Also since it’s cold and rainy and my heat is on for the first time this fall... a look back at this year’s flowers that I haven’t yet posted on the feed. Garden is still going strong despite light frost & I’m hoping it keeps going a lil longer. I have a new obsession with striped/variegated foliage - started by peppermint zinnias. Also the deep red/black sunflowers rivaled the black tulips in dramatic bloom. It’s been a stressful week for me but waking up to the meadow coming to life is pure bliss. This weekend between rains I planted ny ironweed, joe pye weed, yellow & purple coneflower, and many more native plugs I ordered online - both because some of them are hard to find and considered “weeds” even though they are hugely beneficial to birds and pollinators. Also plugs are an economical and faster way to populate the meadow with specific species, and got a lil more use of the dibble bar we purchased for tree/shrub planting which was a lot faster than digging holes! I am excited to see between that and our tree/shrub plantings what shows up in our backyard. #meadowmagic isn’t just the flowers it’s the light at dawn as dusk, it’s the buzz of insect and happy birds eating them, it’s the deer, turtle, mink, and heron that have visited it. The nature of growth - I saw a quote a few years ago about how everything in nature takes a rest and so should we. It seems cheesy but it kind of changed my life, it came at a time when I needed to hear it most. If I had seen it before it might not have struck as deep, but a few years later and I really see it. This is the meadow and trees at rest, there is no sign of life above the surface of the soil to tell you which plants are dead and which are just hibernating. The first year I remember feeling anxiety at this, when planting new things wondering if they would survive... talk about projecting 😂 I know there is life in those roots and it’s growing stronger under the soil, we’re only a lil more than two weeks away from the first day of spring, Persian new year/norooz and it will all come to life soon after.
