Iron Bleeds Golden, Extremis - Iron Man Fanfic Preview.
“…Yeah… Yeah. No, good job. I owe you dinner. That Greek place with the belly dancer you like.” He waited for the ecstatic thanks on the other side of the phone before speaking once more. “Send it all over. Nice work.” Tony said as casually as he could in spite of what he’d just heard.
This job never gets easier.
He ended the call and paused for a second, looking quietly at the door in front of him. Maya was no doubt staring daggers into his back, her anxiety almost palpable throughout the plane’s cabin. If he hadn’t known her better, he would’ve sworn she was on the verge of a breakdown.
Tony inserted the eight-digit password into the door lock and opened it, then turned around to face Maya. He kept his mouth neutral for what he was about to tell her, not wanting to raise her distress further. Years of practice ensured his voice didn’t tremble. He had been doing this for a long while now, but being the one to deliver the bad news was always painful no matter what.
“My guy hacked your dead boss’ files. He gave Extremis to a group of militiamen local to you. Domestic terrorists.” She gasped softly, and Tony had to stop himself from placing a hand on her shoulder. “I have to make some calls.”
Her expression said it all. A hopeless glimmer in her eyes that swiftly betrayed the tough front she attempted to put up. She broke down right after, burying her head in her palms, tears beginning to spill. Tony didn’t blame her.
He wished he could’ve stayed there to comfort her. Tell her it’d be okay, that this would all be over soon, but he lacked the precious luxury of time, and he had a responsibility to uphold.
He walked into the tail end of the plane and closed the door behind him. Noticing his presence, the transparent screen in front of him lit up, permeating the small room in a dim blueish hue. Entering a special combination on his Stark Phone, he tuned in to a secure frequency and brought the device to his ear.
“Avengers intermediary channel. Priority A-1. Iron Man.”
A profile picture of himself popped up in the upper left corner, sporting a wall of text about his current location and so on right under it. To the right, a scan outlining his armor appeared, along with a vertical progress bar near it that was already starting to fill up. The word “Power” sat at the top. Beneath it all was another bar, this one numbering the loading time for each suit section, as briefly detailed by the \Sequence Activated plastered onto it.
“Information regarding attack on F.B.I Station, Huston. Forward to all relevant law enforcement entities.”
REMOTE WARM-UP AND DIAGNOSTICS, he read unconsciously.

Chiming rang out upon the charging sequence’s completion. It was plenty effective at bringing Tony out of his thoughts, in particular those about the fifty burned bodies he had seen just twenty minutes ago.
“Upload of related files to follow two minutes behind this message.” He took a seat in the small chair, tapping on the table impatiently. The armor’s gloves were selected next, their progress visible on the bar bellow. They finished charging before he ever got the chance to finish his sentence. The tracker moved on to the next part.

The screen cleared save for the armor hologram, which had stopped spinning and was reimposed in the middle, clicking repeatedly to draw his attention. Tony closed his phone and crossed his arms, leaning forward to stare into ole Shellhead’s newest incarnation. Field tested and deployed, that was… And yet he wasn’t satisfied. There was still so much to be improved, just at a glance Tony could see where he had gone “wrong”, even though thinking that was a lie by this point in his career. If he had truly made mistakes in the design process, he would’ve died long ago, and Iron Man wouldn’t have made it to the history books.
Nothing was wrong with the armor per se, he simply couldn’t help not accepting his achievements. Tony supposed that was in part the greed talking, but that’s just how he worked.
He’d make an armor, think it was revolutionary, take it on a test ride and be thoroughly impressed with it, then the next day be disappointed and begin working on the next instalment. It was like an itch- an addiction, always bugging him to keep tinkering, to keep improving. Because that’s what he did, and staying atop the competition was his whole deal.
What competition, the PR department would remind him to say. Well, at least they had a good reason for doing that. The phrase had become the most successful marketing slogan in his company’s history.
The point being; he always needed to wear the best version of the suit, otherwise it wouldn’t feel the same. However, when one went by the name Tony Stark “best” was a relative term. It was temporary, meaning he’d never truly be satisfied with any iteration of the Iron Man, no matter how far ahead of the modern world it’d be.
Which in reality was a weird metacommentary on his own person as well as his metal persona, but the distinction between those two he still hoped to blur. If he bled the best parts of one into the other… There was no telling how much good he could achieve. Really, Tony was the only thing holding himself back. Tony kept himself from being enough.
And what a depressing little thought that was…
Pillinger’s interview echoed through his head. He had asked the man if he had changed anything, if he was certain his journalism had improved anybody’s life over the years, even by a small margin, but truthfully speaking, Tony had asked himself that.
It haunted him that he didn’t know. He should, he knew more than most people ever would in their lifetimes, but regarding this matter he just… didn’t.
…And all he wanted was to help. To not be that Ghost of the Twentieth Century. To not leave behind a legacy of corpses, all piled atop the nigh infinite cache of Stark brand weapons hidden in the grounds of war ridden countries. Whether to make up for what he had done, or out of a genuine desire to aid others- the answer eluded him. Some days it was crystal clear, others he had his doubts for a majority of the time. But he knew he wanted to be more than what he had been.
Perhaps a… beacon like Steve? Tony half chuckled internally, dismissing the idea. That was a nice fantasy, wasn’t it? For people to look up to the skies and see a red and gold knight descending from high above, knowing then and there that everything would be okay. Those were the types of dreams he used to have in his childhood, back when he’d spend his afternoons playing with medieval knights in shining armor. Slaying dragons, helping the people and many such adventures.
Life had a funny way of coming full circle. What he’d imagined so long ago had become true to some capacity, but, well... Things could be better. Or maybe that was the ungrateful perfectionist in him talking, never content with the present.
Again he would have to brandish his sword, a regular practice these days, and make sure more people lived than they died. Somehow the prospect of helping people to continue on living made the sacrifices worth it. A small blessing if he’d ever seen one.
Tony caught his reflection in the glass and narrowed his eyes. The sight was identical to the one he saw in the morning every single day, but for the moment it didn’t bother him. The more he looked, the less he felt the need to turn away.
“Oh, now you can look at me.”
o0o
He had cut off his main propulsion as soon as he’d hit about 60 miles up, entering a controlled orbit right on the edge of the mesosphere. Sadly, He couldn’t appreciate the beauty of seeing the Earth’s curvature, as he could only stay there for exactly one minute before having to fly black down. Any more and the Earth’s rotation would lengthen his trip instead of shortening it.
“…Since the station burned to the ground, there’s no security footage I could ask for.” Tony thought out loud. “And anyone who did have access to it is either dead or injured. Give me a summary of his powers from publicized witness reports. I’d like to know what we’re dealing with.” He ordered the suit.
Processing data… Main powers include standard super-soldier enhancements. Quote: “The guards were shooting at him but he was too fast for them. You could barely see him. Some got lucky and managed to nail him but he just shrugged it off like it was nothing. Anyone that didn’t get out in time was torn apart or burned alive.”. Statements indicate suspect is also capable of fire breathing.
“Yeah, I gathered as much.” Tony tried not to associate what he’d heard with the pictures he had seen, but the images had already been carved into his head. He was reminded of the man whose face had been burnt off almost down to the bone. Poor bastard. “…Go on.”
Low to average imperviousness. Subsonic movement, possibly higher. Unclear if strength is a result of speed. Nature of “Extremis” compound raises the potential for further developments. Prolonged fight is ill-suited. Threat level five but remains unknown. Moderate caution advised.
Tony hummed, keeping his gaze on the countless stars hanging above. Having the armor speak to him had proven to be a good way of sorting through his thoughts. Things got messy if he talked to himself all the time.
Use his enhanced senses against him. Hit him hard and do it fast. Attempt a quick knockout or restrain him when his guard is down.
He cursed himself for not having asked Maya to explain what other stuff Extremis could do. Improving the human body was only half the equation. She’d been pretty adamant about the fact her serum wasn’t your typical Erskine rip-off. And, well, Tony could imagine the consequences… A biological compiler that could rewrite the brain to improve the body was a horrifying concept. Erskine’s serum bettered what was there to begin with, but Extremis imposed those changes, and could be made to do literally anything… What if those changes occurred during the heat of battle, or after a prolonged period of time? It’d make someone super adaptable to any environment.
What if the guy who had taken Extremis would grow more dangerous by the hour? What if he developed more powers, or cancerous mutations, or biohazardous side effects? If Extremis was still in the prototype phase, what stopped an error from forcing the brain to keep editing the body?
The guy was a walking timebomb. Every second spent out in the open could mean a potential epidemic, or worse. If he felt threatened, his brain could make him secrete poisonous gas to kill people around him and so on. The possibilities were endless…
…Okay, maybe he was being a bit too paranoid and didn’t trust Maya’s work, but how could he take any chances? He knew better than most what happened when people attempted to play God with human biology. These days the examples of such endeavours were visible at every corner.
The alert sound of his HUD’s timer snapped him back to reality.
One minute has been reached. Orbital repositioning successful. Execute re-entry manoeuvres.
And Tony did just that. He began by angling himself head first toward the ground and raised his hands to shield his helmet. Once in the proper position, he fired off into a nosedive without so much as a warning. Clocking in at Mach 6, he passed through the high-altitude clouds before the suit could even ignite into flames.
When the fires of re-entry did engulf him however, the heat was dispersed across the armor’s surface, plates further negating the melting temperatures. Tony was kept nice and cool beneath the metal, and as that was happening, the excess energy was syphoned into an afterburner for added thrust.
At the speed he was going, the ETA to Bastrop was two minutes on the dot.

Lady Jessica by mairithetree
Some exploration of the character Lady Jessica from Dune ❤️ After watching the movie I wanted to create some costumes for her ✨ Bene Gesserit are so fascinating and powerful * _ * I tried to recreate that feeling.
The main references here are Ancient Greece clothing, Greek statues and Maya Hensen's fashion for the mask in the first picture. ⭐

OK
so i have made a list of all the MCU movies (not you, spiderverse, you’re your own delightful creation) and gone through imdb’s cast list to look through How Many Women Were There. Imdb goes by payroll usually, so once I got to women who were not named or whose roll boiled down to “I have an unmentioned name or am mostly a cameo from the manga” I stopped reading down
I said “there’s like two women per movie” but it turns out i mostly just REMEMBER there being two women before movie, because it feels like we only really see two women plus some recurring background characters, and barring things like Endgame/Infinity war the female characters are cycled out immediately when more than two might concievably be in the same room together. The most common number of what I’d consider “main character” (in at least 1/3rd of the story, with +5 lines) girls is about two per movie, though some are higher and some are 1 gorl.
Characters I didn’t remember or was worried others may not have a (parenthesis) beside their names.
Movies I have not seen are in italic.
Female characters I’d say were in at least 1/3rd of the movie doing more than being a literal background lamp are in bold. I know this is subjective.
the term ‘under-5′ refers to a character who has five lines of dialogue or less. So they are not an extra, but they are not a main character. I haven’t seen most of these movies since the years they came out so this is what i recall of things and not necessesarily exactly accurate to the line count. Half these movies I don’t even remember Maria Hill being in except to stand there and say “yes sir” once or twice, but it is entirely possible I missed something, considering I forgot her existance for a good half of these.
List is below the cut for length.
This list does not take into consideration race, though I will note the majority of these characters are definitely white, and those who are not white either tend to have their skin color altered (ex Nebula) or not be repeat castings (ex Topaz)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

« ° THREAD ROULETTE RESULTS !!
« ° hey lovely members !! here’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for, i will reveal the group results of our very own thread roulette !! first of all, since we had an uneven amount of characters we had to make groups of three people instead of two. that means we have a total of nine groups. we would like to encourage everyone who’s part of the same group to interact with each other. so, for example, if jacob, charlie and lucas were part of the same group, i ( admin fie ) would try to set up a two threads for jacob, one with charlie and one with lucas !! i could even hit both sien and ryan up at the same time and we could try to plot a chatzy with all three of our characters. as you can see, the possibilities are endless !! if anything is unclear, don’t be afraid to hit us up if you have any questions. now without further ado, you can find the groups underneath the cut !! we hope you have a great time plotting and writing these threads and we can’t wait to read them. xxx
group one: jace patterson, noah park & lexi kim meet at the campus movie night.
group two: sara ballio, nessie kang & reece kweon meet at the local night club.
group three: olivia mitchell, finley lincoln & chloe fawn meet at the local karaoke bar.
group four: asa gray flores, juniper mae jenkins & jacob kingston meet at the student protest on campus.
group five: thea sinclaire, mani mistry & maya tandel meet at the local starbucks/cafe.
group six: juliet chambers, kieran rush & charlie cornelissen meet at the charity bake sale on campus.
group seven: diana kingston, lena bakker & lucas wolcott meet at the local walking/biking trail.
group eight: james hensen, andie vega & abbey ronson meet at the campus bookstore.
group nine: kelcie tiller, parker ellis & matthew levitt meet at the local football stadion.
disclaimer: these groups and locations were all randomized. keep in mind that you don’t have to keep your characters at the set location throughout the thread; you can always start at the given place and continue it somewhere else. with that being said, HAVE FUN with our mini event, darlings !!

I was just thinking about this yesterday about how we have a near perfect understanding of Tony's upbringing, we've seen his parents, we know he went to MIT, and we witness him having hobbies and interests and hyperfixations and creating things alone. We even have access to his dreams and his ptsd episodes but Steve Rogers literally has no life outside Captain America??? The only past we witness is his obsession with his best friend and a girl be briefly knew and kissed one time and that's so weird if you think about Tony's character being limited to Rhodey and Maya Hensen outside of being Ironman 🤷🏽♀️
According to some comic, his dad died on WW1, according to some other he came back from WW1 a violent alcoholic and Steve got that keep getting back up attitude from his mom, who later died due to poverty, being a single mom after his dad died, doing multiple blue collar jobs and not being able to afford healthcare for them both. I learned all this from fanfic authors but MCU Steve? We just know that Bucky asked him for a sleepover after his mom died offscreen and he declined. That's it???
Thanks to fanfic authors, I also know that he dropped out of art school to join the army but have we ever see him do anything at all with it the way we see wonder woman work at a museum? No! We saw him sketch once in TFA but that's it and his only human moment post TFA was a 2 minute deleted scene from the first Avengers movie.
Does he have ptsd from crashing a plane and being frozen for decades? Nope. Dude just walked it off and had some punching bag therapy for tough guys.
It's like he just stopped being a person after TFA and was just limited to a two dimensional superhero constantly in Captain America mode.
hot take: mcu has done such a piss poor job of writing steve's character, of building his relationships that literally there are no posts about him just being a normal.. person, no headcanons, no meta, no move-to-tears posts, nothing and i will die mad about it

Sigh* I’m not doing anything else today soooo...
Sour Sharon’s seem to be under the impression that we’re angry, but the truth is they are the bitter ones. Yeah, the kiss repulsed most people. It was disgusting and disturbing and took Steve out character. But guess what? Marvel is about to pretend it didn’t happen. Marvel is about to pretend that Sharon didn’t happen.
Why did you say this? What was your point here? Because even so, it doesn’t change it happened. Much like how they can pretend Betty Ross or the entirety of The Incredible Hulk didn’t happen (extremely underrated btw), but it’s still a thing that happened. Bruce/Nat (also universally hated) was a thing- and as much as people hated that and/or ignored it- it didn’t change the fact it happened. Trust me, Marvel won’t forget about it as much as people like to take about it whether they hated Staron or not.
She’s not going to be in Infinity Wars. She and that kiss were universally panned by audiences and critics alike. That’s a fact! Read any review. And producers had to come out and clarify that Staron wasn’t technically incest because audiences were so repulsed. Which after the release of CW was all they ever said about Sharon and Staron. Hardly a statement of belief in the character or “relationship!” New merchandise didn’t stem from Sharon’s appearance in the MCU.
More rambling as if it’s going to change how I’m supposed to change how I felt about the kiss. You’re right, universally hated I’m afraid I have to admit, but why do we have to reminded? I’ve seen the reviews- and I still don’t see much problems with it, the movie all together was a mess but no one’s talking about that- instead we’re all still pressed over this kiss as if the movie revolved around it. More important things happened in this movie that I wish more people would talk about, but we’re still arguing over a kiss.
Most Marvel women don’t get merchandise... Where’s your outrage over that? Marvel hates making female merchandise, given how Maya Hensen role as the IM3 villain was dropped because Marvel said she wouldn’t sale. #wheresmygamora? Remember that? People still want more Black Widow merch and a movie, Marvel’s second most popular female to Peggy, and even she gets shafted to side in the execs hands.? Marvel favored Peggy for a long time and I get the hype was real with her TV show and her cameos on AOS, Age of Ultron, Ant Man or wherever else. But if you all can’t see she’s being favored over other Marvel women who are shafted then that’s sad. You’re privileged, of course be proud.
The actress who played her has never been invited to a convention as a guest. If anything, playing Sharon hurt her career. She was out of work for year and had to return to TV as a supporting player, not a lead. And even in the comics now, Sharon is being written as an antagonist, maybe even a villain, for a beloved character. And if anyone should try and read her there now, that’s what they are going to see of her: Sharon bullying a young black girl.
I think saying CW hurt her career is a bit harsh, if she finally got some work then that’s good for her, granted it maybe isn’t what she hoped but from what I last read she’s still under contract with Marvel they could very much decide to use her again some time- especially when they go with the BuckyCap arc she could be a supporting player who knows. Emily was put in a bad position, if she had more screen time prior I think most people would’ve warmed up to her, Hollywood would possibly see her as a saleable actress and will sign her for projects left and right. It is not soley Emily’s fault she’s been thrown under the bus because of CW.
Yes, Marvel is making everybody assholes now if you haven’t been paying attention- if I recall they made Magneto HYDRA, of course Cap as well, if they’re going to touch Sharon with that mess then that’s unfortunate that an overall well-loved character would be written in such a way. Congratulations, you may have legitimate reasons to hate her now.
but guess what Sour Sharon’s – YOU LOSE. You can blame misogyny and sexism and ship wars all you like, but Sharon had her shot to move into the mainstream and people hated her. The character will never recover from being Peggy’s poor substitute, her incestuous niece. Sharon Carter is either completely forgettable or completely hated by mainstream media, and I’m glad. Be sour – sour Sharon’s because no one liked your fav.
I didn’t know we were competing...
It’s good to know you feel this way......
Anyway, If you weren’t so mad then why did you make this confession? And why is it in the tag? And why are you still pressed over how we feel? We’re here in this tag because we’re mostly a community that loves Sharon and it’s you guys who are coming here and telling us why you don’t like her or why we should hate her, you’re trying to make yourselves heard to a group of fans who are going to refute you? Which I don’t understand it honestly. If you guys really cared to prove how bad a human Sharon is we’d get more of these types of posts publicly, the hate blog would cross tag their posts in places other than Sharon related tags, and we probably wouldn’t be here, but again it’s just one...two people who we can, for the most part, tolerate like I’ve learned to tolerate MOST things that’s said from anti blogs but now and then I see the incoherent mess and I’m obliged to say something.
-Mod T
#im so bored#i was going to ignore this earlier but i have nothing to do right now and i have to work so much this week#i may as well make good use of my free time and reply- again- to a sour patch#sharon carter

☠ I want to do Science Sisters stuff so bad but I'm always so paranoid about reaching out to new people even if I read their rules and everything five times before hand. >.
((Wait… did you say Science Sisters?))
((if you’re a Jane Foster/Maya Hensen/Helen Cho/any female scientist I’m forgetting blog or else another genderbend of a male scientist, then I would probably be very interested in rping with you!
Bryce needs more Science sisters and girlfriends!
If you come off anon I’d be perfectly willing to look over your blog and tell you if I’m interested, though if I’m already following you then you should take that as a clear sign of interest!
Also remember that tumblr doesn’t always notify when someone follows me so I may not have realized you’re following me!))

“IRON MAN 3″ (2013) Review
"IRON MAN 3" (2013) Review One would think after the release of last year's "THE AVENGERS", Marvel Studios would call it quits on its saga about the team of superheroes who foiled an alien invasion in said movie. But the "THE AVENGERS" opened the possibility of a new threat to Earth, paving the way for a new slew of stories for the costumed Avengers. The beginning of this new group of films resulted in the release of "IRON MAN 3", the third movie about the sole adventures of billionaire Tony Stark aka Iron Man. The alien invasion from "THE AVENGERS" had left its mark on Tony. He has become even more popular than ever with the public. The U.S. government (including S.H.I.E.L.D.) seemed to be leaving him alone for the moment. And his relationship with Pepper Potts seemed to be going strong. However, Tony also seemed to be in the process of ironing out the kinks for his new method of accessing his Iron Man armor - a method that turned out to be a technological copy of Thor's habit of summoning the Mjölnir hammer. His chauffeur Happy Hogan has been promoted to Head of Security for Stark Industries. But Happy's caustic "Super Friends"indicated the latter's resentment toward Tony's newly forged connections to the other Avengers. Worst of all, Tony has been experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from the Avengers' battle against the invading Chitauri aliens. But these problems are nothing in compare to the re-emergence of an old acquaintance whom Tony first met at a New Year's Eve party in 1999. Thirteen years earlier, a drunken Tony and his date Dr. Maya Hansen encountered the disabled scientist Aldrich Killian, who offered them positions in his new company, Advanced Idea Mechanics. However, Tony rejects the offer, humiliating Killian in the process. Sometime after this encounter, Killian met Dr. Hansen and used her Extremis virus - an experimental regenerative treatment intended to allow recovery from crippling injuries - to heal his own disabilities. However, Extremis also gives the individual superhuman strength and allows him or her to generate heat. As it turns out, Killian is working for the latest threat to strike into the heart of American intelligence, a terrorist known as Mandarin. The latter has been responsible for a string of bombings that have left the intelligence agencies bewildered by any lack of forensic evidence. But Happy's encounter with Killian's major henchman, a former Army officer named Eric Savrin, in front of the Hollywood Chinese Theater leads him badly injured. And a very angry Tony issues a televised threat to capture the Mandarin. Former paramour Dr. Hansen appears at Stark's Malibu home to warn him about Killian and the Mandarin, but the latter orders Savrin to lead an attack on the house. Tony, Pepper and Dr. Hansen all survive. But the house is destroyed and Tony is forced to disappear to somewhere in Tennessee and discover a way to defeat the Mandarin. I was surprised to learn that Jon Favreau did not return as director for this third IRON MAN movie. Although "IRON MAN 2" proved to be a box office hit, many critics and moviegoers claimed that it was not as good as the first movie, "IRON MAN". It was not an opinion that I shared, but . . . it was an opinion that led Marvel Studios to ask Favreau to step down as director of "IRON MAN 3". Star Robert Downey Jr. suggested that the studio hire Shane Black to direct this third film. Downey Jr. and Black had first worked with each other in the 2005 comedy, "KISS KISS BANG BANG". Did changing directors help the IRON MAN franchise? I do not think so. I am not saying that "IRON MAN 3" was a bad movie. I thought it was far from bad. But a change in directors did not improve the franchise. It was a change that I believe was unnecessary in the first place. However . . . I still enjoyed this third film very much. One of the best things I could say about ""IRON MAN 3" is that it presented Tony with a very formidable opponent. The Mandarin proved to be not only scary, but very intelligent. The attack on Tony's Malibu home was mind boggling. But the manner in which the Mandarin managed to track Tony down to a small Tennessee town and steal the War Machine (re-named Iron Patriot) armor by tricking American intelligence and the military regarding his location, and luring James Rhodes (aka War Machine) into a trap struck me as pretty flawless. And in using the Hansen/Killian Extremis virus on disabled military veterans, the Mandarin managed to create a formidable private army. There were other aspects of Black and Drew Pearce's screenplay that I found very appealing. Although I had no problems with the Pepper Potts character in the previous two movies, I enjoyed the fact that Black and Pearce really put her through the wringer in this one - dealing with Tony's panic attacks, surviving the Malibu house attack, and becoming a prisoner. Pepper's ordeals finally paid off when she played a major role in defeating the Mandarin. Although Rhodey had a small presence in the movie's first half, his presence increased tenfold in the second half. And like Pepper, he played a major role in the Mandarin's defeat that I personally found very satisfying. The movie also featured some top-notch action sequences. For me, the second best of them all was the Mandarin's attack on Tony's Malibu house. But there were other sequences that I found impressive; including Happy's encounter with Eric Savrin and another benefactor of the Extremis virus in Hollywood, Tony's encounter with Savrin and Extremis muscle Ellen Brandt in Tennessee, and the final battle on an oil rig. Mind you, the latter was not perfect, but Pepper and Rhodey's actions in this sequence made it memorable for me. If the Malibu house attack was my second favorite action sequence, my favorite turned out to be Iron Man's encounter with Savrin aboard Air Force One and his rescue of the President's personnel following the plane's destruction. The use of free fall in Iron Man's rescue of the Presidential passengers really blew my mind. There were some complaints that Robert Downey Jr. seemed to be going through the motions in his portrayal of Tony Stark in this film. I cannot say that I agree with this opinion. Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Tony seemed more sober or stressed out, due to the character's inability to deal with the aftermath of the events in "THE AVENGERS". Perhaps this is not a Tony Stark that fans and critics wanted to see. But I congratulate both Downey Jr., Black and Pearce for allowing audiences to see how Tony dealt with the aftermath of encountering invading aliens. I had been impressed by Gwyneth Paltrow's portrayal of a stressed out Pepper Potts in "IRON MAN 2". Considering what she had endured in this movie, Paltrow pulled out the stops as she conveyed Pepper's array of emotions from wariness to fear and finally to anger. Frankly, I feel this movie featured her best performance as Pepper. I noticed that Don Cheadle seemed a lot more relaxed in the role of Lieutenant-Colonel James Rhodes aka War Machine (re-named Iron Patriot). As I had earlier stated, his presence in the movie's first half seemed rather minimal. But once the movie shifted toward Tony and the American government going after the Mandarin in Miami, his role became more prominent. Not only did Cheadle displayed his talent for comedy, but his James Rhodes proved to be just as much of a bad ass without his War Machine armor, as he was with it. Denied the director's chair for this movie, the screenwriters gave Jon Favreau's Happy Hogan was allowed a bigger role in the story, when the injuries he suffered at Eric Savrin's hands snapped Tony out of his lethargy to deal with the Mandarin. And Favreau gave a performance that I found both funny and poignant. In one article I had read, Guy Pearce described his role in "IRON MAN 3" as merely a cameo. Frankly, I think he may have exaggerated a bit. Like Don Cheadle, Pearce's presence in the movie's first half seemed minimal. In fact, his presence as Aldrich Killian did not seem to fully develop until the movie's last forty-five minutes or so. And his character slightly reminded me of the Dr. Curt Conners (the Lizard) character from last year's "THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN". But I must admit that Pearce did a great job of conveying the character's development from a pathetic and desperate man eager to use science to heal his disabilities to a charming former acquaintance of Pepper's and finally a truly scary and difficult-to-beat villain. I have never seen James Badge Dale portray a villain. But I have heard that he once portrayed a serial killer on two carryover episodes from "CSI: MIAMI" and "CSI: NEW YORK". I need to see those episodes, but I found Badge Dale's portrayal of henchman Eric Sevrin rather frightening and intimidating. Rebecca Hall portrayed Dr. Maya Hensen, the true creator of the Extremis virus, who found herself regretting her decision to work with Dr. Killian. Hall gave a sharp and witty performance, but I think her presence seemed pretty much wasted. William Sadler gave a solid performance as the President of the United States. Considering his talent, I do wish the script had allowed him to do more. I can say the same about Miguel Ferrer's ambiguous portrayal of the Vice-President. I finally come to Ben Kingsley's portrayal of the Mandarin. Many fans were upset over the changes that Black and Pearce made to the Mandarin character. I was not. I found their portrayal of the super villain amazing and mind boggling. And one has to thank Kingsley for giving what I feel was the most entertaining performance in the movie. In fact, I feel that the scene in which Tony meets the Mandarin for the first time is one of my favorite "hero-meets-villain" scenes of all time from any Marvel film. It is a scene I will always cherish. I do have a few complaints about "IRON MAN 3". I had already pointed out my slight disappointment at the limited manner in which the Maya Hensen character was utilized. Also, Tony's trip to Tennessee seemed a bit offbeat to me. I did not need to watch his developing friendship with the kid Harley, which struck me as trite. And although I found some satisfaction in the oil rig sequence - especially in regard to Pepper and Rhodey's action - I must admit that overall, it struck me as somewhat convoluted. It did not help that the entire sequence was shot at night. Between the night setting, Jeffrey Ford and Peter S. Elliot's shaky editing and the numerous Iron Man droids, I almost found the sequence disappointing. Well, let me put it another way . . . I have seen better. Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures are promoting this film as the best IRON MAN film ever. I cannot say that I agree. I feel it has a more complex story than the somewhat simplistic tale for "IRON MAN". But it has a set of flaws that makes it difficult for me to declare it as "the best". I guess "IRON MAN 2" is still my favorite. But I do believe that "IRON MAN 3" proved to be a very entertaining and exciting film. In the end, Shane Black did a top-notch job with the help of a decent script and excellent performances from a cast led by Robert Downey Jr.
