This is what an erupting volcano looks like from space.
📽: NASA Johnson
—
A fortuitous orbit of the International Space Station allowed the astronauts this striking view of Sarychev Volcano (Kuril Islands, northeast from Hokkaido in Japan to Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia) in an early stage of eruption on 12 June 2009.
Sarychev Peak is one of the most active volcanoes in the Kuril Island chain, and it is located on the northwestern end of Matua Island.
Prior to June 12, the last explosive eruption occurred in 1989, with eruptions in 1986, 1976, 1954, and 1946 also producing lava flows.
Ash from the multi-day eruption has been detected 2,407 kilometers east-southeast and 926 kilometers west-northwest of the volcano.
Commercial airline flights are being diverted away from the region to minimize the danger of engine failures from ash intake.
This detailed astronaut photograph is exciting to volcanologists because it captures several phenomena that occur during the earliest stages of an explosive volcanic eruption.
The main column is one of a series of plumes that rose above Matua Island on June 12.
The plume appears to be a combination of brown ash and white steam. The vigorously rising plume gives the steam a bubble-like appearance.
In contrast, the smooth white cloud on top may be water condensation that resulted from rapid rising and cooling of the air mass above the ash column.
This cloud, which meteorologists call a pileus cloud, is probably a transient feature: the eruption plume is starting to punch through.
The structure also indicates that little to no shearing wind was present at the time to disrupt the plume.
(Satellite images acquired 2-3 days after the start of activity illustrate the effect of shearing winds on the spread of the ash plumes across the Pacific Ocean.)
By contrast, a cloud of denser, gray ash — probably a pyroclastic flow — appears to be hugging the ground, descending from the volcano summit.
The rising eruption plume casts a shadow to the northwest of the island.
Brown ash at a lower altitude of the atmosphere spreads out above the ground at image lower left.
Low-level stratus clouds approach Matua Island from the east, wrapping around the lower slopes of the volcano.
Only about 1.5 kilometers of the coastline of Matua Island are visible beneath the clouds and ash.

You know what? Given everything Australian and nearby, I kinda wished H2O explored the possibility of traveling to New Zealand and meeting a mermaid there.
Here's my logic: The rock responsible for the moon cave and moon crystals was so enormous that not only did it create the moon pool in Mako Island, it had several pieces or shards that broke apart all over the world as we come to know from Bella Hartley after she was changed in the Sea Caves of Ireland. So geographically, New Zealand is the closest to Australia and even closer to Mako Island (while fictional, I believe was an inspired combination of Tasmania and Matua Island in shape & landscapes). So wouldn't it be possible there's a sister moon pool in New Zealand somewhere? Even more - like the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen - in Napier, the North Island of New Zealand, they have their own mermaid of Maori mythology called Pania of the Reef.
(And given the lore surrounding her, Mako Mermaids fans can easily deduce Pania was an ancient, natural mermaid who fell in love with a human. However, unlike the Chinese Mermaid whose lover got turned into the Water Dragon, there's no happy ending because HE WAS AN IDIOT!)
So, logistically, could we have a New Zealander (a Maori to boot) who either got turned into a mermaid or knows something about mermaids?

Frozen Assets
Chapter 2: Following Leads
Nikila listened to the echoes her feet made with the cold cobbled stone as she paced along the stronghold's Wall of History. Her steps made for an easy rhythm to tap her chisel to as she scribed her experiences into the tablet she held. The reverberations that resulted soothed her, wrapping around her in a warmth that reminded her of Vinik, who was elsewhere in the fortress.
The approach was three pronged, like the trident on her back: she would gather information from Matua, Les would go talk to the Archivist about records, and Vinny would see if the other members of the Fortress had heard anything. Simple. Unfortunately, the Toa of the Green was being cagey with her. Nikila figured this was somehow payback for earlier. It wasn't her fault she could bite with the best of them. And now it was biting her back. The Toa had been jumping through niceties and hoops for almost an hour before she felt confident enough to start digging deeper.
“So all of this is Brotherhood approved?” she asked cautiously.
Matua nodded. “They had final say over every letter sent over here, including how to transcribe the Wall. Of course, our additions have to stick to their standards as well but I assume you knew that to be a given.”
Makes sense. “You can't go easy on my parts?” She had built up a decent rapport with the Toa of Plantlife. If she didn't shoot her shot now, she might never get to act on her hunch again. “Do they have a centralized repository at their headquarters, then? They must get regular updates from their territories often.”
Matua smiled without looking back at the other Toa. “I wouldn't do that if I were you. Not a soul but their chosen few know the location of the organization's nest. I suspect it's actually multiple places to keep a close eye on strategic hot spots.”
Now there's an interesting word choice, comparing them to Rahi, intentionally or otherwise. “Is there a reason they dropped a fortress in one without such qualities?” Nikila looked around, not only to scan the depressing architecture but to help her observation land should Matua look back. “Kind of the middle of nowhere. Cold as an Ice Bat, too.”
“The Brotherhood's foresight is beyond my own, I suppose. They are guardians of the Known Lands just as we are, and have a wealth of information. Information they would gladly give if one were to ask for, nicely.”
Nikila backpedaled without breaking stride. “Of course. The issue is simply where to start looking for their aid. We've been searching for our Matoran across the Silver Sea for millennia now and have yet to find a representative of theirs anywhere.”
“From what I've heard, you've been dotting along islets and the coasts; Makuta tend to oversee the larger islands and the centers of the continents. I can send a missive to the South. It will take a while to get to its heart but I know a few Brotherhood agents there personally. I can vouch for them, and you to them.” A moment's pause. “I think Flail and Mace are talking Vinik's ears off right now; they'd really appreciate his stories, from what you've told me.”
Nikila quickly lowered her rising finger, her follow-up clenched in her throat. Aw Karzahni, he clammed. Time for damage control. “His mind is a Protosteel trap for yarn but his ear for concrete detail could use some work. Plus, he prefers the spoken word. He'd probably be bored out of his gourd carving all this prose.” Her work was in shorthand, of course. She didn't know how long she had. Matua is smart enough to figure it out when it was to be reported, right?
The ceiling shook with an armor rattling boom, dust sprinkling down upon the two Toa. Nikila bolted down the corridor, her tablet and chisel clattering on the floor. Matua stole a glance at the symbols on the newly chipped stone, a single word in the sea of letters searing into the warrior's mind as he followed to investigate the commotion:
Madness.
----
Lesovikk sighed. “So that's a no to Idris and Sarda, then?”
“Eeyup.”
“And of Cordak?”
“Only bits and pieces here and there. There hasn't been anything since the island was abandoned. At least, nothing official. There was never a Makuta assigned to it, so the Brotherhood effectively knows nothing.”
The Toa clenched his fist, disheartened. Just this once, he hoped to not feel like a hound yanked by its chain through the mud of an aloof world. Were the former defenders of Cordak chasing their tails as the time's arrow left them behind, leaving only dust and echoes in its accursed wake? The chill of the fortress basement was nothing compared to the despair that ran through his body. A frozen waterfall in his sinking stomach. “Karzahni.”
“Not there either.”
The offhand comment from the Archivist snapped Les out of his depressed stupor. He stop to ponder the possibility, however small. “You… have information regarding Karzahni?”
“From only a handful of anecdotes, yes. Three, to be precise, from deep in the Southern Continent. One of Mutran's scribes took what was regarded as firsthand accounts from a Le-Matoran named– ”
A razor-thin chance, along with decades of annoyance and begrudging respect, took hold of Lesovikk's autonomic nervous system; he blurted without thought. “Defilak!? That hot-headed– if any Matoran could saunter out of Hell, it would be him.”
The sudden volume from the usually quiet Toa startled the Archivist, almost enough to not question about the outburst. Almost. “How did you know…” The realization hit the registrar like a ton of the tablets she often worked with. Three deviant Toa looking for lost Matoran. And this one just asked about Cordak. The Archivist's wings sagged with the weight of the realization before her curiosity beat out her bout of melancholy. “So that's why Matua allowed you in here. Was he one of yours?”
Lesovikk would have continued with his tirade but the words fizzled out upon contact with the inquiry. “Yes,” he replied, curtly. “He is still my charge, despite the unwanted criticisms.” The Toa decided to take a play out of his Brother's book and pivot to something more lighthearted.
“Can you believe there are Matoran out there that can hear about our exploits and think 'yes, but you could have done this'? Defilak is one of those. Like he has it in him to become a great Toa-hero.”
He paused; Les hadn't used chutespeak in millennia. Defilak liked how it sounded, so he taught every other Le-Matoran on the island how to use the strange syntax. Or tried, at least.
“I didn't realize you've been to Metru Nui,” said the Archivist.
“Not I. Defilak claimed that knowing how to speak other dialects of Matoran would help me more effectively communicate with foreign powers.” Lesovikk chuckled softly despite himself. “Your local Trader visits the City of Legends twice and he thinks he can change a whole island.”
“Hmm, a headstrong Le-Matoran with the instincts of a Kavinika,” remarked the registrar. “I can see how he would last this long.”
Lesovikk reflected on the insinuation. Some breeds of the wolf-like Rahi were said to never let go once they bit down on their prey. Of course the two butted heads before the Turaga went mad: they were reflections of each other: loyal, territorial beasts that knew what was best for the pack. The Toa was about to respond when the Archivist preempted an apology.
“Sorry for the snark; I get cranky when I'm cooped up down here too long.” She experimentally flexed her wings and stretched her arms above her head. A few stray feathers brushed the sides of the cobblestone walls when an explosion rocked the chamber, unleashing a cloud of dust from the floor above. The Archivist recoiled, pinning her wings to the side to reduce her profile. “I didn't do that, right?”
Lesovikk's mask glowed as he tapped into the Kavinika's heightened hearing. “I have a nasty feeling that our unwelcome guests have returned.”
----
“And that's how we almost fought a Rock Lion,” Vinik concluded, wrapping up his tale. He gave his audience of two a glance, his mask screaming for a reaction without a sound.
“Wow,” muttered Mace in quiet awe. “Somehow the avoidance of conflict was more engaging than the urge to engage with and the results of the conflict itself.”
Flail nodded sagely in agreement. “I liked the part where they didn't hurt the big, loud kitty more. That would have been mean and bad.”
“Have you ever had that kind of experience?” Vinik pondered aloud. “Where you knew you had to help out in a dire situation, to help a creature in need despite the danger or costs involved?”
“When the heart of an island is on the line?" A young Toa of Fire hopped off a stack of supplies in the corner and approached the conversation. "Of course.”
Flail smiled and waved. “Oh hey, Hover! Glad you made it through the fight from before.”
Mace frowned and lightly elbowed their comrade in the side. “Toa Lhikan has been with us for almost a year, now. I do believe his name should be used more often when he is spoken to.”
An understanding expression graced the bright yellow mask of the rookie. “It's fine, Mace, really. They have a hard time with names. It's why you adopted the convention as well, right?”
The other Toa stared daggers at the observation, readying a retort, but they relented. “Astute as always.”
“See? I told you Hover likes it. It's much better than Greatswords. Too long, and doesn't sound as good.”
Vinik didn't hear this latest back and forth; he was too busy reminiscing about the previous members of the Toa Cordak. They were all very much like this in the beginning: a disparate group of warriors that could compliment each other one moment and grind each other's gears the next. It did take a few hundred years to smooth out the real contentious parts of the team, but when they used their different strengths to bolster the whole, they were a force to be reckoned with. Did Destiny hold this in store for these Toa as well? Tragedy was an inescapable truth of the title but would it reforge them into stronger stuff? Only time would tell.
Vinik was shaken back to reality.
“Hey Gauntlet, you okay?” Flail asked worriedly. They laid a massive, gentle hand on the Toa's shoulder. “Didn't you see my hand waving in front of your face?”
Vinik blinked a few times before responding. “Apologies, my Sibling, I was lost in thought. You reminded me of… friends of mine, who I knew long ago–”
The wall opposite of the group burst open with a great cacophony, spraying debris into the chamber and nearly knocking its occupants to the ground. A stray rock struck Mace in the head; they crumpled over into a newly formed heap of Protosteel. Vinik cursed and extended the claws on his gauntlet, their blades shining in the newly lit room. “Come no closer, demon, lest you face the wrath of a Fortress of Toa!”
Three figures stepped through the crooked gash: two with grins as wicked as Vinik's claws, and the other towering over them both. “We are here for the Stone,” said the imposing blue and gold figure. “Relinquish it or die.”

First Sentence tag game
I was tagged by @talesofsorrowandofruin as my alternate persona @islanded-in-a-stream-of-stars, but to save my two followers on that blog, I’ll keep my writing stuff here, so only you guys have to suffer through it!! ;p Rules: share the first sentence of your last ten fics. If you haven't written ten fics, share as many first sentences as you have.
Tagging folk who may wish to join, but as always no pressure, and if you happen to stumble across this and want to join, please do! But tag me so I can read your amazing stuff!! @sarahlizziewrites @thecatsgrave @bethtriestowrite @akiwitch @arigalefantasynovels @words-after-midnight
I’ll put the sentences below the cut and trigger warning for mentions of d*ath and implied violence/threat
Memento Mori Part I: Mors Immatura
‘I knew that I shouldn’t have looked’
Memento Mori Part II: Summun Nec Matuas Diem Nec Optes
‘The fly crawled over the cloudy eye of the corpse, stopping on the pupil and rubbing its grubby little hands together.’
Memento Mori Part III: Sit Tua Terra Levis
‘ The light was blinding as I managed to clear the last of the dirt from my eyes.’
Memento Mori Part IV: Memoria De Valens Vivat Tamque Vestri “Whelp,” Jeremiah stood up, and using the thumb of his left hand to tilt back the brim of his stetson hat, hocked a wad of chewing tobacco into the sand. “It’s definitely not a coyote.”
(I know this is technically two sentences, but I like to live dangerously when it comes to tag game rules ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
Tabula Rasa (a small one shot flash fiction that I set in the MM universe)
‘I took a deep breath, attempting to steel my nerves.’
Searching for Starlight:
‘Rashmi gripped Osias’ hand as they ran, trying not to think on the twin pistols that were trained on her back.’
New Unnamed WIP:
‘I didn’t feel pain; only the impact as the bullet lodged itself into my left shoulder.’
**Quick side note- the last three fics are from a fantasy trilogy that I started to write when I was a teen (so 20+ years ago <.<) and never finished. I had to dig into the archive to get them!! I read a little of them, and I they weren’t as bad as I thought they’d be. Like, they still make me cringe a bit, as I definitely didn’t understand the whole ‘show, don’t tell’ of story telling! But maybe I’ll pick them up and do a rewrite at some point! **
Redemption:
‘A small flurry of snow fell, and Gristle pulled his collar tighter.’
Justice:
‘ He ran wildly through the forest, straining to hear the sounds of pursuit.’
Honour:
‘The Great Wyrm, one of the Oldest Ethereal Beings, glided through the Nothing, feasting upon starlight, until she came upon the area of Nothingness that belonged to Iseofa, known to Man as the Creator.’

#2441 - Amphipsalta zelandica - Chorus Cicada
AKA Cicada zelandica, zealandica and zeylandica, Cicadetta zealandica, Melampsalta zelandica and Amphipsalta zealandica, kihikihi wawa, matua kihikihi or ngengeti.
New Zealand's most common cicada, although it and the other two in the genus are probably derived from a species that arrived on the islands in the last few million years.
The males produce their call in unison, which can reach deafening proportions by the end of summer - when @purrdence and I were driving west across the South Island a few weeks after this photo, the volume was painful, even through closed car windows. Groups of cicada can suddenly transition from the typical cicada sound to synchronised clicks, using their wings to clap against whatever they're sitting on.
Adults and nymphs both feed on sap, but its egg-laying that does the most damage to plants, as the female cuts a herringbone pattern of slits into bark with her ovopositor, laying up to 300 eggs. This can weaken the branch sufficiently that it snaps off in strong wind. The lifecycle may take up to 5 years - New Zealand lacks any very long-lived cicadas similar to the famous Periodical Magicicada species found in north America.
Their eggs are often parasitised by the minute Mymarid wasp Idiocentrus minus. Larvae of ground beetles have been recorded feeding on nymphs, and birds (especially the introduced house sparrow) eat large numbers of adults. The fungus Isaria sinclairii kills nymphs and converts their body contents to a solid mass of white fungal tissue.
One Māori haka and folk song, Te Tarakihi is based on the shrill summer-singing of the cicada.
Puritutu Rock, New Plymouth, New Zealand.

Sarychev Peak is located on Matua Island in the Kuril Islands of Russia. When the volcano erupted on June 11, 2009, the expulsion of debris caused significant interruption to air traffic between east Asia and North America. The eruption was also so great that astronauts aboard the International Space Station were able to photograph the plumes of ash and smoke rising from its cone, as the force of its shock waves dispersed all clouds covering the area.

Sarychev Peak in the early stages of eruption in the Kuril Islands (Russia, June 12th, 2009). Photo taken from the International Space Station.
Sarychev Peak is located on the north-western end of Matua, an uninhabited volcanic island near the centre of the Kuril Islands chain north-east of Japan. The eruption sent a plume of brown-coloured ash and white steam rising into the atmosphere, and the plume was so intense that it cast a large shadow on the island.
Sarychev is one of the most active volcanoes in the Kuril Islands. Before June 2009, its most explosive eruption was in 1989; its eruptions in 1986, 1976, 1954 and 1946 also produced lava flows.

On the 12th of June, 2009, Sarychev Peak on Matua Island in the Kuril chain erupted and was captured by the International Space Station as it flew overhead.. This awesome image reveals some cool details about the eruption. As you can clearly see, the volcanic plume extends high into the sky. If you look closer, you will note the atmospheric shockwave of the eruption; pushing the clouds back causing a ring shape to develop. Also visible is a smooth, fluffy white cloud on top of the rapidly rising ash column, likely the result of rapidly rising water vapour condensing on top of the plume.

Diving & Diving Tours New Zealand
From here we offer excellent boat tours and dive trips to the world famous Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve. Depending on the season it is also possible to cast your fishing rod on a deep sea fishing trip. Are you the owner or manager of this company? Claim your entry free of charge to z. We were warmly welcomed by Robyn, a nice older lady, and she explained the apartment to us. It was a bit outdated, but still clean, well furnished and comfortable. It consisted of a huge living room/kitchen area with everything you needed, two bedrooms and a spacious bathroom. Since Cape Reinga is a holy place for the Maori, eating at Cape Reinga is not allowed.
Sail around the Coromandel Peninsula
At some places you can stay one night for free. Usually this applies to campers and vehicles. But there are also some stages where you can pitch your tent. But this place is windy and uncomfortable. The way leads over quite lonely small roads. It goes over meadows and towards an offshore cape. Many steep steps lead down to the sea. Oh dear, just as far we have to climb up again on the other side. But the view to the small bay is fantastically beautiful. Only a narrow steep row of rocks separates the sea from our anchor bay and the hill with the lighthouse from us.
The history of Northland is rich and interesting.

I swim with the swimming goggles over to Goat Island.the coast of Tutukaka are the Poor Knights Islands. You can listen to Aboriginal legends and songs. MÄori guides take visitors on a very special journey to Tane Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere. This includes Tane Mahuta (the god of the forest), the world's largest kauri, who is estimated to be around 1,400 years old. A guided night hike through the forest is a unique experience. After 4 days of sailing from morning to night we finally have a day where we don't have to go anywhere. Christchurch's beach in the extreme east is Highcliffe. It is very popular with children and adults because it offers best conditions for bodyboarding and swimming.
This is also the case with the marine reserve of the Poor Knights Islands, 24 km off the coast of Tutukaka. The current brings a unique mixture of 125 different subtropical fish species. Whether small or big, with a pinch of luck there is always a surprise or two. Read more about campervan hire New Zealand here.
