Honestly, I’m only taking summer courses cause I have to. I take a reduced course load during the fall/winter semesters because 5 classes is just way too much for me to juggle so I catch up in the summer! It sucks, but it’s all I can do to catch up. The class schedule is completely understandable!! We all gotta do what we gotta do. I’ve been doing part time for the last year and starting in the fall, I’m finally taking the leap into full time on my classes. Which is super exciting and kind of daunting. So hey, we’ll see how things end up going!!

AND YES YES YES THESE PHOTOS OF JAKE LITERALLY GET ME FROTHING. The beard. The hoodie. His SMILE. He looks. So comfortable and warm and safe in these pictures. God, he’s so gorgeous.

Finally, we have good news!! Two bits of good news, actually. Firstly, my copy of Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes just arrived today so look forward to some thoughts on that sometime soon. Second, I just watched Southpaw!! So strap in and prepare yourself for a mini review under the cut because I have THOUGHTS. For everyone else, spoilers for Southpaw ahead!! You have been warned!!

Genuinely…such a heartbreaking movie. And one that’s played so well by both Jake and Rachel?? I love Rachel McAdams in basically everything I see her in but the way she plays Maureen is just…so honest?? I’m a little underwhelmed that she has little character outside of being Billy’s cheerleader, but I definitely think Rachel makes every inch of this role work for her.

Jake brings such a special flavor to Billy too. I’m continually surprised how almost every role he’s been in in the last ten years…he’s an entirely different person. And he bodies it every. single. time. I swear, both Rachel and Jake absolutely killed this.

The most interesting part of this movie post-Maureen’s death is seeing the way that Billy’s relationship with his daughter changes?? Like that scene where Leila says that she wishes that Billy had died instead of Maureen??

I think it’s tragic, actually, just how instrumental Maureen was to both of them functioning. The way that Billy unconsciously still cites her rules (like her not wanting Leila to watch Billy’s fights) to Leila even though she’s no longer around to enforce them?? I think Billy’s arc is way more about him stepping up to actually be Leila’s father more than him building himself back up for that final fight.

I am so surprised that I was able to keep my emotions in until the very end when he wins the fight and has his head against a corner of the ring and is muttering, “I’m ready, baby.” I was full on crying by the time he was hugging Leila and telling her he was ready to go home.

Even though this isn’t my absolute favorite Jake movie, I see why it’s one that’s often credited as one of his great roles?? Like I see Billy Hope as a character that’s up there with David Loki and Lou Bloom as far as complexity and dimension goes for his characters. Overall, pretty solid film and I’m glad I finally watched it!! ☺️👍🏻

One thing I found interesting watching Southpaw for a fic I'm planning out is Miquel looks almost devastated when Maureen gets shot by his brother, he went from literally taunting Billy to being shocked what happened.

Blog Entry #2: Southpaw (2015): Billy “The Great” Hope: A True Underdog Turned Hero

One of the most popular Boxing films from the twentieth century is Southpaw (2015). To provide some context, this American Sports Drama Film written by Kurt Sutter stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy “The Great” Hope, Rachel McAdams as Billy’s wife Maureen, Oona Laurence as Billy and Maureen’s daughter Leila, and Forest Whittaker as Titus “Tick” Wills. The film follows the story of Billy and Leila as they struggle to change their lives for the better after the tragic death of Maureen during a shooting accident at a fundraiser event for Billy. Following this incident, Billy begins abusing alcohol and drugs, resulting in Leila being placed in the care of Child Protective Services. The Plugged In movie review article entitled Southpaw describes this film as one in which Billy’s only shot at redemption “Depends on unlearning his unhealthy dependence on anger- both in the ring and out. And doing so means learning to listen to an aging Boxing coach from the inner city who’s learned a thing or two about redemption himself”. Also, “After the shooting, Billy Hope is forced to answer one of life’s most serious questions: What do we do when we lose everything? Your family. Your career. Your passion for life itself”? In this entry, I will discuss the significant role Tick plays in allowing Billy to change his life for the better and reclaim his successful career. 

After the death of his wife Maureen, Billy begins abusing alcohol and drugs. One night,  he ends up crashing his car into a tree in front of his mansion. This results in Leila being placed in the care of Child Protective Services. When Billy goes to see Leila, she refuses to speak with him since she blames him for their current problems. After this happens, Billy visits the Wills Gym where he meets Titus “Tick” Wills, a former Boxer turned Boxing coach. He refuses to train Billy at first due to his alcohol and drug-related issues and the belief that he only wants revenge against Miguel Escobar, whose brother Hector killed his wife. However, he has a change of heart after witnessing the efforts Billy is willing to take to turn his life around. With the fight between Billy and Escobar scheduled to take place in six weeks, Tick begins rebuilding Billy into a Physically and Mentally tougher Boxer than he previously was. In relation to the highly aggressive nature of Boxing, the JSTOR article entitled The Two-Fisted Testing Ground of Manhood": Boxing and the Academy recounts the following: “In truth, Boxing is the final word of the dispossessed, the place where exploitation is the norm and dreams are traded for mumbles. A friend who covers prizefighting once told me that all boxers are crazy. I asked him why, immediately naming a dozen Boxers who seemed perfectly sane and beautifully articulate. “True”, he answered, “but you have to be crazy to box for a living”. Given the history and state of the sport I could not argue” (Roberts, 191). During the fight, Miguel temporarily causes Billy to lose his temper by insulting Maureen. However, he manages to control his anger with the help of Tick and takes control of the fight. In the last seconds, Billy shocks everyone by blocking Miguel’s jab and counters with a ferocious uppercut, sending Miguel falling to the mat. In the end, Billy is declared the new champion as he smiles tearfully and pays his respects to Maureen. Finally, Leila embraces Billy in the dressing room and tells him she loves him for the first time since Maureen’s death. In the final scene, the two leave ready to start a new life together. As stated within the JSTOR article entitled The Underdog Effect: The Marketing of Disadvantage and Determination through Brand Biography, “An underdog brand biography has two underlying dimensions- external disadvantage, and passion and determination- that jointly contribute to the positive underdog effect. Underdogs are therefore defined by both their personal characteristics and the external situation in which they find themselves” (Paharia, Keinan, Avery, Schor, 785).

Has Pe!reader met creepy Harvey Weinstein?

she did. she first met him when she was a kid in Spy Kids 2 and Spy Kids 3 since he was an executive producer, and then she met him again in 2012 because he was the EP of Silver Linings Playbook.

I feel like pe!reader has never liked him and always had a bad feeling about him considering that he made her very uncomfortable and also heard many stories from colleagues sharing the same feeling.

So in late 2014, she was offered the role of Maureen Hope in Southpaw but she turned it down because she felt off about being in a movie he was part of, especially after all the stories she had heard.

GOD THAT WAS GOOD I have like 3 major things to say (nothing spoiled that wasn’t in the trailer)

1. i super didn’t believe gyllenhaal as billy hope at first like even though i never shut up about his Range tm he still has that Pretty Boy image but the scene where maureen died really made me buy it. by the end i was so immersed in this character jesus god FUCK ok

2. this ain’t news but just. the physicality that he brings to his work is so so good to me. i am VERY interested in physicality in acting and you can so tell he is too. like obviously getting in that shape for the movie (or losing weight for nightcrawler) is an example but just. every SINGLE movement. every time EVERY time he held leila all i could think was FUCK he loves her so much. not because of the dialogue or the context just... the way he was doing it. & there was one scene that showed him walking from behind and for some reason it reminded me of that scene at the end of lincoln (2012) where he’s walking out to go to the play and how day lewis captured the exact gait of lincoln & just. obviously billy hope wasn’t a real person but gyllenhaal completely embodied him down to the way he walked.

3. this also ain’t news i just figured out a better way to articulate it: i was thinking about how i would describe this to someone and the initial instinct is “it’s a boxing movie” but it really isn’t at all? & it just put into perspective why i like the projects he chooses so much-- they’re never about things they’re about people. they’re always about people. or he makes them about people. and that’s what i care about i really couldn’t care less about the plot of anything i just want to watch characters exist in any space. and he does that it’s always so. DELICIOUS watching him work because no matter what the movie’s “about” you know you’re getting a refined and researched and completely embodied character. god. GOD. i love jake gyllenha

I’m so excited that we matched and I know that whatever you write, I will love!

I wanted to elaborate a bit on the fandoms and characters that I requested. Hopefully this is more helpful to you than it is confusing or overwhelming.

You’ve found my tumblr, so feel free to browse my tags where I tend to put my feelings. I’ll link specific tags below in each character name. You can also find my ao3 here.

First off, I spend a lot of time thinking about backstories for my favorite female characters, especially when said backstories are severely lacking in canon. I also have a tendency to headcanon my faves as bisexual/pan if they are not already queer in canon.

Generally speaking, I’m into girls and I’m into romance. I love a good mix of fluff, realistic conflict, domesticity, makeouts, and sex. (I use the rated-M/E search filters regularly, for what it’s worth.) Angst is great, too, as long as it ultimately leads to a happy or hopeful ending. Romcom tropes are definitely my jam. I especially love when my faves slow dance and hold hands. Do not feel the need to shy away from predictability. I also love reading about female friendships.

As for dislikes: I do not like reading about major character deaths - which I realize is ironic considering one of my requested fandoms - or love triangles. I don’t really have the patience to get through super slow-burn fic. I am also iffy about kidfic. I love a good surprise pregnancy fic that ends when they have the baby, or shortly after, but I don’t want to read exclusively about parenthood.

WIMBLEDON / Lizzie Bradbury

Wimbledon was my favorite romcom when I was a little teenager, and it still holds up for me. Every time I rewatch it as an adult, I think about how I wish I knew more about Lizzie Bradbury - both her history and her future after the movie fades to black (Peter’s voiceover was not enough!). Any story that mirrors the vibe of the movie and gives me more of Lizzie, I know I’ll love to pieces.

SOUTHPAW / Maureen Hope

Oh my god. I had a major obsession with this movie a couple of years ago. I was completely in love with Maureen Hope and the love that Billy Hope had for her. Obviously, in the movie Maureen dies a tragic death pretty early on, but you still feel her presence, her impact, until the end. This character stayed with me for a long time and I desperately wanted (and still want) to know more about her. She’s such a force and so loving and deserved the world. If you want to write an AU where she lives, I would love that. If you want to explore her adolescent/early adult years, particularly the events from this speech, I would love that. If you want to give me a glimpse into her relationship with Billy and Leila and expand on what we did see in the movie, I would love that. If you want to write something where she hooks up with a woman, I would love that. I’m game for pretty much anything as long as it’s about my girl Maureen Hope.

For a lot of people, Amelia is tough to love. I get that, but it’s also what I love about her. I love her difficult, complicated personality. I love her drive and her passion. I love her honesty and vulnerability. I would enjoy reading a character-driven story about Amelia that delves into her sexuality - because I wholeheartedly believe that she’s not straight - that also focuses on her friendship/sisterhood with Addison or with Charlotte. (And in my dreams, Amelia marries Arizona.)

SYNOPSIS.

this verse touches on the highest point of billy’s professional boxing career; as he is known by his boxing title, “billy ‘the great’ hope”. residing in the suburbs of new york with his ten year old daughter leila, and his wife maureen (MOHOPE). billy and his family live in a grand mansion that is protected by the privacy of security gates, and cameras as well as guards at the front of their drive way that scales largely. billy is the undefeated light heavyweight champion, and has yet to have lost a match in the ring.

ABILITIES TO INFLICT.

billy hope is in the up-most peak physical condition a male could be in. he also has a very bad temper, and the inability to calm down easily when aggravated. billy is very protective of his wife and daughter, and will not back down from a fight in or out of the ring if something crosses him, or his family.

billy can and will inflict harm on your muse if they choose to push him. he will only restrain himself if your muse is not another male. if your female muse chooses to aggravate billy, he will not keep his mouth shut; and rather than throwing a punch, he will not be very civil verbally towards her.

"Mr. Grey will see you now"…six simple words that launched a global phenomenon and ushered in a new era of "soccer mom porn". The series of films based on the book trilogy sparked the imaginations of women worldwide and gave them a new fantasy to dream about. It opened up a new sexual world for many and made BDSM a more main stream idea. As the third film heads to stores it's time to take the old whips and chains out for a spin and buckle up for an adventure in abusive relationships.

When we last left Christian (Jamie Dornan; The Fall) and Anastasia (Dakota Johnson; The Social Network) at the end of Fifty Shades Darker they had just managed to survive his psycho ex coming for an uninvited visit, his crash landing due to suspected foul play and the announcement of their engagement. As we begin chapter 3, the newlyweds are enjoying their honeymoon in Europe only to be interrupted by problems at work. When the server is hacked and blown up Christian finds himself investigating a new threat and being even more protective of Ana than ever before. Ana is also trying to navigate her new role as wife and editor at the company her husband owns.

As tensions heat up Christian must find out whois behind the threats before the game of cat and mouse becomes deadly. Meanwhile, Ana must figure out how to tell a skittish Christian that she is, in fact, pregnant - news he is not too excited about at first. He must grapple with his own fears of impending fatherhood since his start in life was less than stellar. Ultimately it is determined that a jealous Jack Hyde (Eric Johnson; Smallville) is the culprit who kidnaps Christian's sister, Mia (Rita Ora; Southpaw) and shoots Ana as she attempts a rescue effort. Of course, all's well that ends well.

Let's face it… this isn't Oscar-worthy acting we're talking about but I'm sure Dornan has some appeal to the largely female audience. His performance is less wooden than the past two film but still isn't all that much to write home about. Dakota Johnson is a little better as she displays more of a depth and range of emotions than her counterpart. The supporting cast are all fairly fine with an honorable mention for Eric Johnson and Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River)

The 4K Blu-ray has exceptional 2160p picture quality and the colors are strong and true. The red of the "torture chamber" a.k.a. the playroom is deep and rich while the blues of the Mediterranean Sea are cool and inviting. The DTS:X audio is superb and showcases the soundtrack. The dialogue is crisp and clean and sits nicely the center channel. The combo pack offers over an hour of extras including Deleted Scene, The Final Climax: 30+ Minutes, Behind-The-Scenes Featurette, Christian & Ana By Jamie & Dakota, An Intimate Conversation With E. L. James & Eric Johnson, and Music Videos. The second and third features are by far the most interesting.

This film series definitely has a target audience and probably won't appeal the male, nerdy, superhero sect. Having said that it knows who it is made for and does a decent job of sucking in the 30 something housewife/mom who dreams of a day without carpools and PTO meetings. This third installment is probably the best of the three with more plot and character development that the former two.

If you read the books (and let's face it… probably still own them) and you bought movies one and two (Fifty Shades and Fifty Shades Darker), then you definitely want to add this third one to your collection and if you are going to buy it you might as well go big and splurge for the 4K version.
