The Big Ten on Thursday announced it will go to a conference-only season for all fall sports, including football, amid “unprecedented times” during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are facing uncertain and unprecedented times, and the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, game officials, and others associated with our sports programs and campuses remain our number one priority,” the Big Ten said in a statement.

“… By limiting competition to other Big Ten institutions, the Conference will have the greatest flexibility to adjust its own operations throughout the season and make quick decisions in real-time based on the most current evolving medical advice and the fluid nature of the pandemic.”

The Big Ten is the first of the Power 5 conferences to make this type of a major change to its fall sports. The SEC on Thursday said it continues to meet with campus leaders “to determine the best path forward” for fall sports, and Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said in a statement that he has been advised to “move ahead slowly” and plan “for all available scenarios.” Meanwhile, the ACC has already said it would delay all fall sports until at least Sept. 1.

SEC league officials and athletic directors are scheduled to meet early next week but have no plans to make any decisions on the fall schedule.

“We will talk concepts, just like we have since the beginning, and those concepts have to be more serious given the shifting landscape,” an SEC AD told ESPN. “But everything remains fluid, and no one believes right now that we have to [shorten the season to just league games] like the Big Ten did.”

The Ivy League on Wednesday ruled out playing all sports this fall.

If college football can be played this fall, Big Ten presidents and athletic directors preferred the conference-only model, which will eliminate some long-distance travel and help ensure teams are being tested for the coronavirus universally, multiple sources inside the league and around college football told ESPN.

Other sports affected include men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball.

The new conference-only schedules for all fall sports will be released at a later date, the Big Ten said. The conference also said it would continue to evaluate other sports.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said he would be in favor of playing 10 conference football games.

“I’m hopeful that’s where we end up next week in locking that down,” Smith said Thursday. “We’ve talked about that, and that’s our preference.”

Smith said if they’re able to play in September, but something happens later in the month or in October, “we can hit the pause button and provide a window of opportunity for our student-athletes not to be put at risk.

“We can move games,” Smith said. “… There’s a flexibility — I can’t say that enough. That’s significant.”

Heather Dinich details the Big Ten’s goals for this season, including playing 10 conference games with the division games frontloaded.

Big Ten presidents and ADs discussed the issues during a conference call earlier this week, and the league’s head coaches were given an opportunity to weigh in on Thursday morning.

The statement said the league will continue to follow “the best advice of medical experts,” but acknowledged “we are also prepared not to play … should circumstances so dictate” — something that Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren also said later Thursday.

“This is not a fait accompli that we’re going to have sports in the fall,” Warren told Big Ten Network. “We may not have sports in the fall. We may not have a college football season in the Big Ten.

“We just wanted to make sure this was the next logical step to try and rely on our medical experts to keep our student athletes at the center of all of our decisions and make sure they are as healthy as they can possibly be from a mental, physical and emotional wellness standpoint.”

Smith shares that concern about a fall season taking place.

“I’m really concerned. … I’m very concerned,” Smith said. “In our last conversation, whenever that was, I was cautiously optimistic. I’m not even there now, when you look at the behavior of our country and you consider that in May we were on a downward trajectory with our [coronavirus] cases. … Now, we’re — if not the worst in the world — one of the worst in the world.

“I am concerned that we may not be able to play. Which is why we took the measure we took — in order to try and have September available to us for conference games and give us the flexibility and control to handle disruptions if we’re able to start a season. I’m concerned about where we are, just across the board, relative to the management of the pandemic as individuals.”

The conference also said it was working with the Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee to finalize protocols for the upcoming fall seasons.

“This is really where the work begins — to make sure we get testing protocols finalized, to make sure we get all medical and operational procedures finalized,” Warren told Big Ten Network.

The Big Ten said all student-athletes choosing not to participate in sports during the 2020-21 academic year because of concerns about COVID-19 “will continue to have their scholarship honored by their institution and will remain in good standing with their team.”

Some Big Ten schools preferred playing only conference foes in football with one additional nonleague game — thus preserving some of the marquee non-Big Ten matchups — but there was overwhelming support for a 10-game conference-only schedule, the sources said.

An assistant coach at a Big Ten program told ESPN that his head coach instructed him to stop scouting and otherwise preparing for nonconference opponents and focus only on Big Ten foes.

The Big Ten’s decision to play only conference opponents affects 36 scheduled football opponents, 28 from the FBS and eight from the FCS. Six FBS schools — Ball State, Bowling Green, BYU, Central Michigan, UConn and Northern Illinois — were scheduled to play two Big Ten opponents this season.

Bowling Green athletic director Bob Moosbrugger said the Big Ten’s decision is just “the tip of the iceberg.”

“We understand that difficult decisions need to be made,” Moosbrugger said. “… If we are to solve these challenges and be truly dedicated to protecting the health and safety of our student-athletes, we need to do a better job of working together.”

The marquee nonconference matchups lost to the Big Ten decision include Michigan‘s road game at Washington on Sept. 5, Ohio State‘s trip to Oregon on Sept. 12, Michigan State‘s home game against Miami on Sept. 26 and Wisconsin‘s contest against Notre Dame at Lambeau Field on Oct. 3.

Smith said more decisions regarding the specifics of the football schedule — how many games are played, if the schedule needs to be front-loaded with division games, and how a champion might be determined — are expected next week.

Trump Won Pennsylvania. Democrats Want the State (and His Voters) Back.

CONWAY, Pa. — The rules are workable enough in the right hands, in the right corner of a right-leaning region of a state like this one.

Avoid the jacket-and-tie look, so voters — wary enough of Democrats — do not think they are looking at a Jehovah’s Witness. “That happened,” recalled Representative Conor Lamb, now in a polo shirt.

Pivot to safe subjects. After a local here loudly mocked the idea of “Russian collusion” with President Trump to a peer, Mr. Lamb, 34, moved in to introduce himself, telling the man (who said he was Russian) about falling in love with Russian cuisine when he was in the Marines.

And if all else fails — and it will, often — there is always prayer.

“I was reading a little Isaiah this morning,” Mr. Lamb said at a town festival recently, approaching Paul Strano, 69, whose hat read, “F.B.I.: Firm Believer In Jesus.” The two bowed their heads.

“A man of faith, backing the party of abortion, homosexual promotion,” Mr. Strano, a Trump supporter, said afterward. “But the man sold himself.” Mr. Lamb had his vote.

In his 2016 victory, Mr. Trump swiped several states that Democrats had assumed were theirs: Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida. But perhaps no outcome matched the psychic toll of losing Pennsylvania, where the past Democratic coalition of city-dwelling liberals, racial minorities and white working-class voters in union towns had long defined the party’s identity as a big-tent enterprise.

Two years later, a return to power — winning the House in November, winning the presidency in 2020 — will hinge in large measure on how effectively Democrats can peel off voters who migrated to Mr. Trump. The challenge is real: Unemployment in the state is below 5 percent, and Mr. Trump’s approval rating, while underwater over all in Pennsylvania, remains high among the Republicans who populate districts like Mr. Lamb’s. But in candidates like him and others across the state, national Democratic officials believe they have found a model, with a curious signature feature: Democrats in no rush to remind certain audiences that they are Democrats.

Best known for his special election victory in March in a district that the president carried by nearly 20 points, Mr. Lamb has sought to reach both college-educated suburbanites dismayed at Mr. Trump’s excesses and union workers who defected to Republicans in 2016, when the president won the state by less than a percentage point.

The balance is delicate. Mr. Lamb speaks of labor rights and economic fairness, in the Democratic tradition, but stakes out more conservative ground on social issues like guns. He begs off questions about national politics, but makes clear that he wants to see Nancy Pelosi replaced as the leader of House Democrats. He observes that “heroin kills both Democrats and Republicans,” the only mention of the D-word on his campaign website’s home page.

He claims to have few strong feelings about Mr. Trump’s job performance.

“I’m not real concerned about it,” Mr. Lamb said in an interview. (After the chat was over, he wanted another pass at the topic. “It’s not that I’m not concerned about job performance,” he clarified. “It’s that I don’t think it’s my role to be a speculator or analyst.”)

Other Democrats in Trump-supporting areas have tested their own modulated message. In northeastern Pennsylvania, Representative Matt Cartwright, whose district Mr. Trump won by 10 points, is quick to recall Democratic triumphs of generations past, like Franklin D. Roosevelt signing Social Security into law. Like Mr. Lamb, he emphasizes the need to secure affordable health coverage and tend to moldering roads and bridges. Unlike Mr. Lamb, he won his office by initially challenging a conservative incumbent Democrat from the left in a 2012 primary, declaring himself a member of “the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party.”

But direct criticisms of the president have been relatively sparse. Though Mr. Cartwright, 57, said in an interview that he wished Mr. Trump would “act more presidential,” he reached for empathy when explaining his own constituents’ choices in 2016.

“They voted for the change candidate, and you do that when you are hurting,” he said. “And I try to remind them that it is the Democratic Party that cares about the people who are hurting more than any other party. And I say to myself, I have to redouble my own efforts because these are my people who are hurting.”

Across the state, candidates have been similarly introspective. Perpetually a bellwether — with bipartisan representation in the United States Senate currently and seesawing control of the governorship for decades — Pennsylvania has assumed an especially prominent place in the present political moment. Not only are Gov. Tom Wolf and Senator Bob Casey, both Democrats, fighting to keep their seats this November, but congressional districts have been rendered more competitive under a redrawn map, making the state central to any Democratic path back to a House majority in Washington.

Mr. Wolf, a businessman from south central Pennsylvania, will face Scott Wagner, who owns a waste-hauling company and served in the State Senate. Mr. Casey — long an understated senator, now emitting more fire in the Trump age — is running against Representative Lou Barletta, an immigration hard-liner and early Trump supporter. Polls have shown both Democrats with double-digit leads, buoyed in part by deep antipathy toward Mr. Trump in urban areas — enough to make Mr. Casey entirely comfortable opposing Mr. Trump’s recent Supreme Court pick before his identity (Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh) was even revealed.

And under the redrawn map, several Democratic women are running in congressional districts that are either leaning in their favor or are solidly blue, including Madeleine Dean, Chrissy Houlahan and Mary Gay Scanlon in suburban Philadelphia, and Susan Wild in the Lehigh Valley. Democrats see at least a half-dozen potential pickup opportunities in the state this fall, when they will need to flip 23 seats nationwide to take back the House.

This jumbling of the boundary lines has also coincided with a wider upheaval in the state — demographically, economically, socially. Democrats have clustered ever more tightly in major cities. Pittsburgh, so synonymous with steel that the word lives in the name of its football team, has transformed into a haven of “eds and meds,” with greener medical complexes, a Google campus and a test track for autonomous cars.

A surge of immigrants has spawned resurgence and resentment in equal measure in some long-flagging labor towns, where blue-collar white voters have often felt left behind, their grievances reflected back in the racially-hued message and zero-sum populism of Mr. Trump.

“Two things can be true at the same time: There is xenophobia and nationalism and racist undertones,” said John Fetterman, the longtime mayor of Braddock, outside Pittsburgh, and the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor. “But there’s also people that are reachable.”

Often, success is as much a matter of emphasis as policy. Rick Bloomingdale, the president of the Pennsylvania A.F.L.-C.I.O., said that despite a “great economic plan” from Hillary Clinton in 2016, the piece of her platform that broke through most was “how awful Trump was.”

“People don’t want to hear you tell them how bad Trump is,” Mr. Bloomingdale said. “They either know or they don’t care.”

Though Democrats hope to erase the memory of Mrs. Clinton’s race statewide, regions like Mr. Lamb’s and Mr. Cartwright’s have been a particular focus of the political reclamation project. The party once ruled many of the labor strongholds of the southwest, where the river’s edge is pocked with brownfields and shuttered taverns and roadside sunflowers that tilt backward, like a boxer dodging a punch, when a truck cuts a curve too sharply.

And northeastern Pennsylvania has long carried particular significance for Democrats as a point of electoral pride in an increasingly cosmopolitan party. Mrs. Clinton’s father came from there, as she liked to tell her Pennsylvania crowds. She learned to shoot a gun, she said, at her family’s cottage on nearby Lake Winola. Mr. Casey is another Scranton man, like his father — a two-term Democratic governor — before him. So is former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., from whom Mr. Lamb said he learned a crucial lesson about grip-and-grin hustle at parades.

“I watched him do it once,” Mr. Lamb said. “He had to change his shirt afterward. That was the metric of success.”

So perhaps nowhere was Mr. Trump’s success more striking than across the northeastern ZIP codes where Democrats had long held firm. In Luzerne County, which includes Wilkes-Barre, President Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney in 2012 by five points; Mr. Trump won it by 19. In neighboring Lackawanna County, which includes Scranton, Mr. Obama won by 27 points; Mrs. Clinton beat Mr. Trump there by only three.

Mr. Cartwright’s Republican opponent in the area is John Chrin, a former investment banker who has pumped more than $1.3 million into his campaign. Mr. Cartwright is seen as the favorite, but he is one of a small number of incumbent House Democrats nationwide whose races are viewed as competitive. A recent ad from Mr. Chrin’s campaign accuses Mr. Cartwright of supporting so-called sanctuary cities and “protecting criminals,” while also voting in lock step with Ms. Pelosi.

But the congressman has strained to avoid such typecasting as a liberal shill. Among other flourishes, he has been eager to share word of a new hobby with prospective voters: deer hunting.

“My job is to get to know people and learn about their passions,” he said in the interview.

There is another upside. “It helps me talk to Republican members of Congress, too,” Mr. Cartwright said. “It’s a nice way to say, ‘You know, I don’t hate you.’”

Some skeptical voters have commanded extra care from Mr. Cartwright and his team. Outside the bingo tent at a church bazaar in Tannersville, Mr. Cartwright encountered Duane Grady, a Trump voter who owns a home heating oil business and expressed fondness of the Republican tax cuts. He said he used to support Democrats.

“You heard it from Uncle Matt: We want you back, man,” Mr. Cartwright told him.

Soon after, a Cartwright campaign worker offered his own pitch to Mr. Grady. The congressman, he noted, does not support “open borders” or abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an idea that some liberal Democrats have embraced. (Last month, both Mr. Lamb and Mr. Cartwright voted for a symbolic resolution supporting I.C.E.)

“Don’t let that far left-wing fringe, like antifa and stuff like that, make you think that they control the entire party,” the worker said. “Don’t think that we all belong to that side.”

Mr. Grady, it turned out, lived outside of Mr. Cartwright’s district, but he is the sort of voter Democrats need just the same. And he remained ambivalent. “I’d love to go back,” he said of voting Democratic. “But they got to get a whole new wave in there.”

Mr. Lamb’s campaign has likewise required a hard sell at times. At a neighborhood parade in Bairdford — where a State Senate candidate passed out Steelers schedules with his face on the top — Mr. Lamb drew a mixed reception.

“Gripping and grinning,” a man grumbled from his folding chair as Mr. Lamb passed.

A baby began to cry. “I get that reaction from a lot of people,” Mr. Lamb said.

But Mr. Lamb, prone to sports metaphors and coaching wisdom, does not discourage easily. He recalled a quote attributed to Bill Russell, the basketball legend: “Hustle is a talent.” And often, voters seemed to remember him from the ubiquitous advertisements during his special election. This has made him at least as recognizable as his Republican opponent, Keith Rothfus, a three-term incumbent whose new district lines are far less favorable. (A recent poll showed Mr. Lamb with a solid lead.)

Some fellow Democratic candidates, eager to emulate Mr. Lamb’s performance in conservative-leaning districts, have reached out in recent months for advice. There is little to give, Mr. Lamb suggested.

“There really is no playbook or master plan or strategy,” he said.

But Mr. Lamb has pursued a hobby of his own, as needed.

When two seniors began dancing beside an inflatable bounce-house at the festival in Conway, Mr. Lamb joined them — all limbs and peer pressure — twisting and kicking to the beat.

“Are you allowed to just do whatever you want with your hands?” he asked, mid-shuffle.

Yes, he was told. There was no playbook or master plan or strategy.

Geography

Wisconsin is bordered by the Montreal River; Lake Superior and Michigan to the north; by Lake Michigan to the east; by Illinois to the south; and by Iowa to the southwest and Minnesota to the northwest. A border dispute with Michigan was settled by two cases, both Wisconsin v. Michigan, in 1934 and 1935. The state’s boundaries include the Mississippi River and St. Croix River in the west, and the Menominee River in the northeast.

With its location between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River, Wisconsin is home to a wide variety of geographical features. The state is divided into five distinct regions. In the north, the Lake Superior Lowland occupies a belt of land along Lake Superior. Just to the south, the Northern Highland has massive mixed hardwood and coniferous forests including the 1,500,000 acres (6,100 km2) Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, as well as thousands of glacial lakes, and the state’s highest point, Timms Hill. In the middle of the state, the Central Plain has some unique sandstone formations like the Dells of the Wisconsin River in addition to rich farmland. The Eastern Ridges and Lowlands region in the southeast is home to many of Wisconsin’s largest cities. This area was not covered by glaciers during the most recent ice age, the Wisconsin Glaciation. Overall, 46% of Wisconsin’s land area is covered by forest. Langlade County has a soil rarely found outside of the county called Antigo silt loam.[63]

Wisconsin, along with Minnesota and Michigan, was among the Midwestern leaders in the emergent American state university movement following the Civil War in the United States. By the start of the 20th century, education in the state advocated the “Wisconsin Idea”, which emphasized service to the people of the state. The “Wisconsin Idea” exemplified the Progressive movement within colleges and universities at the time.

Schools would then have to align their curriculum to that standard in order to certify students. Industries are constantly changing. Continuing education is required for workers to stay current with the latest developments, skills, and new technologies required for their fields. Certain professions also require continuing education to comply with laws, remain licensed or certified, or maintain membership in an association or licensing body. Overall, continuing education is considered a way for professionals to keep abreast of their fields so they don’t lag behind. Even though we have no organized professional body for instructional design, it is on us to continue to develop so that we keep pace with all of the change.

CHCP (2014) listed 10 reasons why someone should continue their education:

1.      Be more qualified. 

2.      Make more money. 

3.      Demonstrate success. 

4.      Gain a competitive edge. 

5.      Secure your future. 

6.      A better lifestyle. 

7.      Gain confidence. 

8.      Improve your social network. 

9.      Improve your discipline. 

10.   Improve your business network. 

While some of these are really self-serving, some help the profession as a whole. Being more qualified, improving the discipline, and improving the social network all help to advance the community of practice. This in turn will produce better engagements among fellow practitioners in the field.

I am not allowed to go for the doctorate at this time, as my wife is through with me pursuing additional degrees. I have other ways to improve myself, as I can run my own blogs and continue to write articles for my discipline. I am in the military segment, and that special area has its own quirks which need to be written about. There are also networking opportunities where I can visit with some of the other designers at the ATSC conferences. How much easier this would be if we had a professional certifying body that required CTE’s so that everyone would have a central location to share.  

3)  Considering how quickly eLearning theories and practices have evolved, and in anticipating more changes in the future, how will you ensure that you as an instructional design professional will keep abreast of future changes? Your response should include relevant facts and information from the reading assignment and outside sources that support your argument and must include accurate, in-text APA-style citations.

 Dempsey and Van Eck (2012) state, “more complex e-learning systems are appearing at an unprecedented rate and can be mystifying” (p. 287). Trying to keep up with everything is impossible, but you can manage to find the right combination of tools that can keep you up to date. The first is to try an hone in on what technologies are going to stay around.

 Adobe is a company that leads the charge in many design areas. I know people that love Corel products as well, but Adobe is the gold standard for many of the tools we use. They update and release new programs every few months, and if you subscribe to certain feeds, you can often try the beta version, or see features before the product launch. It becomes important to pay attention to new products rolling out into the market, because they may replace something you use now, or bundle it into a new product. Often, having the subscription will also allow you to enter areas where certain types of training are available, and every little bit helps to keep on the upside of the curve.

 Subscribing to Journals in the field are also very helpful to keep current in what is being published in the profession. There are many different journals at this point, and they cover technology, education, computers, and learning. None have an official “Instructional Design and Technology” Journal name, but many are closely related with the design and education fields. Some even have some open acceptance for opportunities to publish, which is another avenue to stay current. The best way to keep out in front of the changes is to be the one making the changes. Then, everyone has to keep up with you.

The program features a liberal arts foundation with a scientific approach to understanding human behavior. Students learn about international and sociocultural diversity, psychology processes, theoretical perspectives, and historical trends.

LeTourneau University offers an online Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree that features a faith-based curriculum emphasizing Christian counseling techniques. The program is aimed at preparing students for graduate school, along with a variety of careers like counseling, missions, and child development. The program requires 126 credits to graduate and students must also complete a senior seminar.

Location: Riverside, California Tuition: $547 per unit

California Baptist Universityís online Bachelor of Arts in Psychology incorporates general psychology and behavioral science principles, psychological theories, and critical-thinking skills. The program is designed for working adults and students often finish their degree program in as few as 16 months.

Location: Springfield, Missouri Tuition: $299 per credit hour

Drury Universityís online psychology program offers a Bachelor of Science degree. The program is administered through the Behavioral Science Department Program at the College of Continuing Professional Studies. The psychology degree focuses on mental processes and behavior. In order to earn the degree, students must complete 25 hours of required psychology courses, along with a senior seminar and six hours of psychology electives.

Location: Saint Leo, Florida Tuition: $5,640 per semester

Saint Leo University offers an online Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree. The program ensures that students receive a well-rounded education with an emphasis on understanding human behavior. The program consists of 120 credits with 39 credits toward psychology core courses.

Location: Richmond, Kentucky Tuition: $400 per credit hour

Eastern Kentucky University offers an online Bachelor of Science in Psychology that emphasizes communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Students can complete the program 100 percent online. The program requires 120 credits and students must complete Introduction to Psychology, Information Literacy in Psychology, and Statistics-Research Methods. A capstone course is also required.

Location: Ottawa, Kansas Tuition: $490 per credit hour

Ottawa University offers an online Psychology program that confers a Bachelor of Arts degree upon completion. The programís goal is to give students a foundation in human mental, personal, intellectual, physiological, and social development. The school offers a communication concentration within the degree.

#26 – Northwestern State University of Louisiana

Location: Natchitoches, Louisiana Tuition: $325 per credit hour

Northwestern State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree. It is the stateís first bachelor of psychology degree offered completely online. The program focuses on developing strong communication skills, while at the same time understanding ethical issues and the similarities and differences between people. The program consists of a liberal arts foundation and 48 hours of major courses, totaling in 120 credit hours.

#27 – Brescia University

Location: Owensboro, Kentucky Tuition: $405 per credit hour

At Brescia University, students can earn an online Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. The university is a private Catholic school that enrolls about 700 students. Students in the psychology program gain an understanding in human development and behavior, which can lead to furthering education or a variety of careers. The program features flexible courses and students can earn their degree in as little as two years.

#28 – Notre Dame College

Location: South Euclid, Ohio Tuition: $450 per credit hour

The online Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree at Notre Dame College teaches students to utilize basic research methods, recognize international and sociocultural diversity, and understand human behavior. Students can pick from four concentration areas: Psychology of Special Populations, Clinical and Counseling, Psychology as a Science, and Social and Organizational. The program is offered fully online and students can complete it at their own pace.

#29 – Post University

Location: Waterbury, Connecticut Tuition: $570 per credit hour

Post University offers an online Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree. The program is designed to give students insight into human behavior and how it affects everyday life. Classes are offered six times each year and students typically earn their online degree in two to three years. The program includes two concentration tracks: Organizational Studies; and Human Development, Education, and Health. A minor is also available in Forensic Psychology. The program requires 120 credits for graduation.

#30 – Lesley University

Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts Tuition: $445 per credit

Lesley University’s online psychology program lets students earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology while studying at their own pace. The program is offered in six eight-week sessions and all students must complete an internship, a lab course, and a capstone course. Students must complete 120 credits for graduation.

February Writers’ Forum

In my journey through the steps of independent publishing, refining my writing skills, and most recently completing a successful agent search, I’ve come across some excellent information, tips, tools, and shortcuts that I think would be beneficial to any writer. Once a month, I’ll share the “best of” information and news from the publishing industry as well as feature other authors and writing instructors with tips to share. I am incredibly thankful for the assistance and advice given to me from writing and publishing professionals and am happy pay that forward.

KDP Select . . . what is it and why does the Smashwords’ founder call it “a cancer?”  

Mark Coker, the founder of Smashwords, writes his top ten predictions for the book industry in 2017.  Number 4 really jumped out at me: “The publishing industry will begin to recognize KDP Select as the cancer that it is.”  

I wanted to talk about this a little bit for those of us in the indie publishing world. Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is the powerhouse of sales for our e-books. That's just a fact. And the more we can learn about the ins and outs of the Kindle world, the better off we'll be. Knowledge is power . . . so let's walk through a few things.

First, you need to know that Smashwords as an e-book distributor is a direct competitor to KDP Select . . . even though Smashwords will distribute some titles via Kindle. But this doesn’t automatically discount Coker’s words. Coker knows a lot about the industry and his statement is worthy of discussion.

Second, a quick definition of the following (somewhat familiar) acronyms will help avoid confusion.  

KDP = Kindle Direct Publishing is the platform that is used to manage/upload Kindle e-book content for Amazon.

KDP Select = Once you have books with KDP you can further choose to make that title exclusive to Amazon/KDP by enrolling it in KDP Select. You cannot have this e-book available through any other channels. When you choose this options your book becomes available to readers through the Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Owners Lending Library programs.

Kindle Unlimited (KU) = An e-book subscription service which allows readers access to an unlimited number of books for $9.99/month – unlimited number of reads but you can only have ten books on your device at a time.

Kindle Owners Lending Library (KOLL) = A benefit of the Amazon prime membership and allows the reader/enrollee to borrow one book per month with no due date.

So onto Mark Coker’s prediction: I think that many writers who have enrolled their titles in Kindle Select have already begun to realize the precarious position they were in when KDP changed the payment system from a per-book fee to a per-page-read fee. (There are tons of articles written about the payment structure change made in July of 2015 – both in favor and against.)

Although many authors continue to have success with KDP Select enrollment, I think that the changes to payment structures can make it difficult for authors to gain the royalty share that they deserve for their work. (Again – many articles written on this topic.) I say can, because many authors continue to do well with the per-page payment and even if there was some loss of revenue, many authors are willing to stick with their exclusive Amazon arrangement because of the market share Amazon commands over the other e-book platforms. That means that authors (especially those with e-books only) are often completely reliant on Amazon and have no predictability on revenue given that Amazon can make payment structure changes at any time. The “What will Amazon do next?” question is what scares me. The good news is that Kindle Select enrollment periods are only 90 days in length and you can opt out after that. So it is a limited commitment if you find it is not for you.

DRM – Digital Rights Management and Protection Against Book Piracy

Yes, another technical topic, but this is going to be quick, and I include this here because I wish I had understood this four years ago. When you get to the point of uploading your e-book, you will have to make the decision to engage DRM or Digital Rights Management.

The article from Bookworks explains that “DRM is a form of protection for eBooks that ties a purchased book to a specific user account. By doing so, only the purchaser of the eBook will be able to read the eBook. If the DRM protected eBook were to be shared with someone else, they would not be able to access or read the eBook due to the DRM protection.”

You would think that this is a no-brainer to check this box, but actually this analogy from the Magnolia Media Network makes the case against DRM. "DRM is like putting a lock on your book, but it only keeps out the honest people not the content pirates. Those who pirate book content have ways around DRM anyway and DRM can prevent those who buy your book from accessing it on multiple devices." (More pros and cons here.)

NOTE: With some e-book distributors, you will not have a choice to chose DRM or not, but many of the e-book platforms will enable some sort of safety checks to protect book content anyway. If you upload directly to the Kindle Direct Publishing, this is a choice you will have to make and once you publish your book that choice CANNOT BE CHANGED.

And on the discussion of book piracy, please make sure to officially copyright your book through the US Copyright office. Certain studies are referenced saying that book piracy (which does occur) has little to no negative impact on book revenue. My internal radar makes me wonder if that is true. Please protect yourself by at least obtaining a copyright registration. (I hope no one reading this has had one of their books pirated, but if you have and are willing to share the experience and what you did, please let us know.)  

Using Song Lyrics and Other Copyrighted Material in Your Book

I never thought that I was going to have to worry about this, but I had this awesome idea to include some Bob Dylan lyrics in a novella I was writing. Let’s suffice it to say that this is a difficult road for an author to navigate. In the end, I paraphrased the lyrics within dialog and only used the song titles—which are NOT copyrighted. If you cannot find a “work around” such as this and feel the copyrighted material is essential to your book, you must get permission from the copyright holder. This is not a quick process in most cases and may come with hefty use fees. Learn more from Galleycat here.

Here’s how I ended up referencing copyrighted material without infringing on the song’s copyright in the Circle of Nine Novella – Phoebe’s Mission:

Mack set down his beer and reached for the guitar. He strummed a few chord, making some tuning adjustments. “Here’s one of my favorites. Do you like Bob Dylan?”                   Phoebe nodded and let her head rest back against the rocker as Mack began. His voice was very good. Combined with Dylan’s amazing lyrics, Phoebe was in for a treat as he sang “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” He continued on with more Dylan, obviously his favorite. When he got to the suggestive lyrics of “Lay Lady Lay,” Phoebe’s eyes flew to his face.He stared right back at her, shamelessly challenging her with the words about lying across his big brass bed. The last line, imploring the woman in the song to stay, hung in the air.

Create Your Author Central Page on Amazon (US/UK)

Here’s a new checklist for authors who need to set up their author central page on both Amazon US and Amazon UK. And, no, the information you enter on the Amazon US page does not cross over to the UK page. You’ll need to enter that separately. This was a good reminder for me to update my UK author page with my new-ish biography.  

POST-PUBLICATION INFORMATION

Quick and Manageable Book Event Info

I like the simplicity of this five-point check list for successful author events. I agree with all of these . . . but acknowledge that number 1—which says “bring a buddy to help you talk up your book” is sometimes a luxury.

On the organization side of things, I’d add “get a credit card reader” to this list. Do not lose sales because you cannot take a credit card. The fees are less than a lost sale. The two most often used options for this are Paypal and Square.

And another list of creative book promotion ideas was so well done, I wanted to share it here, too. Some of these are genre or book topic specific, but worth a look to see if they might be adapted to what you write. The best general advice: “Always have a box of books in your car.” I have missed opportunities for sales by not always following this advice. Don’t miss out . . . hike that box of books out to your car today. Throw in some of your other promo materials like bookmarks and postcards. You never know when someone will be interested or you might find yourself in place that would be a perfect fit for a stack of bookmarks or postcards.
