With Florence and the Machine, and Gwen Stefani as her idols, popette Mae Muller (who has a striking resemblance to an eighties Madonna) knows a thing or two about good tunes.
Writing music which appeals to teenage girls, Muller is wary of being called a role model, as she talks openly about her life, and anxieties, but doesn’t think she is qualified to have that responsibility.
As one of the new gen influencers, her reach has grown due to her popularity on Instagram, which she states is a great platform if you know how to use it properly,
At only 22, Muller is set to release another single, Leave it Out, and expect real emotions in her R&B-tinged vocals, reminiscent of Lily Allen, along with a lot more to come from this North London local.

Get local news, offers & more... On Saturday, July 23rd, I had the pleasure of seeing a truly first-rate production, a phenomenal performance of one of the greatest musicals ever written! Musicals at Richter, in Danbury, continues with their legacy of providing audiences what we yearn for in live theater, the right shows with the right cast. Rodgers and Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC was the perfect show to see outdoors on this lovely July night. Under the excellent direction of Jessica Smith, musical direction of Adam Snyder, and choreography of Lindsay Miller, this stellar cast truly made the hills come alive, on this new stage featuring a stunning set designed by John McMahon, complete with moveable pieces. The cast members radiate positive energy from the stage, truly entertaining the audience, and having fun playing their roles! For those not familiar with the storyline, it is set in 1938 Austria. Maria has not yet taken her vows as a nun, and as a result of her restlessness is asked to take a temporary leave and work for widowed Captain Von Trapp, caring for his seven children, ages sixteen and under. Maria brings music and singing into the lives of the children, children who come to really like her, as she does to them. Maria soon develops romantic feelings towards Captain Von Trapp, feelings that if reciprocated and developed into a marriage would prevent Maria from becoming a nun. This potential love conflict is exacerbated by the fact that Captain Von Trapp is in a courtship with another woman, the Baroness. Meanwhile, as the Nazi regime infiltrates Austria and insists that Austrians join them in acting, thinking, feeling, and speaking like a Nazi, while waving the Nazi flag, the Nazis set their sights on demanding that Captain Von Trapp joins their navy. Captain Von Trapp, being a loyal Austrian who respects Austria as Austria, not as being under Nazi infiltration, wants no part of the Nazi agenda, but is he free to be himself and act upon his own beliefs and convictions without jeopardizing his life and the lives of his children? Come to the show to find out! I tremendously enjoyed the familiar musical numbers, such as "The Sound of Music," "Do-Re-Mi," "Maria," "So Long, Farewell," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "The Lonely Goatherd," "Edelweiss," "Climb Every Mountain," and my favorite from this musical, "My Favorite Things." The excellent singing of this cast is enhanced by a talented live band.if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined')ez_ad_units.push([[336,280],'broadwayworld_com-under_first_paragraph','ezslot_1',160,'0','0']);if(typeof __ez_fad_position!='undefined')__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-broadwayworld_com-under_first_paragraph-0'); Emily Walsh stars as Maria, dazzling the audience with her amazing singing voice and powerful acting that draws the audience in, connecting with this central protagonist. Rob Mayette, as Captain Von Trapp, has an excellent voice and stage presence and truly commands the role when on stage. Rob Mayette and Emily Walsh play off each other very well creating a feeling of authenticity to their dynamics with each other, and with the children and other cast members. Their strong performances epitomize what these roles are and how they are meant to be played to maximize the greatness of the show! Claire Simard brings quality to the challenging role of the Baroness, showing that with the right actress, this deliberately dislikeable antagonist can still have pizzazz. Christopher Hetherington brings authenticity to Max Detweiler, a rather shady character with dubious motives. The seven children are magnificently portrayed by cast members who gel together so well that it is easy for the audience to forget that these performers are not real life siblings. Jillian Flynn leads the siblings as Liesl, the highly likeable eldest (sixteen going on seventeen.) The other siblings include Austin Etzbach as Friedrich, Gabby Messina as Louisa, Jack Rand as Kurt, Allyson Snyder as Brigitta, Kelly Inconstanti as Marta and Charlotte Harrington as Gretl.
All seven cast members bring quality and distinction to their specific characters, making their roles count, both as individuals and as a collective group! Each of these Von Trapp children has a unique personality while each of these cast members brings that personality out. They also harmonize well, and dance with precise synchronicity. The coordination they display with each other makes their musical numbers extremely impressive to watch, on many levels. Priscilla Squiers shines is the role of Mother Abbess, with soprano vocals that are perfect for all her solos. Cathy Cavender, Stacey Snyder, and Daisy Stott enhance the production in their respective roles of Sister Margaretta, Sister Berthe, and Sister Sophia. Vincent Fontenelli is convincing as Liesl's love interest Rolf. Elizabeth Czarsty and Robert Fontenelli also bring life to their roles as the housekeeper Frau Schmidt, and Franz, the Butler, respectively. Ensemble roles enhance this show, as well. Like the leads, the ensemble performers also appear to be having fun on stage, greatly enjoying being part of this phenomenal production. These cast members include Jacquelynn Matchen, Paul Matchen, Rachelle Matchen, Tyler Wolfson, Rachel Volpe, Dolly Conner, Melisa Garcia, Beth McGuire, Amanda Thomas, April Smith, Molly Tarnowski, and Renėe Browne. They make their roles count. Beyond the romantic love story between Captain Von Trapp and Maria, I feel that this show sends extremely positive messages that are just as relevant in modern America, as they were in 1938 Austria. In this show, those who put their trust in God and His love are portrayed as the good people, as they should be. Those who boldly take a stand for the righteous truth that they believe in and refuse to be corrupted or manipulated are portrayed as heroes and positive role models, which they are. Conversely, hostile regimes that infiltrate countries' governments and oppressively try to destroy national identities by controlling what the citizens can legally do, say, think, or even feel are portrayed as the villains, as they should be portrayed. Furthermore, those who conform to the demands of those hostile government regimes are viewed as sell-outs, traitors, and cowards, as they are. The boundaries are clear between right and wrong, between good and evil, and between courage and cowardice. The former things are extolled while the latter things are rebuked. Musicals at Richter follows the positive example set by this show in that they have chosen a beloved classic with positive messages, and have recruited a truly talented cast and crew to make this show thrive with excellence! It is so refreshing to see a theater company that has stuck true to themselves, true to their patrons, and true to what makes for excellent live entertainment. I highly recommend THE SOUND OF MUSIC which is scheduled to continue to run through August 6th. For times and tickets, please go to Tickets. Boeing (NYSE:BA) Stock Price Jumps as CEO Suddenly Resigns
Boeing (NYSE:BA) Stock Price Jumps as CEO Suddenly Resigns:
What a turbulent year it’s been for Boeing (NYSE:BA). The news that the aerospace giant has lost its CEO initially boosted its share price and comes after a drawn-out scandal over its 737 Max jets plus a botched space mission that played out over the weekend.
CEO Dennis Muilenburg resigned Monday, effective immediately. The firm swapped out its chairman, David Calhoun, as CEO and president, with Lawrence Kellner taking over board leadership. The market welcomed the potential for the troubled aviator to turn its fortunes around, with its share price immediately jumping almost 4%.
Boeing’s annus horribilis comes to an end
Monday’s press release was brief, with Kellner announcing: “On behalf of the entire board of directors, I am pleased that Dave has agreed to lead Boeing at this critical juncture. Dave has deep industry experience and a proven track record of strong leadership, and he recognizes the challenges we must confront.”
Highlighting the company’s awareness that a complete about-turn was required, Kellner added, “The board and I look forward to working with him and the rest of the Boeing team to ensure that today marks a new way forward for our company.”
Investors tend to dislike management changes, especially sudden ones, meaning that Boeing stock has the potential to decline over the holiday period, opening a possible value opportunity. Current investors with a long-range vision may want to tough it out, as Boeing claws back its reputation, however, while newcomers with little aviation or transportation exposure may want to buy a ticket.
As the company limps out of the year with a sudden leadership change, bargain investors could soon have an opportunity to add one of the world’s most recognized aerospace names to a value-focused portfolio light on transport stocks.
A strong play for space industry exposure
Though the Starliner capsule returned safely, its launch did not go as planned. An anomaly meant that the uncrewed spacecraft failed to dock with the International Space Station. The spacecraft was designed in partnership with NASA’s Commercial Crew Program in a string of industry partnerships that has helped buoy the partially event-driven trajectory of the company’s share price.
As a NASA partner, Boeing presents entry into a growth sector that has few big players at present. Rio Tinto and Virgin Galactic also offer investors a route to space industry exposure, with the world-class miner having floated plans for extraterrestrial mineral extraction, and the Richard Branson spinoff company offering a space tourism pure play.
Investors seeking another NASA connection should consider Maxar Technologies for its involvement in the rebooted crewed Moon program as well as upside potential from the new satellite maintenance industry.
The bottom line
As the 737 Max controversy played out, investors had patiently waited for improvement, with developments in the space segment of the aviator’s business offering some hope. If Boeing stock declines, newcomers to aviation and space industry stocks could have a value opportunity to buy into a company with ample room to improve under new leadership in the new year.
Fool contributor Victoria Hetherington has no position in any of the stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool owns shares of Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc. The Motley Fool recommends MAXAR TECHNOLOGIES LTD.

Ariadne in the Berkshires
by Barbara Waldinger
As the summer of 2018 draws to a close, with the BSO gone and Tanglewood showcasing pop singers, Berkshire classical music-lovers have something to cheer about: the Berkshire Opera Festival (BOF) has opened its second season with a magnificent production of Ariadne auf Naxos, conducted by Brian Garman (Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the BOF) and directed by Jonathon Loy (General Director and Co-Founder).
These two gentlemen are well-credentialed. Garman, conductor at the Seattle Opera and Music Director of their Young Artists Program, spent ten years as Resident Conductor and Chorus Master at Pittsburgh Opera and has conducted for the New York City Opera, while Loy is entering his ninth season as a Guest Director at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC, having previously served as General Director of Center City Opera Theater in Philadelphia. After a year auditioning and establishing the BOF Orchestra and Chorus, Garman and Loy mounted Madama Butterfly in 2016. Already cast for 2018: Rigoletto.
In accordance with their aim to explore work outside the “top ten” opera repertory, this summer Garman and Loy selected Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos with a German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal (with English supertitles by Cori Ellison), who was inspired by Moliere’s play, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. In the first, unsuccessful version of this entertainment, Hofmannsthal adapted Moliere’s play, replacing the final scene (a Turkish ceremony) with the new opera Ariadne auf Naxos. Unfortunately, that production, directed by Max Reinhardt in 1912, lasted six hours and was a fiasco. But in the second version, premiered in 1916, Moliere’s play was scrapped and Strauss created a Prologue, which is now the first act of Ariadne auf Naxos. Loy sets this unusual prologue in the present day, when the “richest man in Vienna,” invites both an opera company and a troupe of comedians to entertain his dinner guests, with fireworks following the presentations. However, when the meal lasts longer than planned, in order to allow time for the fireworks, he two companies are required to perform simultaneously.
This sounds chaotic. The opera company has prepared a serious new piece, Ariadne auf Naxos, which tells the tragic story of the mythological Ariadne, abandoned by her lover Theseus on the desert island of Naxos. How can this mesh with the slapstick, acrobatic, low-class popular amusement of the Commedia dell’arte –Italian improvisational theatre originating in the 16th century that greatly influenced Moliere? The young composer of the opera (Adriana Zabala in a trouser role) can barely contain his anger, despite the attempts of his music teacher (Kyle Pfortmiller) and the Commedia’s leading lady, Zerbinetta (Nicole Haslett), to convince him to make changes in the opera so as to work this out. Thus ends the first act, filled with comedy, hysteria and high dudgeon. The second act is the opera itself, during which the comedians appear on Naxos and do their best to cheer up the dying Ariadne (Marcy Stonikas).
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This mixture of low and high art is a tall order for an opera, presenting challenges for its composer and lyricist, conductor and musicians, actors, designers and director. Additionally, the orchestra and the performers share the stage of the Colonial Theatre, so that the performance space is only one-half the stage. Loy meets the challenge by using the multi-level stage vertically, rather than horizontally, so that the action makes use of the unadorned upstage area as well as the apron and the aisles. Assisted by chorographer Sara Erde, Loy recreates the physical comedy routines of the Commedia actors. Production elements undergo a complete change as the action moves from backstage in Act I to the opera proper in Act II. Costumes for the first act, designed by Charles Caine, include robes, sweats and even underwear as the actors prepare, contrasting with both the graceful and flowing pastel gowns worn by Ariadne and her lovely, mellifluous nymphs, and the colorful costumes and masks of the Commedia’s stock characters in the second act. (Even conductor Garman dons a jacket for the opera after working in shirtsleeves for the prologue). For Act II, which takes place in a cave, Scenic designer Stephen Dobay has created a gorgeous painted backdrop of stalactites and stalagmites, complete with twinkling stars and a hanging crescent moon, all lit to perfection by John Froelich. A similar metal frame flown in further downstage brings Ariadne on her rock as close to the audience as possible. Finally the orchestration evolves from a “play with music” that contains spoken words, to a melodious opera, beautifully played by only thirty-seven musicians.
The quality of the singing is astounding. Garman and Loy have assembled a dazzling cast, including the three brilliant leading female singers: Zabala as the composer, Haslett as Zerbinetta performing her amazing coloratura aria in the second act, and Stonikas as Ariadne.
The Prologue is great fun, though I found the role of the producer (Chuck Schwager), who announces the wishes of the wealthy patron, to be a bit jarring. Here we have the present day setting: he mocks Trump in New York-ese. Somehow the music master responds to him by singing in German!
The second act is slow-going and although the comedians’ antics are meant to liven things up, there is not much they can do, except tip-toe into this grave opera with their crazy antics (including a rubber chicken!) unseen by Ariadne and her nymphs. Only Zerbinetta, with her common sense approach, can explain Ariadne’s tragedy by letting us know that what the young woman needs is a new lover. Ironically, Zerbinetta turns out to be prescient, as the god Bacchus turns up, is immediately smitten, and escorts the equally lovestruck Ariadne to the heavens.
How fortunate that Garman and Loy have founded their company here in the Berkshires. No longer need we confine our opera-going to HD filmsnow we have the highest quality productions and performers in our own backyard.
Ariadne auf Naxos plays on August 26, 29, and September 1 at The Colonial Theatre. For tickets call 413-997-4444 or online at www.berkshireoperafestival.org
Berkshire Opera Festival presents Ariadne auf Naxos; Music by Richard Strauss; Libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Cast: Kyle Pfortmiller (a Music Teacher), Chuck Schwager (the Producer), John Demler (an Usher), Daniel Kringer (an Officer), Adriana Zabala (the Composer), Kevin Ray (the Tenor/Bacchus), Brandon Hetherington (a Wigmaker), Nicole Haslett (Zerbinetta), Spencer Viator (a Dancing Master/Brighella), Marcy Stonikas (the Prima Donna/Ariadne), Jeni Houser (Najade), Rebecca Ringle (Dryade),Christine Lyons (Echo),Samuel Schultz (Harlekin), Chris Carr (Scaramuccio), Matthew Scollin (Truffaldino). Conductor: Brian Garman, Director: Jonathon Loy; Scenic Designer: Stephen Dobay; Costume Designer: Charles Caine; Lighting Designer: John Froelich; Hair and Make-up Designer: Beckie Kravetz; Choreographer: Sara Erde; Stage Manager: Cindy Knight. Running Time: two hours 25 minutes, including intermission, at The Colonial Theatre, 111 South Street, Pittsfield, MA, from August 26, closing September 1.

Looking Back to Move Forward: Power Brokers Reflect on 2017
https://ift.tt/2lTvgli
In 2017, there were highs in housing, and hurdles. For the Power Brokers in RISMedia’s 30th Anniversary Power Broker Report & Survey, assessing both—what was good, and what was not-so-good—is an annual exercise, indispensable to their longevity and paramount to their success.
NEW! Get the digital, interactive ranking of RISMedia’s Top 500 Power Brokers.
When asked what factors impacted them the most in the past year, Power Brokers said:
[The biggest impact on business was] new technology. It’s improving the way we do business by increasing time management and allowing for better conversion rates and leads. The biggest struggle we faced was training our agent base to embrace and adopt technology. My fear is if they don’t get on board, they’ll be out of business. – Tipper Williams, Operating Principal, Keller Williams Virginia Realty Alliance Group, Richmond, Va.
This past year was the most intense market I’ve ever seen in my 41-year career. It was the sixth straight year of a frenzy market in Seattle. – Lennox Scott, Chairman & CEO, John L. Scott Real Estate, Seattle, Wash.
Business was strong in 2017. Inventory is low all over, which finally drove up prices in the Northeast. – Joe Rand, Managing Partner, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Rand Realty, Nanuet, N.Y.
We acquired Private Label Realty and grew our brokerage by about 200 new agents in 30 days. While it was a great move, we felt the impact of the growth. It bogged down our back-end office for a month or so, but it forced us to revisit our processes and improve our systems. – JP Piccinini, Founder & CEO, JP and Associates REALTORS®, Frisco, Texas
We had a significant lack of inventory in the entry and move-up price points. In the luxury market ($2 million and over), growing inventory and demand is definitely there, but there’s a disconnect between sellers’ and buyers’ expectations on value. – Rei Mesa, President, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Realty, Sunrise, Fla.
Our vibrant economy and employment market in California has resulted in record-setting job creation that’s outperforming new housing units by a factor of four to one, so demand is driving the equation. With interest rates near all-time lows throughout 2017 and [strong] consumer confidence, we’ve seen a positive impact on the state’s economy and housing market. – Mark McLaughlin, CEO, Pacific Union International, San Francisco, Calif.
In 2017, there was (and continues to be this year) recruiting pressure from virtually every model of real estate: traditional, flat-fee, technology-based, salaried agent, tiered commission, cap commission, etc. That downward pressure on commissions, along with the degradation of broker profitability, continues to challenge even the healthiest of brokerages. It’s uncertain if some of those models can sustain and thrive in a down market. – Todd Hetherington, Founder, Co-Owner & CEO, NM Management, Inc./CENTURY 21 New Millennium, Washington, D.C.
The very aggressive market we’re in has had a positive impact on business. We’re still seeing shortages in inventory, favorable interest rates and consumer engagement. – Felicia Hengle, Director of Ohio Operations, Coldwell Banker Schmidt Family of Companies, Strongsville, Ohio
Reduced levels of inventory. – Marti Hampton, Broker/Owner, RE/MAX One Realty, Raleigh, N.C.
RISMedia’s 2018 Power Broker Report & Survey is sponsored by American Home Shield, Homes.com, HSA Home Warranty, Leading Real Estate Companies of the World® and Pillar To Post Home Inspectors. The Power Broker Survey ranks brokerages by residential sales volume and transactions in 2017. The complete ranking of the Top 1,000 will be released shortly.

If your new year’s resolution was to keep abreast of some cool new music, you are probably already one step ahead of me.
But that’s where Loft is very educational, as we are the base for many a popstrel, both old and new.
Jungle magazine is gaining a reputation for showcasing the best in new talent and in issue 2, they feature the British singer Bishop Briggs.
Having reached commercial success with her blend of acoustic guitar, electronic beats and a bit of soul inspired trip hop. Last year’s single “River” got picked up by Coldplay’s management, and she opened up for nine of their tour dates last autumn.
Her ultra cool style, which was developed in her years living and studying in Tokyo as a teenager, means that she has also been noticed by fashion bible W magazine, with whom she released the official video for “Wild Horses” in December 2016.
Take a look at this face, there is no doubt you will be seeing alot more of those trademark buns! And if you are lucky enough to be going to Coachella where she is playing in April, please do not let me know!!

On the Agenda at RISMedia’s 2017 CEO Exchange: Predictive Analytics, Profitability and More – RisMedia.com (press release)
Over 225 of the most powerful and successful real estate leaders will take to New York City this September for RISMedia’s 2017 Real Estate CEO Exchange, “Growing Your Business in Unpredictable Times.” The exclusive, day-and-a-half-long event, taking place Sept. 12-13 at the prestigious Harvard Club, will share strategies for increasing business and operating a profitable company despite headwinds such as changing regulations, low inventory and student loan debt.
The event will offer insight from several of the industry’s most influential leaders, including an opening address from keynote speaker Ron Peltier, chairman and CEO of HomeServices of America, Inc., on the State of the Real Estate Union, and a fireside chat with John Peyton, president and CEO of Realogy Franchise Group.
On the agenda:
What Keeps You Up at Night? Overcoming Hurdles to Profitability Running a brokerage in today’s market is no easy task. From pressure on commissions to a shortage of inventory, company dollars are being squeezed.
In this session, panelists Tom Tognoli, president/CEO, Intero Real Estate; Candace Adams, president/CEO, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England, New York and Westchester Properties; and Pam O’Connor, president/CEO, Leading Real Estate Companies of the World®, will share what’s foremost on their minds and how they’re preparing their firms to overcome challenges.
A Better Crystal Ball: How to Leverage Predictive Analytics
Predictive analytics is changing the way businesses operate, providing new insights into consumer behavior on a seemingly daily basis.
In this session, panelists Jeremy Sicklick, co-founder/CEO, HouseCanary; Scott MacDonald, broker/owner/president, RE/MAX Gateway; Mark Choey, co-founder/CTO, Climb Real Estate; and John Murray, managing broker/president, Key Realty, will discuss what role predictive analytics will play in the real estate business, how to use it to your advantage, and how to avoid the pitfalls along the way.
The New Rules of Consumer Engagement
With today’s vast array of communication touch points—from Facebook to door-knocking—effectively engaging with clients on all levels presents a challenge.
In this session, learn how panelists Sherry Chris, president/CEO, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate LLC; Todd Hetherington, CEO, NM Management, Inc., CENTURY 21 New Millennium; Diane M. Ramirez, chairman/CEO, Halstead Real Estate; Matthew O’Connor, COO, Terrie O’Connor REALTORS®; and Joan Docktor, president, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach, REALTORS®, are generating leads, taking marketing efforts to the next level, and seeing real ROI with the right communication tools, systems and strategies for engagement.
The Evolution of the Real Estate Model: Are You Adapting Fast Enough? As brokers continue to refresh and revamp the tried and true approach to the real estate business, will your firm be able to keep up and compete?
In this session, find out from panelists David Tedesco, founder/managing partner/CEO, True North Companies/Realty Executives; Matt Widdows, founder/CEO, HomeSmart; Rob Lehman, chief revenue officer, Compass; Mark Stark, broker/owner/CEO, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nevada Properties and Arizona Properties; Errol Samuelson, chief industry development officer, Zillow Group; and Richard “Rick” Haase, president, Latter & Blum, Inc., how and why some firms are succeeding with a new approach to the standard real estate model, and whether or not your firm is at risk of being disrupted.
Agent Teams: How to Manage, Maximize and Mitigate Risk
Like it or not, agent teams are here to stay—and growing by the minute.
In this session, learn how panelists Rick Cunningham, owner/investor, Keller Williams Franchises; Lynn Reecer, president/CEO/managing broker, Reecer Properties; Peter Hunt, chairman/CEO/president, Hunt Real Estate Corp., Hunt Real Estate ERA; and Nate Martinez, co-owner, RE/MAX Professionals, are handling teams both financially and logistically to ensure they’re a boon to their business…not a liability.
The Verdict Is In: Agent Loyalty Is Out – Now What? Your top producers are your prized commodity, but is loyalty the end game? Are your retention efforts working and worth the investment?
In this session, hear from panelists Neil Cresswell, co-founder/president, Sellstate Realty Systems; Michael Mahon, president, First Team Real Estate; Penny Nathan, co-founder/president/CEO, Ascent Real Estate; Richard “Dicky” Mopper, broker/owner, Engel & Völkers Savannah; and Felicia Hengle, president, Ohio Operations, Coldwell Banker Hunter Realty, who are recruiting and maximizing their agent force to ensure profitability for all.
RISMedia will also be hosting a new networking opportunity for attendees: the CEO Exchange Welcome Dinner, a three-and-a-half-hour sunset tour around Lower Manhattan aboard the elite, private yacht Atlantica. Don’t miss this unforgettable experience with unparalleled views of New York City!

Against the backdrop of the National Press Club—”The Place Where News Happens”—RISMedia applauded the more than 230 Newsmakers recognized this year, as well as 10 Hall of Fame inductees. As each member of the 2019 Hall of Fame Class was inducted yesterday, they shared the following thoughts:
Gino Blefari, CEO, HomeServices of America
“This award here really could be ‘the shoulders of giants.’ I made a list of the shoulder of giants I’ve stood on, and some of you have probably stood on these same shoulders, [including] Tommy Hopkins, Mike Ferry…Og Mandino, Jim Rohn and Zig Ziglar…Brian Tracy, Allan Dalton, Bob Becker…Alain Pinel…Tom Ferry…Brian Buffini…Larry Kendall…Chris Stuart…and Ron Peltier, who gave me the opportunity to be the CEO of HSF Affiliates and now again as HomeServices of America. William E. Brown, Founder, Investment Properties; Co-Founder, Springhill Real Estate Partners
“I’m very blessed to be here as a second-generation REALTOR®. NAR is there to help our members make money in terms of controlling their finances as it relates to their investments, and fighting for our members on the Hill, and everywhere else. Thank you all for this evening.”

“This is the highest honor of my life. This isn’t about me; this is an acknowledgement from an industry powerhouse, and the news source that we trust, that safety is a real concern and a conversation worth having, and that people that have been victimized like my precious mom didn’t die in vain. Since losing my mom, I’ve been very blessed by the people in this room that have given me opportunities to talk to your staff and agents to say, be smart when you’re out there selling. I thank you for every opportunity.”
(Credit: AJ Canaria of PlanOmatic)
David Charron, President, MRIS Investors, Inc.
“As leaders, I believe that we have a collective responsibility to shepherd those that are inexperienced but have the right attitude, the smarts and the will. It’s up to us as leaders in the industry to help these folks find their voice, put them under a grow light and give them the opportunities to succeed, and occasionally fail, but always pick themselves up and move forward. It’s my hope that the future recipients of this award in the years to come will look back on the 2018 and 2019 recipients and Newsmakers and look to us and say ‘Thanks a lot. You helped me. You inspired me.’ I hope we pay it forward in that way today, tomorrow, and in the years to come.”
(Credit: AJ Canaria of PlanOmatic)
Todd Hetherington, CEO, CENTURY 21 New Millennium
“Normally Mary Lynn hates to get in front of the podium, and because of that in the last 20 years I’ve been the one that’s been getting the lion’s share of the limelight. I’m very pleased tonight that my business partner is the one that’s getting the limelight. Thank you.”
(Credit: AJ Canaria of PlanOmatic)
Rei Mesa, President/CEO, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Realty
“I am honored and humbled by this recognition. I am a very, very grateful individual that I get to do this, and get to do what I love and with people I love to do it with.”
Diane M. Ramirez, Chairman/CEO, Halstead
(Credit: AJ Canaria of PlanOmatic)
“To be among the people who are being acknowledged at all levels is truly an honor. This has been a great journey that I hope to continue doing for many, many years into the future. Leading Halstead and watching its growth from its birth and a vision of the East Side, West Side and Downtown of Manhattan to now having 38 offices and 1,300 agents and loving each and every one of them…I cannot tell you how much it means to me.”
(Credit: AJ Canaria of PlanOmatic)
Mike Ryan, Senior Advisor, RE/MAX, LLC
“Newsmakers this year, and future Newsmakers, I hope we have some open-mindedness about what’s happening today and cut through the noise. There’s a lot of new business plans and new technologies to help better the professionals in our industry. The best headlines are ahead for us today.”
(Credit: AJ Canaria of PlanOmatic)
Michael Saunders, Founder/CEO, Michael Saunders & Company
“As I look around this room, I see people that really have helped me become all that I am. I thank you, I thank everyone back in Sarasota that this honor goes to. Forty-three years ago, I never believed that my journey would lead me to this stage and in front of you. I am proud, I am humbled, and I am very, very thankful.”
(Credit: AJ Canaria of PlanOmatic)
Mary Lynn Stone, President, CENTURY 21 New Millennium
“I am honored and truly amazed to be standing here amongst all of you, being recognized as a leader in a room filled with absolutely some of the best of the best in our industry. I’ve always been very surprised at where life can take you. I assure you that when I was a student at the University of Maryland working part-time in my family’s real estate office, I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be standing here being honored and recognized as a leader and being inducted into this prestigious Hall of Fame of Newsmakers. Growing and building a company that gives opportunities to people and individuals to build careers where they are able to help families find a home that they could live and love each other in is a very, very honorable and rewarding profession. I hope this evening and the reason I’m standing on front of all of you is because of that, so thank you very much.”
The event was presented by Master Sponsors American Home Shield, HSA Home Warranty, Real Estate Webmasters and Realty ONE Group; Host Sponsors Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, HMS Home Warranty, PlanOmatic, Quicken Loans, Realtors Property Resource®, Sherri Johnson Coaching & Consulting and Updater; and Event Sponsors Adwerx, DocuSign, Local Logic, Pillar To Post Home Inspectors and RE/MAX LLC.

Power Brokers: Committing to Technology, Not Tunnel Vision
https://rismedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/DailyNews_041019.mp4
With all the chatter on disruption in the industry, Power Brokers are doubling down on their strengths—including digital marketing strategies and technology. On the agenda this year, according to RISMedia’s 2019 Power Broker Report, is investing in technology, the No. 3 area of focus, as well as digital marketing, at No. 4.
The end goal? Clearly communicate a message of professionalism and service—critical in an era when homebuyers and homeowners have options, not all on equal footing—and generate leads, both intelligently and seamlessly.
Augmenting What Works: Power Brokers Sound Off
“Recent technology upgrades company-wide help equip our agents with the ability to effortlessly access and deliver relevant market information.”
– Lacey M. Conway, President/Principal Broker, Latter & Blum Inc., No. 19 in transactions
“A market that is flat or down 3-4 percent does not create a lot of urgency for big change, so most will make small adjustments. Underlying the market settling down is the consumer shift to using all forms of technology; acquiring new clients from online sources will soon become one-third or more of the top agent’s lead gen. So, jumping on social media to ensure you have a deeper relationship with your clients is the best way of growing your business…and the least expensive.”
– Dan Elsea, President of Brokerage Services, Real Estate One Family of Companies, No. 11 in transactions
“One of the biggest challenges facing today’s real estate consumers is sifting through all the different offerings and models that exist throughout our marketplace. They’re looking for not just the ‘cheapest’ offering, but rather, the offering that will best meet their needs and represent them in their best interest.”
– Todd Hetherington, CEO of CENTURY 21 New Millennium, No. 55 in sales volume
“CBx is a game changer when it comes to winning and selling listings, and the Zap CRM Platform gives agents and their clients an interactive way to search for properties and maintain their relationship at the same time.”
– Felicia Hengle, President of Ohio Operations, Coldwell Banker Schmidt Family of Companies, No. 29 in transactions
“The real estate industry follows cycles and reacts according to the law of supply and demand. The real estate firm of today needs to be able to be nimble and adapt to change rapidly.”
– Alexander Karavasilis, President, RE/MAX Advantage Realty, No. 330 in sales volume
“The market today is so dynamic. There are new players, rates are up or down weekly, houses sell quickly or sit on the market with no activity, prices are rising in some areas while remaining flat in others. An agent today needs to know how to communicate their value by knowing how to speak to these issues, as well as others that are of concern to the consumer. This communication must be continuous and through multiple channels: video, emails, newsletters, phone calls and one-to-one meetings. The consumer today is inundated with information, but the knowledgeable agent can set themselves apart.”
– Scott MacDonald, Owner/President, RE/MAX Gateway, No. 394 in sales volume
“Organized real estate must work together to stay relevant and useful. MLS consolidations, data standards and interoperability between disparate systems should be our main focus in order to survive and thrive.”
– John Murray, President, Key Realty, No. 762 in transactions
“Dabbling and experimentation take a back seat to quality and proof of concept.”
– James O’Bryon, CEO, RE/MAX Gold | Olson & Associates, No. 13 in sales volume
“We are in interesting times in our industry with heavily funded entrants and business models looking to change the landscape of buying and selling homes. I believe many of the ventures are ill-conceived and will fail, but only time will answer what real estate will look like in five years.”
– Linda Schaefer, Executive, Select Group Real Estate, No. 84 in sales volume
“We all need to do the work. Fully leveraging automated, ‘state-of-the-art’ marketing tools and resources will demonstrate our professional acumen and keep us front of mind. Persistent follow-up via calls, personal visits, handwritten notes, etc., shows people that we truly care and are worthy of their trust and confidence.”
– Pat Shea, COO/President, Lyon Real Estate, No. 60 in sales volume
“Plug-and-play platforms that are designed specifically for our real estate model enhance our associates’ ability to run their business and allows them to focus on the individual needs of their client.”
– Tipper Williams, Operating Principal, Keller Williams Virginia Realty Alliance Group, No. 62 in sales volume
“With developments in AI and data analytics, technology will assist real estate agents so that they can focus on serving clients. Technology will also streamline the home-buying process for consumers. The agents who really integrate these products into their business will see the biggest impact. The key point is that the technology will empower agents, not replace them. In this tight market, it’s necessary for consumers to work with the best agents who have access to the best technology.”
– Charlie Young, CEO/President, Coldwell Banker Real Estate (NRT, No. 1 in sales volume)
RISMedia’s 2019 Power Broker Report is sponsored by American Home Shield, Homes.com, HSA Home Warranty, Leading Real Estate Companies of the World® and Pillar To Post Home Inspectors. The 2019 Power Broker Report ranks brokerages by residential sales volume and transactions in 2018. The complete ranking of the Top 1,000 will be released shortly, along with an interactive online Power Broker directory.

Power Brokers: As Competition Heats Up, Dollars Go to Growth
Faced with overlapping pressures this year, Power Brokers are approaching business with a combination of fortitude, grit and wariness.
According to RISMedia’s 2019 Power Broker Report, 59 percent of Power Brokers have a “cautiously optimistic” outlook—an increase from 52 percent in 2018, and driven by economic uncertainty. As capital flows into the industry and options proliferate, the agent and consumer experience remain priorities, with Power Brokers adapting these areas to compete and, ultimately, win.
With confidence levels shifting, they are leaning into two primary strategies: expansion through mergers and new offices (the No. 5 area of expenditure for Power Brokers); and recruitment (No. 1). Notably, 45 percent of Power Brokers are focused on new offices this year.
<a href=”https://rismedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2019_Power_Broker_Story_Survey-1.pdf”><img class=”aligncenter size-full wp-image-157781″ src=”https://ift.tt/2Udgiuz; alt=”” width=”540″ height=”40″ /></a>
A Careful Eye on the Future: Power Brokers Sound Off
“[Focus on] strategic planning, accountability, being consumer-centric and being completely dedicated to the success of each of your agents and in a way that provides the greatest value to the consumers and clients we serve.”
– Gino Blefari, CEO, HomeServices of America, No. 1 in transactions
“A ‘healthier’ inventory and days on market will reward those brokers and agents with sound business practices. I believe that many of the business practices that have flourished since the economic recovery will be heavily challenged as the market stabilizes. As the market shifts from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market, this creates tremendous opportunities for well-qualified buyers. The same can be said for brokerages and brands, who will find a greater inventory of companies to acquire. As part of Realogy, ERA is well capitalized to help our brokers search for and subsidize merger and acquisition activity. We have seen our M&A pipeline increase 2,000 percent year-over-year.”
– Simon Chen, CEO/President, ERA Real Estate
“Our surveys show that agents want the company focus to be on three main things: technology, training and marketing. We’re playing offense in all three areas, freeing agents up to do what they do best: working with clients, cultivating relationships and building their business. In technology, we’re rolling out an ecosystem of new, data-driven RE/MAX products this summer. In training, we’ve invested heavily in our exclusive Momentum professional development programs, which help brokers and agents systemize their operations. Our 2019 national marketing campaign, which has shifted more toward digital and social, includes a new tool that enables agents to create personally branded videos in less than a minute.”
– Adam Contos, CEO, RE/MAX, LLC
“Our market is tightening, which will open opportunities for us throughout New England to team up with solid companies and grow our agent and location base, as well as multiply our agents’ lead opportunities throughout our advanced lead generation systems.”
– Jim D’Amico, CEO/President, CENTURY 21 North East, No. 220 in sales volume
“I see a continuation of the strategy we’ve embraced for a while, which is making sure our agents are the best educated and best equipped to go out and work with the consumer. The consumer is very savvy with a lot of knowledge at their fingertips, and wants guidance and an expert.”
– Cheryl Eidinger-Taylor, CEO/President, ERA Key Realty Services (HUNT Real Estate Corporation ERA, No. 34 in transactions)
“Our growth plan involves a two-pronged approach: growing organically by consistently demonstrating our value proposition to top agents and top teams throughout our existing marketplace; and simultaneously merging in like-minded, like-cultured companies and top teams to complement our existing geographic footprint.”
– Todd Hetherington, CEO of CENTURY 21 New Millennium, No. 55 in sales volume
“It’s about strengthening our data and technologies in order to provide the best value for our clients. It’s about equipping our advisors with truly targeted marketing approaches and assets so that they’re able to take their businesses to the next level, and it’s about growing in our existing markets and in new markets in the right way, upholding the integrity and strength of our global brand. This means access to premium marketing materials and expertise to drive maximum exposure for each listing; cutting-edge technologies such as new, hyper-local and advisor-focused websites; and our proprietary Extensive Domestic & Global Exposure (EDGE) platform.”
– Anthony Hitt, CEO/President, Engel & Völkers Americas
“[Our objectives are] to recruit and select new and developing (two years or less in the industry) real estate professionals; to recruit and select productive agents now with competing firms; to grow through acquisition where opportunities may exist within our current six-region footprint and also into new markets/regions; and to be an effective generator of high-quality leads for our real estate professionals.”
– Peter F. Hunt, Chairman/CEO, HUNT Real Estate Corporation ERA, No. 34 in transactions
“Our biggest opportunity in 2019 will be identifying and executing on acquisitions and roll-ins. I believe there will continue to be consolidation in the marketplace, and we’ll be there to bring those brokerages and companies into our network.”
– Rei Mesa, CEO/President, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Realty (HomeServices of America, No. 1 in transactions)
“Looking ahead, [our goal] is to break away from the ‘sea of sameness’ space and to become the first true real estate brand for consumers and industry professionals.”
– Mike Miedler, CEO/President, Century 21 Real Estate
“Together, the brokerages will pursue a course of elegant and aggressive growth for 2019, including an open door for mergers of other independent brokerages—both RE/MAX and not. First and foremost, we will care for our existing agent populations, as they are the foundation for all intelligent growth.”
– James O’Bryon, CEO, RE/MAX Gold | Olson & Associates, No. 13 in sales volume
“We are going to open at least two offices and possibly a third in 2019. Two will be on the Jersey waterfront.”
– Charlie Oppler, COO, Prominent Properties Sotheby’s International Realty, No. 113 in sales volume
“We have rolled out a strong social media effort targeting producing associates. Also, our branch managers are contacting firms that have a strong selling owner and 5-20 associates for fold-in opportunities for their offices. Lastly, we have a targeted text, call and postcard campaign for new licensees.”
– Christina Pappas, District Sales Manager, The Keyes Company/Illustrated Properties, No. 28 in sales volume
