Lima 1 Ch QF: Juan Manuel Cerundolo [1] def. Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Despite a slow start to the match, as well as the clash between a more peaking version of M. Pucinelli de Almeida in this match, Juanma still stayed solid while trying to maintain his balance from his passes and net games. This way, even though the unseeded Brazilian had a similar capability as evident in the second set, it all came down to the important points on their return, where their shot winners also played significant parts of the match and how they closed things out. As such, even though both players broke thrice throughout the match, Juanma generated more break points than M. Pucinelli de Almeida (14 to 6) thanks to his more attacking play.
Apparently, there was a tiny difference between both players on their service games. While both Juanma and M. Pucinelli de Almeida scored 2 aces, the latter had a slight edge from his first serves by 4% with a 69% winning percentage, which helped him to raise his game starting the second set. However, Juanma's second serves appeared more reliable as he won 5% more of his second serve points, mainly due to M. Pucinelli de Almeida's 5 double faults that highlighted the vulnerability of his second serves.
In the semifinals, Juanma will face Juan Bautista Torres, who just defeated Facundo Mena 6-3, 7-6(4) in the quarterfinals. This could potentially be another classic at their best, depending on who appeared more offensive and balanced in general, as their aggression will be pitted against each other in this clash. While Juanma might have needed a while to recover from 2 separate 3-hour clashes, there is a possibility that this match could bring more confidence to steadily regain his form.

As thin as the margin got in this match, the third set setup depended on how they maintained their aggression as M. Pucinelli de Almeida slightly increased his intensity by the second set. Juanma initially broke early to 2-0 due to the Brazilian's backhand error to Juanma's forehand before he consolidated his lead to 3-0. Two games later, the latter came up with a backhand pass to set himself one point ahead before Juanma held his serves to 4-1, but the Argentinean first seed came up with a backhand pass to M. Pucinelli de Almeida's volley error to minimize the gap before having a backhand winner to secure his break point. However, the unseeded Brazilian saved the said break point and held his serves to 4-2.
Several games later, Juanma earned the chance to serve for the match. While M. Pucinelli de Almeida came up with an intuitive volley to win the third point of the ninth game, Juanma had his 3 initial match points fumbled, including two due to his +1 forehand and a backhand error trying to finish the rally. Another unforced error might have generated M. Pucinelli de Almeida's break point, but Juanma's defense-to-offense with a forehand finish successfully saved it before he came up with a match point. Ultimately, the shot went too wide for the unseeded Brazilian, resulting in Juanma emerging victorious by taking the third set 6-3 to secure his spot in the semifinals.

The second set was a different turntable once M. Pucinelli de Almeida's point constructions started kicking in, with a question on his range consistency being asked at the end of the set. Right in the third game, he started minimizing the gap through a rare working volley even if Juanma held his service game to 2-1. It took several more games before the said point construction started to take effect, where the Brazilian's backhand to Juanma's forehand error generated his break point before its conversion to 3-2.
Subsequently, M. Pucinelli de Almeida held his serves to 4-2, followed by a service game hold to 5-3 thanks to his successful drop shot. However, two games later, as he served for the second set, M. Pucinelli de Almeida should have done a second serve down a break point, but the lights went out. Despite it being foiled, Juanma generated his fourth break point through a working forehand winner before M. Pucinelli de Almeida volleyed his way to force another deuce. The former then had another set point, which was interrupted by the lights going out once again, but after the Brazilian sealed the second set 6-4 to bring this match to the deciding set, there was a brief blackout in between the end of the second set and the beginning of the third set.

The late afternoon session in the first Lima Challenger featured first seed Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who survived a 3-hour-17-minute match against Lautaro Midon 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(3) after going through a scenic route while he was a set and a break up before convincingly defeating Gonzalo Villanueva 6-4, 6-1 in the second round after the latter ran out of options mid-match, who faced Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida, who stunned sixth seed Alvaro Guillen Meza 6-3, 6-4 before knocking out Garrett Johns 6-0, 6-3, both in a straightforward manner. This match delivered all the goods, but the only one with better execution and balance of power stood out by the end of the match.
M. Pucinelli de Almeida kicked off the match by holding his serves to 1-0 before Juanma's forehand errors and a backhand winner from the Brazilian to generate his break point causing the former's early break to 2-0 only to be broken back to 2-1 thanks to the first seed's intuitive volley to create his break point. Afterward, Juanma leveled the play with the said break, but M. Pucinelli de Almeida survived 3 break points that were made thanks to Juanma's decent preceding backhand before having another massive hold to 3-2.
It took several more games before M. Pucinelli de Almeida turned out to control the flow because after Juanma's forehand error created the Brazilian's break points, he immediately converted it thanks to his successful drop shot to Juanma's volley error (5-3). This meant M. Pucinelli de Almeida should have served for the first set, but an instinctive volley from Juanma four points into the match created the Argentinean's first break point instead before breaking back to 5-4 in hopes to prolong the set. Subsequently, Juanma fired another drop shot to secure his game point before he held his serves to 5-5.
In the next few games, there were several notable point constructions between both players which helped them to hold their service games. For instance, M. Pucinelli de Almeida secured his service game hold to 6-5 thanks to his backhand pass from almost around the post, whereas Juanma came up with another incredible defense-to-offense moment concluded with his backhand finish for his game point before forcing the tie-break. During the tie-breaker, the unseeded Brazilian came up with a backhand down-the-line winner to secure his mini-break lead (2-1) only for a failed smash to fumble it before another volley error generated Juanma's mini-break before a forehand error allowed him to hold his serves (4-2). Several games later, Juanma's aggression continued as he created his set point on return through another remarkable forehand pass before his well-defended position bore fruit as he took the first set 7-6(3) due to M. Pucinelli de Almeida's backhand error to conclude the said rally.

Lima 1 Ch D R1: Nicolas Zanellato/Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida def. Roy Stepanov/Roberto Cid Subervi 7-6(5), 7-5 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
R. Stepanov/R. Cid Subervi might have been ahead by a break twice, once each in both sets, but they were not able to maintain their moment as N. Zanellato/M. Pucinelli de Almeida regained their point construction, placing their shot winners well to the open court while trying to bring the former off-balance with their point construction as they became more offensive, from either their net or their baseline games, the latter mostly through their forehands. This became evident toward the end of the match, as the latter pair generated 14 break points compared to the former's 7 (with a 2:1 ratio in their break point creation) despite only converting 4 of them.
On the other hand, there were several interesting notes on their service games. Even though N. Zanellato/M. Pucinelli de Almeida scored an ace, they fell short to R. Stepanov/R. Cid Subervi as they won 3% lesser second serve points than the latter (66% to 69%). However, the Brazilian pair stayed consistent on serve as they won 61% of their second serve points even if they double-faulted once, while R. Stepanov/R. Cid Subervi's follow-ups, which mostly stemmed from their point construction, made their second serves more vulnerable as it faded to 29% by the end of the match.
In the quarterfinals, N. Zanellato/M. Pucinelli de Almeida will face third seeds Seita Watanabe/Takeru Yuzuki, who defeated Tomas Farjat/Alvaro Guillen Meza 7-5, 6-2 in the first round. With the latter's form, this could be a tough yet intriguing match, which, at their best, could possibly be a classic depending on their point construction under pressure as close as this match. Another fun follow for the doubles sector awaits, especially since both could be dynamic in finding their balance!

The second set turned out to be an entirely different turntable, added with their point construction under pressure factoring for the standout team outside of their shot placements, making it an even wilder set, flow-wise. It all started from a working volley from R. Cid Subervi to poach the previous forehand from N. Zanellato/M. Pucinelli de Almeida, but the latter scored a massive hold to 1-0 before breaking to 2-0 thanks to their forehand winner on deciding point. However, the Brazilian pair got broken back as R. Cid Subervi's cross-court forehand winner secured his and R. Stepanov's break point before the break-back to 2-1, leveling the play to 2-2 right after.
Intriguingly, R. Stepanov/R. Cid Subervi benefited from N. Zanellato/M. Pucinelli de Almeida's erroneous service game as the latter got broken to 3-2 due to their double fault. Somehow, they bounced back thanks to their forehand volley to the open court while capitalizing on the former's preceding errors to break back 3-3. To add, they had a massive hold to 4-3 after they defended their position well, ending the rally with a close-call forehand down-the-line winner.
Five straight games later, N. Zanellato/M. Pucinelli de Almeida's return games managed to put more damage on R. Stepanov/R. Cid Subervi as they followed from the well-placed and timed shots. Starting by winning the third point through a forehand pass to set themselves one point ahead, the Brazilian pair topped it off through a forehand let cord moment to generate their match point. Ultimately, they broke for the match thanks to another forehand winner, taking the second set 7-5 to secure their spot in tomorrow's quarterfinals.

The penultimate action in the neighboring court featured a first-round doubles match, which involved Nicolas Zanellato/Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida and Roy Stepanov/Roberto Cid Subervi. Interestingly, this is the third time for N. Zanellato/M. Pucinelli de Almeida playing together, with the most recent one being the first-round loss to eventual champion Daniel Cukierman/Carlos Sanchez Jover in the Florianopolis Challenger. This match turned out to be competitive as both players tried to find their range, but only a successful shot placement under pressure that could help a pair to stand out in this match.
As a start, right in the third game, N. Zanellato/M. Pucinelli de Almeida smashed their way to generate their initial break point before R. Stepanov/R. Cid Subervi still saved them to hold 2-1. However, the net game mostly played a part as R. Stepanov fired a forehand return ace before a volley from R. Cid Subervi midway created and converted their break point to 3-2.
Subsequently, R. Stepanov/R. Cid Subervi consolidated their lead to 4-2. They earned their chance to serve for the first set at 5-3, but they faced several break points, which ended up to be converted due to R. Stepanov's backhand error in response to the Brazilian pair's preceding forehands (5-4), which also meant the former pair's set point was also squandered. N. Zanellato/M. Pucinelli de Almeida then leveled the play with a service game hold to 5-5, and the tie-breaker became inevitable two games later. Interestingly, the Brazilian pair took the second set 7-6(5) on their return, thanks to their well-placed forehand winner to R. Stepanov getting run over at the net, thus securing their position ahead in this match.

Florianopolis Ch D R1: Daniel Cukierman/Carlos Sanchez Jover def. Nicolas Zanellato/Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida 6-4, 7-5 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Cukierman/Sanchez Jover had a strong start to the match by pressing N. Zanellato/Pucinelli de Almeida's baseline game right as the match began, immediately testing their balance with a tidy point construction, including the volley side's involvements. However, the latter pair tried to keep things compact in the middle of the second set while trying to press some second serves, which accounted for their 33% break point conversion rate. Nonetheless, it was insufficient as Cukierman/Sanchez Jover cleaned up their act on return, successfully utilizing the net for their crucial break before serving for the match, which was a part of their 50% break point conversion rate (out of 8 chances) thanks to their point construction.
Furthermore, despite some dips in the second set, Cukierman/Sanchez Jover still had a more solid service game. Despite not scoring an ace compared to N. Zanellato/Pucinelli de Almeida's 3, the former still managed to win 11% more points from their first serves with a 71% winning percentage, even if the visible risks came further in the second set on how the Brazilian pair's returned. However, the latter turned out to risk their second serves further by double-faulting five times than Cukierman/Sanchez Jover's 1, fading their second serve percentage 14% below Cukierman/Sanchez Jover, making it even prone to attack as Cukierman/Sanchez Jover tried to appear more aggressive.
In the quarterfinals, Cukierman/Sanchez Jover will face the winner between Kaichi Uchida/Bogdan Bobrov and second seeds Scott Duncan/Kelsey Stevenson. Another possible chaos could unfold in this match, but both depth and court coverage, alongside their balance in general, will be tested in this match. Could be both a tough and exciting encounter, which should be fun to look forward to!

The second set became its own hot mess from the setup, which made it slightly more competitive than the first set as N. Zanellato/Pucinelli de Almeida successfully found their range, but it was insufficient for them to slightly prolong the match. This happened in spite of Cukierman/Sanchez Jover's convincing start, as the latter rallied to break early 1-0 thanks to Cukierman's preceding cross-court forehand to N. Zanellato's forehand error for their one-point lead before the former's swift forehand return secured the said break, consolidating their lead to 2-0 afterward. Somehow, they created another break point thanks to Cukierman's forehand winner, which was converted due to Pucinelli de Almeida's high forehand error (3-0) even if the Brazilian pair could come up with a 26-shot rally that was finished by Sanchez Jover's forehand error to minimize the gap early on.
However, Cukierman/Sanchez Jover started to struggle in maintaining their moment as the home pair started to get some groove. For example, N. Zanellato's swift forehand return to break occurred to break back (3-1) while taking advantage on Sanchez Jover's erroneous service game. They then held their serves to 4-2, and somehow broke again as a failed smash from Cukierman secured their break point before its conversion thanks to another forehand return ace from N. Zanellato that passed Cukierman at the net to break-back, allowing them to level the play at 4-4. Cukierman/Sanchez Jover almost had their chance to break for the match after a cross-court forehand winner, but N. Zanellato/Pucinelli de Almeida still held to 5-4.
Cukierman/Sanchez Jover's moment only came two games later, as their volley finish secured their 2-point lead before the break point came due to a double fault. Without any further ado, they became even more aggressive by firing another cross-court shots before Sanchez Jover's volley finish to break 6-5, thus earning them a chance to serve for the match. Ultimately, a working serve+1, which was finished by Cukierman's timely volley, secured them the second set 7-5, thus enabling them to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time as a pair.

An unlikely repairing lore between Daniel Cukierman, who was supposed to pair with Mariano Kestelboim but the latter withdrew, and Carlos Sanchez Jover, whom the former defeated in the first round of the Sao Leopoldo Challenger last week, emerged as they began their doubles journey this week in Florianopolis to close the night. They faced Nicolas Zanellato/Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida, where their balance (including their court coverage and shot-related matters) being tested in the crucial moments.
Already in the first game, Cukierman/Sanchez Jover pressed N. Zanellato/Pucinelli de Almeida's baseline game until the latter trailed 2 points behind somewhere before they recovered their serve in time to hold their serves to 1-0. It took another service hold before Sanchez Jover's timely volley resulted in his and Cukierman's two-point lead before they broke to 2-1 over Pucinelli de Almeida's failed volley response to the pass. Cukierman/Sanchez Jover then continued their solid start by holding their serves to 3-1.
Three consecutive games later, Cukierman/Sanchez Jover was tested from the baseline thanks to Pucinelli de Almeida's forehand pass to Cukierman's volley side to create their initial break point, but it was foiled over a working serve+1 to force the deciding point, which was won through a successful volley from Sanchez Jover for their massive hold (5-3). Eventually, Cukierman/Sanchez Jover earned their chance to serve for the match, where even though they conceded another point right on set point due to Sanchez Jover's cross-court forehand error, they still managed to take the first set 6-4 to set themselves ahead in this match.

[Late Post] Coquimbo Ch F: Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida def. Joao Lucas Reis da Silva [8] 7-6(1), 6-7(4), 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Everybody gave their all, but Pucinelli de Almeida stood out in some necessary departments, including shot selection. Reis might have had that power, but sometimes it could be unsustainable, which was the point of the third set (as hard as he tried).
Pucinelli de Almeida successfully utilized his first serves more as he won 73% of his points from there. Reis' second serves carried it for him instead with winning 13% more points from there than Pucinelli de Almeida, whose 3 double faults might not had it for him there. The 3 aces complemented Pucinelli de Almeida's service games well, somehow.
However, this match could be a culmination of two contrasting styles. Add the raw power with some variations like slices or working volleys, and that was the reason behind Pucinelli de Almeida standing out with 9 chances to break. Even if Reis tried to control the flow from the baseline, Pucinelli de Almeida's redirection surely helped converting 5 of those break points as well, trying to keep Reis' balance as off as possible while Reis tried to maintain his power there.
This marked Pucinelli de Almeids's maiden Challenger title, also first for this year. On the other hand, there were also a lot of positives gained during the match (especially for Reis, who previously had one Challenger final), including how to add and use more vsriety properly to make his game even more effective.
