Matt Taylor was born in Brisbane in 1948. He grew up in a working-class family in the suburb of Spring Hill. His father, who had emigrated from Liverpool, was a tram-driver. Taylor began listening to blues records in high school and taught himself the guitar and harmonica. In February 1966 he joined the Bay City Union, one of Australia’s first electric blues bands. They moved to Melbourne in December 1966 and achieved some success playing in dance halls and clubs. They recorded a single "Mo’reen" and "Mary Mary" released on the Festival label in 1968. Among the other members of this band was Glenn Wheatley, who was also their manager. The Bay City Union broke up in May 1968. Taylor joined the Wild Cherries in October 1968, but left the following month. During 1969 and 1970, he played with progressive heavy rock / blues bands Horse and Genesis. From September 1970 to October 1971, Taylor was the frontman for the blues band Chain, which had a hit single "Black and Blue" and album 'Toward the Blues' during this period. He then quit the music industry and went to live on a commune led by Fred and Mary Robinson at Beechworth. In 1973 he returned to the music scene as a solo artist, releasing three albums over the next three years, and scoring a major hit with the single "I Remember When I Was Young". He was one of the first artists to record for Mushroom Records and was managed by Michael Gudinski. He moved to Balingup, Western Australia, in 1975, to re-join the Robinsons in a new commune, but was eventually expelled after serious disagreements emerged. He then formed a new band, Western Flyer, with a more country-flavoured sound. Western Flyer produced two albums and had some success between 1977 and 1979. Since 1976, Taylor has lived in Perth, Western Australia. He has continued to tour and has played with a wide range of Australian artists, including Phil Manning, Dave Hole, Lucky Oceans, Broderick Smith, Lobby Loyde and Greg Lawrie. He has supported major American blues artists like B.B. King, Albert King, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon, Albert Collins. Albert Collins said of him: “You play the blues, but it’s like no other blues I’ve ever heard in my life”. In May 2010 Taylor was inducted into the WAM Hall of Fame.....~

One of Australia's best known guitarists, Phil has a single handedly turned more Australians onto the Blues than any other performer. The grandson of a dedicated Tasmanian bandleader, Phil grew up with music in his genes. From his earliest days backing pop artists and throughout his long career, his musical integrity has always set him apart. Many Australians know him as a member of Chain, the legendary blues band whose contribution to Australian music and the development of the blues in this country is unparalleled. Since the mid seventies Phil has forged a brilliant solo career for himself. He has featured at all the major festivals and venues throughout the country, and the list of international artists he has toured with, performed alongside or recorded with is impressive. This experience spans three decades at the top of his field. His skillful touch and great passion for the blues have kept him musically progressive, always prepared to interest himself in new musical ideas whilst maintaining his stylistic purpose. The result is a gifted songwriter with an awesome guitar technique. His latest CD ‘Out Of My Shed’ is an indicative album of where Phil is musically today. Distilling influences such as Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Doc Watson and Celtic sounds into his original style ensures a sound that is timeless and contemporary. His use of a range of acoustic guitars in both slide and fingerpicking styles emphasises his skill at covering a full range of acoustic blues. There are at least two bands performing under the name Chain: 1) Over 40 musicians have been a member of Chain, one of Australia's premier blues bands that has been going strong for over three decades. Formed from the remnants of Perth band the Beaten Tracks in 1968, the Chain were named by singer Wendy Saddington after the classic soul track "Chain of Fools." Saddington soon left and the band released one of Australia's first progressive blues singles, "Show Me Home," in 1969. Soon after, the Chain shortened their moniker to Chain. In June 1970, Chain recorded the classic live album, Live Chain, at Caesar's Palace discotheque, and along with other Australian acts like Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Carson, and the Adderley Smith Blues Band, were considered at the forefront of the Australian blues movement. Signing a new deal with Infinity, the blues subsidiary of Festival, Chain released the single "Black and Blue," which reached number ten on the national charts in May 1971. The classic album Toward the Blues peaked at number six in 1971 and is considered one of Australia's greatest blues albums. The follow-up single, "Judgement," established Chain as the nation's leading progressive blues band. Chain Live Again was released in October 1972 and Chain went on to appear at the first Sunbury Festival in January 1972. In 1973, the band singed with the new Mushroom label and issued the Two of a Kind album. Chain's rotating lineup broke up in 1974 and Mushroom issued the retrospective History of Chain album. Six years later, interest in Chain was still strong and they played at the Mushroom Evolution Concert in January 1982 to celebrate Mushroom's tenth anniversary. They re-formed permanently in 1983 and released Child of the Street in October 1985. Their next album, Australian Rhythm and Blues, was released in April 1988, followed by Blue Metal in May 1990. Several members undertook a tour of Australia in 1991 as Blues Power, while another member, Matt Taylor, toured as Matt Taylor's Chain, who released the album Walls 2 McGoo (Trouble in the Wind) in 1992. The original Chain again undertook a national tour in 1995. ~ Brendan Swift, All Music Guide 2) Chain is a progressive rock/metal band that was formed by German keyboardist Stephan Kernbach in 1995. Its original line-up consisted of Stephan Kernbach, Henning Pauly (guitars), CHRISTIAN BECKER (bass) and Thorsten Hannig (drums). They rehearsed for a full year without a vocalist and then broke up in 1996 because no suitable frontman could be found.

In 2002 Henning re-discovered the material that was recorded in the practice room during a rehearsal. The recording that was made with only a single mic was good enough so that he could sit down and figure out the parts and he got to work on re-working the songs and recording them in his California studio. He left his former bandmates in the dark about this in order to surprise them when he was going to visit his parents the following christmas. Once all the music was recorded he employed the services of his friend, the songwriter Matt Cash who became Chain's long missing frontman. Henning burned 10 copies of the CD, printed some booklets and headed home for christmas where the CD indeed surprised his old friends and revived old friendships. None of them knew, Henning included, that anyone but them would be interested in this music. Well, ProgRock Records was and offered them a deal which would lead to far more than just selling Reconstruct. Their second album chain.exe has special guest performances by Saga's vocalist Michael Sadler (who is singing the classic Saga song Hot to Cold), Mike Keneally (who does a guitar solo and sings on Last Chance to See), TSO's Jody Ashworth, Steve Katsikas (saxophone solo on Cities), sean andrews (stunt bass on Eama Hut), Victoria Trevithick, Maya Haddi and Edward Heppenstall. The band's first drummer Thorsten Hannig was not interested in continuing to work in progressive rock so the drums are now recorded by Eddie Marvin (Henning's brother). They currently have no plan on doing any live gigs. Stephan Kernbach and CHRISTIAN BECKER are currently members of the German progressive group Transmission, Henning Pauly has several projects going on, including Frameshift (featuring guest vocalists James LaBrie and Sebastian Bach) and his solo albums and Matt Cash also has solo albums to his credit.....all about jazz......~
