It’s really interesting to see how the Darkling uses the truth to manipulate. I fully believe he meant it when he said “you and i are going to change the world”, “you are a grisha, you’re never alone”, his speech about being tired of fighting the war in 1x04. he does mean it, but the purpose of him saying it is not genuine expression of emotion, but enticing sympathy, creating a connection to exploit. and i find that smart, fascinating and terrifying.
and yet, in scene with alina in the study during the winter fete, was one of the few times he was genuine in his intentions. despite all his calculations, he never realised how lonely he was. being ancient and living amount mortals takes its toll. its lonely. and we see that loneliness since he was a child, always desperate to connect to people, and having them turn against him, or die because of him. so i do think his need to have alina on his side, to be with him was about more than power. it was about finally finding someone to share eternity with. the darkling is a master manipulator, but he didn’t plan for how human he himself is. and that’s what makes him interesting
#the darkling#general kirigan#i am...fascinated by him#he is the epitome of the end justifies the meansand the moral degradation that causes#he is a tradegy#he started with a noble goal but got lost#i think alina reminds him of his lost humanity#and that's why i think this dynamic is interesting to explore#tho i would say purely from a spiritual point of you he can benefit more from having alina by his side than her from him#idk idk they fascinate me#darklina

If we don’t get TWoW next year I’m—literally not going to do anything—except maybe be a little sad and disappointed—because it’s probably tiring for George to have fans constantly hounding him about the world he’s built and created and nurtured for over 20 years.
this might be controversial but artists and authors don’t owe you anything. sure it’ll be sad if for whatever reason he just doesn’t finish the series, but he doesn’t owe us anything. we like to live in the world he created and make really cool theories and ideas about what everything meansand tbh I’m grateful to him for what he’s given us so far.
#it’s fun to make jokes about evil santa but I’m sure the guy is tired of constant questions#asoiaf#got
