in a shootout and tore off her jersey, revealing her sports bra – one of the most iconic moments in women's sports history.
While it’s long been green, this year Wimbledon is seriously ramping up its sustainability initiatives. Week Two of Wimbledon is underway at the All England Club, and one sight that hasn’t been seen at this year's tournament is "players discarding the plastic cover from a freshly strung racket." As the Guardian noted, following a sustainability review, the "removal of plastic bags from the player racket stringing operation means there will be 4,500 fewer plastic bags used" this year. Wimbledon sponsor Evian also launched “its first 100% recycled and 100% recyclable water bottle at this year’s championships." Meanwhile, longtime sponsor Rolex ran a full-page ad in the New York Times touting its standing as the official jeweler of Wimbledon: "140 Years of Memorable Performances Ensure Centre Court Will Remain Tennis's Ultimate Stage." And timeless tennis superstar Roger Federer has been reveling in a different kind of green: Federer topped Forbes’ list of 2018 athlete endorsement income, at $65 million besting LeBron James ($52 million), Cristiano Ronaldo ($47 million), Tiger Woods, and Steph Curry (tied at $42 million)
IMG is close to signing a ten-year deal worth $1 billion for betting streaming and data rights to the ATP Tour. According to SportBusiness, the partnership being discussed between global agency IMG and ATP Media – the tour’s commercial arm – will reportedly cover the nine ATP Masters 100 tournaments, the Tour 500 series, and a number of the 250 series events. If successful, the deal would add to the agency's growing portfolio of contracts for IMG Arena, its sports betting and content arm. The division, launched in November, 2018, is already a data partner for golf’s PGA Tour and European Tour, and looking at capitalizing on new U.S. sports wagering laws. IMG's involvement in tennis is already significant. The agency has representatives on the ATP board, reps elite players including Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka, and owns and operates ATP tournaments including the Miami Open and Rio Open. If confirmed, this will be the biggest rights deal in tennis history.
Major League Soccer will host a new MLS All-Star Skills Challenge presented by Target at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports on July 30. Points in each of the competitive skills will be earned based on accuracy, as well as style and include: touch and volley; shooting; and passing. The 2019 MLS All-Star Game Presented by Target will take place in Orlando on Wednesday, July 31 at Orlando City Stadium, which holds close to 26,000 fans. The festivities join the city’s rich tradition of hosting mega events, including two annual college football bowl games, PGA Tour tourneys, and the annual Pop Warner Super Bowl and cheer national championships.
Universal Tennis releases an app to makes tennis more available to the masses. According to PR Newswire, the UTR app helps to connect the tennis community as it helps to rank the skill level of players across the globe. At the core of the Universal Tennis platform is the Universal Tennis Rating, the global gold standard for measuring tennis skill across age, gender, and geography. UTR and the Universal Tennis platform have been adopted by players, coaches, organizers, academies, clubs, and colleges worldwide to facilitate more connectivity and better competition across the tennis landscape. Marvel joins the esports world thanks to superheroes. According to Forbes, Team Liquid has announced a new partnership with Marvel that will see its players wear Avengers-inspired jerseys at certain special events. The year-long contract includes inspired jerseys from Captain America, Iron Man, Avengers Endgame, and a collaborative T-shirt between the two parties. The first look at the new gear was in the team’s Captain America jerseys at the EU vs NA Rift Rivals League of Legends competition taking place in Los Angeles last weekend. As Avengers Endgame nearly overtook Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time, Marvel is now expanding its influence into the world of gaming and further building its empire while Team Liquid will garner a new slew of fans.
The MLB All Star Game auctions off Louisville Slugger and Fender guitars for charity. This year’s All-Star game is taking place in Cleveland, Ohio, and will pay tribute to the home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. According to Yahoo! Finance, the location of the All-Star Week makes for an ideal partnership between two manufacturers that are world leaders in their respective areas: Louisville Slugger baseball bats and Fender musical instruments. To celebrate the rock n’ roll history of the city, MLB partnered with the two companies to create a public exhibit featuring 31 pairs of artist-painted Fender Stratocasters and Louisville Slugger baseball bats, one for each MLB team and one for the Baseball Hall of Fame. These bats and guitars will be displayed through July 9 at Cleveland Public Square’s Midsummer Village and will later be auctioned off for charity, with funds raised by MLB Charities to be used for instrument purchases and music program learning resources.

The Cliche List of Winners and Losers of the NBA Trade Deadline
The trade deadline came and went with Woj bombs and blockbusters left to decipher. With some time now to process it all a little, here are some teams/players who I felt benefited or did not do well at the deadline.
Winners:
The Boston Celtics:
While the Celtics did not upgrade their roster, they certainly won the deadline solely because they get their shot at Anthony Davis. Apparently Danny Ainge convinced Dell Demps enough to not only go full Emperor Palpatine and destroy and deceive the rival Lakers from the inside, but hold off on making a deal before the deadline and go into the summer with the premier players and assets available for New Orleans’ taking. We’ll see if it actually happens, but for now the Celtics have to be in pole position to land the biggest fish out there. (though the Lakers did exact their revenge last night, at least. RONDOOOOO)
The Eastern Conference Playoffs:
The Celtics didn’t upgrade their roster this season, but man did everyone else did. The 76ers, Bucks and Raptors, however, all took turns making mega deals trying to outgun each other in a wide open Eastern Conference sans LeBron James, sort of like trying to win an auction.
Let’s start with Philadelphia. The Sixers were a team bereft of perimeter shooting and were able to land that and then some in the form of Tobias Harris. The versatility is boundless. Many have touted Tobias as the type of guy who needs the ball in his hands to be successful, but I don’t quite see it that way. He can play off ball as well; he’s a selfless, secondary option who can stretch the floor (he’s shot 40% from 3 each of the last 2 seasons and is close to averaging 50-40-90 shooting splits this season) while also threatening enough as a playmaker to create when given the opportunity to do so. Harris can play very well off all 4 of Ben Simmons, Jimmy Butler, JJ Redick and Joel Embiid by giving them all more room to operate and stress the decision making of coaches and players on how to cover the 2 or 3 of them when directly involved in a pick and roll or halfcourt set. Harris shot 40.8 on catch-and-shoot 3s on 3.4 attempts per game, while boasting a robust 56.6 EFG% from inside 10 feet  and 51.8 EFG% on pull-up jumpers. Perhaps they gave up too much (2 first and 2 second round picks, including that precious Heat 2021 1st round pick), but trading for Harris (and Butler) now provides Philly the opportunity to re-sign their whole starting lineup this summer. Harris ranks 12th in ESPN’s RPM metric, in part because his proficiency on both ends of the floor and being able to guard multiple positions. He will help bring the best out of everybody on the floor by being able to space it. Good deal for Elton Brand. (Also, for a team that needs depth anywhere they can find it, James Ennis III, Mike Scott, Boban Marjanovic (BOBAN!), Jonathon Simmons and whoever they can find in the buyout market can make nice contributions in their own right).
As for the Bucks, Nikola Mirotic provides the Bucks with even more firepower than what they already had: shooting. However, Mirotic also will give Milwaukee all the more versatility and another scoring punch in the halfcourt. I wonder if people will overstate Harris’ impact while understating Mirotic’s; Harris is a better and more complete individual player, but as a team’s 4th or (at times) 5th option, is there much of a difference between Tobias and Mirotic? I’d rather have Tobias to be sure, but he and Mirotic’s per 36 numbers, per Basketball-Reference, are not all that dissimilar. Mirotic fits perfectly inside Milwaukee’s offense spreading the floor for Giannis and has playoff experience, most notably last season as he helped New Orleans blow torch the Portland Trail Blazers in 4 games before losing to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. Milwaukee upgraded, and gave up considerably less in the process. Props to GM Jon Horst, who should be in the running for Executive of the Year.
Now let’s get to Toronto. This is much more interesting and think will take more time acclimating after acquiring Marc Gasol from Memphis for Delon Wright, Jonas Valanciunas, CJ Miles and a 2nd round pick in 2022. With Jonas Valanciunas injured, Toronto resorted to Greg Monroe holding down bench units at the center spot, which went poorly. While Marc’s shooting and scoring numbers have gone down relative to his peak years in Memphis, he is averaging a career high 4.7 assists per game. Only Kyle Lowry averages more assists per game for the Raptors than Marc does this season. Marc Gasol should bring a totally new element at the elbow to ease some pressure off of Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry. The tricky part will be how to sort the minutes in the frontcourt. Serge Ibaka and should have been All Star Pascal Siakam have been fantastic as a duo. Who of Ibaka, Siakam and Gasol will come off the bench? My guess would be Serge Ibaka to fully maximize Siakam’s athleticism cutting for Marc to find him, as Gasol is a much more prudent passer than Ibaka is, and use Serge’s scoring and shooting growth this season to help anchor 2nd units. Toronto needed a big body to bang with some of the bigger brutes in the Eastern Conference and another playmaker. They got both in Gasol. Let’s see how they utilize him and how he affects their rotations as a result.
Orlando Magic:
Hey, the Magic finally won something! Jokes aside, what they finally did accomplish, though, is acquire a potential franchise changing player. Or might be out of the league in two seasons. That’s kind of where we are with Markelle Fultz. I personally believe an injury was the root of his yips and shook-ness shooting the basketball, but regardless, a mental block got the best of him. To paraphrase Prodigy, Markelle ‘was only 19 but (his) mind was (not??) older’ last season, and even stumbled into this season. However, there is a reason why he was taken number one and Philadelphia traded an extra 1st round pick to move from three to one to draft. He is the ultimate guard for today’s NBA. He is worth the gamble of a future 1st round pick via Oklahoma City that is going to be in the 20s. Maybe it was his thoracic outlet syndrome. Maybe the pressure of being the 1st pick got to him as Philly was marching towards playoff contention. Whatever the case, the noise will silence as he disappears in Orlando, and I mean that in the best possible way. Orlando has a seismic hole at the point guard position and he can fill without needing to live up to the pressure and scrutiny of being a number one pick in a big market. If he can find his shot again to match his athleticism and defensive prowess, Orlando got a franchise changer for basically nothing. If not, they just lose an extra 1st round pick and Jonathon Simmons. They even kept Terrence Ross and Nikola Vucevic, who you could’ve argued they should have traded but could help Markelle transition nicely as proven pieces worthy of defenses’ attention. He fits the timeline of Aaron Gordon, Wes Iwundu, Jonathan Isaac and Mo Bamba. Who knows if it will work with Markelle. I sure as hell don’t. But I do know it *could,* & I applaud Orlando for trying.
LA Clippers:
The Clippers somehow managed to get worse, then get better (a little), all while setting up their future perfectly. With the salary cap projected to be at around $109 million, the Clippers have positioned themself to acquire a superstar in just about any form. Sure, they lost Tobias Harris, but he isn’t of the caliber of the Kawhi Leonards or Kevin Durants they plan to be star-hunting for in free agency. But now they have draft capital as well as young players in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Landry Shamet and Jerome Robinson to throw at teams housing disgruntled superstars. They even shed Avery Bradley’s $2 million guaranteed and get an upgrade on this year’s roster in the form of JaMychal Green and Garrett Temple. They then flipped Mike Muscala from the aforementioned Tobias Harris trade into Ivica Zubac, a young, burgeoning center from the Lakers who has a teensy tiny $1.9 million cap hold to essentially replace Bradley’s guaranteed money. The Clippers can then go over the salary cap to re-sign Zubac if they’re able to fill the rest of the cap with superstar players. The Clippers have navigated perfectly post-Lob City. They can make a lot of noise this summer, perhaps not great noise for their hometown neighbors….
Losers:
Los Angeles Lakers:
Maybe it seemed unrealistic to expect them to nab Anthony Davis, but their best shot at getting him just slipped through their finger tips while it seemed that Dell Demps tried to cause an internal mutiny bleeping with the team and their internal chemistry. Hate to see it. That’s one reason why they’re on this list. The other dates back to this summer. The Lakers neglected shooting in free agency after signing LeBron James, who is maximized with shooting surrounding him on the floor a la Milwaukee with Giannis. Acquiring Reggie Bullock and Mike Muscala were good acquisitions as both are on expiring deals and bring some shooting they sorely lack without giving up major players or future assets. But the point is that acquiring shooting should’ve been done in the first place this summer, and likely could’ve been done without giving up Ivica Zubac in the first place. The Lakers did well in a vacuum this deadline, but their best shot at Davis passed without him.
Anthony Davis:
Speaking of Davis, he is now stuck in New Orleans after the Pelicans brass didn’t acquiesce to his trade demand, as he’ll have to pretend he didn’t want out like George Costanza. Since New Orleans can’t sit an All-NBA player or be at risk of a $100,000 fine per game Davis sits, the Pelicans are stuck in an awkward dance of trying to tank while finding the right amount of time to play a top 5 NBA player without compromising that. On top of that, as mentioned already, Davis’ best shot at landing in his preferred Lakers destination didn’t result in that happening. This feels like its only going to get worse before it gets better, so have fun Dell Demps.
Memphis Grizzlies:
RIP Grit ‘n’ Grind. The era gave Memphis the best run of NBA ball it has ever seen, but unfortunately, not to much to show from it afterwards. They traded Marc Gasol for Delon Wright, Travis Kelce’s doppelganger Jonas Valanciunas, CJ Miles and a 2nd round pick. They essentially got nothing back for JaMychal Green and Garrett Temple. They dumped 2 2nd round picks for Justin Holiday to try and make a push towards playoff contention, but the hopes of that quickly ran out. Chandler Parsons’ corpse of a contract is still on the books. And, most importantly, they couldn’t find a trade for Mike Conley, which could impact their chances of tanking for Zion or even keeping their pick in the first place. Delon Wright is a nice piece, but he is going to be a restricted free agent and will turn 27 (I was stunned too. 27 already?!?) in April. Valanciunas will be 27 in May. That doesn’t exactly sound like players along the timeline of franchise centerpiece Jaren Jackson Jr, though they will help. They should’ve gotten more for a franchise great in Marc Gasol, even if he had a foot out the door already. Conley should be more movable this summer. Memphis only began blowing it up. But for now, they seem rather aimless.
The Western Conference Playoffs minus the Golden State Warriors:
No one in the West drastically improved their team, though the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings made incremental improvements. Not everyone has an infinity gauntlet like the Warriors do, so I don’t blame them.

IPL 2022 : Punjab Kings Announces their Captain
Kings XI Punjab or known as Punjab Kings has been an instrumental part of Indian Premier League. Punjab was decent in the first few seasons. Punjab made it to the playoffs under Yuvraj Singh in the first season.
Punjab's best season came in 2014 under George Bailey where Glen Maxwell and David Miller single handedly took them into IPL finals. Unfortunately for them they lost the finals to KKR that year.  Since then, Punjab has been on a downfall. They kept finishing in the bottom half of the table. In 2018 Mega Auction Punjab went all clean, they retained only 2 players for the auction. They build a decent team for themselves. They got Ashwin and Kl Rahul, 2 big stars of Indian cricket.
But again, lucky was not the Punjab side, they performed badly that season and eventually captain Ashwin had fallen out with management and he was traded to the Delhi team. KL Rahul was made captain then, under Rahul Punjab performed in bits and pieces. Sometimes they played exceptionally well while sometimes they played terribly.
Now again for IPL 2022 mega auction followed the strategy of 2018 and went all clean only retaining 2 players. Their Captain Kl Rahul left them on some payment issue and Punjab retained Mayank Agarwal his deputy and Arsdeep Singh young left arm pacer. On the auction table Punjab performed brilliantly, they have got a good all-round squad.
https://youtu.be/ren8yVO6s1g
Now with Squad and all set, Punjab Kings needed a captain and they had a lot of options after getting their full squad. Top candidates were Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal and English International Jonny Bairstow.
Now with all the speculation, Punjab Kings decided to announce their captain and now Punjab Kings have announced Mayank Agarwal as their captain for IPL 2022 season.
